DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Friday (9/4): "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?"

Scripture: Luke 5:33-39

33 And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." 36 He told them a parable also: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, `The old is good.'"

Meditation: Which comes first, fasting or feasting? The disciples of John the Baptist were upset with Jesus' disciples because they did not fast. Fasting was one of the three most important religious duties, along with prayer and almsgiving. Jesus gave a simple explanation. There's a time for fasting and a time for feasting (or celebrating). To walk as a disciple with Jesus is to experience a whole new joy of relationship akin to the joy of the wedding party in celebrating with the groom and bride their wedding bliss. But there also comes a time when the Lord's disciples must bear the cross of affliction and purification. For the disciple there is both a time for rejoicing in the Lord's presence and celebrating his goodness and a time for seeking the Lord with humility and fasting and for mourning over sin. Do you take joy in the Lord's presence with you and do you express sorrow and contrition for your sins?

Jesus goes on to warn his disciples about the problem of the "closed mind" that refuses to learn new things. Jesus used an image familiar to his audience – new and old wineskins. In Jesus' times, wine was stored in wineskins, not bottles. New wine poured into skins was still fermenting. The gases exerted gave pressure. New wine skins were elastic enough to take the pressure, but old wine skins easily burst because they were hard. What did Jesus mean by this comparison? Are we to reject the old in place of the new? Just as there is a right place and a right time for fasting and for feasting, so there is a right place for the old as well as the new.  Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (Matthew 13:52). How impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament or the New Testament, rather than both. The Lord gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new. He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants our minds and hearts to be like the new wine skins – open and ready to receive the new wine of the Holy Spirit. Are you eager to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God's word and plan for your life?

"Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit, that I may grow in the knowledge of your great love and truth. Help me to seek you earnestly in prayer and fasting that I may turn away from sin and wilfulness and conform my life more fully to your will. May I always find joy in knowing, loving, and serving you."

Psalm 37:3-6,27-28,39-40

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.
4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your vindication as the light, and your right as the noonday.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; so shall you abide for ever.
28 For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints.  The righteous shall be preserved for ever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their refuge in the time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked, and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Church in US Capital Fights for Marriage

Asks Authorities to Let the People Decide

WASHINGTON, D.C., SEPT. 3, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The Archdiocese of Washington is taking several steps to block a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage in the U.S. capital.

An archdiocesan press release reported Tuesday that Archbishop Donald Wuerl sent a letter to the 300 local priests to reinforce the significance of marriage, and to inform them of the government's efforts to at redefining it.

He stated, "One challenge we see today is a lack of understanding by many people about what marriage is."

"Marriage simply recognizes a relationship that is fundamental to nature: the complementarity of man and woman," the prelate explained.

He continued: "That relationship is not a creation of church or civil law.

"However, governments and faith groups recognize marriage as between a man and woman because the exclusive, mutual and lifelong gift of a husband and wife to each other is the most stable and secure foundation to create and nurture children."

The archdiocese also sent a letter to the District of Columbia's Board of Elections and Ethics, in favor of an initiative to allow voters to express their support for defining marriage in that city as the union between one man and one woman.

Ronald Jackson, executive director of the DC Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the archdiocese, stated, "A ballot initiative will give voters in the District of Columbia a voice on this critical issue."

"Earlier this year," he explained, "the City Council pushed through legal recognition of same-sex marriages from other states without even giving their constituents an opportunity to have input."

Jackson continued: "It is ironic that at the same time the city is asking for voting representation in the U.S. Congress, its leaders are denying residents the opportunity to participate in the democratic process for an issue with widespread implications for children and families."

5 More Pakistani Christians Killed

Church Insists on Investigation, Prosecution

HYDERABAD, Pakistan, SEPT. 3, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Five Christians were shot and killed in the northwestern Pakistani city of Quetta last week, bringing to more than a dozen the number of Christians slain in the country in recent weeks.

Vatican Radio reported Wednesday on the Aug. 28 killings, citing local sources.

At the end of July and beginning of August, as many as 11 Christians were killed in another attack, which also involved the burning of some 100 Christian homes. A Christian family died trapped inside one of the homes, as a mob outside promised to kill anyone who tried to escape the flames.

It is thought that the perpetrators of the two slayings are of the same group, extremists of "Taliban influence," Vatican Radio informed.

"Blasphemers"

Pakistani bishops have expressed their dismay at the lack of investigation into the earlier slaying.

Archbishop Lawrence Saldanha of Lahore, president of the Pakistani episcopal conference, lamented to UCANews that "a month has passed since the massacre and yet none of the accused has been punished."

"I am afraid," he added, "the culprits will go scot-free and the case will be put in cold storage."

Meanwhile, the World Council of Churches this week called on Pakistan to repeal its anti-blasphemy law, and urged the nation to "guarantee the rights of all religious minorities in the country."

The world council said the law keeps minorities living in a "state of fear and terror" since it is often invoked as a way to punish minorities in business disputes.

The law calls for life imprisonment or death for anyone insulting the Quran or Mohammed.

According to information from the Pakistani bishops' National Commission of Justice and Peace, since the law went into effect in 1986, nearly 1,000 people have been prosecuted, though the majority of them are Muslim. Some 120 Christians have been prosecuted under the law.

Christians in Pakistan make up about 1.6% of the population.

DAILY LITURGICAL SAINT

St. Rose of Viterbo
(1233-1251)

Rose achieved sainthood in only 18 years of life. Even as a child Rose had a great desire to pray and to aid the poor. While still very young, she began a life of penance in her parents’ house. She was as generous to the poor as she was strict with herself. At the age of 10 she became a Secular Franciscan and soon began preaching in the streets about sin and the sufferings of Jesus.

Viterbo, her native city, was then in revolt against the pope. When Rose took the pope’s side against the emperor, she and her family were exiled from the city. When the pope’s side won in Viterbo, Rose was allowed to return. Her attempt at age 15 to found a religious community failed, and she returned to a life of prayer and penance in her father’s home, where she died in 1251. Rose was canonized in 1457.

Comment:

The list of Franciscan saints seems to have quite a few men and women who accomplished nothing very extraordinary. Rose is one of them. She did not influence popes and kings, did not multiply bread for the hungry and never established the religious order of her dreams. But she made a place in her life for God’s grace, and like St. Francis before her, saw death as the gateway to new life.

Quote:

Rose's dying words to her parents were: "I die with joy, for I desire to be united to my God. Live so as not to fear death. For those who live well in the world, death is not frightening, but sweet and precious."

CHAPTER V.

THE BLESSED MOTHER OFFERS HER SON AS VICTIM TO THE

ETERNAL FATHER; JESUS DEPARTS FROM NAZARETH.

The love of our great Queen and Lady for her divine Son must always remain the standard by which we must measure as well her actions as all her emotions either of joy or sorrow during her earthly life. But we cannot measure the greatness of her love itself, nor can the holy angels measure it, except by the love which they see in God by the intuitive vision. All that can ever be expressed by our inadequate words, similes and analogies, is but the least portion of what this heavenly furnace of love really contained. For She loved Jesus as the Son of the eternal Father, equal to Him in essence and in all the divine attributes and perfections; She loved Him as her own natural Son, Son to Her in as far as He was man, formed of her own flesh and blood; She loved Him because as man He was the Saint of saints and the meritorious cause of all other holiness (Dan. 11, 24). He was the most beautiful among the sons of men (Ps. 44, 3). He was the most dutiful Son of his Mother, her most magnificent Benefactor; since it was He, that by his sonship, had raised Her to the highest dignity possible among creatures. He had exalted Her among all and above all by the treasures of his Divinity and by conferring upon Her the dominion over all creation together with favors, blessings and graces, such as were never to be conferred upon any other being.

These motives and foundations of her love were established and as it were, all comprehended in the wisdom of the heavenly Lady, together with many others, which only her exalted knowledge could appreciate. In her heart there was no hindrance of love, since it was the most innocent and pure; She was not ungrateful, because her profoundest humility urged Her to a most faithful correspondence; She was not remiss, because in Her the most abundant grace wrought with all its efficacy; She was not slow or careless since She was filled with most zealous and diligent fervor ; not forgetful, since her most faithful memory was constantly fixed upon the blessings received and upon the reasons and the precepts of deepest love. She moved in the sphere of the divine love itself, since She remained in his visible presence and attended the school of divine love of her Son, copying his works and his doings in his very company. Nothing was wanting to this peerless One among lovers for entertaining love without limitations of measure or manner. This most beautiful Moon then being at its fullness, and looking into this Sun of justice just as it had risen like a divine aurora from height to height and reached the noontide splendor of the most clear light of grace; this Moon, Mary, detached from all material creatures and entirely transformed by the light of this Sun, having experienced on her part all the effects of his reciprocal love, favors and gifts, in the height of her blessedness, at a time when the loss of all these blessings in her Son made it most arduous, heard the voice of the eternal Father, calling Her as once He called upon her prototype, Abraham, and demanding the deposit of all her love and hope, her beloved Isaac (Gen. 22, 1).

The most prudent Mother was not unaware, the time of her sacrifice was approaching; for her sweetest Son had already entered the thirtieth year of his life and the time and place for satisfying the debt He had assumed was at hand. But in the full possession of the Treasure, which represented all her happiness, Mary was still considering its loss as far off, not having as yet had its experience. The hour therefore drawing near, She was wrapt in a most exalted vision and felt that She was being called and placed in the presence of the throne of the most blessed Trinity. From it issued a voice of wonderful power saying to Her: "Mary, my Daughter and Spouse, offer to Me thy onlybegotten Son in sacrifice." By the living power of these words came to Her the light and intelligence of the Almighty's will, and in it the most blessed Mother understood the decree of the Redemption of man through the Passion and Death of her most holy Son, together with all that from now on would happen in the preaching and public life of the Savior. As this knowledge was renewed and perfected in Her, She felt her soul overpowered by sentiments of subjection, humility, love of God and man, compassion and tenderest Sorrow for all that her Son was to suffer.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul

The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary

NOTEBOOK V

January 20, 1938. I never cringe before anyone. I can't bear flattery, for humility is nothing but the truth. There is no cringing in true humility. Although I consider myself the least in the whole convent, on the other hand, I enjoy the honor of being the bride of Christ. Little matter that often I hear people say that I am proud, for I know that human judgment does not discern the motives of our actions.

When, at the beginning of my religious life, following the novitiate, I began to exercise myself particularly in humility, the humiliations that God sent me were not enough for me. And so, in my excessive zeal, I looked for more of them on my own, and I often represented myself to my superiors other than I was in reality and spoke of miseries of which I had no notion. But a short time later, Jesus gave me to know that humility is only the truth. From that time on, I changed my ideas, faithfully following the light of Jesus. I learned that if a soul is with Jesus, He will not permit it to err.

Lord, You know that since my youth I have always sought Your will and recognizing it, have always tried to carry it out. My heart has been accustomed to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit, to whom I am faithful. In the midst of the greatest din I have heard the voice of God. I always know that is going on in my interior.....

I am striving for sanctity, because in this way I shall be useful to the Church. I make constant efforts in practicing virtue. I try faithfully to follow Jesus. And I deposit this whole series of daily virtues - silent, hidden, almost imperceptible, but made with great love - in the treasury of God's Church for the common benefit of souls. I feel interiorly as if I were responsible for all souls. I know very well that I do not live for myself alone, but for the entire Church...

O incomprehensible God, my heart dissolves in joy that You have allowed me to penetrate the mysteries of Your mercy! Everything begins with Your mercy and ends with Your mercy.

All grace flows from mercy, and the last hour abounds with mercy for us. Let no one doubt concerning the goodness of God; even if a person's sins were as dark as night, God's mercy is stronger than our misery. One thing alone is necessary: that the sinner set ajar the door of his heart, be it ever so little, to let in a ray of God's merciful grace, and then God will do the rest. But poor is the soul who has shut the door on God's mercy, even at the last hour. It was just such souls who plunged Jesus into deadly sorrow in the Garden of Olives; indeed, it was from His Most Merciful Heart that divine mercy flowed out.

 CATHOLIC  TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY

Show the American people what an abortion is!

                     (continued)

·                                 I am so glad there is a site like this, that way maybe someone can look on here before deciding to go through with one. I wish the doctors had to show the woman pictures of what the baby looks like at the time, and then what it looks like when they get an abortion.

·                                 A friend emailed me the link to your site because of the beautiful ultra sound pictures. My husband and I are trying to conceive and she thought it would be neat to look at. At the same time she warned me of the graphic pics at the site as well. I must say that while they are graphic and heartbreaking, it's truth. Truth is what some people need more of. I must admit, I used to be pro-choice. That is, until I miscarried at 8 weeks in May of 2000. After that heartbreaking loss, I decided that from the beginning, from the time I knew I was pregnant, that was a baby inside of me - a life, no matter the "stage" it was in. From there, I made the decision to be pro-life. I think that more women should have to see your site - to see what it is that when they are having abortions, they are destroying life. God Bless you and God bless those babies that are now his angels.

·                                 I am just emailing to let you know that I am very pleased with what you are doing! I am a devout Catholic and I totally agree with you! I looked through your website, and I must say that anyone who looks at those pictures (especially those who are thinking about abortion) surely must find it in their hearts not to go through with this! It’s a shame that most people don’t think before they do! I do not understand this country of ours! We convict murders, but we do not convict those who perform abortions! It doesn’t make any sense! ! ! May God continue to bless you in your work!

·                                 YES I THINK THESE HORRIBLE IMAGES SHOULD BE SHOWN!!!!!!!!!! AND I THINK THEY SHOULD BE SHOWN ON PRIME TIME TV. i.e. 48 HRS OR ONE OF THOSE SHOWS! LIKE SO MANY OTHER VIOLENT THINGS THEY SHOW, IT COULD BE ANNOUNCED "NOT FOR SMALL CHILDREN". I KNOW PEOPLE WOULD BE HORRIFIED THAT IT WAS SHOWN, BUT THEY NEED TO SEE IT AND THEY NEED TO BE HORRIFIED AT WHAT GOES ON EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY!!!!!! The way I look at it, there is no other way to stop it! If people can’t stand to see those images, that means they prefer to be in denial AND if they’re in denial nothing will ever be done about it. I can’t even put into words what I felt looking at those horrible pictures. It sends fear through my whole being at the wrath that God will bring down on this world for allowing such a thing.

·                                 Thank you for your efforts to reveal the barbarism of abortion. As I looked at the images, my heart broke for the children and for the judgement of God that MUST come upon America because of the brutal destruction of this innocent life. I don’t know if you get hardened after seeing these images frequently or if you heart breaks again each time. But whatever the cost you paid here, thank you for getting the word out of the reality of what is happening.

·                                 I just want to say that the graphic images you portrayed were horrible, unimaginable. The reality is that this type of killing goes on everyday. I applaud you for showing this real graphic horrible truth that these pictures capture. I think if more people saw these images maybe just maybe some hearts and minds would be changed. I am 12 weeks pregnant right now and was really amazed at the child's development at this stage. In my heart and mind I thanked God that I was taught early on of the evils of abortion and lucky because of my knowledge my baby would never be subjected to this type of pain.

·                                 Since I fell asleep while watching television earlier this evening, I am now rested and up and turned my television on to EWTN and heard the speaker talk about abortions and to go to your website, so I did. Your website is something I think everyone should be told about in our parishes and homes. It is sooooo vivid and such horribly sad pictures. Your web pictures of these abortions, as horrible and vivid as they are, need to be seen by America.... by the World! Catholics and Protestants. I believe if more people visualize what abortion truly is and how horrible it is...some people need to see pictures.... they can’t visualize without them....they would not have an abortion, more people would be involved in stopping abortions, praying more to stop abortion and writing and insisting that the Congress stop allowing abortions. You are doing great work. God Bless All of You.

·                                 After viewing the on-line photos of aborted babies on your web site, I nauseously encourage you to continue to fight for the right to show abortion on national television in spite of opposition. God’s word tells us that the truth will set us free.

I was looking at your website, I don’t know why, and I looked through the archives. I knew what abortion was, these images still managed to tear my heart out. Thanks for the reminder.

                           (to be continued)

From the inception of his pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is so horrific that words alone can never convey its meaning.

Fr. Frank serves on the board of the Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn from other social reform movements is being prepared.

We present here some of the grim reality of abortion. Only seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to this injustice.

These images are arranged according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist, Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted children.

It is especially critical to show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that the myth persists that they are not really children at all.

We thank all of you who have contacted us to tell us about how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others this horrible reality.

God, have mercy. Amen.·
