DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Friday (6/12): "If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out
and throw it away"
Scripture: Matthew 5:27-32
27 "You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has
already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye
causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you
lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it
away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your
whole body go into hell. 31 "It was also said, `Whoever divorces his
wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that
every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity,
makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits
adultery.
Meditation: What does Jesus mean when he says “pluck out your
eye “ or “cut off your hand and throw it away” if it leads you to sin?
Is he exaggerating here? Jesus used forceful language to urge his
disciples to choose for life – an enduring life of joy and happiness
with God – rather than for death – an unending death and total
separation from a community of love, peace, joy and friendship with God.
Jesus set before his disciples the one goal in life that is worth any
sacrifice and that goal is the conformity of our will with God and what
he desires for our well-being and happiness with him. Just as a doctor
might remove some part of the body, such as a diseased limb, in order to
preserve the life of the whole body, so we must be ready to part with
anything that causes us to sin and which inevitably leads to spiritual
death.
Jesus warns us of the terrible responsibility that we must set no
stumbling block in the way of another, that is, not give offense or bad
example that might lead another to sin. The young in faith are
especially vulnerable to the bad example of those who should be passing
on the faith. Jesus teaches that righteousness involves responding to
every situation in life in a way that fulfill's God's law, not just
externally but internally as well. Jesus says that evil desires spring
from the heart. That is why the sin of adultery must first be dealt with
in the heart, the place not only of the emotions, but the mind, will,
thought, and intentions as well. God’s intention and ideal from the
beginning was for man and woman to be indissolubly united in marriage as
“one flesh” (see Genesis 2:23-24). That ideal is found in the
unbreakable union of Adam and Eve. They were created for each other and
for no one else. They are the pattern and symbol for all who were to
come. Moses permitted divorce as a concession in view of a lost ideal
(see Mark 10:2-9). Jesus sets the high ideal of the married state before
those who are willing to accept his commands. Jesus gives the grace and
power of his Holy Spirit to those who seek to follow his way of holiness
in their state of life– whether married or single. If we want to live
righteously as God desires for us, then we must know and understand the
intention of God's commands for us, and decide in our heart to obey the
Lord. Through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit, the Lord writes
his law on our hearts and gives us his power to live his way of
righteousness and holiness. Do you trust in God’s love and allow his
Holy Spirit to fill you with a thirst for holiness and righteousness in
every area of your life?
"Lord Jesus, begin a new work of love within me. Instill in me a
greater love and respect for your commandments. Give me a burning desire
to live a life of holiness and righteousness. Purify my thoughts,
desires, and intentions that I may only desire what is pleasing to you
and in accord with your will."
Psalm 27:7-9,13-14
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!
8 Thou hast said, "Seek ye my face." My heart says to thee, "Thy face,
LORD, do I seek."
9 Hide not thy face from me. Turn not thy servant away in anger, thou
who hast been my help. Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my
salvation!
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of
the living!
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yea,
wait for the LORD!
Saturday (6/13): “Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'”
Scripture: Matthew 5:33-37
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, `You
shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have
sworn.' 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for
it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or
by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear
by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what
you say be simply `Yes' or `No'; anything more than this comes from
evil.
Meditation: How forceful are honest words! (Job 6:25)
Jesus addressed the issue of honesty and truthfulness in one’s conduct
and speech. What does it mean to be true to one’s word? To be true to
oneself and to others requires character. Unfortunately many people
today miserably fail here. No wonder we don’t trust many in positions of
leadership and influence. God is the source of all truth and there is
nothing false or deceitful in him. His word is truth and his law is
truth. His truth liberates us from illusion, deceit, and hypocrisy.
Jesus told his disciples that the truth will make you free (John
8:32).
Why is it so hard to be true and to speak the truth? Truth demands
commitment – that we live our lives according to it and be faithful
witnesses of the truth. Jesus teaches his disciples the unconditional
love of truth. He speaks against bearing false witness and all forms of
untruthfulness and swearing unnecessary oaths to God. A disciple's word
should be capable of being trusted without verbal rituals to give it
validity. Christ’s disciple must speak truthfully without “stretching”
the truth by adding to it or by compromising the truth by speaking
untruth or by leaving out what is necessary to convey what is truthful.
Thomas Aquinas said: People could not live with one another if there
were not mutual confidence that they were being truthful to one another.
...(In justice) as a matter of honor, one person owes it to another to
manifest the truth. Are you true – to God, to yourself, and to
others? And do you allow God’s word of truth to penetrate your mind and
heart and to form your conscience?
"Set a watch, Lord, upon my tongue, that I may never speak the cruel
word which is not true; or being true, is not the whole truth; or being
wholly true, is merciless; for the love of Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-10
1 Preserve me, O God, for in thee I take refuge.
2 I say to the LORD, "Thou art my Lord; I have no good apart from thee."
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; thou holdest my lot.
7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart
instructs me.
8 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I
shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also dwells
secure.
10 For thou dost not give me up to Sheol, or let thy godly one see the
Pit.
Sunday (6/14): "This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many"
Scripture: Mark 14:12-16,22-26 [Feast of the Body and Blood
of Christ] (alternate reading:
Mark 4:26-34)
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the
passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where will you have us go and
prepare for you to eat the passover?" 13 And he sent two of his
disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar
of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to
the householder, `The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am
to eat the passover with my disciples?' 15 And he will show you a large
upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us." 16 And the
disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told
them; and they prepared the passover. 22 And as they were eating, he
took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said,
"Take; this is my body." 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given
thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to
them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
25 Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine
until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." 26 And when
they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Meditation: Why did Jesus offer himself as "food and drink"?
Jesus chose the time of Passover to fulfill what he had announced at
Capernaum– giving his disciples his body and his blood (John 6:51-58).
Jesus’ passing over to his Father by his death and resurrection, the new
Passover, is anticipated in the Last Supper and celebrated in the
Eucharist or Lord's Supper, which fulfills the Jewish Passover and
anticipates the final Passover of the church in the glory of God’s
kingdom. This is the most significant meal of Jesus and the most
important occasion of his breaking of bread. In this meal Jesus
identifies the bread as his body and the cup as his blood. When the Lord
Jesus commands his disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood, he
invites us to take his life into the very center of our being (John
6:53). That life which he offers is the very life of God himself. Jesus'
death on the cross, his gift of his body and blood in the Supper, and
his promise to dine again with his disciples when the kingdom of God
comes in all its fulness are inseparably linked. Jesus instructed his
disciples to "do this in remembrance of me". These words establish every
Lord's Supper or Eucharist as a "remembrance" of Jesus' atoning death,
his resurrection, and his promise to return again. "For as often as you
eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he
comes" (1 Corinthians 11:26). Our celebration of the Lord's Supper
anticipates the final day when the Lord Jesus will feast anew with his
disciples in the heavenly marriage feast of the Lamb and his Bride. Do
you know the joy of the drinking Christ's cup and tasting the bread of
his Table in sincerity?
Mark ties the last supper meal with Jesus' death and the coming of
God's kingdom. Jesus transforms the passover of the old covenant into
the meal of the "new covenant in my blood". In the Old Covenant bread
and wine were offered in sacrifice as a sign of grateful acknowledgment
to their Creator. Melchizedek’s offering of bread and wine, who was both
priest and king (Genesis 14:18), prefigured the offering made by Jesus,
our high priest and king. The unleavened bread at Passover and the
miraculous manna in the desert are the pledge of God's faithfulness to
his promises. The "cup of blessing" at the end of the Jewish passover
meal points to the messianic expectation of the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Jesus gave a new and definitive meaning to the blessing of the bread and
the cup when he instituted the "Lord's Supper" or "Eucharist". He
speaks of the presence of his body and blood in this new meal. When at
the Last Supper Jesus described his blood “poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28), he was explaining his coming
crucifixion as a sacrifice for sins. His death on the cross fulfilled
the sacrifice of the paschal lamb. That is why John the Baptist called
him the “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Jesus made
himself an offering and sacrifice, a gift that was truly pleasing to the
Father. He “offered himself without blemish to God” (Hebrews 9:14) and
“gave himself as a sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2). This meal was a
memorial of his death and resurrection.
When we receive from the Lord’s table we unite ourselves to Jesus
Christ, who makes us sharers in his body and blood. Ignatius of Antioch
(35-107 A.D.) calls it the "one bread that provides the medicine of
immortality, the antidote for death, and the food that makes us live for
ever in Jesus Christ" (Ad Eph. 20,2). This supernatural food is healing
for both body and soul and strength for our journey heavenward. When you
approach the Table of the Lord, what do you expect to receive? Healing,
pardon, comfort, and rest for your soul? The Lord has much more for us,
more than we can ask or imagine. The principal fruit of receiving the
Eucharist is an intimate union with Christ. As bodily nourishment
restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens us in charity and
enables us to break with disordered attachments to creatures and to be
more firmly rooted in the love of Christ. Do you hunger for the "bread
of life"?
"Lord Jesus, you nourish and sustain us with your very own presence
and life. You are the "Bread of Life" and the "Cup of Salvation". May I
always hunger for you and be satisfied in you alone."
Psalm 116:12-18
12 What shall I render to the LORD for all his bounty to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,
14 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
16 O LORD, I am thy servant; I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid.
Thou hast loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the
name of the LORD.
18 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people

Experts Confront Problem
of Euthanasia by
Omission
Underline Papal
Teaching on Care for
Patients in Persistent
Comas
PHILADELPHIA,
Pennsylvania, JUNE
11, 2009 ( Zenit.org).-
A group of experts
are highlighting
papal teaching that
people in persistent
comas should be
nourished regardless
of the cost, as an
ordinary duty of
persons to one
another.
This was affirmed in
an article published
this month in the
journal of the
National Catholic
Bioethics Center,
Ethics and Medics,
signed by a group of
15 scholars.
Some of the
contributing
scholars are: Robert
George,
jurisprudence
professor at
Princeton
University; William
May, retired moral
theology professor
at the John Paul II
Institute for
Studies on Marriage
and Family;
Christian Brugger,
moral theology
professor at St.
John Vianney
Theological
Seminary; and Father
Thomas Berg,
executive director
of Westchester
Institute for Ethics
and the Human
Person.
They responded to a
statement published
in the February
issue of Commonweal,
written by a
consortium
consisting of seven
directors of
bioethics programs
at Jesuit
universities, about
the "papal teaching
on the moral
requirement to
provide food and
water to patients in
the so-called
persistent
vegetative state."
The aim of the
consortium, the
scholars asserted,
"is to influence the
American bishops
against amending the
'Ethical and
Religious Directives
for Catholic Health
Care Services.'"
The article reported
that this month the
bishops will
consider the
amendment which will
"bring the
directives in line
with the March 2004
teaching of Pope
John Paul II" on the
"persistent
vegetative state."
The scholars
underlined a 1992
document by the
pro-life committee
of the U.S. bishops
titled "Nutrition
and Hydration: Moral
and Pastoral
Reflections," which
"warned against any
removal of food and
water from persons
in the vegetative
state based on a
'quality of life'
judgment about the
value of their lives
or on the cost of
total care."
Although the
prelates did not at
that time explicitly
include patients in
the vegetative
state, they noted
that this was only
because they were
waiting for the
official word from
the magisterium,
which came with Pope
John Paul II.
The article reported
the Pope's statement
that "providing food
and water to
patients in a
[persistent
vegetative state] is
morally required,
even when doing so
does not facilitate
the patient's
recovery from the
comatose condition."
It explained:
"Providing food and
water should not be
considered a medical
act strictly
speaking, but an
ordinary and
proportionate means
of caring for
disabled patients;
the Pope calls them
forms of basic
health care to which
every patient, no
matter how disabled,
has a right.
"The administration
of nutrition and
hydration is thus
morally obligatory,
provided that they
remain useful for
accomplishing their
end, namely, to
nourish the patient
and preserve his or
her life."
Consistent
The teaching of Pope
John Paul II, the
scholars asserted,
"is consistent with
what the Church has
explicitly taught on
the subject for the
last 30 years."
The article also
responded to the
consortium's claim
that the papal
teaching is "out of
touch with American
medical and legal
realities," stating
that the Jesuit
group missed the
point of the Pope's
words.
The scholars
clarified: "The
Pope's statement
that feeding and
hydrating disabled
patients 'always
represents a natural
means of preserving
life, not a medical
act' is not a
judgment about the
complexity of health
care procedures.
"It is a normative
judgment about the
basic duties of
persons to one
another based on
'the intrinsic value
and personal dignity
of every human
being.'
"Feeding disabled
people is not a
medical treatment,
even though a
medical procedure
may be required. It
is a form of care
owed to all persons,
including patients
in a [persistent
vegetative state]."
The scholars noted
that "the papal
teaching nowhere
requires a specific
form of nutrition
and hydration,
especially if
expense poses an
unreasonable
burden."
However, they added,
"it does forbid
choosing to withhold
all food and water
when a patient needs
them to survive and
they do not impose
undue burdens on
that patient."
The main concern of
the papal teaching,
the scholars stated,
"is to confront the
growing problem of
euthanasia by
omission for
patients in a
[persistent
vegetative state]."
The article
asserted, "The Holy
See's teaching that
assisted feeding is
a part of normal
care does not stop
being true just
because the
patient's cognitive
loss is due to
something other than
a [persistent
vegetative state]."
The article affirmed
that the health care
guidelines should be
amended if they are
unclear in these
principles and "lend
themselves to
justifying the
removal of food and
water from patients
in a [persistent
vegetative state],
or any cognitively
diminished
patients."

Pope Warns Secularism Can Infest Church
Cautions Against Worship Lacking Heart
ROME, JUNE 11, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is warning of a "serpentine secularization" that penetrates the Church and is manifested in "formal and empty Eucharistic worship."
The Pope celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi today in Rome, presiding over Mass in the Basilica of St. John Lateran and then processing with the Blessed Sacrament to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
In his homily, the Holy Father illustrated the importance of faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, telling the thousands of pilgrims that this faith "cannot be taken for granted."
"Today there arises the risk of a serpentine secularization even within the Church, which can convert into a formal and empty Eucharistic worship, in celebrations lacking this participation from the heart that is expressed in veneration and respect for the liturgy," he cautioned.
According to the Pontiff, "the temptation is always strong to reduce prayer to superficial and hurried moments, letting oneself be carried away by earthly activities and worries."
And nevertheless, he added, the Eucharist is "the bread of eternal life of the new world that is given us today in the holy Mass, so that starting now the future world begins in us."
"With the Eucharist, therefore, heaven comes down to earth, the tomorrow of God descends into the present and it is as if time remains embraced by divine eternity," the Bishop of Rome explained.
He didn't hide his joy at being able to accompany the Blessed Sacrament along the path to St. Mary Major; he invited the faithful to raise up this prayer: "Stay with us, Christ, give to us the gift of yourself and give us the bread that nourishes us for eternal life.
"Free this world from the venom of evil, of violence and of hate, which contaminate consciences; purify it with the power of your merciful love."

Blessed
Jolenta (Yolanda) of Poland
(d.
1298)
Jolenta
was the daughter of Bela IV, King of Hungary. Her sister, St. Kunigunde,
was married to the Duke of Poland. Jolenta was sent to Poland where her
sister was to supervise her education. Eventually married to Boleslaus,
the Duke of Greater Poland, Jolenta was able to use her material means
to assist the poor, the sick, widows and orphans. Her husband joined her
in building hospitals, convents and churches so that he was surnamed
"the Pious."
Upon the death of her husband and the marriage of two of her daughters,
Jolenta and her third daughter entered the convent of the Poor Clares.
War forced Jolenta to move to another convent where, despite her
reluctance, she was made abbess.
So
well did she serve her Franciscan sisters by word and example that her
fame and good works continued to spread beyond the walls of the
cloister. Her favorite devotion was the Passion of Christ. Indeed, Jesus
appeared to her, telling her of her coming death. Many miracles, down to
our own day, are said to have occurred at her grave.
Comment:
Jolenta’s story begins like a fairy tale. But fairy tales seldom include
the death of the prince and never end with the princess living
out her days in a convent. Nonetheless, Jolenta’s story has a happy
ending. Her life of charity toward the poor and devotion to her
Franciscan sisters indeed brought her to a “happily ever after.” Our
lives may be short on fairy-tale elements, but our generosity and our
willingness to serve well the people we live with lead us toward an
ending happier than we can imagine.

St.
Anthony of Padua
(1195-1231)
The
gospel call to leave everything and follow Christ was the rule of
Anthony’s life. Over and over again God called him to something new in
his plan. Every time Anthony responded with renewed zeal and
self-sacrificing to serve his Lord Jesus more completely.
<>His journey as the servant of God began as a very young man when he
decided to join the Augustinians in Lisbon, giving up a future of wealth
and power to be a servant of God. Later, when the bodies of the first
Franciscan martyrs went through the Portuguese city where he was
stationed, he was again filled with an intense longing to be one of
those closest to Jesus himself: those who die for the Good News.
So
Anthony entered the Franciscan Order and set out to preach to the Moors.
But an illness prevented him from achieving that goal. He went to Italy
and was stationed in a small hermitage where he spent most of his time
praying, reading the Scriptures and doing menial tasks.
The call of God came again at an ordination where no one was prepared to
speak. The humble and obedient Anthony hesitantly accepted the task. The
years of searching for Jesus in prayer, of reading sacred Scripture and
of serving him in poverty, chastity and obedience had prepared Anthony
to allow the Spirit to use his talents. Anthony’s sermon was astounding
to those who expected an unprepared speech and knew not the Spirit’s
power to give people words.
Recognized as a great man of prayer and a great Scripture and theology
scholar, Anthony became the first friar to teach theology to the other
friars. Soon he was called from that post to preach to the Albigensian
in France, using his profound knowledge of Scripture and theology to
convert and reassure those who had been misled.
After he led the friars in northern Italy for three years, he made his
headquarters in the city of Padua. He resumed his preaching and began
wrtiting sermon notes to help other preachers.
Comment:
Anthony should be the patron of those who find their lives completely
uprooted and set in a new and unexpected direction. Like all saints, he
is a perfect example of turning one's life completely over to Christ.
God did with Anthony as God pleased—and what God pleased was a life of
spiritual power and brilliance that still attracts admiration today. He
whom popular devotion has nominated as finder of lost objects found
himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God.
Quote:
In
his semon notes, Anthony writes: "The saints are like the stars. In his
providence Christ conceals them in a hidden place that they may not
shine before others when they might wish to do so. Yet they are always
ready to exchange the quiet of contemplation for the works of mercy as
soon as they perceive in their heart the invitation of Christ."

St.
Albert Chmielowski
(1845-1916)
Born
in Igolomia near Kraków as the eldest of four children in a wealthy
family, he was christened Adam. During the 1864 revolt against Czar
Alexander III, Adam’s wounds forced the amputation of his left leg.
His great talent for painting led to studies in Warsaw, Munich and
Paris. Adam returned to Kraków and became a Secular Franciscan. In 1888
he took the name Albert when he founded the Brothers of the Third Order
of Saint Francis, Servants to the Poor. They worked primarily with the
homeless, depending completely on alms while serving the needy,
regardless of age, religion or politics. A community of Albertine
sisters was established later.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1983 and canonized him six years
later.
Comment:
Reflecting on his own priestly vocation, Pope John Paul II wrote in 1996
that Brother Albert had played a role in its formation "because I found
in him a real spiritual support and example in leaving behind the world
of art, literature and the theater, and in making the radical choice of
a vocation to the priesthood" (Gift and Mystery: On the Fiftieth
Anniversay of My Priestly Ordination, p. 33). As a young priest,
Karol Wojtyla repaid his debt of gratitude by writing The Brother of
Our God, a play about Brother Albert’s life.
Quote:
The first reading at the canonization included Isaiah 58:6 (“Is not this
the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the
thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every
yoke?”). The pope referred to this passage and said: “This is the
theology of messianic liberation, which contains what we are accustomed
to calling today the ‘option for the poor’.... In this tireless, heroic
service on behalf of the marginalized and the poor, he [Albert]
ultimately found his path. He found Christ. He took upon himself
Christ’s yoke and burden; he did not become merely ‘one of those who
give alms,’ but became the brother to those he served....” (L'Osservatore
Romano 1989, Vol. 49, No. 9).

CHAPTER I.
ST. JOSEPH RESOLVES TO LEAVE HIS SPOUSE.
All that passed in the heart of saint Joseph was
known to the Princess of heaven, who penetrated into its interior by the
light of her divine science. Although her soul was full of tenderness
and compassion for the sufferings of her spouse, She said not a word in
the matter; but She continued to serve him with all devotion and
solicitude. The man of God watched Her without outward demonstration,
yet with a greater anxiety than that of any man that ever lived. The
pregnancy of most holy Mary was not burdensome or painful to Her; but as
the great Lady in serving him at table or any other domestic
occupations, necessarily disclosed her state more and more openly, saint
Joseph noticed all these actions and movements and with deep affliction
of soul verified all his observations. Notwithstanding his being a holy
and just man, he permitted himself to be respected and served by the
most holy Virgin after their espousal, claiming in all things the
position of head and husband of the family, though with rare humility
and prudence. As long as he was ignorant of the mystery of his Spouse he
judged it right, within befitting limits, to show his authority in
imitation of the ancient Fathers and Patriarchs. For he knew that they
demanded subjection and prompt obedience of their wives, and he did not
wish to recede from their example. He would have been right in this
course if most holy Mary, our Lady, had been no more than other women.
Yet although there was such a great difference, no woman ever existed or
will exist who was or will be so obedient, humble and devoted to her
husband as the most exalted Queen was toward her spouse. She served him
with incomparable respect and promptitude; although She knew his
troubled thoughts and observations concerning her pregnancy. She omitted
no service due to him, nor did She try to conceal or palliate her state.
For such evasion or duplicity would not have consorted with the angelic
truthfulness and openness, nor with the nobility and magnanimity of her
generous heart.
The great Lady could easily have asserted her entire
innocence and referred to the testimony of saint Elisabeth and Zacharias;
for, if saint Joseph had any suspicion of guilt in Her, he could
naturally have supposed it to have been incurred during her stay with
them. Hence, through them and by other references, She could have
justified Herself and quieted the anxieties of saint Joseph without
disclosing the mystery. The Mistress of prudence and humility did
nothing of the kind; for these virtues did not allow Her to think of
Herself, nor to trust the justification of her mysterious condition to
her own explanation. With great wisdom She resigned the whole matter
into the hands of divine Providence. Although her compassion for her
spouse and her love for him made Her anxious to console and comfort him,
She would not do it by clearing Herself or by concealing her pregnancy,
but rather by serving him with more devoted demonstrations of love, and
by trying to cheer him up, asking him what She could do for him and
lovingly showing her devoted and submissive affection. Many times She
served him on her knees, and although this somewhat consoled saint
Joseph, yet on the other hand, it was also a cause for new grief. For
thus he only saw the motives of love and esteem multiplied and still
remained uncertain whether She had been untrue or not. The heavenly Lady
offered up continual prayers for him and besought the Most High to look
upon him and console him; as for the rest She submitted all to the will
of his Majesty.
Saint Joseph could not entirely conceal his cruel
sorrow, and therefore he often appeared to be in doubt and sad suspense.
Sometimes, carried away by his grief, he spoke to his heavenly Spouse
with some degree of severity, such as he had not shown before. This was
the natural effect of the affliction of his heart not of anger or
vengeful feelings; for these never entered his thoughts, as we shall see
later. The most prudent Lady, however, never lost the sweetness of her
countenance, nor showed any feeling; but merely redoubled her efforts to
relieve her husband. She served at table, offered him a seat,
administered food and drink, and if, after all these services, which She
performed with incomparable grace, saint Joseph urged Her to sit down,
he could convince himself more and more of her pregnancy.
Yet although her sorrow exceeded all bounds, the
capacity of her generous and magnanimous soul was much greater and
therefore She could conceal her grief more completely, and occupy her
faculties in the loving care of saint Joseph, her spouse. Her sorrow
therefore only incited Her to attend so much the more devotedly to his
health and comfort. Nevertheless, as the inviolable rule of the actions
of the most prudent Queen was to perform all in the fullness of wisdom
and perfection, She continued to conceal the mystery about the
disclosure of which She had received no command. Though She alone could
relieve her spouse by an explanation, She withheld it in reverence and
faithfulness due to the sacrament of the heavenly King (Tob. 13, 7). As
far as She herself was concerned, She exerted her utmost powers; She
spoke to him about his health, She asked what She could do to serve him
and afford him help in the weakness which so mastered him. She urged him
to take some rest and recreation, since it was a duty to yield to
necessity and repair the weakened strength, in order to be able to work
for the Lord afterward.
The Princess of heaven, becoming aware of the resolve
of her spouse saint Joseph to leave Her and absent himself, turned in
great sorrow to her holy angels and said to them: "Blessed spirits and
ministers of the highest King, who raised you to felicity which you
enjoy, and by his kind Providence accompany me as his faithful servants
and as my guardians, I beseech you, my friends, to present before God's
clemency the afflictions of my spouse Joseph. Beseech the Lord to look
upon him and console him as a true Father. And you also, who so
devotedly obey his words, hear likewise my prayers; in the name of Him
who is infinite, and to whom I am to give human shape in my womb, I
pray, beseech and supplicate you, that without delay you assist and
relieve my most faithful spouse in the affliction of his heart and drive
from his mind and heart his resolve of leaving me." The angels which the
Queen selected for this purpose obeyed immediately and instilled into
the heart of saint Joseph many holy thoughts, persuading him anew that
his Spouse Mary was holy and most perfect, and that he could not believe
anything wrong of Her; that God was incomprehensible in his works, and
most hidden in his judgments (Ps. 33, 19); that He was always most
faithful to those who confide in him, and that He would never despise or
forsake them in tribulation.
By these and other holy inspirations the troubled
spirit of saint Joseph was somewhat quieted, although he did not know
whence they came; but as the cause of his sorrow was not removed, he
soon relapsed, not finding anything to assure and soothe his soul, and
he returned to his resolve of withdrawing and leaving his Spouse. The
heavenly Queen was aware of this and She concluded that it was necessary
to avert this danger and to insist in earnest prayer on a remedy. She
addressed Herself entirely to her most holy Son in her womb, and with
most ardent affection of her soul She prayed: "Lord and God of my soul,
with thy permission, although I am but dust and ashes (Gen. 8,
27), I will speak in thy kingly presence and manifest to Thee my sighs,
that cannot be hidden from Thee (Ps. 37, 19). It is my duty not to be
remiss in assisting the spouse whom I have received from thy hand. I see
him overwhelmed by the tribulation, which Thou hast sent him, and it
would not be kind in me to forsake him therein. If I have found grace in
thy eyes, I beseech Thee, Lord and eternal God, by the love which
obliged Thee to enter into the womb of thy servant for the salvation of
mankind, to be pleased to console thy servant Joseph and dispose him to
assist me in the fulfillment of thy great works. It would not be well
that I, thy servant, be left without a husband for a protection and
guardian. Do not permit, my Lord and God, that he execute his resolve
and withdraw from me."
The Most High answered Her: "My dearest Dove, I shall
presently visit my servant Joseph with consolation; and after I shall
have manifested to him by my angel the sacrament, which is unknown to
him, thou mayest speak openly about all that I have done with thee,
without the necessity of keeping silent thenceforward in these matters.
I will fill him with my spirit and make him apt to perform his share in
these mysteries. He will assist Thee in them and aid Thee in all that
will happen." With this promise of the Lord, most holy Mary was
comforted and consoled, and She gave most fervent thanks to the same
Lord, who disposes all things in admirable order, measure and weight.
For besides the consolation, which the relief from this anxiety afforded
Her. She also knew well how proper it was that the spirit of saint
Joseph be tried and dilated by this tribulation before the great
mysteries should be entrusted to his care,
In the meanwhile saint Joseph was anxiouslv debating
within himself concerning the proper course or action, for he had borne
his tribulation already for two months; and now, overcome by the
greatness of it, he argued with himself: "I do not find a better way out
of these difficulties than to absent myself. I confess that my Spouse is
most perfect and exhibits nothing but what shows Her a saint; but after
all She is pregnant and of it I cannot fathom the mystery. I do not wish
to injure Her reputation of holiness by involving Her in the punishment
of the law; yet at the same time I cannot stand by and witness the
consequences of her pregnancy. I will leave her now, and commit myself
to the providence of the Lord, who governs me." He then resolved to
depart during that night, and in order to prepare for his journey he
packed some clothes and other trifles into a small bundle. Having also
claimed some wages due to him for his work, he retired to rest with the
intention of leaving at midnight. But on account of the strangeness of
his undertaking, and because he was in the habit of commending his
intentions to God in prayer, after he had come to this resolve he spoke
to the Lord: "Highest and eternal God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob, Thou true and only refuge of the poor and afflicted, the grief
and tribulation of my heart are well known to thy clemency. Thou knowest
also, O Lord (although I am unworthy), that I am innocent of that which
causes my sorrow, and Thou likewise art aware of the infamy and danger
consequent upon the condition of my Spouse. I do not believe Her an
adulteress, because I see in Her great virtue and perfection; yet I
certainly see Her pregnant. I do not know by whom or how it was caused;
and therefore I find no way to restore my peace. In order to choose the
least evil I will withdraw from Her and seek a place where no one knows
me and, resigning myself to thy Providence, I will pass my life in a
desert. Do not forsake me, my Lord and eternal God, since I desire
solely thy honor and service.
Saint Joseph prostrated himself on the ground and
made a vow to go to the temple of Jerusalem and offer up a part of the
small sum of money which he had provided for his journey, in order that
God might help and protect Mary his Spouse from the calamities of men
and free Her from all misfortune; for great was the uprightness of that
man of God, and the esteem in which he held the heavenly Lady. After
this prayer he composed himself for a short sleep with the intention of
departing in secret and at midnight from his Spouse. During this sleep,
however, happened what I will relate in the next chapter. The great
Princess of heaven, (assured by the divine promise), observed from her
retirement all that saint Joseph was preparing to do; for the Almighty
showed it to Her. And hearing the vow, which he made for her welfare,
and seeing the small bundle and the poor provision he prepared for his
journey, She was filled with tender compassion and prayed anew for him,
giving praise and thanks to the Lord for his Providence in guiding the
actions of men beyond all human power of comprehension. His Majesty so
ordained events, that both most holy Mary and saint Joseph should be
brought to the utmost reach of interior sorrow.
In these operations of course, the last reason is
always the divine will itself, just, holy and perfect. However, as far
as I have understood, I will partly mention some other reasons in
explanation. The first reason is, that saint Joseph was so prudent,
filled with such heavenly light, and had such high conception of our
most holy Lady, the blessed Mary, that it was not necessary to convince
him by strong evidence, in order to assure him of her dignity and of the
mysteries of the Incarnation; for in hearts well-disposed the divine
inspirations find easy entrance. The second reason is, because his
trouble had its beginning in the senses, namely in seeing with his eyes
the pregnancy of his Spouse; hence it was a just retribution, that they,
having given occasion for deception or suspicion, should as it were be
deadened or repressed by the privation of the angelic vision. The third
reason is as it were a sequence of this last one: saint Joseph, although
he was guilty of no fault, was under the influence of his affliction and
his senses were so to say deadened and incapacitated for the sensible
perception and intercourse of the angel. Therefore it was befitting,
that the angel deliver this message to him at a time, when the senses,
which had been scandalized, were inactive and suspended in their
operations. Thus the holy man might afterwards, regaining their full
use, purify and dispose himself by many acts of virtue for entertaining
the operation of the holy Spirit which had been entirely interrupted by
his troubles.

DIVINE MERCY
|

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook III
July 4, 1937. First
Sunday of the month. - monthly retreat.
This evening I prepared with great care and prayed long to the Holy Spirit
that He might deign to grant me His light and take me under His special
guidance: (I prayed) also to Our Lady, to my Guardian Angel, and to our
patron saints.
Fruit of meditation.
Whatever Jesus did, He did well. He went along, doing good. His manner was
full of goodness and mercy. His steps were guided by compassion. Towards His
enemies He showed goodness, kindness and understanding, and to those in need
help and consolation.
I resolved to mirror faithfully these traits of Jesus in myself during this
month, even if it costs me much.
During Adoration, I heard a voice in my soul:
"These efforts of yours, My daughter, are pleasing to Me; they are the
delight of My Heart. I see every movement of your heart with which you
worship Me."
Particular exam.
Continuation of the same: to unite myself with the merciful Christ. For the
sake of His sorrowful Passion, I will entreat the heavenly Father for the
whole world. A point of rule: strict observance of silence.
I must probe the depths of my being and thank God for everything, uniting
myself with Jesus. With Him, in Him, and through Him, I give glory to God.
O Lord, my Love, I thank You for this day on which You have allowed me to
draw a wealth of graces from the fountain of Your fathomable mercy. O Jesus,
not only today, but at every moment, I draw from Your unfathomable mercy
everything that the soul and body could want.
July 7, 1937. In times of doubt; that is when the soul is weak, let it ask
Jesus himself to act. Although it knows that it should act by the grace of
God, nevertheless, at certain times, it is better for it to leave all action
to God.
June (July) 15, 1937. Once, I learned that I was to be transferred to
another house. My knowledge of this was purely interior. At the same time, I
heard a voice in my soul: "Do not be afraid, My
daughter; it is My will that you should remain here. Human plans will be
thwarted, since they must conform to My will."
When I was close to the Lord, He said to me,
"Why are you afraid to begin the work which I
have commanded you to carry out? I answered,
"Why do You leave me on my own at such times, Jesus, and why do I not feel
Your presence?" "My daughter, even though you do
not perceive Me in the most secret depths of your heart, you still cannot
say that I am not there. I only remove from you the awareness of My
presence, and that should not be an obstacle to the carrying out of My will.
I do this to achieve My unfathomable ends, which you will know of later on.
"My daughter, know that without doubt, and once and for all, only mortal sin
drives Me out of a soul, and nothing else."
Today the Lord said to me,
"My daughter, My pleasure and delight, nothing
will stop Me from granting you graces. Your misery does not hinder My mercy.
My daughter, write that the greater the misery of a soul, the greater the
right to My mercy; (urge) all souls to trust in the unfathomable abyss of My
mercy, because I want to save them all. On the cross, the fountain of My
mercy was opened wide by all the lance for all souls - no one have I
excluded!"
O Jesus, I want to live in the present moment,
to live as if this were the last day of my life. I want to use every moment
scrupulously for the greater glory of God, to use every circumstance for the
benefit of my soul. I want to look upon everything, from the point of view
that nothing happens without the will of God.
God of unfathomable mercy, embrace the whole world and pour Yourself out
upon us through the merciful Heart of Jesus.
On an earlier occasion.
In the evening, I saw the Lord Jesus upon the cross. From His hands, feet
and side, the Most Sacred Blood was flowing. After sometime, Jesus said to
me, "All this is for the salvation of souls.
Consider well, My daughter, what you are doing for their salvation."
I answered "Jesus, when I look at Your
suffering, I see that I am doing next to nothing for the salvation of
souls". And the Lord said to me, "Know, My
daughter, that your silent day to day martyrdom in complete submission to My
will ushers many souls into heaven. And when it seems to you that your
suffering exceeds your strength, contemplate My wounds, and you will rise
above human scorn and judgment. Meditation on My Passion will help you rise
above all things." I understood many things I
had been unable to comprehend before.
July 9, 1937. This evening, one of the deceased sisters came and asked me
for one day of fasting and to offer all my (spiritual) exercises on that day
for her. I answered that I would.
From early morning on the following day, I offered everything for her
intention. During Holy Mass. I had a brief experience of her torment. I
experienced such intense hunger for God that I seemed to be dying of the
desire to become united with Him. This lasted only a short time, but I
understood what the longings of the souls in purgatory was like.
Immediately after Holy Mass, I asked Mother Superior's permission to fast,
but I did not receive it because of my illness. When I entered the chapel,
"If you had fasted, Sister, I would not have gotten relief until the
evening, but for the sake of your obedience, which prevented you from
fasting, I obtained this relief at once. Obedience has great power". And
after these words I heard, "May God reward you".
I often pray for Poland, but I see that God is very angry with it because of
its ingratitude. I exert all the strength of my soul to defend it. I
constantly remind God of the promises of His mercy. When I see His anger, I
throw myself trustingly into the abyss of His mercy, and I plunge all Poland
in it, and then He cannot use His justice. My country, how much you cost me!
There is no day in which I do not pray for you.
A sentence from Saint Vincent de Paul: "The Lord always sets His hand to a
task when He removes all human means and orders us to do a thing that
exceeds our strength")
Jesus---- "From all My wounds, like from streams,
mercy flows for souls, but the wound in My Heart is the fountain of
unfathomable mercy. From this fountain spring all graces for souls. The
flames of compassion burn Me. I desire greatly to pour them out upon souls.
Speak to the world about My mercy."
As long as we live, the love of God grows in
us. Until we die, we ought to strive for the love of God. I have learned and
experienced that souls living in love are distinguished in this: that they
are greatly enlightened concerning the things of God, both in their own
souls and in the souls of others. And simple souls, without an education,
are outstanding for their knowledge.
At the fourteen station. I get the strange feeling that Jesus is going into
the ground.
When my soul is in anguish, I think only in this way: Jesus is good and full
of mercy, and even if the ground were to give way under my feet, I would not
cease to trust in Him.
Today, I have heard these words; "My daughter,
delight of My Heart, it is with great pleasure that I look into your soul. I
bestow many graces only because of you. I also withhold My punishments only
because of you. You restrain Me, and I cannot vindicate the claims of My
justice. You bind My hands with your love."
July 13, 1937. Today, Jesus has given me light as to how I should behave
toward one of the sisters, who had asked me about many spiritual matters
concerning which she had doubts. But basically this was not the question;
she only wanted to find out my opinion in these matters in order to have
something to say about me to the other sisters. Oh, if at least she had
repeated the same words that I had spoken to her without distortion and
additions! Jesus put me in my guard in respect to her. I resolved to pray
for her, because only prayer can enlighten that soul.
O my Jesus, nothing can lower my ideals; that is, the love which I have for
You. Although the path is very thorny, I do not fear to go ahead. Even if a
hailstorm of persecutions covers me; even if my friends forsake me, even if
all things conspire against me, and the horizon grows dark; even if a raging
storm breaks out, and I feel I am quite alone and must brave it all; still,
fully at peace, I will trust in Your mercy, O my God, and my hope will not
be disappointed.
Today, when a certain sister who was on duty approached me in the refectory
(the sisters' dining room, where assigned sisters serve at the time of
common meals), I experienced severe suffering in the places of the Wounds. I
was given to know the state of her soul. I prayed much for her.
Sudden calming of a storm. There was a terrible storm last night. I bowed my
face to the ground and started to say the Litany of the Saints. Towards the
end of the Litany, such drowsiness came over me that I could in no way
finish the prayer. Then I got up and said to the Lord, "Jesus, calm the
storm, for Your child is unable to pray any longer, I am heavy with sleep".
After these words, I threw the window wide open, not even securing it with
hooks. Sister N (probably Sister Fabiola Pawluk) then said to me, "Sister,
what are you doing! The wind will surely tear the window loose!" I told her
to sleep in peace, and at once the storm completely subsided. The next day,
the sisters talked about the sudden calming of the storm, not knowing what
this meant. I said nothing, but I merely thought within myself: Jesus and
little Faustina know what it means....

(continued)
The 21-year-old that danced in, and I'll
never forget her for as long as I live. She was my son's age. Danced in
to get her "problem" taken care of. Had the extra money to be put to
sleep. And you see, my job with two of those doctors was to put my right
hand on the baby and hold it while they did the abortion so I could tell
them where the head was and where the legs were, and all of that. And I
had my hand on that woman's stomach, and that baby was perfectly inside
her uterus; she had been examined by the doctor; and he said, yes, the
baby was inside her uterus and everything was fine and she was 24-weeks.
And he went in one time, and he pulled out placenta, and he went in the
second time and he went through the back of her uterus and pulled her
bowel out through her vagina. We put her in the car because we didn't
want an ambulance in front of the abortion clinic and we took her to the
hospital. Seven doctors worked on her and they did a colostomy on her.
When the reports came back, they said that it was an abdominal pregnancy
that had not been in the uterus, and seven doctors and a pathologist
concurred with that, and then the hospital wrote off her bill, and there
was no lawsuit, ever. She was told that had been a normal complication;
it was just amazing that she'd made it that long. And she didn't know
any better. And then the girl that the doctors decided had a fibroid
tumor at the back of her uterus. That's a highly common tumor that's
very rarely malignant. And the two doctors decided they were just going
to pull this out after she had her abortion, and they didn't know they
were pulling on the back of her uterus, and they pulled the uterus out
wrong-side-out of a 21- year-old; she had a hysterectomy.
Those are the ones that I remember. Those
are the ones that bother me. Those are the ones that I have to go
through and deal with and be healed of constantly. Because, you see, it
was like the mothers were presenting their babies to be killed. And it
was okay to kill 500 babies a month. But when we started killing or
maiming a mother for each 500 babies, even I couldn't handle that.
There are two problems that are going on
that we might be able to do something with, too. That is, that abortion
clinics, if they have someone that does present themselves thinking
they're pregnant and of course the test show they're not; that they're
going to sell that abortion to that non-pregnant woman. And every time
that you are standing in front of an abortion clinic, you are holding a
light on inside that clinic. You are holding those people accountable
and that day they are less likely to do the woman who is not pregnant
because they're scared of you. They think these crazy Pro-Lifers are
going to run in, chain themselves to the table. We had seven locks or
something from the front door to the back. They are less likely to do
that woman who is too far along that day too, because, you see, when the
babies are so big they don't come apart like the others. Their muscle
structure is strong that the heads come off from the body, and you can't
dispose of those in the disposal. You have to put those in the trash.
And we used to take ours over to opposition abortion clinics' trash and
hope they'd be found there.
But every time you're in front, you're
holding that light on. They slow down. An abortionist who brags and
thinks he can do eight to ten, maybe even twelve abortions an hour, with
a picketer in front of him, will slow down. Do four, six, three,
something--but he'll slow down. He's afraid of you.
If there is good medical care inside an
abortuary, the day you're standing out there is the day it happens. And
you asked me how I feel about what you do? First of all, in Dallas,
Texas, we have a guy named Winston Wilder, and thank you, Lord, for
Winston. When I finally got over the right side... That's another thing,
you don't see the defectors from the Pro-Life side to the abortion side,
did you ever notice that? The defection's this way, and there are a lot
of them. Winston and I sat down and I gave him all the names, addresses,
telephone numbers, business offices (because many times their partners
do not even know they do abortions). We had one guy called in from the
Bahamas because they suddenly started picketing his office, and his
partner didn't know he did abortions in the clinics. At their private
homes, many times their wives do not know they do abortions. Many times
their mother-in-law doesn't know they're doing abortions. Many times the
maid doesn't know they're doing abortions. Their neighbors, of course,
rarely know. But that's the most effective thing. Picket them where they
live. The clinics, yes, because it is my firm conviction that every day
abortion is done and we're not standing in front of the abortion clinic,
that we are held accountable. We must be there doing what they say that
we should do.
But even more important than that, I
believe at their homes and their private clinics where they're going in
and being closet abortionists. We do have responsibility; it's pretty

cuối
