DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |

Friday (12/18): "He will
save his people from their sins"
Scripture: Matthew 1:18-24
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his
mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she
was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband
Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to
divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of
the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do
not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is
of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name
Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took
place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 "Behold, a
virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called
Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he
did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife
Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-8
5 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up
for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal
wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In
his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this
is the name by which he will be called: `The LORD is our
righteousness.' 7 "Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says the
LORD, when men shall no longer say, `As the LORD lives who brought up
the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,' 8 but `As the LORD lives
who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel out of the
north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.'
Then they shall dwell in their own land."
Meditation: Do you hold on to the promises of God at all
times, especially when you are faced with uncertainty or adversity? The
prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah spoke words of hope in a hopeless situation
for Israel. The Davidic dynasty was corrupt and unfit for a Messianic
King. Apostates like King Ahaz (2 Kings 16) and weaklings like Zedekiah
(Jeremiah 38) occupied the throne of David. How could God be faithful to
his promise to raise up a righteous King who would rule forever over the
house of David? The prophets trusted that God could somehow “raise up a
righteous shoot” from the stump of Jesse (Isaiah 2:11). Like the
prophets we are called “in hope to believe against hope” (Romans 4:18)
that God can and will fulfill all his promises.
Mary had to face an enormous challenge to her faith and trust in God
and to the faith of her family and Joseph, the man she chose to marry.
She was asked to assume a burden of tremendous responsibility. It had
never been heard of before that a child could be born without a natural
father. Mary was asked to accept this miraculous exception to the laws
of nature. That required faith and trust in God and in his promises.
Second, Mary was not yet married. Pregnancy outside of wedlock was not
tolerated in those days. Mary was only espoused to Joseph, and such an
engagement had to last for a whole year. She was asked to assume a great
risk. She could have been rejected by Joseph, by her family, by all her
own people. Mary knew that Joseph and her family would not understand
without revelation from God. She nonetheless believed and trusted in
God's promises.
Joseph, a just and God-fearing man, did not wish to embarrass or
punish his espoused wife, Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant.
To all appearances she had broken their solemn pledge to be faithful and
chaste to one another. Joseph, no doubt took this troubling matter to
God in prayer. He was not hasty to judge or to react with hurt and
anger. God rewarded him not only with guidance and consolation, but with
the divine assurance that he had indeed called Joseph to be the husband
of Mary and to assume a mission that would require the utmost faith,
confidence, and trust in Almighty God. Joseph believed in the divine
message to take Mary as his wife and to accept the child in her womb as
the promised Messiah. Like Mary, Joseph is a model of faith for us. He
is a faithful witness and servant of God's unfolding plan of redemption.
Are you ready to believe in the promises of God, even when faced with
perplexing circumstances and what seems like insurmountable problems?
God has not left us alone, but has brought us his only begotten Son, our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let us celebrate Christmas, the feast of
the Incarnation, with joyful hearts and let us renew our faith and hope
in God and in his redeeming work.
"Lord Jesus, you came to save us from sin and the power of death. May
I always rejoice in your salvation and trust in your plan for my life".
Psalm 72:1,12-13,18-19
1 Give the king thy justice, O God, and thy righteousness to the
royal son!
12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no
helper.
13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the
needy.
18 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous
things.
19 Blessed be his glorious name for ever; may his glory fill the whole
earth! Amen and Amen!

Vatican Statement on Emmanuel Milingo
Holy See Has Imposed Penalty of Dismissal From the Clerical State
VATICAN CITY, DEC. 17, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Here is the statement released today by the Vatican press office concerning the former archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia, Emmanuel Milingo, and the Holy See's move to dismiss him from the clerical state. * * *
For a number of years the Church has followed with great concern the difficulties caused by the regrettable conduct of Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo. Many attempts have been made to bring Archbishop Milingo back into communion with the Catholic Church, including the consideration of suitable ways to enable him to exercise the episcopal ministry. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI were directly involved in those efforts and both Popes personally followed the case of Archbishop Milingo in a spirit of paternal solicitude.
In the course of this unhappy series of events, Archbishop Milingo became irregular in 2001 as a result of his attempt to marry Mrs. Maria Sung, and incurred the medicinal penalty of suspension (cf. Canons 1044 § 1, n. 3; 1394 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law). Thereafter, he headed certain groups calling for the abolition of clerical celibacy and gave numerous interviews to the media in open disobedience to the repeated interventions of the Holy See, creating serious upset and scandal among the faithful. Then, on 24 September 2006 in Washington, Archbishop Milingo ordained four Bishops without pontifical mandate.
By so doing, he incurred the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae (Canon 1382) which was declared by the Holy See on 26 September 2006 and is still in force today. Sadly, Archbishop Milingo has shown no sign of the desired repentance with a view to returning to full communion with the Supreme Pontiff and the other members of the College of Bishops. Rather, he has persisted in the unlawful exercise of acts belonging to the episcopal office, committing new crimes against the unity of Holy Church. Specifically, in recent months Archbishop Milingo has proceeded to several other episcopal ordinations.
The commission of these grave crimes, which has recently been established, is to be considered as proof of the persistent contumacy of Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo. The Holy See has therefore been obliged to impose upon him the further penalty of dismissal from the clerical state.
According to Canon 292 of the Code of Canon Law, the penalty of dismissal from the clerical state, now added to the grave penalty of excommunication, has the following effects: loss of the rights and duties attached to the clerical state, except for the obligation of celibacy; prohibition of the exercise of any ministry, except as provided for by Canon 976 of the Code of Canon Law in those cases involving danger of death; loss of all offices and functions and of all delegated power, as well as prohibition of the use of clerical attire. Consequently, the participation of the faithful in any future celebrations organized by Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo is to be considered unlawful.
It must be pointed out that the dismissal of a Bishop from the clerical state is most extraordinary. The Holy See has felt obliged to act in this way due to the serious consequences for ecclesial communion resulting from repeated episcopal consecrations carried out without pontifical mandate; nevertheless, the Church hopes that Archbishop Milingo will see the error of his ways.
As for those recently ordained by Archbishop Milingo, the Church’s discipline in imposing the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae upon those who receive episcopal consecration without pontifical mandate is well-known. While expressing hope for their conversion, the Church reaffirms what was declared on 26 September 2006, namely that she does not recognize these ordinations, nor does she intend to recognize them, or any subsequent ordinations based on them, in the future. Hence the canonical status of the supposed bishops remains as it was prior to the ordination conferred by Archbishop Milingo.
At this moment, as the Church experiences profound sorrow for the grave acts perpetrated by Archbishop Milingo, she entrusts to the power of prayer the repentance of the guilty party and of all those who -- be they priests or lay faithful -- have in any way cooperated with him by acting against the unity of Christ’s Church.

LIFE

VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD
CHAPTER XIX.
PILATE; SENDS THE JEWS WITH JESUS AND THEIR AC
CUSATIONS TO HEROD, WHERE THEY ADVANCE THEIR
CHARGES; HEROD TREATS JESUS WITH CONTEMPT AND
SENDS HIM BACK TO PILATE; MARY FOLLOWS THE
SAVIOR; OTHER HAPPENINGS IN CONNECTION.
612. The custom of giving freedom to an imprisoned
criminal at this great solemnity of the Pasch was intro
duced by the Jews in grateful remembrance of the re
lease of their forefathers from servitude by their passage
through the Red Sea, when the Almighty freed them
from the power of Pharao by killing the first-born chil
dren of the Egyptians and afterwards annihilating him
and his armies in the waters of the Red sea (Exodus
12, 29). In gratitude for this favor the Jews always
sought out the greatest malefactor and pardoned him
his crimes ; while they refused such clemency to those who
were less guilty. In their treaties with the Romans they
expressly reserved this privilege ; and the governors com
plied with it. But in the present instance they failed to
follow out in their demands what they were so loudly
proclaiming in regard to Jesus. According to law they
were to demand the release of the greatest criminal and
this they proclaimed Jesus to be; yet they persisted in
demanding the punishment of Christ and the release of
Barabbas, whom they judged less guilty. In such blind
ness and perversity had the wrath and envy of the demon
cast them, that they lost the light of reason even in their
own affairs and against their own selves.
613.
While Pilate was thus disputing with the Jews
in the pretorium, his wife, Procula, happened to hear of
his doings and she sent him a message telling him :;What
hast thou to do with this Man? Let him go free; for I
warn thee that I have had this very day some visions in
regard to Him!; This warning of Procula originated
through the activity of Lucifer and his demons. For
they, observing all that was happening in regard to the
person of Christ and the unchangeable patience with which
He bore all injuries, were more and more confused and
staggered in their rabid fury. Although the swollen
pride of Lucifer could not explain how his Divinity could
ever subject Itself to such great insults, nor how He
could permit his body to suffer such ill-treatment, and
although he could not come to any certain conviction,
whether this Jesus was a Godman or not ; yet the dragon
was persuaded, that some great mystery was here tran
spiring among men which would be the cause of great
damage and defeat to him and his malice if he did not
succeed in arresting its progress in the world. Having
come to this conclusion with his demons, he many times
suggested to the pharisees the propriety of ceasing their
persecutions of Christ. These suggestions, however, since
they originated from malice and were void of any power
for good, failed to move the obstinate and perverted
hearts of the Jews. Despairing of success the demons
betook themselves to the wife of Pilate and spoke to
her in dreams, representing to her that this Man was
just and without guilt, that if her husband should sen
tence Him he would be deprived of his rank and she her
self would meet with great adversity. They urged her
to advise Pilate to release Jesus and punish Barabbas, if
she did not wish to draw misfortune upon their house
and their persons.
614.
Procula was filled with great fear and terror at
these visions, and as soon as she heard what was passing
between the Jews and her husband, she sent him the
message mentioned by saint Matthew, not to meddle
with this Man nor condemn One to death, whom she held
to be just. The demon also injected similar misgivings
into the mind of Pilate and these warnings of his wife
only increased them. Yet, as all his considerations rested
upon worldly policy, and as he had not co-operated with
the true helps given him by the Savior, all these fears
retarded his unjust proceedings only so long as no other
more powerful consideration arose, as will be seen in
effect. But just now he began for the third time to
argue (as saint Luke tells us), insisting upon the inno
cence of Christ our Lord and that he found no crime in
Him nor any guilt worthy of death, and therefore he
would punish and then dismiss Him (Luke 23, 22). As
we shall see in the next chapter, he did really punish
Christ in order to see whether the Jews would be satisfied.
But the Jews, on the contrary, demanded that Christ be
crucified. Thereupon Pilate asked for water and released
Barabbas. Then he washed his hands in the presence of
all the people, saying:;I have no share in the death of
this just Man, whom you condemn. Look to yourselves
in what you are doing, for I wash my hands in order
that you may understand they are not sullied in the blood
of the Innocent.; Pilate thought that by this ceremony
he could excuse himself entirely and that he thereby could
put its blame upon the princes of the Jews and upon the
people who demanded it. The wrath of the Jews was so
blind and foolish that for the satisfaction of seeing Jesus
crucified, they entered upon this agreement with Pilate
and took upon themselves and upon their children the
responsibility for this crime. Loudly proclaiming this
terrible sentence and curse, they exclaimed : His blood
come upon us and upon our children; (Matth. 27, 25).

DIVINE MERCY
|
| |
| In spite of the noise [the gardeners] were
making, I heard these words in my soul: "Pray for
me!" But as I could not understand these words very
well, I moved a few steps away from the wards,
trying to think who it could be who was asking me to
pray. Then I heard the words: "I am Sister..." This
sister was in Warsaw while I was, at the time, in
Vilnius. "Pray for me until I tell you to stop. I am
dying." Immediately, I began to pray fervently for
her [addressing myself] to the expiring Heart of
Jesus. She gave me no respite , and I kept praying
from three until five. At five I heard the words,
"Thank you!" and I understood that she had died.
.....In the afternoon [the following day] a postcard
came saying that Sister... had died at such and such
a time. I understood that it was at the same hour
when she had said to me, "Pray for me." (315)
|
| |
|
In a private room next to
mine there was a Jewish woman who was seriously ill.
I went to see her three days ago and she was deeply
pained at the thought that she would soon die
without having her soul cleansed by the grace of
Baptism. ...I felt inspired to pray before the image
which Jesus had instructed me to have painted. I
said, "Lord, You Yourself told me that You would
grant many graces through this image. I ask You then
for the grace of Holy Baptism for this Jewish lady.
."...
..The moment came when the
sick woman began to lose consciousness, and as a
result, in order to save her, they...went off...to
find help. And so the patient was left alone, and
Sister baptised her, and before they had all rushed
back, her soul was beautiful, adorned with God's
grace. Her final agony began immediately, but it did
not last long. It was as if fell asleep. All of a
sudden, I saw her soul ascending to heaven in
wondrous beauty. Oh how beautiful is a soul with
sanctifying grace! Joy flooded my heart that before
this image I had received so great grace for this
soul. (916) |
| |
| January 28, 1938. Today the
Lord said to me,
My daughter, write down these words: All
those souls who will glorify My mercy and spread its
worship, encouraging others to trust in My mercy,
will not experience terror at the hour of death. My
mercy will shield them in that final battle...(1540) |
| |
| Write
that when they say this chaplet in the presence of
the dying, I will stand between My Father and the
dying person, not as the just Judge but as the
merciful Saviour. (1541) |
| |
| When I entered the chapel for a moment,
the Lord said to me,
My daughter, help Me to save a certain dying
sinner. Say the chaplet that I have taught you for
him. When I began to say the
chaplet, I saw the man dying in the midst of
terrible torment and struggle. His Guardian Angel
was defending him, but he was, as it were, powerless
against the enormity of the soul's misery. A
multitude of devils was waiting for the soul. But
while I was saying the chaplet, I saw Jesus just as
He is depicted in the image. The rays which issued
from Jesus' Heart enveloped the sick man, and the
powers of darkness fled in panic. The sick man
peacefully breathed his last. When I came to myself,
I understood how very important the chaplet was for
the dying. It appeases the anger of God. (1565) |
| |
| I often communicate with persons who are
dying and obtain the divine mercy for them. Oh, how
great is the goodness of God, greater than we can
understand. There are moments and there are
mysteries of the divine mercy over which the heavens
are astounded. Let our judgment of souls cease, for
God's mercy upon them is extraordinary. (1684) |
| |
| I often attend upon the dying and
through entreaties obtain for them trust in God's
mercy, and I implore God for an abundance of divine
grace , which is always victorious. God's mercy
sometimes touches the sinner at the last moment in a
wondrous and mysterious way. Outwardly, it seems as
if everything were lost, but it is not so. The soul,
illumined by a ray of God's powerful final grace,
turns to God in the last moment with such a power of
love that, in an instant, it receives from God
forgiveness of sin and punishment , while outwardly
it shows no sign either of repentance or of
contrition, because souls [at that stage] no longer
react to external things. Oh, how beyond
comprehension is God's mercy! But- horror -there are
also souls who voluntarily and consciously reject
and scorn this grace! Although a soul is at the
point of death, the merciful God gives the soul that
interior vivid moment, so that if the soul is
willing, it has the possibility of returning to God.
But sometimes, the obduracy in souls is so great
that consciously they choose hell; they make useless
all the prayers that other souls offer to God for
them and even the efforts of God Himself..(1698) |
| |
| Pray as much as
you can for the dying. By your entreaties, obtain
for them trust in My mercy, because they have most
need of trust, and have it the least. Be assured
that the grace of eternal salvation for certain
souls in their final moment depends on your prayer.
You know the whole abyss of My mercy, so draw upon
it for yourself and especially for poor sinners.
Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness
than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul.
(1777) |
| |
| Today, the Lord came to me and said,
"My daughter,
help Me to save souls. You will go to a dying
sinner, and you will continue to recite the chaplet,
and in this way you will obtain for him trust in My
mercy, for he is already in despair."
Suddenly, I found myself in a strange
cottage where an elderly man was dying amidst great
torments. All about the bed was a multitude of
demons and the family, who were crying. When I began
to pray, the spirits of darkness fled, with hissing
and threats directed at me. The soul became calm
and, filled with trust, rested in the Lord. At the
same moment, I found myself again in my own room.
How this happens...I do not know. (1798) |

Explanation of the Ten Rules of Life
|
|
5. I will only one wisdom: the science of the Cross
When I look back on my past, it's hard to understand the
meandering of the path I traveled. I walked on the nettles and
rocks, I sang with joy as I moved ahead, groping my way in the
darkness. Yet Jesus was there, walking with me, guiding me,
carrying me when I could no longer move, when I was inches from
death. It was at those moments that I would turn my thoughts to
Jesus crucified and abandoned. He could no longer teach or cure
the sick or raise his friend from the dead. he was in absolute
immobility. In the eyes of the world he had lost, he was useless
and frustrated. But in God's eyes, Jesus, on the Cross, had
accomplished the greatest act of all; he had shed his blood to
save humanity.
I was liberated by the thought of Jesus crucified. When I was
crushed by pain, disdain, unjust accusations, ingratitude and in
comprehension, I prayed to unite myself to Jesus on the Cross
and I knew that this was the most important act of my life. I
often sang "O crux ave, spes unica mundi salus et gloria!".
Jesus, save the World!
You have one wisdom: the science of the Cross. (1 Cor 2:2). Look
to the Cross and there you will find the solution to all the
problems which are worrying you. If the Cross is the standard by
which you make all your choices and decisions, your soul will be
at peace.
What is foolishness in the eyes of men is wisdom in the eyes of
God. (1 Cor 3:19 and 1 Cor 1:27).
The Church was born on the Cross. The Church grows by continuing
the passion of Jesus until the end of time. If you put your
trust in money, in diplomacy, in power and in influence, or in
campaigns of any kind, you will be very sadly misled.
