DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Sunday (6/21): "Why are you afraid? Have you
no faith?"
Scripture: Mark 4:35-41
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go
across to the other side." 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with
them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And
a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that
the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the
cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if
we perish?" 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea,
"Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40
He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?" 41 And they
were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that
even wind and sea obey him?"
Meditation: How can we fight fear with faith? Jesus' sleeping
presence on the storm-tossed sea reveals the sleeping faith of his
disciples. They feared for their lives even though their Lord and
Master was with them in the boat. They were asleep to Christ while he
was present to them in their hour of need. The Lord is ever present to
us. And in our time of testing he asks the same question: Why are
you afraid? Have you no faith? Do you recognize the Lord's
presence with you, especially when you meet the storms of adversity,
sorrow, and temptation? Whenever we encounter trouble, the Lord is
there with the same reassuring message: "It is I, do not be afraid."
What are the characteristics of faith and how can we grow in it?
Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to us. Believing is only
possible by grace and the help of the Holy Spirit, who moves the heart
and who opens the eyes of the mind to understand and accept the truth
which God has revealed to us. Faith enables us to relate to God rightly
and confidently, with trust and reliance, by believing and adhering to
his word, because he is utterly reliable and trustworthy. If we want to
live, grow, and persevere in faith, then it must be nourished with the
word of God. Fear does not need to cripple us from taking right action
or rob us of our trust and reliance on God. Courage working with faith
enables us to embrace God's word of truth and love with confidence and
to act on it with firm hope in God's promises. The love of God
strengthens us in our faith and trust in him and enables us to act with
justice and kindness towards our neighbor even in the face of opposition
or harm. Do you allow the love of Christ to rule in your heart and
mind, and to move your will to choose what is good in accordance with
his will?
"Lord, increase my faith in your redeeming love and power that I may
always recognize your abiding presence with me. And give me courage to
do your will in all circumstances."
Psalm 107:23-31
23 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great
waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he commanded, and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the
waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their
courage melted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and were at their wits'
end.
28 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them
from their distress;
29 he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to
their desired haven.
31 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful
works to the sons of men!

Year for Priest Initiatives Flood Internet
Cardinal Reports Global Positive Response
VATICAN CITY, JUNE 19, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- The Congregation for Clergy is launching a new Web site for the Year for Priests, which begins today. The enthusiasm surrounding this occasion is echoing in initiatives across the globe.
A letter from Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, prefect of the congregation, expressed the hope that "this may be a time of grace that will produce great apostolic fruit, especially of fidelity and intense renewal in the work of the ministry."
He explained that their new site offers spiritual resources and documents for priests and lay people to celebrate the year, in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
The cardinal affirmed that the Year for Priests "has been warmly received throughout the world" and the "positive effects will make themselves felt very quickly."
He invited ordained ministers to "participate in it with every effort and creativity" and to "be unconditional disciples and audacious missionaries" for Christ.
Another initiative was organized by WorldPriest, a group of Catholic communications professionals based on both the United States and Ireland.
In addition to online resources, the group coordinated four Masses which will be celebrated on different points of the globe today, uniting English-speaking Catholic communities to pray for priests.
Each Mass will take place at 3 p.m. local time, beginning with one in Sydney, Australia, celebrated by the archbishop of that city, Cardinal George Pell.
Next, Carmelite Father Sebastian Koodappattu will preside over a Mass in Kerala, India, followed by Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam in Ireland's Knock Shrine. Monsignor Michael Curran will complete the circle with a Eucharistic Celebration in New York.
In addition, a special Mass will be televised by WorldPriest on Sunday in honor of the World Day of Prayer for Priests, which the group promotes every year.
Father Brendan Kilcoyne, president of St. Jarlath's College in Tuam will preside over this Mass that will be broadcast by the RTE national television station.
Vocational renewal
National initiatives in England and Wales are available through the new online portal created by the bishops' conference there.
This Web site contains resources for priests, and allows users to browse through the online offerings of each of the 22 dioceses in the conference.
Thus, for example, one can access the new Web site from the Archdiocese of Birmingham that features a multimedia "virtual seminary," posters, prayer cards, priestly testimonials and a seminary blog.
Father Eddie Clare, committee chairman of the National Office for Vocation, affirmed that one important outcome of this year will be a "renewed emphasis on vocations."
He added, "The more we value our priests and their irreplaceable presence at the heart of the Church, more men may consider that this may be their calling in life."
One institution that is offering visual demonstrations of the irreplaceable role of priestly ministry is the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
In a new Web site launched for the Year for Priests, it is featuring slide show presentations about its ordained alumni and the ways they have served the Church.
The year will run until June 19, 2010, and will center on the theme: "Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests."

DAILY LITURGICAL SAINT |

June 21, 2009
St.
Aloysius Gonzaga
(1568-1591)
The
Lord can make saints anywhere, even amid the brutality and license of
Renaissance life. Florence was the “mother of piety” for Aloysius
Gonzaga despite his exposure to a “society of fraud, dagger, poison and
lust.” As a son of a princely family, he grew up in royal courts and
army camps. His father wanted Aloysius to be a military hero.
At
age seven he experienced a profound spiritual quickening. His prayers
included the Office of Mary, the psalms and other devotions. At age nine
he came from his hometown of Castiglione to Florence to be educated; by
age 11 he was teaching catechism to poor children, fasting three days a
week and practicing great austerities. When he was 13 years old he
traveled with his parents and the Empress of Austria to Spain and acted
as a page in the court of Philip II. The more Aloysius saw of court
life, the more disillusioned he became, seeking relief in learning about
the lives of saints.
A
book about the experience of Jesuit missionaries in India suggested to
him the idea of entering the Society of Jesus, and in Spain his decision
became final. Now began a four-year contest with his father. Eminent
churchmen and laypeople were pressed into service to persuade him to
remain in his “normal” vocation. Finally he prevailed, was allowed to
renounce his right to succession and was received into the Jesuit
novitiate.
Like other seminarians, Aloysius was faced with a new kind of
penance—that of accepting different ideas about the exact nature of
penance. He was obliged to eat more, to take recreation with the other
students. He was forbidden to pray except at stated times. He spent four
years in the study of philosophy and had St. Robert Bellarmine
(September 17) as his spiritual adviser.
In
1591, a plague struck Rome. The Jesuits opened a hospital of their own.
The general himself and many other Jesuits rendered personal service.
Because he nursed patients, washing them and making their beds, Aloysius
caught the disease himself. A fever persisted after his recovery and he
was so weak he could scarcely rise from bed. Yet, he maintained his
great discipline of prayer, knowing that he would die within the octave
of Corpus Christi, three months later, at the age of 23.
Comment:
As
a saint who fasted, scourged himself, sought solitude and prayer and did
not look on the faces of women, Aloysius seems an unlikely patron of
youth in a society where asceticism is confined to training camps of
football teams and boxers, and sexual permissiveness has little left to
permit. Can an overweight and air-conditioned society deprive itself of
anything? It will when it discovers a reason, as Aloysius did. The
motivation for letting God purify us is the experience of God loving us,
in prayer.
Quote:
"When we stand praying, beloved brethren, we ought to be watchful and
earnest with our whole heart, intent on our prayers. Let all carnal and
worldly thoughts pass away, nor let the soul at that time think on
anything except the object of its prayer" (St. Cyprian, On the Lord's
Prayer, 31).

VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD
BOOK FOUR
Describing
the Anxieties of Saint Joseph on Account of the Pregnancy of
Most Holy
Mary, the Birth of Christ our Lord, His Circumcision, the
Adoration
of the Kings, the Presentation of the Infant Jesus
In the
Temple, the Flight into Egypt, the Death of the
Holy
Innocents, and the Return to Nazareth.
CHAPTER III.
THE JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM.
It had been decreed by the immutable will
of Providence that the Onlybegotten of the Father should be born in the
town of Bethlehem (Mich. 5, 2), and accordingly it had been
foretold by the Saints and Prophets of foregone ages (Jerem. 10, 9); for
the decrees of the absolute will of God are infallible, and since
nothing can resist them (Esther 13, 9), sooner would heaven and earth
pass away than that they fail of accomplishment (Matth. 24, 35). The
fulfillment of this immutable decree the Lord secured by means of an
edict of Caesar Augustus for the whole Roman empire, ordering the
registration or enumeration of all the world, as saint Luke says (Luke
2, 1). The Roman empire at that time embraced the greater part of what
was then known of the earth and therefore they called themselves masters
of the world, ignoring all the other nations. The object of this census
was to make all the inhabitants acknowledge themselves as vassals of the
emperor, and to pay a certain tax to their temporal lord; for this
registration every one was to go to his native city in order to be
inscribed. This edict was also proclaimed in Nazareth and came to the
hearing of saint Joseph while he was on some errand. He returned to his
house in sorrowful consternation and informed his heavenly Spouse of the
news which had spread about concerning the edict. The most prudent
Virgin answered: "Let not this edict of our temporal ruler cause thee
any concern, my master and spouse, for all that happens to us is
ordained by the Lord and King of heaven and earth; and in all events his
Providence will assist and direct us (Eccli. 22, 28). Let us resign
ourselves into his hands and we shall not be disappointed."
Most holy Mary was capable of being entrusted with
all the mysteries of her most holy Son and She knew of the prophecies
and their fulfillment; hence, also, that the Onlybegotten of the Father
and her own was to be born in Bethlehem, a Stranger and an Unknown. But
She said nothing of this to saint Joseph; for without being commissioned
by the Lord She would reveal none of his secrets. All that She was not
commanded to reveal She concealed with admirable prudence,
notwithstanding her desire of consoling her most faithful and holy
spouse. She wished to entrust Herself to his direction and arrangement
without acting the part of those who are wise in their own conceit, as
Wisdom warns us (Prov. 3, 7). They therefore conferred with each other
about the course to be pursued; for already the pregnancy of the
heavenly Lady was far advanced and her parturition was approaching.
Saint Joseph said: "Queen of heaven and earth and my Mistress, if Thou
hast no order to the contrary from the Almighty, it seems to me
necessary that I go alone. Yet, although this order refers only to the
heads of families, I dare not leave Thee without assistance, nor could I
live without Thee, nor would I have a moment's peace away from Thee; for
my heart could not come to any rest without seeing Thee.
They at the same time resolved upon the day of their
departure, and Joseph diligently searched in the town of Nazareth for
some beast of burden to bear the Mistress of the world. He could not
easily find one because so many people were going to different towns in
order to fulfill the requirements of the edict of the emperor. But after
much anxious inquiry saint Joseph found an unpretentious little beast
which, if we can call such creatures fortunate, was the most fortunate
of all the irrational animals; since it was privileged not only to bear
the Queen of all creation and the blessed fruit of her womb, the King of
kings and the Lord of lords, but afterwards to be present at his Birth (Jsaias
1, 3); and since it gave to its Creator the homage denied to Him by men,
as I shall relate (No. 485). They provided the articles for the journey,
which would last five days. The outfit of the heavenly travelers was the
same as that which they had provided for their previous journey to the
house of Zacharias on their visit to Elisabeth. They carried with them
bread, fruit and some fishes, which ordinarily composed their
nourishment. As the most prudent Virgin was enlightened regarding their
protracted absence, She made use of prudent concealment in taking along
the linens and clothes necessary for her heavenly delivery, for She
wished to dispose all things according to the exalted intents of the
Lord and in preparation for the events which She expected. Their house
they left in charge of some neighbor until they should return.

DIVINE MERCY
|

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook IV
August 15, 1937. Father Andrasz’s
instructions.
These times of dryness and stark awareness of one’s wretchedness, which God
has permitted, allow the soul to know how little it can do by itself. They
will teach you how much you should appreciate Gods’ graces. Secondly,
faithfulness in all exercises and duties, faithfulness in everything, just
as in times of joy. Thirdly, as regards the matters in question, be
absolutely obedient to the Archbishop [Jalbrzykowski] although, from time to
time, the matter can be brought to his attention, but peacefully. Sometimes,
a little bitter truth is necessary.
At the end of the conversation, I asked the priest to allow me to commune
with Jesus as I had done formerly. He answered, “I cannot give orders to the
Lord Jesus, but if He himself draws you to himself you may follow the
attraction. However, always remember to show Him great reverence, for the
Lord is great indeed. If you are truly seeking God’s will in all this and
desire to fulfill it, you can be at peace; the Lord will not allow any sort
of error. As to the mortifications and sufferings, you will give me an
account next time of how you carry them out. Place yourself in the hands of
the Most Holy Mother.”
August 15, 1937. During meditation, God’s presence pervaded me keenly, and I
was aware of the Virgin Mary’s joy at the moment of Her assumption. Towards
the end of the ceremony carried out in honor of the Mother of God, I saw the
Virgin Mary, and She said to me,
Oh, how pleased I am with the homage of
your love!
And at that moment she covered all the
sisters of our congregation with Her mantle. With her right hand, she
clasped Mother General Michael to Herself, and with Her left hand she did so
to me, while all the sisters were at her feet, covered with Her mantle. Then
the Mother of God said,
everyone who perseveres zealously till
death in My congregation will be spared the fire of purgatory, and I desire
that each one distinguish herself by the following virtues: humility and
meekness, chastity and love of God and neighbor; compassion and mercy.
After
these words, the whole congregation disappeared from my sight, and I
remained alone with the Most Holy Mother who instructed me about the will of
God and how to apply it to my life, submitting completely to His most holy
decrees. It is impossible for one to please God without obeying His holy
will.
My daughter, I strongly recommend that you faithfully fulfill all God’s
wishes, for that is most pleasing in His Holy eyes. I very much desire that
you distinguish yourself in this faithfulness in accomplishing Gods’ will.
Put the will of God before all sacrifices and holocausts.
While the heavenly Mother was talking
to me, a deep understanding of this will of God was entering my soul.
My Jesus, delight of my heart, when my soul is filled with Your divinity, I
accept sweetness and bitterness with the same equanimity. One and the other
will pass away. All that I keep in my soul is the love of God. For this I
strive; all else is secondary.

Testimony of Dr.
McArthur Hill, former Abortion Provider

Action League of Chicago, directed by Joe Scheidler. Priests for Life

(continued)
In 1983 1 noticed an increasing number of
patients coming into my practice who attended Applewood Baptist Church.
Each one seemed to refer another and another and another. Then, finally,
the pastor's wife came in with a minor illness. It was a very minor
thing but it required some testing, and the following week she came back
and she came back with her husband. After we had reviewed the test
results he did take the time to present the plan of salvation to me in
my office during office hours. He invited me to accept Christ at that
point as we sat in the office and I knew then, as I knew as an
11-year-old, what it meant to accept Christ, and I regained my composure
rather quickly and I said to them that I would have to think about it.
Well, I went home and I talked to Jeannie
about it and Jeannie was very excited about that, as a matter of fact.
She saw that I was quite excited about it also. We went to church the
following Sunday and at that time the Lord called me, and I responded,
and I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior and I'm able
to stand here today and to tell you that.
Now that I've painted such a nice
picture, and that was a nice warm response, I've told you who I am. Now
I'm going to stand here and tell you that I am a murderer.
I have taken the lives of innocent babies and I have ripped them from
their mothers' wombs with a powerful vacuum instrument. And when they
were too big to do it in that way, I've injected a concentrated salt
solution into the bag of waters to slowly and painfully poison them, and
then to cause labor to follow.
This is how I got involved--and I want
you to listen to this because this is how many people get involved. I
began my residency in July 1971, and on July 7, 1971, one and one-half
years before Roe v. Wade, I went into the operating room where my chief
resident sat down on a stool, he performed an abortion, and then he said
that I could do the next one--there were several lined up for that day.
In medical circles that's called "see one, do one, and teach one."
Simply stated, I'd seen one, I did one, and then I taught others to do
them later.
After I performed the abortion, here are
the words which I dictated, and this is what I want you to listen
carefully to:
"The patient was prepped and draped in
a sterile fashion in the dorsal lithotomy position with an IV with 15
units of pitocin and 1,000 ccs of dehydrogenase lactate running. Under
satisfactory general anesthesia, the cervix was grasped with a thyroid
clamp and dilated to a #10 hanks dilator. After sounding to a depth of 4
inches, a #10 curved curette was introduced into the uterine cavity and
utilized to empty the uterine contents. Five units of pitocin were given
IV at this time. A large, sharp curette was then introduced into the
uterine cavity and the small amount of remaining tissue was curetted
from the anterior uterine wall. The total fluid and tissue obtained was
125 ccs. Estimated blood loss for the procedure was 50 ccs with 200 ccs
of dehydrogenase replacement. After insuring that there was adequate
hemostasis on the cervix at the site of the thyroid clamp application,
the anesthesia was terminated and the patient taken to the recovery room
in satisfactory condition." (End of Dictation)
In about as little time as it took to
read this operative report to you, I had become a murderer, and as I
read years later, cursed. For Deuteronomy 27:25 applied as clearly to me
as to the tribes of Israel who listened as the Levites shouted from the
top of Mount Ebal: Cursed is the man who accepts a bribe to kill an
innocent person. I did not consciously select the words I used in
dictating the operative report, but my subconscious mind was obviously
at work trying to protect my conscience mind through denial.
As you were listening to what I said, you
heard me say the words "uterine contents," you heard me say the word
"tissue," "fluid and tissue," and "procedure." They are all words which
denied what really happened that day.
The pathology specimen that we sent down
was labeled, "Products, of Conception." The operation performed was
called a vacuum curettage. But on the operation request and report,
under special circumstances, were found the words "living fetus." The
gymnastics which my mind performed that day in dictating that report
could not totally erase the fact that something living was killed that
day.
