DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Saturday (9/5): "The Son of man is lord of the Sabbath"

Scripture: Luke 6:1-5

1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?" 3 And Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?" 5 And he said to them, "The Son of man is lord of the Sabbath."

Meditation: What does the commandment "keep holy the Sabbath" require of us? Or better yet, what is the primary intention behind this command? The religious leaders confronted Jesus on this issue. The "Sabbath rest" was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God's goodness and the goodness of his work, both in creation and redemption. It was a day set apart for the praise of God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. It was intended to bring everyday work to a halt and to provide needed rest and refreshment. Jesus' disciples are scolded by the scribes and Pharisees, not for plucking and eating corn from the fields, but for doing so on the Sabbath. In defending his disciples, Jesus argues from the scriptures that human need has precedence over ritual custom. In their hunger, David and his men ate of the holy bread offered in the Temple (1 Samuel 21:2-7). On every Sabbath morning twelves loaves were laid before God on a golden table in the Holy Place. Each loaf represented one of the twelve tribes of Israel. No one was allowed to eat this bread except the priests because it represented the very presence of God. David understood that human need took precedence over rules and ritual regulations.

Why didn't the Pharisees recognize the claims of mercy over rules and regulations? Their zeal for ritual observance blinded them from the demands of charity. Jesus' reference to the bread of the Presence alludes to the true bread from heaven which he offers to all who believe in him. Jesus, the Son of David, and the Son of Man, a title for the Messiah, declares that he is "Lord of the Sabbath." Jesus healed on the Sabbath and he showed mercy to those in need. All who are burdened can find true rest and refreshment in him. Do you seek rest and refreshment in the Lord and in the celebration of the Lord's Day?

"Lord Jesus, you refresh us with your presence and you sustain us with your life-giving word. Show me how to lift the burden of others, especially those who lack the basic necessities of life, and to refresh them with humble care and service."

Psalm 145:17-21

17 The LORD is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.
18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desire of all who fear him, he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The LORD preserves all who love him; but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever. -

Super-priests and 21st Century Challenges (Part 1)

Interview With Official From Apostolic Signature

ROME, SEPT. 3, 2009 (Zenit.org).- It is hard for priests to fulfill the role that God has entrusted to them, but there are tools to help both parishes and their pastors to stay focused on true priorities, according to the assistant promoter of justice at the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature.

ZENIT spoke with Franciscan Father Nikolaus Schöch about the challenges priests face and traits that should characterize parishes. He gives advice on how to organize schedules and the importance of fostering intergenerational friendships among priests.

Part 2 of this interview will be published Friday.

ZENIT: Nowadays, what is the main service a parish priest should provide the faithful?

Father Schöch: In their ministry today, priests seem to suffer from being spread too thin amid increasing pastoral activities and, faced with the issues of present day society and culture, they tend to reconsider their lifestyles and the priorities of pastoral work, all the while seeing a growing need for permanent formation.

In this respect, one must bear in mind that the parish itself -- and sometimes the diocese, too -- despite its autonomy, cannot remain isolated, particularly in these times when so many means of transportation and communication are available. Parishes are living members of the one and only Body of Christ, the one and only Church, which welcome and serve both the members of local communities and all those who, for any reason, approach it at any given time -- perhaps bringing the action of God's grace to someone's conscience or to someone's life. Naturally, this should not give way to disorder, nor irregularities in terms of canon law, which are also intended to serve pastoral activity.

Also, the parish priest's role as shepherd guiding the community stems from his particular relationship with Christ, the Head and Shepherd. It is a sacramental role.

It is not entrusted to the priest by the community but, rather, by the Lord himself, through the bishop.

ZENIT: What guidelines should there be in a parish to ensure appropriate organization and attention of the faithful?

Father Schöch: In a parish's liturgical celebrations and services, attention must be placed on people's mobility, the coming together of many people in certain places, and the new general assimilation of trends, habits, fashions and timetables.

In establishing the timetables of parish Masses and confessions, the parish priest should consider the most appropriate schedule for most of the faithful, while also allowing those with special time limitations easy access to the sacraments. Timetables should be based not so much on priests' convenience, but on people's needs, considering work and school hours. For example, there is not much point in offering the sacrament of penance only during work hours, if this means that exclusively elderly people will be able to attend.

ZENIT: What criteria should parish priests take into account in administrating a parish efficiently while endeavoring to save souls?

Father Schöch: Insofar as he shares in the directive action of Christ, Head and Shepherd, over his Body, the priest is specifically endowed with the capacity to be the "point of communion" from a pastoral viewpoint: "To make the Church the home and the school of communion: that is the great challenge facing us in the millennium which is now beginning, if we wish to be faithful to God's plan and respond to the world's deepest yearnings." ("Novo Millennio Ineunte," No. 43).

At a time when there is an abundance of councils, it is necessary to bear in mind the parish priest's personal responsibility in moderating the parish. On the other hand, this governmental function requires that he be the point of communion; in other words, a man who unites the entire parish and who is not -- separately -- friendly with certain faithful or groups. He must be a man who unites the rich with the poor, intellectuals with simple people, young people with the elderly, mothers with single women, religious with laypeople, conservatives with progressives, etc.

No parish priest can fully carry out his mission in an isolated or individual manner, but only joining forces with other priests, under the direction of Church authorities. In the future, cooperation will become increasingly important between priests of several parishes; parish priests and their vicars; diocesan clergy and the members of institutes of consecrated life; clergy and laypeople.

Mutual understanding and assistance, and even relationships, between older priests and younger ones, are desirable and should be especially fostered: Both stages are equally necessary for the Christian community and are appreciated by the bishops and the Pope.

The Second Vatican Council recommends that older priests show understanding and sympathy toward younger priests' initiatives; and it advises young ones to respect the experience of older priests and to trust them; it suggests that both treat each other with sincere affection, following the example of so many priests of yesterday and today; the parish priest and other priests, including the religious, are called upon to testify to communion in everyday life.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
(1910-1997)

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the tiny woman recognized throughout the world for her work among the poorest of the poor, was beatified October 19, 2003. Among those present were hundreds of Missionaries of Charity, the Order she founded in 1950 as a diocesan religious community. Today the congregation also includes contemplative sisters and brothers and an order of priests.

Born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia (then part of the Ottoman Empire), Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived. For a time, the family lived comfortably, and her father's construction business thrived. But life changed overnight following his unexpected death.

During her years in public school Agnes participated in a Catholic sodality and showed a strong interest in the foreign missions. At age 18 she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. It was 1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final time and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. There she chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her—the poverty, the suffering, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people.

In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as “a call within a call. The message was clear. I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.” She also heard a call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and, instead, to “follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor.”

After receiving permission to leave Loreto, establish a new religious community and undertake her new work, she took a nursing course for several months. She returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white sari and sandals (the ordinary dress of an Indian woman) she soon began getting to know her neighbors—especially the poor and sick—and getting to know their needs through visits.

The work was exhausting, but she was not alone for long. Volunteers who came to join her in the work, some of them former students, became the core of the Missionaries of Charity. Other helped by donating food, clothing, supplies, the use of buildings. In 1952 the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former hostel, which became a home for the dying and the destitute. As the Order expanded, services were also offered to orphans, abandoned children, alcoholics, the aging and street people.

For the next four decades Mother Teresa worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor. Her love knew no bounds. Nor did her energy, as she crisscrossed the globe pleading for support and inviting others to see the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 5, 1997, God called her home.

Comment:

Mother Teresa's beatification, just over six years after her death, was part of an expedited process put into effect by Pope John Paul II. Like so many others around the world, he found her love for the Eucharist, for prayer and for the poor a model for all to emulate.

Quote:

Speaking in a strained, weary voice at the beatification Mass, Pope John Paul II declared her blessed, prompting waves of applause before the 300,000 pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. In his homily, read by an aide for the aging pope, the Holy Father called Mother Teresa “one of the most relevant personalities of our age” and “an icon of the Good Samaritan.” Her life, he said, was “a bold proclamation of the gospel.”

CHAPTER V.

THE BLESSED MOTHER OFFERS HER SON AS VICTIM TO THE

ETERNAL FATHER; JESUS DEPARTS FROM NAZARETH.

But with an undismayed and magnanimous heart She gave answer to the Most High: "Eternal King and omnipotent God of infinite wisdom and goodness, all that has being outside of Thee exists solely for thy mercy and greatness, and Thou art undiminished Lord of all. How then dost Thou command me, an insignificant wormlet of the earth, to sacrifice and deliver over to thy will the Son, whom thy condescension has given me? He is thine, eternal Father, since from all eternity before the morning star Thou hast engendered Him (Ps. 109, 3), and Thou begettest Him and shalt beget Him through all the eternities and if I have clothed Him in the form of servant (Philip 2, 7) in my womb and from my own blood, and if I have nourished his humanity at my breast and ministered to it as a Mother: this most holy humanity is also thy property, and so am I, since I have received from Thee all that I am and that I could give Him. What then can I offer to Thee, that is not more thine than mine? I confess, most high King, that thy magnificence and beneficence are so liberal in heaping upon thy creatures thy infinite treasures, that in order to bind Thyself to them Thou wishest to receive from them as a free gift, even thy own onlybegotten Son, Him whom Thou begettest from thy own substance and from the light of thy Divinity. With Him came to me all blessings together and from his hands I received immense gifts and graces (Wis. 7, 11); He is the Virtue of my virtue, the Substance of my spirit, Life of my soul and Soul of my life, the Sustenance of all my joy of living. It would be a sweet sacrifice, indeed, to yield Him up to Thee who alone knowest his value; but to yield Him for the satisfaction of thy justice into the hands of his cruel enemies the cost of his life, more precious than all the works of creation; this indeed, most high Lord, is a great sacrifice which Thou askest of his Mother. However let not my will but thine be done. Let the freedom of the human race be thus bought; let thy justice and equity be satisfied; let thy infinite love become manifest; let thy name be known and magnified before all creatures. I deliver Him over into thy hands before all creatures. I deliver over into thy hands my beloved Isaac, that He may be truly sacrificed; I offer my Son, the Fruit of my womb, in order that, according to the unchangeable decree of thy Will, He may pay the debt contracted not by his fault, but by the children of Adam, and in order that in his Death He may fulfill all that thy holy Prophets, inspired by Thee, have written and foretold."

This sacrifice with all that pertained to it, was the greatest and the most acceptable that ever had been made to the eternal Father since the creation of the world, or ever will be made to the end, outside of that made by his own Son, the Redeemer; and hers was most intimately connected with and like to that, which He offered. If the greatest charity consists in offering one's life for the beloved, without a doubt most holy Mary far surpassed this highest degree of love toward men, as She loved Her Son much more than her own life. For in order to preserve the life of her Son, She would have given the lives of all men, if She had possessed them, yea and countless more. Among men there is no measure by which to estimate the love of that heavenly Lady, and it can be estimated only by the love of the eternal Father for his Son. As Christ says to Nikodemus (John 15, 7): so God loved the world, that He gave his only Son in order that none of those who believed in him might perish; so this might also be said in its degree of the love of the Mother of mercy and in the same way do we owe to Her proportionately our salvation. For She also loved us so much, that She gave her only Son for our salvation; and if She had not given it in this manner, when it was asked of Her by the eternal Father on this occasion, the salvation of men could not have been executed by this same decree, since this decree was to be fulfilled on condition, that the Mother's will should coincide with that of the eternal Father. Such is the obligation which the children of Adam owe to most holy Mary.

Having accepted the offering of the great Lady, it was fitting that the most Blessed Trinity should reward and immediately pay Her by some favor, which would comfort Her in her sorrow and manifest more clearly the will of the eternal Father and the reasons for his command. Therefore the heavenly Lady, still in the same vision and raised to a more exalted ecstasy, in which She was prepared and enlightened in the manner elsewhere described (I, 623), the Divinity manifested Itself to Her by an intuitive and direct vision. In this vision, by the clear light of the essence of God, She comprehended the inclination of the infinite Good to communicate his fathomless treasures to the rational creatures by means of the works of the incarnate Word, and She saw the glory, that would result from these wonders to the name of he Most High. Filled with jubilation of her soul at the prospect of all these sacramental mysteries, the heavenly Mother renewed the offering of her divine Son to the Father; and God comforted Her with the life-giving bread of heavenly understanding, in order that She might with invincible fortitude assist the incarnate Word in the work of Redemption as Coadjutrix and Helper, according to the disposition of infinite Wisdom and according as it really happened afterwards in the rest of her life.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul

The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary

NOTEBOOK V

January 21, (1938). Jesus, how truly dreadful it would be to suffer if it were not for You. But it is You, Jesus, stretched out on the cross, who give me strength and are always so close to the suffering soul. Creatures will abandon a person in his suffering, but You O Lord, are faithful...

It often happens when one is ill, as in the case of Job in the Old Testament, that as long as one can move about and work, everything is fine and dandy; but when God sends illness, somehow or other, there are fewer friends about. But yet, there are some. They still take interest in our suffering and all that, but if God sends a longer illness, even those faithful friends slowly begins to desert us. They visit us less frequently, and often their visits cause suffering. Instead of comforting us, they reproach us about certain things, which is an occasion of a good deal of suffering. And so the soul, like Job, is alone; but fortunately it is not alone, because Jesus - Host is with it.

After having tasted the above sufferings and spent a whole night in bitterness, the next morning, when the chaplain (Father Theodore) brought me Holy Communion, I had to control my self by sheer effort of will to keep from crying out at the top of my voice, "Welcome, my true and only Friend." Holy Communion gives me strength to suffer and fight.

I wish to speak of one more thing that I have experienced: when God gives neither death nor health, and (when) this lasts for many years, people become accustomed to this and consider the person as not being ill. Then there begins a whole series of silent sufferings. Only God knows how many sacrifices the soul makes.

One evening, when I was feeling so bad that I wondered how I would get back to my cell, I came across the Sister Assistant (Sister Seraphina), who was asking one of the sisters of the first choir to go to the gate with a certain message. But when she saw me, she said to her, "No Sister, you need not go, but Sister Faustina will, because it is raining heavily." I answered, "Alright", and went and carried out the order, but only God knows the whole of it. This is just one example among many. Sometimes it would seem that a sister of a second choir is made of stone, but she also is human and has a heart and feelings...

At such times, God Himself comes to our rescue, for otherwise the soul would not be able to bear these crosses of which I haven't even begun to write, nor do I intend to do so now. But when I feel the inspiration to do so, I will write about them...

 CATHOLIC  TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY

Show the American people what an abortion is!

                     (continued)

·                                 I saw the pictures of aborted babies on your website, and I have to say that they are by far the most disgusting things I have ever seen. I am pro-life, and I agree with showing pictures of the true horror of abortion to people. I have many friends who are feminists and just accept a "woman’s right to choose" as part of feminism and the rights women are entitled to. I consider myself a feminist too, but I think that abortion has nothing to do whatsoever with women’s rights. It’s our duty to show people what abortion is really like, and it’s protected by free speech too. I used to pray and protest in front of abortion clinics a lot (and I still do whenever I have the time). I can’t tell you how many people have yelled at me "You have no right to show these pictures or to hold those signs or to pray in front of an abortion clinic." To which I reply "Read the First Amendment sometime". Thank you for showing everyone how terrible abortion is.

·                                 After reviewing your information and graphic, detailed images on the internet, I was quite moved to write to you! My family and I are all Pro Life advocates and support your agenda/ movement! How could these horrific, deplorable acts of violence be justified by our past president, Bill Clinton? I’m appalled to even think our "trusted, tried and true" government would support the "partial birth abortion"! We need to wake up the idiots that are in favor of the heinous acts of cruelty and continue to scare the heck out of the public who support this! Thank you for being so concerned and dedicated... I just wanted you to know - someone’s listening.

·                                 I thank all of you and Fr. Pavone who continue to fight for these innocents who can’t protect themselves!

·                                 I had never seen photographs of abortions, and was dismayed and horrified to see them. I had to keep from crying. It is simply outrageous that there are people that can dismiss these children as "not really human". My horror at seeing the child aborted at 24 weeks is beyond my capabilities for words. I am waiting for you to tell me that the picture somehow was doctored up. I only wish you could, because my nephew was a premature infant, weighing only 2 lbs!! Are the abortionists going to tell me that my nephew only became a child after he came out of the womb? It disgusts me that the abortionists are clouding the issue under the cry of "a woman’s right to choose". I respond to that with, "chastity would have been the better choice".

·                                 I am 22 years old I as of now have 4 kids and found out recently that I am going to be blessed with another. I am totally against abortion but never knew why exactly until someone I trusted brought up abortion and I learned info about it and I can NEVER ever even think about doing something like that it is horrible murder. I just want to say that if anyone considers abortion they should think about what they are doing and websites like yours are gross but true, thank you for hearing me.

·                                 I just wanted to say that I think this is a good thing for people to see. There is a living human being in the stomach and it should have the chance of life. I don’t believe in abortions and maybe the people who are thinking about one should see this site first. Maybe then they would hopefully have a second opinion. Adoption would be another option.

·                                 I just spent 35 minutes viewing the photos of the remains of all the aborted babies on your website and now I can hardly breathe. I’ve seen pictures before, but nothing like I saw just now. God help us. I needed to see those pictures to get re-energized and to remember exactly what it is we’re fighting for. Thank you very much for posting the evidence that abortion is the most gruesome, cruel and horrific evil that has ever existed in the world. Please leave the photos on your website so I can direct people to them. God bless you all. May our most loving Mother Mary help us to end this scourge once and for all!

·                                 Thank you for your website. I am so disturbed by the reality of abortion and yet people have no idea how awful it is. Your website can open peoples’ eyes to it. Thank you for your continued work.

·                                 I knew abortion was murder... I just did not realize how much how deep and how true this was, until I viewed the pictures on your web site. My heart breaks for these babies. Thank you for standing up for the truth and what is right. God have mercy on us all.

·                                 Thank you for making these horrible and shocking abortion photos available for the world to see. Unfortunately, those who advocate abortion use lies and misinformation to deceive people from knowing what an atrocity this truly is. The irony is, doctors and nurses know all too well, yet they choose to participate anyhow. Keep up the good work. May God bless you and help you save some innocent lives!

·                                 I’m glad and in support of the initiative you have taken especially the photographs of those we have lost through the failure of our world caring about the unborn. Hopefully sooner rather than later the world will come to its senses and experience a rebirth of caring enough about all life so that we might become whole again. I admire what you’re doing and please keep up the sincere effort to get the world back on the right path.

·                                 Hi. The images on your site are very powerful. I am printing some out to keep with me if (or I should say when) I encounter someone who is pro abortion.

·                                 I was originally brought to the Priests for Life site by the articles on NFP, but I decided to read about abortion to satisfy a curiosity. After seeing the images of the aborted CHILDREN (not fetuses like they are usually referred to), I am horrified. How could anyone advocate abortion after viewing these images? I feel sickened just thinking of it. It was stated in one of the articles that people would be offended by broadcasting these pictures. I would compare it to the movie Schindler's List. I in no way enjoyed watching the suffering of the Jews during the holocaust and thought that it was rather tasteless. But, the truth hurts. And, as I might add, Schindler's List was critically acclaimed. I feel ashamed that I had the curiosity to even view the pictures, but it has definitely strengthened my position on abortion. No matter how the child was conceived, planned or unplanned or even by something as terrible as rape, a child is a great blessing and should not be wasted.

                           (to be continued)

From the inception of his pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is so horrific that words alone can never convey its meaning.

Fr. Frank serves on the board of the Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn from other social reform movements is being prepared.

We present here some of the grim reality of abortion. Only seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to this injustice.

These images are arranged according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist, Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted children.

It is especially critical to show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that the myth persists that they are not really children at all.

We thank all of you who have contacted us to tell us about how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others this horrible reality.

God, have mercy. Amen.·
