DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Tuesday (May 1) "My
sheep hear my voice, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand"
Scripture: John 10:22-30
22 It was the feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter,
and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So
the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us
in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered
them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my
Father's name, they bear witness to me; 26 but you do not believe,
because you do not belong to my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I
know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they
shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand. 29 My
Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is
able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are
one."
Meditation: How secure is your faith and trust in God?
Scripture describes God’s word as a “lamp for our feet and a light
for our steps”(Psalm 119:105). The Jewish
Feast of the Dedication is also called the Festival of Lights
or Hanakkuh. This feast was held in late December, near the time
when Christians celebrate the feast of Christmas. This is the time of
year when the day is shortest and the night longest. Jesus used this
occasion to declare that he is the true light of the world (John
8:12). In his light we can see who God truly is and we can find the true
path to heaven.
Jesus speaks of the tremendous trust he has in God his Father and the
tremendous trust we ought to have in him because he is our good shepherd
(John 10:11). Sheep without a shepherd are defenseless against prey,
such as wolves, and often get lost and bewildered without a guide. That
is why shepherds literally live with their sheep out in the open field
and mountain sides. The shepherd guards his sheep from the dangers of
storms, floods, and beasts of prey. The shepherd leads his sheep to the
best places for feeding and the best streams for drinking. He finds the
best place for their rest and safety at night. The sheep recognize the
voice of their shepherd and heed his call when he leads them to safe
pasture and rest. We are like sheep – we become easy prey to forces
which can destroy us – sin, Satan, and a world opposed to God and his
people. Jesus not only frees us from Satan's snares and the grip of sin,
he leads us to the best of places where we can feed on the "word of
life" and drink from the "living waters" of his Holy Spirit. The sheep
who heed the voice of Jesus, the good shepherd, have no fear. He will
lead them to the best of places – everlasting peace, joy, and fellowship
with God and his people.
In this present life we will encounter trials and difficulties. We
can face them alone or we can follow Jesus, the true shepherd, who will
bring us safely through every difficulty to the place of peace and
security with God. Do you listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and
heed his commands?
"Lord Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd who secures what is best for
us. In you I place all my hope and trust. Open my ears to hear your
voice and follow your commands."
Psalm 87:1-7
1 On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
2 the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all
the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. [Selah]
4 Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; behold, Philistia
and Tyre, with Ethiopia -- "This one was born there," they say.
5 And of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in
her"; for the Most High himself will establish her.
6 The LORD records as he registers the peoples,
"This one was born there." [Selah]
7 Singers and dancers alike say, "All my springs are in you."

John Paul II: marking his beatification a year
on ...
To
mark a year since the beatification of John Paul
II on May 1st 2011, we bring you his words in
English focusing on prayer and priestly life, as
well as the testimony of some of those who
witnessed this first-hand.
Among them, the late Carmelite Father, Redemptus
Valabek, former postulator of the causes of the
saints of his Order, who explains why many used
to describe John Paul II as being a Carmelite at
heart.
Also, Nigerian Cardinal, Francis Arinze, head of
the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious
dialogue at the time of the remarkable prayer
gathering in Assisi. He points to how this Polish
Pontiff's call for all to pray was addressed not
just to Christians but to non-Christians as
well.
In this programme in which you can hear Blessed
John Paul II reciting the 'Our Father', we also
highlight how this Pope's 's prayer life was
inseparable from his priestly vocation. How he
often told his friends: "I am first and foremost
a priest", reminding them how privileged he was
to have this vocation because it allowed him to
preside at the Church's most important prayer of
all: the Celebration of the Eucharist .
Listen to this programme presented
and produced by Veronica Scarisbrick:

Archbishop Kaigama: Nigeria attacks defy all
reason

Twenty
one people are being mourned in Nigeria today
after they were killed by gunmen who attacked
Christian religious services on Sunday in the
north of the country. The co-ordinated assaults
happened at a university campus, during the
observance of a religious service, and a church.
“This horrific attack really defies all logic”,
said the Archbishop of Jos and President of the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria,
Ignatius Kaigama, reacting to Sunday’s killings.
He told Lydia O’Kane that people are “in a state
of shock” and are wondering when the violence
will stop.
Archbishop Kaigama also added his Archdiocese
has been touched by violence recently.
“My church was attacked, so many killed. A few
weeks ago we had the one month’s mind of the
death of 14 of our parishioners who died in that
attack.”
No group has claimed responsibility for this
latest violence, but the attacks bore
similarities to others carried by a radical
Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. Listen to
Lydia O'Kane's full interview with Archbishop
Kaigama

True Devotion to Mary
Chapter Three: The Perfect
Consecration to Jesus Christ
1. A complete consecration to Mary
120. As all perfection consists in our being conformed, united
and consecrated to Jesus it naturally follows that the most perfect of
all devotions is that which conforms, unites, and consecrates us most
completely to Jesus. Now of all God's creatures Mary is the most
conformed to Jesus. It therefore follows that, of all devotions,
devotion to her makes for the most effective consecration and conformity
to him. The more one is consecrated to Mary, the more one is consecrated
to Jesus. That is why perfect consecration to Jesus is but a perfect and
complete consecration of oneself to the Blessed Virgin, which is the
devotion I teach; or in other words, it is the perfect renewal of the
vows and promises of holy baptism.
121. This devotion consists in giving oneself entirely to Mary
in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her. It requires us to
give: (1) Our body with its senses and members; (2) Our soul with its
faculties; (3) Our present material possessions and all we shall acquire
in the future; (4) Our interior and spiritual possessions, that is, our
merits, virtues and good actions of the past, the present and the
future. In other words, we give her all that we possess both in our
natural life and in our spiritual life as well as everything we shall
acquire in the future in the order of nature, of grace, and of glory in
heaven. This we do without any reservation, not even of a penny, a hair,
or the smallest good deed. And we give for all eternity without claiming
or expecting, in return for our offering and our service, any other
reward than the honour of belonging to our Lord through Mary and in
Mary, even though our Mother were not - as in fact she always is - the
most generous and appreciative of all God's creatures.
122. Note here that two things must be considered regarding our
good works, namely, satisfaction and merit or, in other words, their
satisfactory or prayer value and their meritorious value. The
satisfactory or prayer value of a good work is the good action in so far
as it makes condign atonement for the punishment due to sin or obtains
some new grace. The meritorious value or merit is the good action in so
far as it merits grace and eternal glory. Now by this consecration of
ourselves to the Blessed Virgin we give her all satisfactory and prayer
value as well as the meritorious value of our good works, in other
words, all the satisfactions and the merits. We give her our merits,
graces and virtues, not that she might give them to others, for they
are, strictly speaking, not transferable, because Jesus alone, in making
himself our surety with his Father, had the power to impart his merits
to us. But we give them to her that she may keep, increase and embellish
them for us, as we shall explain later, and we give her our acts of
atonement that she may apply them where she pleases for God's greater
glory.
123. It follows then: (1) that by this devotion we give to Jesus
all we can possibly give him, and in the most perfect manner, that is,
through Mary's hands. Indeed we give him far more than we do by other
devotions which require us to give only part of our time, some of our
good works or acts of atonement and penances. In this devotion
everything is given and consecrated, even the right to dispose freely of
one's spiritual goods and the satisfactions earned by daily good works.
This is not done even in religious orders. Members of religious orders
give God their earthly goods by the vow of poverty, the goods of the
body by the vow of chastity, their free will by the vow of obedience,
and sometimes their freedom of movement by the vow of enclosure. But
they do not give him by these vows the liberty and right to dispose of
the value of their good works. They do not despoil themselves of what a
Christian considers most precious and most dear - his merits and
satisfactions.
124. (2) It follows then that anyone who in this way consecrates
and sacrifices himself voluntarily to Jesus through Mary may no longer
dispose of the value of any of his good actions. All his sufferings, all
his thoughts, words, and deeds belong to Mary. She can then dispose of
them in accordance with the will of her Son and for his greater glory.
This dependence, however, is without detriment to the duties of a
person's present and future state of life. One such duty, for example,
would be that of a priest who, by virtue of his office or otherwise,
must apply the satisfactory or prayer value of the Holy Mass to a
particular person. For this consecration can only be made in accordance
with the order established by God and in keeping with the duties of
one's state of life.
125. (3) It follows that we consecrate ourselves at one and the
same time to Mary and to Jesus. We give ourselves to Mary because Jesus
chose her as the perfect means to unite himself to us and unite us to
him. We give ourselves to Jesus because he is our last end. Since he is
our Redeemer and our God we are indebted to him for all that we are.

DIVINE MERCY

DIVINE MERCY
IN MY SOUL
(Saint
Faustina)
Notebook 1
Warsaw, August 1, 1925
Entrance into the
Convent
101- Jesus, You alone
know how the soul,
engulfed in darkness,
moans in the midst of
these torments and,
despite all this,
thirsts for God as
burning lips thirst for
water. It dies and
withers; it dies a death
without death; that is
to say, it cannot die.
All its efforts come to
nothing; it is under a
powerful hand. Now the
soul comes under the
power of the Just One.
All exterior temptations
cease; all that
surrounds it becomes
silent, like a dying
person who loses contact
with everything around
it: the person's entire
soul is in the hand of
the Just God, the
Thrice-Holy
God,-rejected for all
eternity! This is the
culminating moment, and
God alone can test a
soul in this way,
because He alone knows
what the soul can
endure.
When the soul has been
saturated through and
through by this infernal
fire, it is, as it were,
cast headlong into great
despair. My soul
experienced this moment
when I was all alone in
my cell. When my soul
began to sink into this
despair, I felt that the
end was near. But I
seized my little
crucifix and clutched it
tightly in my hand. And
now I felt my body
separate itself from my
soul; and though I
wanted to go to my
Superiors, I no longer
had the physical
strength. I uttered my
last words: "I trust in
Your Mercy!"-and it
seemed to me that I
provoked God to an even
greater anger. And now I
was drowned in despair,
and all that was left me
was a moan of
unadulterated pain
which, from time to
time, tore itself from
my soul. The soul is in
agony-and it seemed to
me that I would remain
in this state, because
by my own strength I
could not emerge from
it. Every recollection
of God opened up an
unspeakable ocean of
suffering, and yet
despite this there is
something within the
soul which is drawn to
Him, though it seems to
her for this only-that
she suffer more. The
memory of the love with
which God formerly
surrounded it is still
another kind of
suffering. His gaze
pierces it, and
everything within the
soul is burned by this
gaze.
102- After some time,
one of the sisters came
into the cell and found
me almost dead. She was
frightened and went to
find the Directress of
Novices who, in the name
of holy obedience
ordered me to get up
from the ground. My
strength returned
immediately, and I got
up, trembling. The
Directress recognized
immediately the state of
my soul and spoke to me
about the inscrutable
mercy of God, saying,
"Do not be distressed
about anything, Sister.
I command this of you in
virtue of obedience."
Then she said to me, "I
see now, Sister, that
God is calling you to a
high degree of holiness;
the Lord wants to draw
you very close to
Himself since He has
allowed these things to
happen to you so soon.
Be faithful to God,
Sister, because this is
a sign that He wants you
to have a high place in
heaven." However, I did
not understand anything
of these words. When I
went into the chapel, I
felt as though my soul
had been set free from
everything, as though I
had just come forth from
the hand of God. I
perceived the
inviolability of my
soul; I felt that I was
a tiny child.
103- Suddenly I saw the
Lord interiorly, and He
said to me, Fear not,
My daughter; I am with
you. In that single
moment, all the darkness
and torments vanished,
my senses were inundated
with unspeakable joy,
[and] the faculties of
my soul filled with
light.
104- I want to add that,
although my soul was
already in the rays of
His love, traces of my
past tortures remained
on my body for two days:
a deathly pale face and
bloodshot eyes. Jesus
alone knows what I
suffered. What I have
written is very poor
compared to the reality.
I cannot put it in
words; it seemed to me
that I had come back
from the other world. I
feel an aversion for
everything that is
created; I snuggle to
the heart of God like a
baby to its mother's
breast. I see everything
differently now. I am
conscious of what the
Lord, by one single
word, has done in my
soul, and I live by it.
I shudder at the
recollection of this
past torture. I would
not have believed that
one could suffer so, if
I had not gone through
it myself. This is a
completely spiritual
suffering.
105- However, in all
these sufferings and
struggles, I was not
omitting Holy Communion.
When it seemed to me
that I should not
communicate, I went,
before Holy Communion,
to the Directress and
told her that I could
not approach the
Sacrament, because it
seemed to me that I
should not do so. But
she would not permit me
to omit Holy Communion,
so I went, and I
understand now that it
was only obedience that
saved me.
The Directress herself
told me later that my
trials had passed
quickly, "and this
solely because you were
obedient, Sister; and it
was through the power of
obedience that you
struggled through this
so bravely." It is true
that it was the Lord
himself who brought me
out of this torment, but
my fidelity to obedience
did please Him.
106- Though these are
frightening things, the
soul should not be too
fearful, because God
will never test us
beyond what we are able
to bear. On the other
hand, He may never send
us such sufferings, but
I write this because, if
it pleases the Lord to
let a soul pass through
such sufferings, it
should not be afraid
but, insofar as this
depends on the soul
itself, it should remain
faithful to God. God
will do a soul no harm,
because He is Love
itself, and in this
unfathomable love has
called it into being.
However, when I was so
tormented, I myself did
not understand this.
107- O my God, I have
come to know that I am
not of this earth; You,
O Lord, have poured this
profound awareness into
my soul. My communion is
more with heaven than
with earth, though I in
no way neglect my
duties.
108- During those times,
I had no spiritual
director; I was without
any kind of guidance
whatever. I begged the
Lord, but He did not
give me a director.
Jesus himself has been
my Master from the days
of my infancy up to the
present moment. He
accompanied me across
all the deserts and
through all dangers. I
see clearly that God
alone could have led me
through such great
perils unharmed, with my
soul untarnished and
passing victoriously
through all
difficulties, immense
though they were. Going
out[ ...] Later on, the
Lord did give me a
director.
109- After such
sufferings the soul
finds itself in a state
of great purity of
spirit and very close to
God. But I should add
that during these
spiritual torments it is
close to God, but it is
blind. The soul's vision
is plunged into
darkness, and though God
is nearer than ever to
the soul which is
suffering, the whole
secret consists in the
fact that it knows
nothing of this. The
soul in fact declares
that, not only has God
abandoned it, but it is
the object of His
hatred. With how great a
malady are they eyes of
the soul afflicted! When
struck by divine light,
the soul affirms that
this light does not
exist, although it is
precisely because this
divine light is so
bright that it is
blinded. Yet despite
all, I learned later
that God is closer to a
soul at such moments
than at others, because
it would not be able to
endure these trials with
the help of ordinary
grace alone. God's
omnipotence and an
extraordinary grace must
be active here, for
otherwise the soul would
succumb at the first
blow.
110- O Divine Master,
what happens in my soul
is Your work alone! You,
O Lord, are not afraid
to place the soul on the
edge of a terrible
precipice where it
stands, alarmed and
filled with fright, and
then You call it back
again to Yourself. These
are Your imponderable
mysteries. |

CATHOLIC TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY |
|
The
Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
CHAPTER TWO
I Believe in Jesus Christ,
the Only Son of God
“Jesus Christ suffered under Pontius Pilate
was crucified, died, and was buried.”
112. What is the
importance of the Paschal Mystery of Jesus?
571-573
The Paschal Mystery of
Jesus, which comprises his passion, death, resurrection, and
glorification, stands at the center of the Christian faith because God's
saving plan was accomplished once for all by the redemptive death of his
Son Jesus Christ.
113. What were the
accusations by which Jesus was condemned to death?
574-576
Some of the leaders of
Israel accused Jesus of acting against the law, the temple in Jerusalem,
and in particular against faith in the one God because he proclaimed
himself to be the Son of God. For this reason they handed him over to
Pilate so that he might condemn him to death.
114. How did Jesus
conduct himself in regard to the Law of Israel?
577-582
592
Jesus did not abolish
the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai but he fulfilled it by
giving it its definitive interpretation. He himself was the divine
Legislator who fully carried out this Law. Furthermore, as the faithful
Servant, he offered by means of his expiatory death the only sacrifice
capable of making atonement for all the “transgressions committed by men
under the first Covenant” (Hebrews 9:15).
115. What was the
attitude of Jesus toward the temple in Jerusalem?
583-586
593
Jesus was accused of
hostility to the temple. On the contrary, he venerated it as “the house
of his Father” (John 2:16); and it was there that he imparted an
important part of his teaching. However, he also foretold its
destruction in connection with his own death and he presented himself as
the definitive dwelling place of God among men.
116. Did Jesus
contradict Israel's faith in the one God and savior?
587-591
594
Jesus never contradicted
faith in the one God, not even when he performed the stupendous divine
work which fulfilled the messianic promises and revealed himself as
equal to God, namely the pardoning of sins. However, the call of Jesus
to believe in him and to be converted makes it possible to understand
the tragic misunderstanding of the Sanhedrin which judged Jesus to be
worthy of death as a blasphemer.
117. Who is
responsible for the death of Jesus?
595-598
The passion and death of
Jesus cannot be imputed indiscriminately either to all the Jews that
were living at that time or to their descendants. Every single sinner,
that is, every human being is really the cause and the instrument of the
sufferings of the Redeemer; and the greater blame in this respect falls
on those above all who are Christians and who the more often fall into
sin or delight in their vices.
118. Why was the
death of Jesus part of God's plan?
599-605
619
To reconcile to himself
all who were destined to die because of sin God took the loving
initiative of sending his Son that he might give himself up for sinners.
Proclaimed in the Old Testament, especially as the sacrifice of the
Suffering Servant, the death of Jesus came about “in accordance with the
Scriptures”.
119. In what way did
Christ offer himself to the Father?
606-609
620
The entire life of
Christ was a free offering to the Father to carry out his plan of
salvation. He gave “his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45)
and in this way he reconciled all of humanity with God. His suffering
and death showed how his humanity was the free and perfect instrument of
that divine love which desires the salvation of all people.
120. How is Jesus’
offering expressed at the Last Supper?
610-611
621
At the Last Supper with
his apostles on the eve of his passion Jesus anticipated, that is, both
symbolized his free self-offering and made it really present: “This is
my Body which is given for you” (Luke 22:19), “This is my
Blood which is poured out...” (Matthew 26:28) Thus he both
instituted the Eucharist as the “memorial” (1 Corinthians 11:25)
of his sacrifice and instituted his apostles as priests of the new
covenant.
