DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Saturday (6/6): "This poor widow has put in more than the rest"

Scripture: Mark 12:38-44

38 And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places  39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."  41 And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.  42 And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.  44 For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living."

Meditation: What is true religion and devotion to God? Jesus warns his disciples against the wrong kind of religion. In his denunciation of the scribes (the religious experts of his day), he warns against three things: the desire for prominence rather than selfless service; the desire for deference and recognition (and seeking esteem from others) rather than seeking to promote the good of others through humble service and love; and thirdly, attempting to use one’s position (even a religious position) for self-gain and self-advancement. True religion is relating rightly to God and to one’s neighbor with love, honor, and respect. The Lord puts his Holy Spirit within us that we may be filled with the joy of his presence, the joy of true worship, and the joy of selfless giving and love for others. True reverence for God frees the heart to give liberally, both to God and to neighbor.

Jesus taught his disciples a dramatic lesson in giving with love. Love doesn't calculate; it spends lavishly! Jesus drove this point home to his disciples while sitting in the temple and observing people offering their tithes. Jesus praised a poor widow who gave the smallest of coins in contrast with the rich who gave greater sums. How can someone in poverty give more than someone who has ample means? Jesus' answer is very simple: love is more precious than gold! Jesus taught that real giving must come from the heart. A gift that is given with a grudge or for display loses most of its value. But a gift given out of love, with a spirit of generosity and sacrifice, is invaluable. The amount or size of the gift doesn't matter as much as the cost to the giver. The poor widow could have kept one of her coins, but instead she recklessly gave away all she had! Jesus praised someone who gave barely a penny –  how insignificant a sum –  because it was everything she had, her whole living. What we have to offer may look very small and not worth much, but if we put all we have at the Lord's disposal, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then God can do with it and with us what is beyond our reckoning. Do you know the joy and freedom of giving liberally to God and to neighbor with gratitude and love?

"Lord Jesus, all that I have is yours. Take my life, my possessions, my time and all that I have and use them as you desire for your glory."

Psalm 71:8-9,14-17,22

8 My mouth is filled with thy praise, and with thy glory all the day.
9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.
14 But I will hope continually, and will praise thee yet more and more.
15 My mouth will tell of thy righteous acts, of thy deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.
16 With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come, I will praise thy righteousness, thine alone.
17 O God, from my youth thou hast taught me, and I still proclaim thy wondrous deeds.
22 I will also praise thee with the harp for thy faithfulness, O my God;  I will sing praises to thee with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.

Clergy Congregation's Letter on Year for Priests

"We Will Seek Together to Concentrate on the Identity of Christ the Son of God"

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 5, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Here is the letter Archbishop Mauro Piacenza, secretary of the Congregation for Clergy, sent to the priests of the world ahead of the inauguration of the Year for Priests. The year begins with vespers on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 19. It will close in June of 2010.

* * *

Dear Priests!

In only about two weeks’ time, on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday 19th June, we will experience an intense moment of faith, closely united with the Holy Father and amongst ourselves, when we shall begin the Year for Priests by celebrating First Vespers of the Feast in the Basilica of St. Peter at the Vatican.

Each day we are called to conversion, but we are called to it in a very particular way during this year, in union with all those who have received the gift of priestly ordination. Conversion to what? It is conversion to be ever more authentically that which we already are, conversion to our ecclesial identity of which our ministry is a necessary consequence, so that a renewed and joyous awareness of our “being” will determine our “acting”, or rather will create the space allowing Christ the Good Shepherd to live in us and to act through us.

Our spirituality must be nothing other than the spirituality of Christ himself, the one and only Supreme High Priest of the New Testament.

In this year, which the Holy Father has providentially announced, we will seek together to concentrate on the identity of Christ the Son of God, in communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit, who became man in the virginal womb of Mary, and on his mission to reveal the Father and His wondrous plan of salvation. This mission of Christ carries with it the building up of the Church: behold the Good Shepherd (Cf. Jn. 19:1-21) who gives his life for the Church (Cf. Eph. 5: 25).

Yes, conversion every day of our lives so that Christ’s manner of life may be the manner of life made ever more manifest in each one of us.

We must exist for others, we must undertake to live with the People in a union of holy and divine love (which clearly presupposes the richness of holy celibacy), which obliges us to live in authentic solidarity with those who suffer and who live in a great many types of poverty.

We must be labourers for the building up of the one Church of Christ, for which we must live purposefully and faithfully the communion of love with the Pope, with the Bishops, with our brother priests and with the Faithful. We must live this communion with the unbroken pilgrimage of the Church within the very sinews of the Mystical Body.

We should be able to run spiritually in this Year with a “wide open heart” so as to inwardly conform to our vocation the better to say, in truth “it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20).

The holiness of priests redounds to the benefit of the entire ecclesial Body. Thus it would be most fitting for all of us, be that the ordained Faithful, seminarians, the male and female religious, and the lay Faithful, to find ourselves all together at the Vatican Basilica for the Vespers presided over by the Holy Father, which will be celebrated after welcoming the Reliquary of the heart of that most outstanding priestly model who is St. John Mary Vianney.

Those who are unable to be in City of Rome are encouraged to join themselves spiritually to the occasion.

- Entrance to the Basilica from 16.00

The welcoming of the Reliquary at 17.30, followed by the celebration of Vespers

Entrance Tickets must be requested by Fax (06-69885863) from the Prefecture of the Papal Household and may be collected the preceding day from the Bronze Doors, under the Colonnade to the side of the Basilica.

- Priests will wear their proper clerical attire, and religious the habit of the Institute to which they belong.

- The Year for Priests will conclude with an International Convention in Rome on the 9th, 10th and 11th of June 2010.

More detailed information concerning that event will be made available by this end of the current month of June.

All those who are interested in taking part may refer to Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi (Via della Pigna 13/a, I-00186 Roma – tel. (0039)06-698961) to answer all questions of a practical nature.

St. Norbert

(1080?-1134)

Friends sometimes jokingly mangle the name of the Premonstratensians into “Monstrous Pretensions,” just as the Franciscan O.F.M. is said to mean “Out For Money.” The name actually derives from Premontre, the region of France where Norbert established this Order in the 12th century.

Norbert’s founding of the Order was truly a monstrous task: combating rampant heresies (particularly regarding the Blessed Sacrament), revitalizing many of the faithful who had grown indifferent and dissolute, plus effecting peace and reconciliation among enemies.

Norbert entertained no pretensions about his own ability to accomplish this multiple task. Even with the aid of a goodly number of men who joined his Order, he realized that nothing could be effectively done without God’s power. Finding this help especially in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, he and his Norbertines praised God for success in converting heretics, reconciling numerous enemies and rebuilding faith in indifferent believers. Many of them lived in central houses during the week and served in parishes on weekends.

Reluctantly, Norbert became archbishop of Magdeburg in central Germany, a territory half pagan and half Christian. In this position he zealously and courageously continued his work for the Church until his death on June 6, 1134.

Comment:

A different world cannot be built by indifferent people. The same is true in regard to the Church. The indifference of vast numbers of nominal faithful, their indifference to ecclesiastical authority and essential doctrines of the faith weakens the Church's witness. Unswerving loyalty to the Church and fervent devotion to the Eucharist, as practiced by Norbert, will continue immeasurably towards maintaining the people of God in accord with the heart of Christ.

Quote:

On the occasion of his ordination to the priesthood, Norbert said, "O Priest! You are not yourself because you are God. You are not of yourself because you are the servant and minister of Christ. You are not your own because you are the spouse of the Church. You are not yourself because you are the mediator between God and man. You are not from yourself because you are nothing. What then are you? Nothing and everything. O Priest! Take care lest what was said to Christ on the cross be said to you: 'He saved others, himself he cannot save!'"

CHAPTER III.

MOST HOLY MARY VISITS ELISABETH.

In conformity with this instruction and new mandate of the Most High, the Princess of heaven ordered all her occupations in the house of her cousin Elisabeth. She rose up at midnight in accordance with her former custom, spending the hours in the continued contemplation of the divine mysteries and giving to waking and sleep the time, which most perfectly and exactly agreed with the natural state and conditions of her body. In labor and repose She continued to receive new favors, illuminations, exaltation and caresses of the Lord. During these three months She had many visions of the Divinity, mostly abstractive in kind. More frequent still were the visions of the most holy humanity of the Word in its hypostatic union; for her virginal womb, in which She bore Him, served Her as her continual altar and sanctuary. She beheld the daily growth of that sacred body. By this experience and by the sacraments, which every day were made manifest to Her in the boundless fields of the divine power and essence, the spirit of this exalted Lady expanded to vast proportions. Many times would She have been consumed and have died by the violence of her affections, if She had not been strengthened by the power of the Lord. To these occupations, which were concealed from all, She added those, which the service and consolation of her cousin Elisabeth demanded, although She did not apply one moment more to them, than charity required. These fulfilled, She turned immediately to her solitude and recollection, where she could pour out the more freely her spirit before the Lord.

Not less solicitous was She to occupy Herself interiorly, while She was engaged for many hours in manual occupations. And in all this the Precursor was so fortunate that the great Queen, with her own hands, sewed and prepared the swaddling clothes and coverlets in which he was to be wrapped and reared; for his mother Elisabeth, in her maternal solicitude and attention, had secured for saint John this good fortune humbly asking this favor of the heavenly Queen. Mary with incredible love and subjection complied with her request in order to exercise Herself in obedience to her cousin, whom She wished to serve as the lowest handmaid; for in humility and obedience most holy Mary always surpassed all men. Although saint Elisabeth sought to anticipate Her in much that belonged to her service, yet, in her rare prudence and wisdom, Mary knew flow to forestall her cousin, always gaining the triumph of humility.

In this way most holy Mary put into practice the doctrine of the eternal Word who humiliated himself so far, that, being the form of the eternal Father, the figure of his substance, true God of the true God, He nevertheless assumed the form and condition of a servant (Heb. 1, 3, Philip 2, 6, 7). This Lady was the Mother of God, Queen of all creation, superior in excellence and dignity to all creatures, and yet She remained the humble servant of the least of them; and never would She accept homage and service as if due to Her, nor did She ever exalt Herself, or fail to judge of Herself in the most humble manner. What shall we now say of our most execrable presumption and pride? Since, full of the abomination of sin, we are so senseless as to claim for ourselves with dreadful insanity the homage and veneration of all the world? And if this is denied us, we quickly lose the little sense which our passions have left us. This whole heavenly history bears the stamp of humility, and is a condemnation of our pride. And since it is not my office to teach or correct, but to be taught and to be corrected, I beseech and pray all the faithful children of light to place this example before their eyes for our humiliation.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul

The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook III

(May) 23. The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity.
During Holy Mass, I found myself suddenly united with the Most Holy Trinity. I recognized His majesty and greatness. I was united to the Three Persons. And once I was united to One of these Most Venerable Persons, I was at the same time united to the other Two Persons. The joy and happiness that my soul felt is beyond description. It grieves me that I am unable to put down in words that which has no words. I heard these words: "Tell the Superior General to count on you as the most faithful daughter in the Order."

After these words, I received an inner understanding of what all created things are before God. Immense and incomprehensible it is His majesty. And that He condescends towards us is the abyss of His mercy...

All things will have an end in this vale of tears, Tears will run dry and pains will cease. Only one thing will remain - Love for You O Lord.

All things will have an end in this exile. The ordeals and wilderness of the soul. And though she live in perpetual agony, if God is with her, nothing can shake her.

27 (May 1937). Corpus Christi.
During prayer, I heard these words: "My daughter, let your heart be filled with joy. I, the Lord, am with you. Fear nothing. You are in My Heart." At that moment, I knew the great majesty of God, and I understood that nothing could be compared with one single perception of God. Outward greatness dwindles like a speck of dust before one act of a deeper knowledge of God.

The Lord has poured such a depth of peace into my soul that nothing will disturb it any more. Despite everything that goes on around me, I am not deprived of my peace for a moment. Even if the whole world were crumbling, it would not disturb me the depth of the silence which is within me and in which God rests. All events, all the various things which happen are under His foot.

This deeper knowledge of God gives me full liberty and spiritual freedom, and nothing can disturb my close union with Him, not even the angelic powers. I feel that I am great when I am united to God. What happiness it is to have the consciousness of God on one's heart and to live in close intimacy with Him.

When the procession from Borek came to our house, carrying Him who was to reposed in our chapel, I heard a voice coming from the Host: "Here is My repose". During Benediction, Jesus gave me to know that soon a solemn moment would take place on this very spot. "I am pleased to rest in your heart and nothing will stop Me from granting you graces." This greatness of God floods my soul, and I drown in Him, I lose myself in Him, I am melting away in Him...

 CATHOLIC  TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY

Testimony of David Brewer, MD, former Abortion Provider

(This testimony was originally given at a "Meet the Abortion Providers" workshop sponsored by the Pro-life Action League of Chicago, directed by Joe Scheidler. Priests for Life offers their video, "Inside the Abortion Industry," containing excerpts of the testimonies of many former providers. Contact us for more details.)

Remarks by Joe Scheidler

Dr. Brewer is going to answer questions. It's amazing to me how I pick up a lot of good ideas for my next talks. I'm going to be good from now on, plagiarizing from Dr. McArthur Hill and Dr. Brewer and all the other speakers we have.

One thing that has really impressed me with these talks today is the references to Scripture, and the references to the children in Scripture. How many times when Jesus was telling about the kingdom, He referred to a child? As we've seen pointed out today, when the Apostles were arguing with themselves about who was going to be the greatest and sit closest to the King, Jesus took a little child and stood him in the midst and put His arm around him. He didn't put his arm around the Apostles, He put His arm around this little kid. He said whoever receives a little child this in My name, receives Me. And whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me--that's the kingdom. And He said whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to Me-that's the test we're going to have. What you don't do for them, you don't do it for Me. If you reject them, you reject Me.

At another time when Jesus was ready to go into Jerusalem triumphantly, he was resting. And the Apostles were protecting His rest, and the women came with their little sticky dirty kids and they wanted to climb all over Jesus, and the Apostles said, get out of here, He doesn't want to play with these kids now. And Jesus heard the commotion, and He said those beautiful words about the kingdom. The kingdom is like a little child. Suffer the little children to come to Me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Those of us who receive a little child in His name, receive Him and Him who sent Him, and prepare the world for the kingdom.

QUESTIONS TO DR. DAVID BREWER

Q. Dr. Hill mentioned a recurring nightmare. I was wondering if you had any experiences like that.

A. No, I really didn't. I never dreamed about it or had any nightmares at all.

Q. What about a tubal ligation for a married woman who is not on the pill, has already had one more baby than the doctors said was safe to have?
That's a very good question, and I'd like to answer that with a two minute story rather than answering it directly. I have permission from this lady to use her story. Her name is Kim and she came to me about two weeks ago as a brand-new patient, and said, Dr. Brewer, my husband and I are interested in having a reversal of my tubal ligation. I said, well, that's fine. She said, I want to share with you why I want to have a reversal of the tubal ligation. She told me her story which was that she had had an abortion at an early age, had a lot of guilt, had a lot of trouble being able to tell her husband about it when they were married, but she finally was able to do that and God healed her of the guilt. As a result of having had an abortion herself, like, I'm sure, a number of the women in here who have been through an experience like that, she felt a real burden to go and help. So she went and she took training to become a counselor in a crisis pregnancy center. She invested some of her own money and her time. She was really excited and Kim was just so excited the day that she finished her training course and could begin counseling patients. She said, you know, Dr. Brewer, after I had the abortion and then we were married and we had our family, I had my tubes tied because we didn't want any more children. She said when I went to counsel women in the crisis pregnancy center, I couldn't understand it. All the other counselors were busy but me. She said all the other counselors were having people coming to them but me. I don't know why they avoided me because they weren't assigned. I couldn't explain it. But she prayed about it and God showed her (she said this, I didn't say it) because of the attitude in her heart of cutting off further children and grandchildren He was not blessing her ministry. She and her husband have one child. Then she had her tubes tied for selfish reasons. And apparently God looked and perhaps He saw, how could a woman who had one child and then had the rest of her children cut off, how could she be different in the eyes of a girl seeking an abortion to cut off that particular child? This woman is convinced that her ministry through the crisis pregnancy center and counseling is going to be blessed after she follows in faith what she believes God would have her to do. To me, that's a powerful testimony.

 Q. What year did you do your first abortion?

A. I need to think back. It would have been 1973 because that's when it was legalized. They began flying women in; I was in my second year of residency then, and that was the time that we were learning those techniques.

 Q. What about forms of birth control other than IUDs and pills? Is there a unified policy among Pro-Life groups regarding this?

A. I know of no unified policy. I believe that's a matter of personal interpretation and according to a person's religious background.

 Q. What about Natural Family Planning?

A. Personally, Natural Family Planning is the point that I'm at now and that's where my interest lies. I really feel that I'm here on earth for a short time and I want to get everything that God has for me. To avoid and keep off children by practicing birth control myself would be wrong because that's where I am in my walk with the Lord. I just don't want to be accused of taking my own life back. I don't want my life any more because I didn't do any good with it. So I really want Him to have it and just show me the way.

 Q. Are there any complications from having a tubal reversal?

A. It is true that ectopic pregnancy incidence is greater after having a tubal reversal because the point where the two tubes are put back together is seldom a point where the tubes were the same diameter. So it is possible for a new little baby to get held up in the tube and implant there. Actually, the occurrence of ectopic pregnancy after tubal reversal is probably somewhere between 5 and 15 percent. Now if somebody asked me to play the Illinois Lottery for however many million dollars there were, and buy one ticket and I'd have an 85 to 95 percent chance of winning, I'd almost be foolish to pass that up. So that is a real possibility and we recommend that people have an ultrasound early-on to find out whether there is an ectopic. It might interest you to know, though, that as a result of tubal ligation, there are symptoms and a syndrome called the Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome that come to many women who have had their tubes tied, and it includes bloating, pain, scar tissue, irregular periods and symptoms like Pre-Menstrual Tension Syndrome. We're not sure whether having a tubal ligation by certain methods may interrupt the normal blood flow between the ovary and the uterus and cause some of that to happen. We've had a number of women who have had reversals and have had clearing up of the pain and some of the problems that they've had. It's not true in every case but it's interesting, isn't it, that when we interfere with God's plan for our body, then we take the consequences.

 Q. What percentage of doctors attending medical conventions speak out against abortion and try to convince the AMA to reverse their position on abortion?

A. I have no idea what that percent might be. At most of the meetings I've been to, few, if any, doctors speak up.

 Q. What role do doctors and parents have in teaching their children about life in grammar school?

A. We were fortunate enough in Mississippi to be asked by one of our schools to come and share with teenage girls, the juniors and seniors. There is an excellent slide program put out by a Catholic group which has to do with birth control and contraception, and addresses AIDS, IUDs, pills, venereal disease. The excellent thing is that they present, not only the types of contraception and the drawbacks and the complications, including abortion, but they maintain and firmly announce during that slide show (with tapes) that their answer is chastity. We should save ourselves for our intended one. And I really believe that chastity is the answer for our children, and I believe that that's the way that we should be teaching them.
