Scripture: Luke 1:5-25

5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechari'ah, of the division of Abi'jah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechari'ah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechari'ah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli'jah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." 18 And Zechari'ah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." 21 And the people were waiting for Zechari'ah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb. 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, 25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."

Old Testament Reading: Judges 13:2-7,24-25

2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Mano'ah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, "Behold, you are barren and have no children; but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Therefore beware, and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, 5 for lo, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from birth; and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines." 6 Then the woman came and told her husband, "A man of God came to me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; I did not ask him whence he was, and he did not tell me his name; 7 but he said to me, `Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; so then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from birth to the day of his death.'" 24 And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson; and the boy grew, and the LORD blessed him. 25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him in Ma'haneh-dan, between Zorah and Esh'ta-ol.

Meditation: Do you believe that God will fulfill all his promises just as he said? Advent is a time to renew our hope and confidence in God’s faithfulness to the covenant he made with his people. In preparing the way for a Savior, we see the wondrous miracle of two barren couples who conceive and bear sons – Samson in the Old Testament (Judges 13) and John the Baptist in the New Testament (Luke 1:5ff) – who are called by God to bring hope and deliverance at a time of spiritual darkness and difficulty for the people of God.

 Zechariah was a godly man who was tuned to God’s voice. He was born into a priestly family and it was his privilege to be chosen to enter the inner court of the temple to offer sacrifice to God.  Luke records that the people wondered at Zechariah’s delay and were amazed that he was speechless when he withdrew from the inner sanctuary. They rightly perceived that he had a special encounter with God. God’s angelic messenger greeted Zechariah with a blessing beyond his expectations.  “Your prayer is heard! You will have a son! And his mission will be great for all of Israel. ” Now that seemed like a lot for Zechariah to take in all at once. Could God really do a miracle for his barren wife, Elizabeth?  The angel somewhat wisely put Zechariah in his place before God’s mighty action.  He became speechless until the day the infant was dedicated to the Lord and given the name, John. When God draws us into his presence, he wants us to be still and quiet before him so we can listen to his voice as he speaks to our hearts and reveals his mind to us.  Do you listen attentively to the Lord and do you ponder his word in your heart with trust and confidence?

 In the annunciation of the birth of John the Baptist, the angel explains to Zechariah the role his son is to play in preparing the way for the Messiah. John will be great in the sight of God. He will live as a Nazarite (see Numbers 6) – a person set apart for the Lord. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even within his mother's womb. And he shall be sent to the people of God, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers and children to God and one another, by turning the "disobedient to the wisdom of the just." The name John means "the Lord is gracious". When God acts to save us he graciously fills us with his Holy Spirit and makes our faith "alive" to his promises. Do you pray that "the hearts of parents and children may be turned to God and one another"?

"Lord Jesus, you bring hope and restoration to your people. Restore and strengthen Christian family life today. Help me to love and serve my family. May your love rule in all my relationships and remove any barriers to peace and harmony."

Holy See to UN Climate Change Conference


"The Way Humanity Treats the Environment Influences the Way It Treats Itself"
 
COPENHAGEN, Denmark, DEC. 18, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Here is the statement Archbishop Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, delivered Thursday to the U.N. conference on climate change, currently under way in Copenhagen. Archbishop Migliore is head of the Holy See delegation to the meeting.

Mr President,

This conference reiterates how long it takes to create the clear and firm political will necessary to adopt common binding measures and adequate budgets for an effective mitigation and adaptation to ongoing climate change.

Is this political will slow in taking shape due to the complexity of the interlinking issues that we must tackle? Is it mainly a problem of conflicting national interests? Or is it the difficulty in translating into numbers the by-now acquired principle of common and differentiated responsibility? Or is it still the predominance of energy policies over care of the environment? Undoubtedly, there is a little of all of this.

However, it should be noted how the many considerations that are being developed during this process converge on a central aspect: the necessity of a new and deeper reflection on the meaning of the economy and its purposes, and a profound and far-reaching revision of the model for development, to correct the malfunctions and distortions. This, in fact, is required by the good ecological health of the planet and especially as an urgent response to the cultural and moral crisis of man, whose symptoms have long been evident all over the world.

With realism, trust and hope we must assume the new responsibilities which call us to the scene of a world in need of a deep cultural renewal and a rediscovery of fundamental values on which to build a better future. The moral crises that humanity is currently experiencing, be they economic, nutritional, environmental, or social -- all deeply interlinked -- oblige us to redesign our way, to establish new guidelines and to find new forms of engagement. These crises become thus the occasion for discernment and new thinking.

Obviously, this obligation requires the collection of detailed and accurate scientific analysis to help avoid the anxieties and fears of many and the cynicism and indifference on the part of others. It also requires the responsible involvement of all segments of human society to search for and discover an adequate response to the tangible reality of climate change. If the diagnosis -- by force of circumstances in the hands of science, information and politics -- finds it difficult to provide clarity and to motivate the concerted and timely action of those responsible for human society, reason and the innate sense of shared responsibility of the people once again must prevail.

Civil society and local authorities did not wait for the expected political and legally binding conclusions of our meetings, which take such an incredibly long time. Instead, individuals, groups, local authorities and communities have already begun an impressive series of initiatives to give form to the two cornerstones of the response to climate change: adaptation and mitigation. While technical solutions are necessary, they are not sufficient. The wisest and most effective programs focus on information, education, and the formation of the sense of responsibility in children and adults towards environmentally sound patterns of development and stewardship of creation.

These initiatives have already started to build up a mosaic of experiences and achievements marked by a widespread ecological conversion. These new attitudes and behaviors have the potential to create the necessary intra-generational and inter-generational solidarity and dispel any sterile sense of fear, apocalyptic terror, overbearing control and hostility towards humanity that are multiplied in media accounts and other reports.

Mr President,

The Holy See, in the albeit small state of Vatican City, also is making significant efforts to take a lead in environmental protection by promoting and implementing energy diversification projects targeted at the development of renewable energy, with the objective of reducing emissions of CO2 and its consumption of fossil fuels.

In addition, the Holy See is giving substance to the necessity to disseminate an education in environmental responsibility, which also seeks to safeguard the moral conditions for an authentic human ecology. Many Catholic educational institutions are engaged in promoting such a model of education, both in schools and in universities. Moreover, Episcopal Conferences, Dioceses, parishes and faith-based NGOs have been devoted to advocacy and management of ecological programs for a number of years.

These efforts are about working on lifestyles, as the current dominant models of consumption and production are often unsustainable from the point of view of social, environmental, economic and even moral analysis. We must safeguard creation -- soil, water and air -- as a gift entrusted to everyone, but we must also and above all prevent mankind from destroying itself. The degradation of nature is directly connected to the culture that shapes human coexistence: when the human ecology is respected within society, the environmental ecology will benefit. The way humanity treats the environment influences the way it treats itself.

In his recent encyclical "Caritas in Veritate" and World Day of Peace Message 2010 Pope Benedict XVI addressed to all those involved in the environmental sector an inescapable question: how can we hope that future generations respect the natural environment when our educational systems and laws do not help them to respect themselves?

Mr President,

Environment and climate change entail a shared responsibility toward all humanity, especially the poor and future generations.

There is an inseparable link between the protection of creation, education and an ethical approach to the economy and development. The Holy See hopes that the process in question can ever more appreciate this link and, with this outlook, continues to give its full cooperation.

Blessed Pope Urban V

(1310-1370)
 

In 1362, the man elected pope declined the office. When the cardinals could not find another person among them for that important office, they turned to a relative stranger: the holy person we honor today.

The new Pope Urban V proved a wise choice. A Benedictine monk and canon lawyer, he was deeply spiritual and brilliant. He lived simply and modestly, which did not always earn him friends among clergymen who had become used to comfort and privilege. Still, he pressed for reform and saw to the restoration of churches and monasteries. Except for a brief period he spent most of his eight years as pope living away from Rome at Avignon, seat of the papacy from 1309 until shortly after his death.

He came close but was not able to achieve one of his biggest goals—reuniting the Eastern and Western churches.

As pope, Urban continued to follow the Benedictine Rule. Shortly before his death in 1370 he asked to be moved from the papal palace to the nearby home of his brother so he could say goodbye to the ordinary people he had so often helped.

615. O most foolish and cruel blindness! O incon
ceivable rashness! The unjust condemnation of the Just
and the blood of the Innocent, whom the judge himself
is forced to proclaim guiltless, you wish to take upon
yourselves and upon your children, in order that his blood
may call out against you to the end of the world! O
perfidious and sacrilegious Jews ! So lightly then weighs
the blood of the Lamb, who bears the sins of the world,
and the life of a Man, who is at the same time God!
How is it possible you wish to load with it yourselves
and your children? If He had been only your brother,
your benefactor and master, your audacity would have
been tremendous and your malice execrable. Justly in
deed do you merit the punishment which you meet; and
that the burden, which you have put upon yourselves
and your children, allows you no rest or relief in all
the world: it is just that this burden should rest upon
you heavier than heaven and earth. But, alas ! Though
this divine Blood was intended to wash and cleanse all
the children of Adam, and though it was in effect poured
out upon all the children of the holy Church, yet there
are many belonging to it who make themselves guilty of
this blood by their works in the same manner as the
Jews charged themselves with it, both by word and deed.
They did not know or believe that it was the blood of
the Savior, while Catholics both know and confess that
it is their Redeemer s.

616. The sins and depraved lives of the Christians
proclaim louder than tongues their abuse of the blood
of Christ and their consent to the guilt in his death
which they load upon themselves. Let Christ be
affronted, spit upon, buffeted, stretched upon a cross,
despised, let Him yield to Barabbas and die ; let Him be
tormented, scourged and crowned with thorns for our
sins: let his blood interest us no more than that it flow
copiously and be imputed to us for all eternity: let the
incarnate God suffer and die; if only we are left free
to enjoy the apparent goods of this world, to seize the
pleasing hour, to use creatures for our comfort, to be
crowned with roses, live in joy; let our power be unrefrained,
let no one seek preference before us ; be we per
mitted to despise humility, abhor poverty, hoard up riches,
engage in all deceits, forgive no injuries, entertain the
delights of carnal pleasures, let our eyes see nothing that
they shall not covet. Such be our rule in life without re
gard for aught else. And if by all this we crucify Christ,
let his blood come upon us and upon our children.

617. Ask the damned in hell, whether these were not
the sentiments expressed in their works as described by
Solomon, and whether it was not because they spoke thus
foolishly in their hearts, that they were called impious,
and were so in reality. What else except damnation can
they expect, who abuse the blood of Christ and waste it
upon themselves, not as such who are seeking a remedy ?
Where do we find, among the children of the Church,
any one that would willingly permit a thief and male
factor to be preferred to him? So little is this doctrine
of humility practiced, that one excites surprise if he al
lows another just as good and honorable as himself, or
even more honorable, to take precedence. Though it is
certain that no one can be found as good as Christ or as
bad as Barabbas, yet there are innumerable men who,
in spite of this example, are offended and judge them
selves disgraced, if they are not preferred and exalted
by honors, riches and dignities, and in whatever pertains
to the ostentation and applause of the world. These are
sought after, contended for and solicited ; in such things
are consumed the thoughts and all the exertions and
powers of men, almost from the time in which they can
use their faculties until they lose them. The most la
mentable misfortune is, that even those who, by their
profession and their state, have renounced and turned
their backs upon such things, do not free themselves.
While the Savior has commanded them to forget their
people and the house of their parents (Ps. 44, 11), they
devote to them the best part of their human existence, by
giving them their attention and solicitude in the direction
of their affairs, their best wishes and care in the augmen
tation of their worldly goods. It seems but a small
matter to them to engage themselves in these vanities.
Instead of forgetting the house of their father they forget
the house of their God in which they live, and where they
are divinely assisted to gain a salvation, an honor and
esteem never possible in the world, and where they re
ceive their sustenance without any anxiety or worry.
They show themselves ungrateful for all these benefits
by drifting away from the humility due to their state.
Thus the humility of Christ our Savior, his patience, his
injuries, the dishonor of the cross, the imitation of
Christ s works, the following of his doctrines ; all is left
to the poor, to the lonely ones, to the weak and humble
of this world; while the ways of Sion are deserted and
full of wailing, because there are so few who will come
to the solemn feast of the imitation of Christ our Lord
(Thren. 1, 4).

Even though a soul may immediately distinguish between false inspirations and those of God, it should nevertheless be careful, because many things are uncertain. God is pleased and rejoices when a soul distrusts Him for His own sake; because it loves Him, it is prudent and itself asks and searches for help to make certain that it is really God who is acting within it. And once a well-instructed confessor has confirmed this, the soul should be at peace and give itself up to God, according to His directions; that is, according to the directions of the confessor. 6. I will remain faithful to my mission in the Church and for the Church as a witness of Jesus Christ

In his testament, Jesus left me his Church but at the same time he entrusted me with a mission. "Be my witness unto the ends of the earth." (Act 1:8). I cannot be faithful to the testament of Jesus unless I carry out my mission within the Church and for the Church: "Love the Church. Obey the Church. Be loyal to the Church. Pray for the Church. There are various kinds of Catholics, the Catholic who makes use of the Church, the Catholic in name only; there is the opportunist and the honorary Catholic looking for status. But Our Lord accepts only those who are hundred percent Catholic, those who accept him unconditionally. "They left all and followed him" (Lk 5:11).

I was accused of being involved in the conspiracy between the Vatican and the Imperialist against the Communists merely because Pope Paul VI had transferred me to Saigon one week before the arrival of the Communist troops. I was imprisoned without trial, without sentence.

I repeated often, as did Paul VI, "For the Church, for the Church".

How can I be a witness of Christ? One day I told a Communist cadre who was criticizing the Church: "We have two diferent meanings for the same words. If you sincerely wish to understand the Church, to dialogue with Catholics, I propose to write an index of religiuos vocabulary in Latin, French, English, Italian, Spanish and Chinese with Vietnamese definitions. If you accept my offer, please give me some paper and a pen. He agreed and I began, from "About to Zizania".

When the cadre returned, I explained a few words of the index to him, the meanings, the history and development of the Church, for instance, - what is an abbot - an abbey - life in an abbey - silence, poverty, obedience, chasity, fasting, manual work, pastoral and intellectual work, etc... His curiosity was aroused. very slowly, I continued to explain the index, a kind of intensive catechism for Communist cadres! It was a way to dialogue in truth and love instead of debate and criticism.

I did the same with my guards who asked me to teach them foreign languages. They brought me French books. While teaching them French history, civilization, literature and culture, I was able to explain the impact of the gospel on France and on European history and its culture.

The role of the apostle in our times is to be in the midst of the world, not of the world making use of the facilities of the world.
