DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Monday (9/21): "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice"

Scripture:  Matthew 9:9-13  (alternate reading: Luke 8:16-18)

9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him. 10 And as he sat at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"  12 But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  13 Go and learn what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

Meditation: What is God's call on your life? Jesus chose Matthew to be his follower and friend, not because Matthew was religious or learned, popular or saintly. Matthew appeared to be none of those. He chose to live a life of wealth and ease. His profession was probably the most corrupted and despised by everyone because tax collectors made themselves wealthy by over-charging and threatening people if they did not hand over their money to them. What did Jesus see in Matthew that others did not see? When the prophet Samuel came to the house of Jesse to anoint the future heir to the throne of Israel, he bypassed all the first seven sons and chose the last! "God looks at the heart and not at the appearance of a man" he declared. David's heart was like a compass looking for true north – it pointed to God. Matthew's heart must have yearned for God, even though he dare not show his face in a synagogue – the Jewish house of prayer and the study of Torah – God's law. When Jesus saw Matthew sitting at his tax office – no doubt counting his day's profit – Jesus spoke only two words – "follow me". Those two words changed Matthew from a self-serving profiteer to a God-serving apostle who would bring the treasures of God's kingdom to the poor and needy.

John Chrysostom, the great 5th century church father, describes Matthew's calling: "Why did Jesus not call Matthew at the same time as he called Peter and John and the rest? He came to each one at a particular time when he knew that they would respond to him. He came at a different time to call Matthew when he was assured that Matthew would surrender to his call. Similarly, he called Paul at a different time when he was vulnerable, after the resurrection, something like a hunter going after his quarry. for he who is acquainted with our inmost hearts and knows the secrets of our minds knows when each one of us is ready to respond fully. Therefore he did not call them all together at the beginning, when Matthew was still in a hardened condition. Rather, only after countless miracles, after his fame spread abroad, did he call Matthew. He knew Matthew had been softened for full responsiveness."

When the Pharisees challenged Jesus' unorthodox behavior in eating with public sinners, Jesus’ defense was quite simple. A doctor doesn’t need to visit healthy people; instead he goes to those who are sick. Jesus likewise sought out those in the greatest need. A true physician seeks healing of the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Jesus came as the divine physician and good shepherd to care for his people and to restore them to wholeness of life. The orthodox were so preoccupied with their own practice of religion that they neglected to help the very people who needed spiritual care. Their religion was selfish because they didn’t want to have anything to do with people not like themselves. Jesus stated his mission in unequivocal terms: I came  not to call the righteous, but to call sinners. Ironically the orthodox were as needy as those they despised. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

On more than one occasion Jesus quoted the saying from the prophet Hosea: For I desire mercy and not sacrifice (Hosea 6:6). Do you thank the Lord for the great mercy he has shown to you?  And do you show mercy to your neighbor as well?

"Lord Jesus, our Savior, let us now come to you: Our hearts are cold; Lord, warm them with your selfless love. Our hearts are sinful; cleanse them with your precious blood. Our hearts are weak; strengthen them with your joyous Spirit. Our hearts are empty; fill them with your divine presence. Lord Jesus, our hearts are yours; possess them always and only for yourself.” (Prayer of Augustine, 354-430)

Psalm 119:2,10,20,30,40,131

2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,
10 With my whole heart I seek thee; let me not wander from thy commandments!
20 My soul is consumed with longing for thy ordinances at all times.
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness, I set thy ordinances before me.
40 Behold, I long for thy precepts; in thy righteousness give me life!
131 With open mouth I pant, because I long for thy commandments.

On True Wisdom

"To 'Do' Works of Peace We Need to 'Be' Men of Peace"

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, SEPT. 20, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the public address Benedict XVI gave today before praying the midday Angelus with the pilgrims gathered at Castel Gandolfo.

* * *

Dear brothers and sisters!

Today, for the customary Sunday reflection, I will take as my point of departure the passage from the Letter of James that is proposed to us by today’s liturgy (3:16-4:3), and I will pause, in particular, on an expression that is striking for its beauty and contemporary relevance. It has to do with the description of true wisdom that the Apostle contrasts with false wisdom. While the latter is "worldly, material and diabolical, and is recognized by the fact that it provokes jealousies, arguments, disorder and every kind of evil deed" (cf. 3:16), on the contrary "[true] wisdom, which comes from above is first of all pure, then peaceful, meek, docile, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere" (3:17). A list of seven qualities, according to the biblical custom, from which perfection of authentic wisdom comes along with the positive effects that it produces. As first and principal quality, almost the premise for the others, St. James sets down "purity," that is, sanctity, the transparent reflection -- so to say -- of God in the human soul. And, like God, from whom it comes, wisdom does not need to impose itself by force, because it has the invincible vigor of truth and love, that affirms itself. That is why it is peaceful, meek and docile; it does not need to be partial, nor does it need to lie; it is indulgent and generous, it is recognized by the good fruits that it bears in abundance.

Why not stop every once in a while to contemplate the beauty of this wisdom? Why not draw from this unpolluted source of God’s love the wisdom of the heart, which cleanses us from the filth of lies and egoism? This holds true for everyone, but, in the first place, for those who are called to be promoters and "weavers" of peace in religious and civil communities, in social and political relations and in international relations. In our day -- perhaps also because of certain dynamics proper to mass society -- one often sees a lack of respect for truth and the word together with a widespread tendency to aggressiveness, hatred and vendettas. "The fruit of justice is sown in peace by those who make peace," St. James writes (3:18). But to "do" works of peace we need to "be" men of peace, entering the school of "the wisdom that comes from above," to assimilate its qualities and produce its effects. If everyone, in his own circle, succeeds in rejecting the lie and violence in intentions, in words and in actions, carefully cultivating sentiments of respect, understanding and esteem for others, perhaps it would not resolve every daily problem, but we could face them more serenely and effectively.

Dear friends, once more Sacred Scripture leads us to reflect on moral aspects of human existence, but starting from a reality that precedes the same morality, that is, from true wisdom. Let us ask God with confidence for wisdom of heart, through the intercession of her who welcomed Wisdom Incarnate, Jesus Christ, into her womb and gave him birth. Mary, Seat of Wisdom, pray for us!

[After the Angelus, the Holy Father said in Italian:]

From the numerous conflicts going on in the world, almost daily tragic news reaches us of both military and civilian victims. These facts that we must never get used to and that arouse a profound outcry and perplex societies that have the good of peace and civil coexistence at heart.

In these days, news of the deadly attack in Afghanistan on Italian soldiers gave me great sorrow. In prayer I share in the sufferings of relatives and the civil and military communities and, at the same time, with the same sentiments of participation, I think about the other international contingents, which have also recently had victims and that work to promote peace and the development of the institutions so necessary for human coexistence; I assure all of a remembrance before the Lord, with a special thought for the dear civilian populations, and I invite all to lift up our prayer to God. I would also like here to renew my encouragement for the promotion of solidarity among the nations to fight the logic of violence and death, favor justice, reconciliation, peace and sustain the development of peoples beginning with love and mutual understanding, as I recently wrote in my encyclical "Caritas in Veritate" (np. 72).

From next Saturday, September 26, to Monday, September 28, if it pleases God, I will undertake an apostolic visit to the Czech Republic. I will stay in Prague, the capital, but I will also travel to Brno, in Moravia, and to Stará Boleslav, the place where the nation’s principal patron, of St. Wenceslas’, was martyred. The Czech Republic is geographically and historically located in the heart of Europe, and after having passed through the dramas of the last century, she needs, like the rest of the European continent, the reasons for faith and hope. Following in the footsteps of my beloved predecessor John Paul II, who visited that country 3 times, I too will pay homage to the ancient and recent heroic witnesses to the Gospel, and I will encourage everyone to move forward in charity and in truth. I thank all those who will accompany me with prayer on this trip. May the Lord bless it and make it fruitful.

St. Matthew

Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman forces, collecting taxes from other Jews. The Romans were not scrupulous about what the "taxfarmers" got for themselves. Hence the latter, known as "publicans," were generally hated as traitors by their fellow Jews. The Pharisees lumped them with "sinners" (see Matthew 9:11-13). So it was shocking to them to hear Jesus call such a man to be one of his intimate followers.

Matthew got Jesus in further trouble by having a sort of going-away party at his house. The Gospel tells us that "many" tax collectors and "those known as sinners" came to the dinner. The Pharisees were still more badly shocked. What business did the supposedly great teacher have associating with such immoral people? Jesus' answer was, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but sinners" (Matthew 9:12b-13). Jesus is not setting aside ritual and worship; he is saying that loving others is even more important.

No other particular incidents about Matthew are found in the New Testament.

Comment:

From such an unlikely situation, Jesus chose one of the foundations of the Church, a man others, judging from his job, thought was not holy enough for the position. But he was honest enough to admit that he was one of the sinners Jesus came to call. He was open enough to recognize truth when he saw him. "And he got up and followed him" (Matthew 9:9b).

Quote:

We imagine Matthew, after the terrible events surrounding the death of Jesus, going to the mountain to which the risen Lord had summoned them. "When they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them [we think of him looking at each one in turn, Matthew listening and excited with the rest], 'All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age'" (Matthew 28:17-20).

Matthew would never forget that day. He proclaimed the Good News by his life and by his word. Our faith rests upon his witness and that of his fellow apostles.

CHAPTER I.

MARY ACCOMPANIES JESUS ON HIS JOURNEYS.

WORDS OF THE QUEEN.

My daughter, all that thou hast written in this chapter is a most important warning for all those that live in the flesh and in the imminent danger of losing eternal happiness. It should teach them to seek my most kind and powerful intercession and to fear the judgments of the Most High; for in this lies an efficacious means of salvation and of meriting higher reward for the Lord. I wish to remind thee once more, that among the secrets revealed to the beloved John at the last Supper, was also this, that he had become the beloved disciple of Christ on account of his love toward me, and that Judas fell because he despised the mercy and kindness which I had shown him. At that time, also, the evangelist understood other great mysteries communicated and wrought in me; that I should take part in the labor and suffering of the Passion and that he should have special charge of me. My dearest, the purity which I require of thee must be greater than that of an angel; and if thou strive after it thou wilt become my dearest child, as saint John, and a most beloved and favored spouse of my Son and Lord. His example and the ruin of Judas should continually serve thee as a stimulus and as a warning, to seek only after my love and to be sincerely thankful for the love shown thee without thy merit.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul

The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary

NOTEBOOK V I

February 14, 1938. During adoration, I heard these words: Pray for one of the students who has great need of My grace. And I recognized N. I prayed hard, and God’s mercy embraced that soul.

When during adoration, I repeated the prayer, “Holy God” several times, a vivid presence of God suddenly swept over me, and I was caught up in spirit before the majesty of God. I saw how the angels and the saints of the Lord give glory to God. The glory of God is so great that I dare not try to describe it, because I would not be able to do so, and souls might think that what I have written is all there is. Saint Paul, I understand now why you did not want to describe heaven, but only said that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him. Yes, that is indeed so. And all that has come forth from God returns to Him in the same way and gives Him perfect glory. Now I have seen the way in which to adore God; oh, how miserable it is! And what a tiny drop it is in comparison to that perfect heavenly glory. O my God, how good You are to accept my praise as well, and to turn Your Face to me with kindness and let us know that our prayer is pleasing to You.

Write down everything that occurs to you regarding My goodness. I answered, “what do You mean, Lord, what if I write too much?” and the Lord replied, My daughter, even if you were to speak at one and the same time in all human and angelic tongues, even then you would not have said very much, but on the contrary, you would have sung in only a small measure the praised of My Goodness – of My unfathomable mercy. O my Jesus, You yourself must put words into my mouth, that I may praise You worthily. My daughter, be at peace, do as I tell you. Your thoughts are united to My thoughts, so write whatever comes to mind. You are the secretary of My mercy. I have chosen you for that office in this life and the next life. That is how I want it to be in spite of all the opposition they will give you. Know that My choice will not change. At that moment I steeped myself in profound humility before God’s majesty. But the more I humbled myself, the more God’s presence penetrated me…

O Jesus, my only solace! How frightful is this exile! How terrible this wilderness I have to cross! My soul is struggling through a terrible thicket of all kinds of difficulties. If you yourself did not support me, Lord, there would be no thought of my moving forward.

Show the American people what an abortion is!

                     (continued)

***

I am a volunteer crisis pregnancy counselor in Hawaii, and this page made me weep. I am not catholic, but protestant. This site really opened my eyes to the fact that Christians cannot afford to be divided any longer on the issue of abortion! I had an abortion a few years ago, before being married and I know that my child is in heaven now, but the pain and regret is still very real to me. I am forgiven by God's infinite grace and now I use my experiences to counsel others. Thank you so much for proclaiming the truth in Jesus' Holy Name!!!

***

Just a short email to tell you how much I appreciate your web site. I sent it to our minister some time ago, he was so appalled at what he saw he could hardly believe his eyes! He, like so many others had never seen actual photos of aborted babies. He hopes to do a televised sermon on it someday. So far the networks won't allow it. He has had many programs shut down for trying to give such sermons. Their reasons? It would offend too many people! It is ok to show us the filth , sex and trashy language but nothing about God or abortion. Keep up the good work and let us all pray for the babies and the return of Christ to set this world in order.

***

I think your website is wonderful. Everyone that had input should be proud. The reason I was searching for a site like this was for a research project on abortion that I have to present tomorrow. No matter how many pictures I see of partial birth abortions or any other one for that matter, I will never not feel sick to my stomach. God's blessings on you.

***

I had an abortion in 1990. The child was only 8 weeks old. My story isn't really important, but your website is. We can't go back and change our past - but we can ask forgiveness for it, and the choices we've made. We can also help to change the future. I believe that you're website can help. I have an opportunity weekly to meet with teenage girls from various walks of life. I am going to recommend that they (after getting parental permission) visit your website. I appreciate the factual way you present your information - and although they are disturbing - I appreciate the photography as well. I truly had no idea, and even though 13 years have passed, the pain is still very present.

More Comments from our Visitors Regarding the Graphic photos of Abortion on our Website

I'm 8 weeks pregnant, and turned 18, just 9 weeks ago. I'm a christian but my faith was tested. The thought of abortion came into my mind. No one had to be disappointed in me for pre-marital sex. But i stopped and remembered the movie my mom showed me when i was younger..The silent scream and i wanted to hit myself for even having the thought. The babys father wants nothing to do with it and will not speak to me cuz i am deciding to keep so there for im ruining his life. If any young girls are coming to this website, i hope they understand that this isnt an answer. after seeing those pictures and procedures know that you don't have to give this child a murdered end. but give it life with a family who would die for a baby. and they can give it everything you would want and then some for that child. please don't murder your mistakes, but count it as a blessing . you are its mother. look at your mother and ask if she would have the heart to murder you because you are inconvenient at the time. this is a great website.

HI..I am a 15 year old expectant mother...(Not to be proud of my sin)...But 2 weeks ago my mother found out that I was pregnant. Before I told her about my pregnancy, I visited abortion sites to see how the procedure works. After viewing the picks and getting a better understanding I was AGAINST IT! to the fullest.....So, the day she found out I was pregnant she told me," I could not take care of a child nor’ could I like in her home with a child"..So I had no other choice.....So that morning I got on my knees and I prayed to God," Have mercy on my unborn child soul, and to shed his blood over the clinic that I was about to go to.. So, at about 8:15 a.m that morning, we walked into the clinic.. There was only one protester outside of the clinic and she prayed over us as we walked in. I broke into tears and all I could think about were the photos on this site. So we walked in and she signed all of the forms that were to be signed and I gave them no struggle as they got me into my room. As I walked to my assigned room I could feel Jesus walking with me, and I could feel a strong feeling over my heart.. And, I could feel the pain of all the babies who had been aborted in the clinic, I could feel pain as I looked at all of the long needles and equiptment.........We got into the room and one of the nurses took a sonogram of my baby..and as I layed there frightened to death she said," maim,. she's 26 weeks and in the state of Mississippi 26 weeks is too far for us to abort the baby"......She gave my mother a list of three other close states to have it done, but God came through and my mother said NO........ I want this story to be remembered because it meant so much to me...I want all of you who has designed this site to know, GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU!!.....a lot of people never take out the time to see that these babies are LIVES!!!I pray for you all everyday that I wake..And I want you to know that I admire people like you who let people see the truth in behind these murders. GOD LOVES YOU AND JUST KNOW.."IF GOD IS WITH US WHO CAN BE AGAINST US"..........I LOVE YOU ALL....BLESS YOU!:)

Seeing those pictures brought tears to my eyes, i never thought abortion was a big deal, i myself had had an abortion and after doing research and veiwing what i seen on your web site, i feel regret and if i could stop other woman from having abortions i would. I think if some of them women could see what happens to those unborn children, they would defenitly thin twice about what they will do. I was recently on the birth control patch and still ended up pregnant and i am now 5 weeks along and i could not imagine hurting this baby. I hope that many woman will visit your web site or others and see what happens to their babies and i sure hope it will change there thoughts. It is the sadest thing i have ever seen. But it did open my eyes. Thank you.

***

I viewed some of the pictures of these aborted blessings from Heaven I could only see a few because it makes me weep from my soul to see such horrifying things being done to innocent little children from God. If people were treated like they treated others, society might be somewhat more compassionate than they are today!!! adults wouldn’t stand by and put up with their arms, legs and heads pulled off...............God have mercy on us all! God bless you for all that you do, a fellow believer in our Lord Jesus.

I’m 36 years old and I live in New York City. I was introduced to your website after hearing an interview with Kerri Caviezel on the EWTN Network (Global Catholic Network). Personally, I’ve never had an abortion. I know people who have, some are family members. I’ve always been indifferent towards abortion because I really never knew what it entailed. After browsing through the website and taking a look at some of the graphics, I can truly say that I am so Pro Life. As I clicked from picture to picture, I was devastated to know that these babies actually have little eyes, hands, feet, etc. When I was younger, I was always told that babies are not formed when they are aborted. Well, your pictures sure proved them wrong. I am so horrified and saddened that this is a form of birth control for many women. I wish that they could see what I’ve seen. The pictures posted on the website are so essential in getting the message out that this horrible act needs to stop and that there are other options. I want to thank you for this website. I will definitely pass the word. God Bless You All!

                           (to be continued)

From the inception of his pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is so horrific that words alone can never convey its meaning.

Fr. Frank serves on the board of the Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn from other social reform movements is being prepared.

We present here some of the grim reality of abortion. Only seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to this injustice.

These images are arranged according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist, Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted children.

It is especially critical to show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that the myth persists that they are not really children at all.

We thank all of you who have contacted us to tell us about how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others this horrible reality.

God, have mercy. Amen.·
