DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Saturday (9/19): "He who has ears to hear, let him hear"

Scripture:  Luke 8:4-15

4 And when a great crowd came together and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." As he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." 9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while  and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

Meditation: How good are you at listening, especially for the word of God? God is always ready to speak to each of us and to give us understanding of his word.  Jesus' parable of the sower is aimed at the hearers of his word. There are different ways of accepting God's word and they produce different kinds of fruit accordingly. There is the prejudiced hearer who has a shut mind. Such a person is unteachable and blind to the things of God. Then there is the shallow hearer who fails to think things out or think them through; such a person lacks spiritual depth. They may initially respond with an emotional fervor; but when it wears off their mind wanders to something else.

Another type of hearer is the person who has many interests or cares, but who lacks the ability to hear or comprehend what is truly important.  Such a person is for ever too busy to pray or too preoccupied to study and meditate on God's word. He or she may work so hard that they are too tired to even think of anything else but their work. Then there is the one whose mind is open. Such a person is at all times willing to listen and to learn. He or she is never too proud or too busy to learn. They listen in order to understand. God gives grace to those who hunger for his word that they may understand his will and have the strength to live according to it. Do you hunger for God's word?

"Lord Jesus, faith in your word is the way to wisdom, and to ponder your divine plan is to grow in the truth. Open my eyes to your deeds, and my ears to the sound of your call, that I may understand your will for my life and live according to it."

Psalm 100

1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the lands!
2 Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the LORD is God! It is he that made us, and we are his;  we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!  Give thanks to him, bless his name!
5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Pope Sends Message to Jews on Their New Year

Notes Upcoming Visit to Synagogue

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 18, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI sent a message of congratulations and friendship to the Jewish people on the occasion of the celebration of Rosh Hashanah 5770, Yom Kippur and the upcoming festival of Sukkot.

In a telegram to the chief rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, the Pope said, "I invoke from the Eternal for all Jews copious blessings for constant encouragement in their commitment to promote justice, concord and peace."

On transmitting to the Jewish community "his heartfelt congratulations," the Pontiff expressed the hope that "these celebrations will be the occasion of holy and common joy."

The Holy Father affirmed his "cordial friendship" with the rabbi, and noted his anticipation "to make with joy, after your feasts, a visit to your community and to the synagogue, animated by the profound desire to manifest my personal closeness and that of the whole Catholic Church."

Di Segni thanked the Pope publicly for his message. Vatican Radio reported that the Holy Father will visit Rome's synagogue in the Fall, though the date is yet to be decided.

It will be the third Jewish place of worship that he will have visited in this pontificate, after the synagogues of Cologne, Germany, in Aug. 2005, and of Park East in New York, in April 2008.

The visit to Rome's synagogue will take place 23 years after John Paul II's historic visit there on April 13, 1986, the first time that a Pope entered a Jewish place of worship since St. Peter.

In addition to marking the beginning of the new Jewish year, Rosh Hashanah is also the first of the ten days of repentance that end with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

DAILY LITURGICAL SAINT

September 19

St. Januarius

(d. 305?)

Little  is known of Januarius's life. He is believed to have been martyred in the Diocletian persecution of 305. Legend has it that after Januarius was thrown to the bears in the amphitheater of Pozzuoli, he was beheaded, and his blood ultimately brought to Naples.

Comment:

It is defined Catholic doctrine that miracles can happen and can be recognized—hardly a mind-boggling statement to anyone who believes in God. Problems arise, however, when we must decide whether an occurrence is unexplainable in natural terms, or only unexplained. We do well to avoid an excessive credulity, which may be a sign of insecurity. On the other hand, when even scientists speak about "probabilities" rather than "laws" of nature, it is something less than imaginative for Christians to think that God is too "scientific" to work extraordinary miracles to wake us up to the everyday miracles of sparrows and dandelions, raindrops and snowflakes.

Quote:

“A dark mass that half fills a hermetically sealed four-inch glass container, and is preserved in a double reliquary in the Naples cathedral as the blood of St. January, liquefies 18 times during the year.... This phenomenon goes back to the 14th century.... Tradition connects it with a certain Eusebia, who had allegedly collected the blood after the martyrdom.... The ceremony accompanying the liquefaction is performed by holding the reliquary close to the altar on which is located what is believed to be the martyr's head. While the people pray, often tumultuously, the priest turns the reliquary up and down in the full sight of the onlookers until the liquefaction takes place.... Various experiments have been applied, but the phenomenon eludes natural explanation. There are, however, similar miraculous claims made for the blood of John the Baptist, Stephen, Pantaleon, Patricia, Nicholas of Tolentino and Aloysius Gonzaga—nearly all in the neighborhood of Naples” (Catholic Encyclopedia).

CHAPTER I.

MARY ACCOMPANIES JESUS ON HIS JOURNEYS.

But as Judas found little support in his natural disposition, and as the disciples, not being as yet confirmed in virtue and not as yet even in grace, were guilty of some human failings, the imprudent man began to compliment himself on his perfection and to take more of the faults of his brethren than of his own (Luke 4, 41). He permitted himself thus to be deceived, making no effort to amend or repent, he allowed the beam in his own eyes to grow while watching the splinters in the eyes of others. Complaining of their little faults and seeking, with more presumption than zeal, to the weaknesses of his brethren, he committed greater sins himself. Among the other Apostles he singled out saint John, looking upon him as an intermeddler and accusing him in his heart of ingratiating himself with the Master and his blessed Mother. The fact that he received so many special favors from Them was of no avail to deter him from this false assumption. Yet so far Judas had committed only venial sins and had not lost sanctifying grace. But they argued a very bad disposition, in which he wilfully persevered. He had freely entertained a certain vain complacency in himself; this at once called into existence a certain amount of envy, which brought on a calumnious spirit and harshness in judging of the faults of his brethren. These sins opened the way for greater sins; for immediately the fervor of his devotion decreased, his charity toward God and men grew cold, and his interior light was lost and extinguished; he began to look upon the Apostles and upon the most holy Mother with a certain disgust and find little pleasure in their intercourse and their heavenly activity.

The most prudent Lady perceived the growth of this defection in Judas. Eagerly seeking his recovery and salvation before he should cast himself entirely into the death of sin, She spoke to him and exhorted him as her beloved child and with extreme sweetness and force of reasoning. Although at times this storm of tormenting thoughts, which had begun to rise in the breast of Judas, was allayed; yet it was only for a short time, and soon it arose and disturbed him anew. Giving entrance to the devil into his; heart, he permitted a furious rage against the most meek Dove to take possession of him. With insidious hypocrisy he sought to deny his sins or palliate them by alleging other reasons for his conduct: as if he could ever deceive Jesus and Mary and hide from Them the secrets of his heart. Thereby he lost his interior reverence for the Mother of mercy, despising exhortations and openly reproaching Her for her gentle words and reasonings. This ungrateful presumption threw him from the state of grace, the Lord was highly incensed and deservedly left him to his own evil counsels. By thus designedly rejecting the kindness and the intercession of most holy Mary, he closed against himself the gates of mercy and of his only salvation. His disgust with the sweetest Mother soon engendered in him an abhorrence of his Master; he grew dissatisfied with his doctrines and began to look upon the life of an Apostle and intercourse with the disciples as too burdensome.

Nevertheless divine Providence did not abandon him immediately, but continued to send him interior assistance, although in comparison with former helps they were of a kind more common and ordinary. They were, however, in themselves sufficient for his salvation, if he would have made use of them. To these graces were added the gentle exhortations of the kindest Mistress, urging him to restrain himself and to humble himself and ask pardon of his divine Master. She offered him mercy in his name and her own kind assistance in obtaining it, promising to do penance for him, if he would consent to be sorry for his sins and amend his life. All these advances did the Mother of grace make in order to prevent the fall of Judas. She was well aware, that not seeking to arise from a fall and to persevere in sin was a much greater evil than to have fallen. The conscience of this proud disciple could not but reproach him with his wickedness; but becoming hardened in his heart, he began to dread the humiliation, which would have been to his credit, and he fell into still greater sins. In his pride he rejected the salutary counsels of the Mother of Christ and chose rather to deny his guilt, protesting with a lying tongue, that he loved his Master and all the rest, that there was no occasion for amending his conscience in this regard.

In order that I may not incur the blame of concealing what belongs to this chapter, I will mention another cause of the ruin of Judas. When the number of the Apostles and disciples increased, the Lord resolved to appoint one of them to take charge of the alms received; thus to supply the common needs and pay the imperial tribute. Jesus made known his wishes to all indiscriminately without addressing Himself to any one in particular. While all of them feared such an office and sought to evade it, Judas immediately strove obtain it. In order to secure his appointment he humbled himself so far as to ask saint John to speak to the holy Queen and induce Her to arrange this matter for him with her Son. Saint John yielded to the request of Judas and spoke to the most prudent Mother; but She, knowing that this request of Judas was not proper or just, but proceeded from ambition and avarice, did not wish to propose it to the divine Master. The same kind of influence Judas sought to bring into play through saint Peter and the other Apostles, without success; for the Lord in his goodness wished to stay his ruin, and justify his cause before men, if He should grant the request. At this resistance the heart of Judas, already corrupted by avarice, instead of quietly yielding, was consumed with unhappy desires for the office, and the devil stirred up thoughts of vilest ambition, such as would have been most improper and wicked in any one, and hence were much more culpable in Judas, who had been a disciple in the school of highest perfection and who had lived in the light of the Sun of justice and its beautiful Moon Mary! Neither in the day of abundant graces, when the Sun Jesus lighted his paths, nor in the night of temptations, when the Moon Mary disclosed to him the wiles of the poisonous serpent, could he have failed to become aware of the wickedness of such suggestions. But, as he flew from the light and cast himself willfully into darkness, he presumed to ask most holy Mary in a direct manner for her influence in obtaining his object. He had lost all fear and hid his avarice in the cloak of virtue. Approaching Her, he said that he had made his request through saint Peter and saint John, with the sole desire of diligently serving Her and his divine Master, since not all would attend to the duties of this office with proper solicitude; and that, therefore, he now asked to obtain the position of purser for him from the Master.

Show the American people what an abortion is!

                     (continued)

I have had two abortions. Both before the age of 20. I never knew that it could hurt the baby, I didn't even know that the babies could have a heart beat before three months. But then again, I had never been totally informed of all the details. But all I did know was that it hurt and the pain after wards is awful. I still have nightmares of my other two children being ripped apart and screaming for my help, but I couldn't help them because I was doing it. I wonder everyday what if, and the painful memories and the guilt never leave me. My first abortion was at 11 weeks and the second was at 14.2 weeks. I even seen the ultrasound picture of it. But like I said the painful memories never leave me the sadness and guilt run through me a million times a day. But nothing has ever shook me like these pictures. They made me sick to think that I did that. Especially one with the hands and feet of the 14 week old baby are so well formed. It even had a crease in the babies hand. It was so beautiful, almost like it was reaching out. A child's hand reaching for a loving touch. I never could have imagined something so gruesome, so awful. It will only make my nightmares worse. All I can say is that I wish somebody would have showed me the truth before I murdered two beautiful babies. Hopeful someone is out there right now looking at your site to find the truth. And I hope that the truth saves the wonderful life that is growing inside them. If only one is saved then, then I thank you for showing the truth, no matter how graphic. Thank you.

***

I am sitting here in complete shock. What has our society come to? This is in no way a humane procedure. Could you imagine if this were a dog? Animal rights activists would be appalled. I wish I would have never seen this, but so glad I am now aware.

***

Let me state first that I am rarely if ever speechless, I am very outspoken and speak what I feel. The first trimester abortion images are jolting, however, your late pregnancy abortion images will haunt me the rest of my life. What kind of species are we that we would allow this horrific act to become acceptable practice? For the love of God, what monster came up with the idea of partial birth abortion and who allowed it to continue? What sort of people perform these horrendous acts. I always knew abortion was an unpleasant but unseen part of our world yet I was silent all these years, and my silence was in essence giving my acceptance, I promise you this, I will never be silent about this matter again. I will never sleep soundly again, and will pass the link to your galleries to anyone and everyone I can think of. God Forgive Me..

***

Hello, I am 23 years old and pregnant with my second child. I was searching online for pictures of babies at my week gestation. Out of curiosity I clicked a link to your page. I was absolutely horrified by what I saw. I am now 28 wks pregnant. I saw pictures of babies that have been burned to death by saline, chopped to pieces and suctioned out of the womb, and many, many more horrible deaths for these children. I always considered myself "pro-life" but like many others I was confused on how I felt about pregnancies resulting from rape and even confused about a mother having a choice if she new something could be terribly wrong with her child. I know now that those children should have had the same chance at life as the butchers who killed them. I don't think abortion is right for any woman at any gestational period. Although I was against abortion to begin with your website has reassured me. I have those pictures in my head and always will. If God didn't want you to get pregnant you wouldn't have. If there is no way you can handle being a parent PLEASE consider adoption before abortion. My heart is broken because of these pictures. I could never dream of anyone being so cruel. I read what someone posted about your website and I liked it alot. "I kill a newborn and I go to jail for murder. I get a degree, kill a child, and get paid." Where is the justice? Where is America's heart? Where is God? People have closed their eyes and hearts to what God has given us. We are killing our most precious miracles. These children, thank God, are far away from all the harm that could have come to them. These babies walk with Jesus now and I am thankful. I will recommend your website to everyone that I meet who is pro-abortion. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to see the evil that is happening to God's children. God Bless you and all you are doing.

More Comments from our Visitors Regarding the Graphic photos of Abortion on our Website

I wanted to let your website know that I deeply appreciate all sorts of information available to the public. To see all those innocent babies who didn’t even get to see the light of day except in pieces sickens and disgusts me. I once was pro-choice but now, I am definitely Pro Life because what is happening out there is nothing less than murder. All women should know the facts before even contemplating an abortion. I can't understand why any one would perform one except that they are sick in the head and are evil in the spirit. I am 17 years old and to know this at this age, helps me prepare for the future and decisions I make.

***

I found your website quite by accident. I am expecting my second child, and was looking for images of fetal development. I appreciate the wonderful photos of a baby in utero that you have posted, and am anxious to share them with my husband. I was horrified by the gallery of photos of those tiny innocents - murdered, but I’m glad to have seen them. No one can truly form an opinion on abortion without seeing the horror. I had no idea the practice was so brutal. I wonder how many women would choose to have an abortion, once viewing those photos and having the various procedures described in detail. So much is made in this country of a woman’s right to choose, but little is said about a woman’s responsibility to make wise choices before she ends up pregnant. …If women were responsible, then abortion would not be an issue.

Thank you for showing what abortion really is! I am a woman who suffers with extreme sadness and tremendous sorrow for my two abortions. I only wish that I had known about this website before I made my so called "choice"! I am a 33 year old catholic that was mislead by my fiancé...I have had two first trimester abortions within a 6 month window 3 years ago, I feel that I was forced to have. I have suffered with this sorrow for 3 years and I ask for many prayers. I have so much regret and pain in my heart for the murder of my two beautiful babies that I would give anything just to hold there precious little faces in my hands and look into their little eyes and tell them I would give my own life for them just so they my have a chance to see this beautiful world and be able to run and play in it, and to see what the sun and moon looks like and to see the ocean with all the creatures that swim in it! I took all that away just to please a man. And for that I have GREAT REGRET AND PAIN...I do not want anyone to go thru what I have been suffering with. I am now married to a wonderful understanding Christian man who supports me in my desire to help women and men understand the truth about abortions! I want to get started I just don't know who to contact. Can you please pray for me and tell me who to contact so I may volunteer my time to this urgent cause! Thank You and You have my prayers and support!

i just had a baby 4 weeks ago and abortion never entered my mind, i was raised a catholic and abortion just wasn't the right thing to do, seeing those pictures of the aborted babies made me realize that my baby son that i have is the most wonderful human being in the world. I balled my eyes out looking at those pictures and it sickens me to know that there are people out in this world getting and giving abortions everyday. People just don't realize the mistake they are making. I now will pray for all the aborted babies in the world. It is so sad.

                           (to be continued)

From the inception of his pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is so horrific that words alone can never convey its meaning.

Fr. Frank serves on the board of the Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn from other social reform movements is being prepared.

We present here some of the grim reality of abortion. Only seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to this injustice.

These images are arranged according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist, Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted children.

It is especially critical to show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that the myth persists that they are not really children at all.

We thank all of you who have contacted us to tell us about how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others this horrible reality.

God, have mercy. Amen.·
