DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Monday (9/7): "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to
do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"
Scripture: Luke 6:6-11
6 On another Sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man
was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the
Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so
that they might find an accusation against him. 8 But he knew their
thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and
stand here." And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, "I
ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save
life or to destroy it?" 10 And he looked around on them all, and said to
him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored.
11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what
they might do to Jesus.
Meditation: What is God's intention for the commandment,
keep holy the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8; Deut. 5:12)? The scribes and
Pharisees wanted to catch Jesus in the act of breaking the Sabbath
ritual so they might accuse him of breaking God's law. In a few
penetrating words Luke records that Jesus knew their thoughts.
They were filled with fury and contempt for Jesus because they put their
own thoughts of right and wrong above God. They were ensnared in their
own legalism because they did not understand or see the purpose of God.
Jesus shows their fallacy by pointing to God's intention for the
Sabbath: to do good and to save life rather than to do evil or
to destroy life.
What is the significance of Jesus' healing the man with the withered
hand? Ambrose, the 4th century bishop of Milan who was instrumental in
bringing Augustine of Hippo to the Christian faith, comments on this
miracle: "Then you heard the words of the Lord, saying, “Stretch forth
your hand.” That is the common and universal remedy. You who think that
you have a healthy hand beware lest it is withered by greed or by
sacrilege. Hold it out often. Hold it out to the poor person who begs
you. Hold it out to help your neighbor, to give protection to a widow,
to snatch from harm one whom you see subjected to unjust insult. Hold it
out to God for your sins. The hand is stretched forth; then it is
healed. Jeroboam’s hand withered when he sacrificed to idols; then it
stretched out when he entreated God."
Why do Christians celebrate Sunday as the Lord's Day? Most
importantly, we celebrate it to commemorate God's work of redemption in
Jesus Christ and the new work of creation accomplished through Christ's
death and resurrection (2 Corinthians 5:17). God's action is a model for
us. If God "rested and was refreshed" on the seventh day, we, too, ought
to "rest" and let others, especially the poor, "be refreshed" (see
Exodus 31:17; 23:12). Taking "our sabbath rest" is a way of expressing
honor to God for all that he has done for us. Such "rest" however does
not exempt us from our love for our neighbor. If we truly love the Lord
above all else, then the love of God will overflow to love of neighbor
as well. Saint Augustine of Hippo said: "The charity of truth seeks holy
leisure; the necessity of charity accepts just work." How can we make
Sunday a day holy to the Lord? First, by refraining from unnecessary
work and from activities that hinder the worship we owe to God. We can
also perform works of mercy, such as humble service of the sick, the
infirm, and the elderly. And we ought to seek appropriate relaxation of
mind and body as well. The joy of the Lord's Day is a great gift to
refresh and strengthen us in our love of God and of neighbor (Nehemiah
8:10). Do you know the joy of the Lord and do you find rest and
refreshment in celebrating the Lord's Day?
"Lord Jesus, in your victory over sin and death on the cross and in
your resurrection you give us the assurance of sharing in the eternal
rest of heaven. Transform my heart with your love that I may freely
serve my neighbor for his good and find joy and refreshment in the
celebration of Sunday as the Lord's Day."
Psalm 62:6-9
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be
shaken.
7 On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is
God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. [Selah]

breath.

On Viterbo, the "City of Popes"
"Confirm Your Brothers"
VITERBO, Italy, SEPT. 6, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the public address Benedict XVI gave today before praying the midday Angelus in Viterbo, where he spent the day in a pastoral visit.
* * *
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
At the end of this solemn Eucharistic Celebration, I once again thank the Lord for having giving me the joy to pay this pastoral visit to your diocesan community. I have come among you to encourage you and confirm you in fidelity to Christ, as the theme that you have chosen indicates: "Confirm your brothers" (Luke 22:31). These words of Jesus were directed to the Apostle Peter during the Last Supper, entrusting to him the task of being the pastor of his entire Church here on earth.
For many centuries your diocese has distinguished itself by a singular bond of affection and communion with the Successor of Peter. I was able to experience this visiting the Palazzo dei Papi (Palace of Popes) and, in particular, the hall of the "Conclave." St. Leo the Great, who performed a great service to truth in charity through an assiduous exercise of the word, as his sermons and letters bear witness, was born in the vast territory of ancient Tuscia. Pope Sabinian, successor of Gregory the Great, was born in Blera; Paul III was born in Canino. Viterbo was chosen for the whole second half of the 12th century as the residence of the Roman Pontiffs: Five of my predecessors were elected here, and four of them are interred here; more than 50 have visited -- the last was the Servant of God John Paul II, 25 years ago. These figures have a historical significance, but I would like to stress their spiritual value above all at this moment. Viterbo has been justly named "City of Popes," and for you this constitutes a further stimulus to live and witness to the Christian faith, the same faith that the holy martyrs Valentino and Ilario -- who rest in the cathedral -- gave their lives for. They are the first of a long line of saints, martyrs and blesseds from your land.
"Confirm your brothers:" Today I felt this invitation of the Lord addressed to me with a singular intensity. Pray, dear Brothers and Sisters, that I might be able to carry out the mission of the pastors of the entire flock of Christ with ever greater fidelity and love (cf. John 21:15 ff.). For my part I assure you of a constant remembrance in the Lord for your diocesan community, so that its different articulations -- whose symbolic representation I was able to admire in the cathedral's new bronze doors -- will tend more and more to a complete unity and fraternal communion, indispensable conditions for offering the world an efficacious evangelical testimony. I will entrust these intentions this afternoon to the Virgin Mary in my visit to the shrine of the Madonna della Quercia (the Madonna of the Oak). Now, with the prayer that recalls her "yes" to the angel's announcement, let us ask her always to keep our faith strong and joyful.
[After the Angelus, the Holy Father said in Italian:]
I would now like to address a cordial greeting to the participants in the International Congress "Men and Religions," which is convening in Krakow on the theme: "Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue." Numerous figures and representatives of the various religions -- invited by the Archdiocese of Krakow and the Community of Sant'Egidio -- are gathered to reflect and pray for peace, 70 years after the outbreak of World War II. We cannot fail to recall the dramatic events that brought on one of the most terrible conflicts in history, that caused tens of millions of deaths and provoked so much suffering among the beloved Polish people; a conflict that saw the tragedy of the Holocaust and the extermination of many other innocent people. May the memory of these events move us to pray for the victims and for those who still carry wounds in their bodies and hearts; may it also be an admonishment to all not to repeat such barbarities and to intensify the efforts to create in our time, marked by conflicts and oppositions, an enduring peace, transmitting above all to the new generations, a culture and a lifestyle shaped by love, solidarity and esteem for the other. In this perspective, what is especially important is the contributions that religions can and must make in promoting forgiveness and reconciliation against violence, racism, totalitarianism and the extremism that disfigure the image of the Creator in man, erase God from the horizon and, consequently, lead to the scorn of man himself. May the Lord help you to build peace beginning from love and from mutual understanding (cf. "Caritas in Veritate," no. 72).

WORDS OF THE QUEEN.
My daughter, I wish that thou ponder and penetrate
more and more this mystery of which thou hast written, so fixing
it in thy soul, that thou wilt be drawn to imitate my example at least
in some part of it. Consider then, that in the vision of the Divinity
which I had on this occasion, I was made to comprehend the high
value which the Lord sets upon the labors, the Passion and Death of my
Son, and upon all those who were to imitate and follow Jesus in the way
of the Cross. Knowing this, I not only offered to deliver my Son over to
Passion and Death, but I asked Him to make me his companion and partaker
of all his sorrows, sufferings and torments, which request the eternal
Father granted. Then, in order to begin following in the footsteps of
his bitterness, I besought my Son and Lord to deprive me of interior
delights; and this petition was inspired in me by the Lord himself,
because He wished it so, and because my own love taught me and urged me
thereto. This desire for suffering and the wishes of my divine Son led
me on in the way of suffering. He himself because He loved me so
tenderly, granted me my desires; for those whom He loves, He chastises
and afflicts (Prov. 3, 12). I as his Mother was not to be
deprived of this blessed distinction of being entirely like unto Him,
which alone makes this life most estimable. Immediately this will the
Most High, this my earnest petition, began to be fulfilled: I began to
feel the want of his delightful caresses and He began to treat me with
greater reserve. That was one of the reasons, why He did not call me
Mother, but Woman, at the marriage-feast at Cana and at the foot of the
Cross (John 2, 4, 19, 26); and also on other occasions, when He
abstained from words of tenderness. So far was this from being a sign of
a diminution of his love, that it was rather an exquisite refinement of
his affection to assimilate me to Him in the sufferings which He chose
Himself as his precious treasure and inheritance.
Hence thou wilt understand the ignorance and error of
mortals, and how far they drift from the way of light, when, as a rule,
nearly all of them strive to avoid labor and suffering and are
frightened by the royal and secure road of mortification and the Cross.
Full of this deceitful ignorance, they do not only abhor resemblance to
Christ's suffering and my own, and deprive themselves of the true and
highest blessing of this life but they make their recovery impossible,
since all of them are weak and afflicted by many sins, for which the
only remedy is suffering. Sin is committed by base indulgence and is
repugnant to suffering sorrow, while tribulation earns pardon of the
just judge. By the bitterness of sorrow and affliction the vapors of sin
are allayed; the excesses of the concupiscible and irascible passions
are crushed; pride and haughtiness are humiliated; the flesh is subdued
the inclination to evil, to the sensible and earthly creatures is
repressed; the judgment is cleared; the will is brought within bounds
and its desultory movements at the call of the passions, are corrected;
and, above all, divine love and pity are drawn down upon the afflicted,
who embrace suffering with patience, or who seek it to imitate my most
holy Son. In this science of suffering are renewed all the blessed
riches of the creatures; those that fly from them are insane, those that
know nothing of this science are foolish.

DIVINE MERCY
|
Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
NOTEBOOK V
Today before Holy
Communion, the Lord said to me, My daughter,
today talk openly to the Superior (Mother Irene) about My mercy because, of
all the superiors, she has taken the greatest part in proclaiming My mercy.
And in fact, Mother Superior came this
afternoon, and we talked about this Work of God. Mother told me that the
images had not come out too well and were not selling very well. "But," she
said "I have taken a good quantity myself and am distributing them wherever
I can and do the best I can to spread the Work of Mercy". When she had gone
the Lord gave me to know how pleasing this soul was to Him.
Today the Lord said to me, I have opened my Heart
as a living fountain of mercy. Let all souls draw life from it. Let them
approach this sea of mercy with great trust. Sinners will attain
justification, and the just will be confirmed in good. Whoever places his
trust in My mercy will be filled with divine peace at the hour of death.
The Lord said to me,
My daughter, do not tire of proclaiming My mercy. In this way you you will
refresh this Heart of Mine, which burns with a flame of pity for sinners.
Tell My priests that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words
when they speak about My unfathomable mercy, about the compassion I have for
them in My Heart. To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give
wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to
whom they will speak.
Community life is difficult in itself, but it
is doubly difficult to get along with proud souls. "O God, give me a deeper
faith that I may always see in every sister Your holy image which has been
engraved in her soul...
Everlasting love, pure flame, burn in my heart ceaselessly and deify my
whole being, according to Your infinite pleasure by which You summoned me
into existence and called me to take part in Your everlasting happiness. O
merciful Lord, it is only out of mercy that You have lavished these gifts
upon me. Seeing all these free gifts within me, with deep humility I worship
Your incomprehensible goodness. Lord, my heart is filled with amazement that
You, absolute Lord, in need of no one, would nevertheless stoop so low out
of pure love for us. I can never help being amazed that the Lord would have
such an intimate relationship with His creatures. That again is His
unfathomable goodness. Every time I begin this meditation, I never finish
it, because my spirit becomes entirely drowned in Him. What a delight it is
to love with all the force of one's soul and to be loved even more in
return, to feel and experience this with the full consciousness of one's
being. There are no words to express this.

Show
the American people what an abortion is!
(continued)
·
·
·
Father Pavone,
I am so glad that Priests for Life will publish first trimester aborted
babies on its website. Maybe it will shock enough people into realizing
that these tiny beings are indeed human, and babies! On reading your
column, I thought of the good, brave people of the Center for
Bio-Ethical Reform who run the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP). They,
too, are making everyone aware that all unborn children have the right
to live by displaying huge photos of aborted first trimester babies on
the side of their travelling truck/van. I honor and admire these
courageous people and the work they do, especially when they are
challenged by hostile students on college campuses.
·
I saw the 8 wk
fetus pictures, they are great.
·
God Bless you
in all your efforts for Pro Life. I just viewed the latest pictures of
abortions in the first trimester-they were very traumatic to see even
for me, a nurse. Hopefully anyone who takes the time to view them will
realize the devastation caused to both mother and baby. You are in my
daily prayers.
·
We are proud
there is a web like this and hope the people who NEED to see this -
will! GOD bless you all and keep up the good work.
·
This website is
touching and scary all at the same time. I feel that if the people who
are thinking about having an abortion could see this site before they
decide to do it, their would be a lot of children still alive.
·
Hello, and God
bless you. My son and I just today visited your site for the first time.
The pictures of the baby through the various stages development are
excellent.

Regarding the Graphic photos of Abortion on our Website
·
The images on
your site upset me so much. It is hard for me to comprehend this. I used
to believe in abortion and I don’t anymore. I am so glad I don’t. Those
pictures will stick with me forever. I wish every woman that thinks
abortion is the answer could see these.
·
Though it was
very heartbreaking to see these photos of aborted fetuses, I have to
applaud you for your work. It is sites like this that are needed to show
people the brutal reality of aborting fetuses. Thank you.
·
I am 20 years
old and am in college. For a research project, we had to pick a topic
that meant a lot to us and then find out more information on it. I
picked Catholics against abortion, but that was a very broad subject. So
by accident, I stumbled across the web page for Priests for Life. I read
some articles you wrote about wanting to show the world what an abortion
is. When I saw these pictures, I was overwhelmed with emotions. I was
upset, angry, disgusted, and at the same time glad because there are
people like you. I think it is very important that we as Christians
should help put an end to this crime against God. I still see the images
of the babies in my head. I was always Pro-Life but I never wanted to
think about it. Now I am forced to. Thank you so much for doing what you
do. You are truly an inspiration to me. I now do everything I can to
stop abortions. I even stood in a three hour Life Chain in the beginning
of October holding signs to promote Pro-Life. I even talked a friend out
of an abortion, even though she wanted nothing to do with the child. She
ended up having a miscarriage in her fourth month and was very upset. It
is very important to get the Pro-Choice Catholics to turn around. Maybe
then will we finally put an end to all abortions across the world. God
bless you and all involved with your project.
·
I came across
your web site through a link from The Catholic Faith web site. While
some may find the abortion images offensive, I have to thank you for
posting them. Allow me to explain.
·
I am a
life-long Catholic and I had an abortion at the age of 18. I am now 36
years old. Several years after my abortion, I finally went to confession
to confess my horrible sin and was forgiven. I truly believe I made the
wrong choice, but have made no effort to influence the minds of others
who are pro-choice. After seeing the pictures of what could have been my
aborted child does it really become real to me. Tears are streaming down
my face as I look at them. You are correct. There are no words to
express what is shown in those images. Those are babies! How selfish we
are as humans to have such little regard for human life.
·
From this day
forward, I will never condone an abortion, regardless of the reason. The
next web site a search for will be a pro-life organization where I can
get involved. Those pictures have changed my life. I hope to never have
to see them ever again.
·
God bless you
all for what you all do. I am not married neither do I have any kids. I
will love for God to bless me one day. Continue to let your light shine
for Jesus because he is so worthy to be praised! Those pictures really
made my heart sad abortions grieves the Holy Spirit. God's compassion
for us we cant even comprehend. I am believing that God will convict the
hearts of those that want to have abortions. Thank you and God bless
·
Id just like to
say how informative and good your site is. Up until now I've been
indecisive on the subject of abortion, unable to decide if a foetus
could be considered a person, a living thing. After seeing these images
I can see that they are living and that they are living people with
little souls and I am now against this horrific procedure.
·
I am very
impressed with your site. I am a college student at NDSU and wish that
somehow, all could have a chance to see the horror of abortion. I am a
member of Collegians for Life, and could use any advice on spreading a
pro-life message on campus that could reach the whole student body, and
not just those who already share our view.
·
Hi. I am a
devout Catholic and mother of 3 young girls, all under 6 years. I too
think it is a good thing that you have pictures of those poor dear
aborted babies on your site. I personally have never had an abortion, I
have always thought it is a terrible thing to do......Like I said
before, I have always been against abortion, but until January of this
year I never really spoke out against it. You see, these kind of
pictures you have on your site are exactly what sparked the pro-life
spirit in me.
My Church had asked in our bulletin for parishioners to come to pray the
Rosary for an end to abortion and afterwards had a candle light vigil at
the big white abortion cross out front of our Church. I attended both,
and then they said we could stay to see the film, "Silent Scream" at the
Church Hall. I and a few other brave souls (all 10 or 15 of us who
stayed were all a little apprehensive at seeing dead aborted babies for
the first time) decided to stay for the film viewing. I can honestly say
I was absolutely disgusted, mortified and extremely saddened beyond
words at what the film showed. I couldn't help but cry, there was no
holding back the tears, what happened to those poor innocent babes was
beyond description. ...
It was then that I got mad and decided I would step up to the plate and
do my part to stop abortion. Seeing those pictures was what I needed to
open my eyes to the desperate plight of those poor innocent little sweet
babes ….
If those pictures can light a forest fire in my heart and soul like
that, I am sure they will have that effect on other lukewarm men and
women who call themselves "pro-life" but sit back and do nothing against
the terrible atrocities of abortion, as I had done before.
After the film at the Church Hall, the ladies who led the evening asked
us to take copies of the "2001 Revised list of Corporations funding
abortion" from the St. Antoninus Institute for Catholic Education in
Business, which they had plenty of copies of on a table for us to take.
I was so enraged with abortion after seeing those poor dead babies’
pictures that I vowed that I would never again knowingly give a red cent
to any organization or person who has, any ties financially or otherwise
to the abortion industry. I made many copies of that list and I carry it
wherever I go and distribute copies to people who want them. I don’t buy
alot of products I used to because they are on "the list", I have to
improvise and get products that are not as good, but that sometimes cost
more, and I don’t patronize many of the stores I used to because they
are on "the list", I do pay more for things and go out of my way to get
things, it has changed my life, but my being a little inconvenienced in
the pocket book and in my time is small change when you consider what
those poor little babies go through at the hands of the abortionists.
So, what I have to say is this: Keep up the good work and don’t stop
showing those heart and gut wrenching pictures! You are so right when
you say, "America will not end abortion until America SEES abortion."
(to
be continued)
From the inception of his
pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show
the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is
so horrific that
words alone can never convey its meaning.
Fr. Frank serves on the board
of the
Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share
with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual
abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a
series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn
from other social reform movements is being prepared.
We present here some of the
grim reality of abortion. Only
seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to
sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to
this injustice.
These images are arranged
according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You
will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document
signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that
particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist,
Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted
children.
It is especially critical to
show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is
in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that
the myth persists that they are not really children at all.
We thank all of you who have
contacted us to tell us about
how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others
this horrible reality.
God, have mercy. Amen.·
