DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Sunday (9/13):  "But who do you say that I am?"

Scripture: Mark 8:27-33

27 And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesare'a Philip'pi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" 28 And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Eli'jah; and others one of the prophets." 29 And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." 30 And he charged them to tell no one about him. 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men."

Meditation: Who is Jesus for you? At an opportune time Jesus tests his disciples with a crucial question: Who do men say that I am and who do you say that I am? He was widely recognized in Israel as a mighty man of God, even being compared with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Peter, always quick to respond, professes that Jesus is truly the Christ. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter; but only God.Through faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to recognize Jesus as the Anointed One (Messiah and Christ). Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew word Messiah, which means Anointed One. Peter's faith, however was sorely tested when Jesus explained that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption may be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard these words! How different are God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways! Through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross Jesus broke the powers of sin and death and won for us our salvation. The Lord Jesus tests each of us personally with the same question: Who do you say that I am?

"Lord Jesus, I profess and believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You are my Lord and my Savior. Make my faith strong and help me to live in the victory of the cross by rejecting sin and by accepting your will."

Psalm 116:1-9

1 I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplications.
2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;  I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, I beseech thee, save my life!"
5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.
6 The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.
8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;
9 I walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

Christians and Muslims:
Together in overcoming poverty

MESSAGE FOR THE END OF RAMADAN

‘Id al-Fitr 1430 H. / 2009 a.d.

Dear Muslim Friends,

1. On the occasion of your feast which concludes the month of Ramadan, I would like to extend my best wishes for peace and joy to you and, through this Message, propose this theme for our reflection: Christians and Muslims: Together in overcoming poverty.

2. This Message of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has become a tradition cherished by us all, which is looked forward to each year and this is certainly a cause for joy. It has become, over the years, an occasion of cordial encounter in many countries between many Christians and Muslims. It often addresses a matter of shared concern, making it therefore conducive to a confident and open exchange. Are not all these elements immediately perceived as signs of friendship among us for which we should thank God?

3. Coming to the theme of this year, the human person in a situation of impoverishment is undoubtedly a subject at the heart of the precepts that, under different beliefs, we all hold dear. The attention, the compassion and the help that we, brothers and sisters in humanity, can offer to those who are poor, helping them to establish their place in the fabric of society, is a living proof of the Love of the Almighty, because it is man as such whom He calls us to love and help, without distinction of affiliation.

We all know that poverty has the power to humiliate and to engender intolerable sufferings; it is often a source of isolation, anger, even hatred and the desire for revenge. It can provoke hostile actions using any available means, even seeking to justify them on religious grounds, or seizing another man’s wealth, together with his peace and security, in the name of an alleged “divine justice”. This is why confronting the phenomena of extremism and violence necessarily implies tackling poverty through the promotion of integral human development that Pope Paul VI defined as the “new name for peace” (Encyclical Letter Populorum Progressio, 1975, n. 76).

In his recent Encyclical Letter Caritas in Veritate on integral human development in charity and truth, Pope Benedict XVI, taking into consideration the current context of efforts to promote development, underlines the need for a “new humanistic synthesis” (n. 21), which, safeguarding the openness of man to God, gives him his place as the earth’s “centre and summit” (n. 57). A true development, then, must be ordered “to the whole man and to every man” (Populorum Progressio, n. 42).

4. In his talk on the occasion of the World Day for Peace, 1st January 2009, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI distinguished two types of poverty: a poverty to be combated and a poverty to be embraced.

The poverty to be combated is before the eyes of everyone: hunger, lack of clean water, limited medical care and inadequate shelter, insufficient educational and cultural systems, illiteracy, not to mention also the existence of new forms of poverty “…in advanced wealthy societies, there is evidence of marginalization, as well as affective, moral and spiritual poverty” (Message for the World Day of Peace, 2009, n. 2).

The poverty to be embraced is that of a style of life which is simple and essential, avoiding waste and respecting the environment and the goodness of creation. This poverty can also be, at least at certain times during the year, that of frugality and fasting. It is the poverty which we choose which predisposes us to go beyond ourselves, expanding the heart.

5. As believers, the desire to work together for a just and durable solution to the scourge of poverty certainly also implies reflecting on the grave problems of our time and, when possible, sharing a common commitment to eradicate them. In this regard, the reference to the aspects of poverty linked to the phenomena of globalization of our societies has a spiritual and moral meaning, because all share the vocation to build one human family in which all - individuals, peoples and nations - conduct themselves according to the principles of fraternity and responsibility.

6. A careful study of the complex phenomenon of poverty directs us precisely towards its origin in the lack of respect for the innate dignity of the human person and calls us to a global solidarity, for example through the adoption of a “common ethical code” (John Paul II, Address to The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, 27 April 2001, n. 4) whose norms would not only have a conventional character, but also would necessarily be rooted in the natural law written by the Creator in the conscience of every human being (cf. Rom 2, 14-15).

7. It seems that in diverse places of the world we have passed from tolerance to a meeting together, beginning with common lived experience and real shared concerns. This is an important step forward.

In giving everyone the riches of a life of prayer, fasting and charity of one towards the other, is it not possible for dialogue to draw on the living forces of those who are on the journey towards God?

The poor question us, they challenge us, but above all they invite us to cooperate in a noble cause: overcoming poverty!

 Happy ‘Id al-Fitr!

St. John Chrysostom
(d. 407)

The ambiguity and intrigue surrounding John, the great preacher (his name means "golden-mouthed") from Antioch, are characteristic of the life of any great man in a capital city. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing but dignified, and troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics.

If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without a point. Sometimes the point stung the high and mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours.

His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial and ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man.

His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed. Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor. The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam's fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice and charity, John acknowledged no double standards.

Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism and personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines and fine foods. His faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth and chastity were concerned. His actions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by other ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority.

Two prominent personages who personally undertook to discredit John were Theophilus, Archbishop of Alexandria, and Empress Eudoxia. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople and took occasion to charge John with fostering heresy. Theophilus and other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life. Whether intended or not, sermons mentioning the lurid Jezebel (see 1 Kings 9:121:23)  and impious Herodias (see Mark 6:17-29) were associated with the empress, who finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407.

Comment:

John Chrysostom's preaching, by word and example, exemplifies the role of the prophet to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. For his honesty and courage he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification and exile.

Quote:

Bishops "should set forth the ways by which are to be solved very grave questions concerning the ownership, increase and just distribution of material goods, peace and war, and brotherly relations among all people" (Decree on the Pastoral Office of Bishops, 12).

CHAPTER VI.

BAPTISM OF CHRIST. HIS FAST. MARY'S DOINGS DURING THESE EVENTS.

By the means already mentioned the Queen of heaven was informed of all the wonderful doings of our Savior in the vocation of the Apostles and disciples and in his public preaching. She gave thanks to the eternal Father for these the first disciples, acknowledging and admitting them in imitation of her Son as her spiritual children, and offering them to the divine Majesty with new songs of praise and joy. On this occasion of the choice of the first disciples She was favored by a new revelation of the Most High in which She was informed again of his holy and eternal decree concerning the Redemption of man and of the manner in which it was to be executed in the preaching of his most holy Son.

The five disciples of the Lord begged Him to grant them the consolation of seeing and reverencing his mother. In accordance with their petition, He journeyed directly to Nazareth through Galilee, continuing to preach and teach publicly on the way and proclaiming Himself as the Master of truth and eternal life. Many, carried away by the force of his doctrines and by the light and grace overflowing into their hearts, began to listen to Him and to follow Him; though He did not, for the present, call any more to be his disciples. It is worthy of notice that though the five disciples had conceived such an ardent devotion to the heavenly Lady and though they saw with their own eyes how worthy She was of her eminent position among creatures, yet they all maintained strict silence about their thoughts.

The Savior then pursued his way to Nazareth instructing his new children and disciples not only the mysteries of faith, but in all virtues by word and example, as He continued to do during the whole period of his evangelical preaching. With this in view He searched out the poor and afflicted, consoled the sick and sorrowful, visited the infirmaries and prisons, performing miracles of mercy as well for body as for soul. Yet He did not profess Himself as the Author of miracles until he attended the marriage feast at Cana as I shall relate in the next chapter. While the Savior proceeded on his journey his most holy Mother prepared to receive him and his disciples at Nazareth; for She was aware of all that happened, and therefore hospitably set her poor dwelling in order and solicitously procured the necessary victuals beforehand for their entertainment. Thus, just as the Son had in absence instilled into their minds the reverence for the dignity of his Mother, so the most prudent and faithful Mother, in the presence of her Son, wished to instruct them in regard to the worship due to their divine Master, as to their God and Redeemer. The profound humility and worship with which the great Lady received Christ the Savior filled the disciples with new devotion and reverential fear for their divine Master; henceforth She served them as an example and model of true devotion, entering at once into her office as Instructress and spiritual Mother of the disciples of Christ by showing then how to converse with their God and Redeemer. They were immediately drawn toward their Queen and cast themselves on their knees before Her, asking to be received as her sons and servants. The first to do this was saint John, who from that time on distinguished himself in exalting and reverencing Mary before all the apostles, while She on her part received him with an especial love; for, besides his excelling in virginal chastity, he was of a meek and humble disposition.

The great Lady received them all as her guests, serving them their meals and combining the solicitude of a Mother with the modesty and majesty of a Queen, so that She caused admiration even in the holy angels. She served her divine Son on her knees in deepest reverence. At the same time She spoke of the Majesty of their Teacher and Redeemer to the Apostles instructing them in the great doctrines of the Christian faith. During that night, when the Apostles had retired, the Savior betook himself to the oratory of his purest Mother as He had been wont to do, and She, the most Humble among the humble, placed Herself at his feet as in the years gone by. In regard to the practice of humility, all that She could do seemed little to the great Queen, and much less than She ought to in view of his infinite love and the immense gifts received at his hands. She confessed Herself as useless as the dust of the earth. The Lord lifted Her from the ground and spoke to Her words of life and eternal salvation, yet quietly and serenely. For at this period He began to treat Her with greater reserve in order to afford Her a chance of merit, as I have mentioned when I spoke of this departure for the desert and for his Baptism.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul

The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary

NOTEBOOK V

February 2 (1938). Darkness of the soul. Today is the Feast of the Mother of God, and in my soul it is so dark. The Lord has hidden Himself, and I am all alone. My mind has become so dimmed that I see only phantasis about me. Not a single ray of light penetrates my soul. I do not understand myself or those who speak to me. Frightful temptations regarding the holy faith assail me. O my Jesus, save me. I cannot say anything more. I cannot describe these things in detail, for I fear lest someone be scandalized on reading this. I am astonished that such torments can befall a soul. O hurricane, what are you doing to the boat of my heart? This storm has lasted the whole day and night.

When Mother Superior (Irene) came in to see me and asked, "Would you like to take advantage of this occasion, Sister, since Father An. (Andrasz) is coming to hear confessions?" I answered no. It seemed to me that Father would not understand me, nor would I be able to make a confession.

I spent the whole night with Jesus in Gethsemane. From my breast there escaped one continuous moan. A natural dying would be much easier, because then one is in agony and will die; whilst here, one is in agony, but cannot die. O Jesus, I never thought such suffering could exist. Nothingless: that is the reality. O Jesus, save me! I believe in You with all my heart. So many times have I seen the radiance of Your face, and now where are You Lord?....I believe, I believe, and again I believe in You, Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and in all the truths which Your holy Church gives me to believe...But the darkness does not recede, and my spirit plunges into even greater agony. And at that moment, such terrible torment overwhelmed me that now I am amazed at myself that I did not breathe my last, but this was only for a brief instant.

At that moment I saw Jesus, and from His Heart there issued those same two rays, which enveloped me whole and entire. At the same moment, all my torments vanished. My daughter, the Lord said, know that of yourself you are just what you have gone through, and it is only by My grace that you are a participant if eternal life and all the gifts I lavish on you. And with these words of the Lord, there came to me a true knowledge of myself. Jesus is giving me a lesson in deep humility and, at the same time, one of total trust in Him. My heart is reduced to dust and ashes, and even if all people were to trample me under their feet, I would still be consider that a favor.

I feel and am, in fact, very deeply permeated with the knowledge that I am nothing, so that real humiliations will be a refreshment for me.

 CATHOLIC  TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY

Show the American people what an abortion is!

                     (continued)

·                     I can not believe these abortion pictures. This is unreal, anyone who would do this to a little baby has the right to pay for what they are doing, and they will when they answer to God. If you can not accept the responsibility of having a child then you should not have sex. How could one person be so cruel so a harmless baby which has done nothing. This is so unreal I could not stand the thought of abortions and now that I actually saw pictures of how it was done and what the baby looks like just makes me sick, this should be stopped.

·                     Very disturbing images. I thought images of war were disturbing but what man does to an unborn child raises questions as to our (man's) sanity. To think that these images were of beautiful little children. Innocent children. It makes me almost embarrassed to be a human being. What have we come to? May GOD forgive us all for allowing these atrocities from taking place.

·                     It’s late evening and I have a dilemma, decided to look up these pictures and how heartbreaking it is to see these poor innocent lives being ended. As you can probably tell I’m 2 months pregnant and involved with a man who has become very uncaring towards myself and my baby. At this point I am confused as to what solution to take. It’s so difficult being a Catholic and knowing what the Bible says, but how could I do this to a child? I just wish there were easy answers to all the questions and doubts I have. I know I conceived this child in love, but is love enough? After seeing these pictures, it gives me some more things to think about. I just hope God leads me in the right path. Thank you for sharing these pictures so that we all could see what abortion is really like.

·                     Of anything I have ever seen, I have never seen anything as horribly cruel and blood chilling as the image of an aborted baby. It makes my heart cry out to them. If all women only knew! I praise God that your website is here to show the truth to everyone. I will continue to pray for your organization and I will especially pray for the end to the abominable practice of Abortion [From a 15-year old]

·                     I applaud you for putting these pictures out there for the public to see. Most people think abortion is just a mass of tissue that is removed, but these pictures show the true story. It is MURDER. These are perfectly formed human beings that are being killed.

·                     Yeah! Thank you for your "fiat"...I am so encouraged with priests for life...although every priest is a priest for life if he is Roman Catholic, it sometimes does not seem explicitly so. I love this site as a resource as well. I keep you in my prayers as well. (ps: I had a miscarriage with baby number 4 due to a cancer I didn’t know I had -yes, I am fine- but, it is amazing that some choose to abort! I looked at what my child looked like via your picture section at the time of his/her death...it was neat to see! Made me smile. Definitely I have another child in heaven. And, I think the photo section will help those who truly never realized what a baby looks like inside of you due to whatever reason.... Maybe even help legislation, we can only pray. God bless you and yours and your mothers.

More Comments from our Visitors Regarding the Graphic photos of Abortion on our Website

·                     I am a 31 year old mother of two girls ages 4 and 18 months and have another on the way. I just wanted to say that the pictures I saw on your site were worse than any horror movie I have ever seen. Those poor tiny babies were slaughtered like cattle. When I was in high school and especially college, I used to think that if I became pregnant then that I would definitely have an abortion. No question. As I grew older and then wanted children of my own, I knew that I could never have an abortion. Never. I wish that I hadn’t seen your site, because as a mother, it haunts me and breaks my heart. I do wish, however, that girls and/or women who walk into abortion clinics should have to see pictures like this before going through with the procedure. I’m sure many think as I did that it’s just a bunch of cells. NOT TRUE! I’m positive that most of those girls would think twice if they actually saw what was inside of them. A tiny human life. A true blessing from God.

·                     i seen your pictures, i cried. i have three beautiful children and wouldn't give anything for them. god blessed them to me. who ever can kill their baby by abortion or any kind of way is a very sick person. i am against abortions. keep up the good work and letting people know that it is wrong. god bless you.

·                     [In the May-June 2003 newsletter] the picture of "Behold your neighbor at only 8 weeks development" showed me the truth of the reality of life in the womb.

·                     I cried so hard when I saw these graphic images. I would like to know, how can people do abortions. I feel so sorry for the doctors that do these abortions. They are going to hell aren't they? I hope that they make abortion illegal. I am so sorry for the innocent children. I want children in the near future and I am so against abortion on any level.

·                     During the marriage I had 3 miscarriages and gave birth to these 2 boys. I have never agreed with abortion, but never took a stand either. After my miscarriages, and the births of my precious children, I wondered, no, I agonized over many things....how and why people could abuse their living children, and how could one abort a life because it was deemed inconvenient. I always knew that it must be a horrible sight, but never saw these types of images until, as I was researching Catholicism (I am considering converting), I came across your site. I literally cried out loud....my own children safely tucked in their beds....I had to go upstairs and look at them and touch them. And I prayed again for my 3 that were called back to God before they were born. I consider myself the mother to 5 children....3 were called away before I could see their faces. I will meet them one day, I’m sure. Please continue your mission to stop this horrible killing of innocents. I am now considering becoming a soldier in this war.....where once I thought that it was too stressful for a woman to see these images and face protestors in such a time of stress and doubt about their actions.. even though I didn’t agree with what they were doing, I was concerned about their mental suffering as well. My opinion of Pro-choice is this....and has been for awhile now.....the choice is not to engage in the behavior unless one is willing to take the responsibility for the child that may be conceived. Why does this helpless child have to suffer and die for others’ transgressions? The choice is to resist the behavior, or accept the responsibility of giving the life a chance to be.

·                     When I was confronted by the choice whether to have my baby aborted I chose without a single moment for life. I conceived in a violent way which was not of my own choice. I kept him and he is a continuous blessing. I had to cry and cry when I saw the pictures. It has made me even more scared of people. To think that mothers can do such a horrendous thing to children. Who will protect the little ones if they cannot even count on their own mothers to protect them. Please!!!! Keep up the fight against abortion. I am a scientist of religion and a full-time writer. I wish I could do more.

·                     Thank you!!! I have just gotten pregnant for the second time out of wedlock. I am saved but was thinking about abortion because I didn’t think I could handle it. This site is a LIFE SAVER. If more people could actually SEE and not just hear about it, abortions would decrease greatly if not cease! I’m going to believe that God can bring me through this pregnancy because HE will never leave me nor forsake me.

                           (to be continued)

From the inception of his pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is so horrific that words alone can never convey its meaning.

Fr. Frank serves on the board of the Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn from other social reform movements is being prepared.

We present here some of the grim reality of abortion. Only seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to this injustice.

These images are arranged according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist, Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted children.

It is especially critical to show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that the myth persists that they are not really children at all.

We thank all of you who have contacted us to tell us about how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others this horrible reality.

God, have mercy. Amen.·
