DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Thursday (7/16): "Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me"
Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest.29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and
lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light."
Meditation: What does the yoke of Jesus refer to in the
gospel? The Jews used the image of a yoke to express submission to God.
They spoke of the yoke of the law, the yoke of the commandments, the
yoke of the kingdom, the yoke of God. Jesus says his yoke is "easy". The
Greek word for "easy" can also mean "well-fitting". Yokes were
tailor-made to fit the oxen well. Oxen were yoked two by two. Jesus
invites us to be yoked with him, to unite our life with his life, our
will with his will, and our heart with his heart. To be yoked with Jesus
is to be united with him in a relationship of love, trust, and
obedience.
Jesus also says his "burden is light". There's a story of a man who
once met a boy carrying a smaller crippled lad on his back. "That's a
heavy load you are carrying there," exclaimed the man. "He ain't heavy;
he's my brother!" responded the boy. No burden is too heavy when it's
given in love and carried in love. When we yoke our lives with Jesus, he
also carries our burdens with us and gives us his strength to follow in
his way of love. Do you know the joy of resting in Jesus' presence and
walking daily with him along the path he has for you?
Jesus offers us a new kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. In
his kingdom sins are not only forgiven but removed, and eternal life is
poured out for all its citizens. This is not a political kingdom, but a
spiritual one. The yoke of Christ's kingdom, his kingly rule and way of
life, liberates us from the burden of guilt and from the oppression of
sinful habits and hurtful desires. Only Jesus can lift the burden of sin
and the weight of hopelessness from us. Jesus used the analogy of a yoke
to explain how we can exchange the burden of sin and despair for a
weight of glory and victory with him. The yoke which Jesus invites us to
embrace is his way of love, grace, and freedom from the power of sin. Do
you trust in God's love and submit to his will and plan for your life?
"Lord Jesus, inflame my heart with love for you and for your ways and
help me to exchange the yoke of rebellion for the yoke of submission to
your holy and loving word. Set me free from the folly of my own sinful
ignorance and rebellious pride that I may I wholly desire what is good
and in accord with your will."
Psalm 102:12-21
12 But thou, O LORD, art enthroned for ever; thy name endures to all
generations.
13 Thou wilt arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her;
the appointed time has come.
14 For thy servants hold her stones dear, and have pity on her dust.
15 The nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the
earth thy glory.
16 For the LORD will build up Zion, he will appear in his glory;
17 he will regard the prayer of the destitute, and will not despise
their supplication.
18 Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet
unborn may praise the LORD:
19 that he looked down from his holy height, from heaven the LORD looked
at the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were
doomed to die;
21 that men may declare in Zion the name of the LORD, and in Jerusalem
his praise,
22 when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the LORD.

Vietnamese Bishops Appeal for Catechesis Aid
Affirm Nation's Strong Faith, Many Vocations
KOENIGSTEIN, Germany, JULY 15, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Vietnamese bishops are affirming the strong faith and the high number of vocations among their Catholic countrymen, but are appealing for help in several church needs such as catechesis.
The prelates stated this in a visit to the Aid to the Church in Need headquarters in Koenigstein, the agency reported today.
The group of six bishops visited Germany Thursday while returning from their five-yearly visit to the Pope in Rome.
From different regions in Vietnam, each one gave a different perspective on the needs in their country.
Bishop Pierre Nguyên Van Nhon of Da Lat underlined the need for church buildings in his country.
The prelate, also chairman of the bishops' conference, noted that not every parish has its own building, which is a central need for pastoral and spiritual work.
Bishop Paul Bui Van Doc of My Tho, the chairman of the conference's faith commission, highlighted the work of evangelization as a priority.
He suggested that religious sisters be given motor scooters so that they could mobilize and travel to visit lay people in their area.
Evangelization was also stressed by Bishop Joseph Dang Duc Ngan of the diocese of Lang Son et Cao Bang, who underlined the need for solid formation for priests, religious and laity.
Successful catechesis
The 82-year-old bishop of Vinh, Bishop Paul Marie Cao Dinh Thuyen, explained that his diocese works with some 6,000 volunteer catechists, who brought the number of Catholic faithful to over 500,000.
These catechists, he reported, were trained in their villages by visiting priests and religious.
The importance of evangelizing through the families was affirmed by Bishop Thomas Nguyen Van Tan of Vinh Long.
He encouraged strengthening families and urging parents to bring their children to Mass and catechism classes.
The prelate pointed out that young people are being most severely affected by societal changes, and thus need solid foundations.
He added that many youth migrate from village to town for employment, and thus are in danger of "losing their roots" and "inner stability."
This viewpoint was supported by the bishop of Bac Ninh, Bishop Cosme Hoang Van Dat, who spoke about his diocese's pastoral work with children.
Now, he said, children are happy to tell their friends and families about the life of Jesus.
The aid agency reported that Vietnam, under communist rule, is one of their priority countries in Southeastern Asia.
The country has some 6 million Catholics in a total population of over 86 million.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah (northern
Israel) in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By
the 13th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel.” They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of
Mary. In 1726 it became a celebration of the universal Church under the
title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have
seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and
theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the
mystery of her Immaculate Conception.
St. Teresa of Avila (October 15) called Carmel “the Order of the
Virgin.” St. John of the Cross (December 14) credited Mary with saving
him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel and helping him
escape from prison. St. Theresa of the Child Jesus believed that Mary
cured her from illness. On her First Communion, she dedicated her life
to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary.
There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that Mary appeared to
St. Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular,
telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified
version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and
calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The
scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that
Mary models in a splendid way.
Comment:
The Carmelites were known from early on as “Brothers of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel.” The title suggests that they saw Mary not only as
“mother,” but also as “sister.” The word “sister” is a reminder that
Mary is very close to us. She is the daughter of God and therefore can
help us be authentic daughters and sons of God. She also can help us
grow in appreciation of being sisters and brothers to one another. She
leads us to a new realization that all human beings belong to the family
of God. When such a conviction grows, there is hope that the human race
can find its way to peace.
Quote:
“The various forms of piety toward the Mother of God, which the Church
has approved within the limits of sound and orthodox doctrine, according
to the dispositions and understanding of the faithful, ensure that while
the mother is honored, the Son through whom all things have their being
(cf. Colossians 1:15–16) and in whom it has pleased the Father that all
fullness should dwell (cf. Colossians 1:19) is rightly known, loved and
glorified and his commandments are observed” (Dogmatic Constitution
on the Church, 66).

CHAPTER VII.
THE PRESENTATION OF THE INFANT JESUS IN THE TEMPLE.
The ceremony of the presentation thus being over, the
great Lady kissed the hand of the priest and again asked his blessing.
The same She did also to Anne, her former teacher; for her dignity as
Mother of God, the highest possible to angels or men, did not prevent
Her from these acts of deepest humility. Then, in the company of saint
Joseph, her spouse, and of the fourteen thousand angels in procession,
She returned with the divine Infant to her lodging. They remained, as I
shall relate farther on, for some days in Jerusalem, in order to satisfy
their devotion and during that time She spoke a few times with the
priest about the mysteries of the Redemption and of the prophecies above
mentioned.
When the most holy Mary and glorious saint Joseph
returned from the presentation of the Infant Jesus in the temple, they
concluded to stay in Jerusalem for nine days in order to be able each
day to visit the temple and repeat the offering of the sacred Victim,
their divine Son, thus rendering fitting thanks for the immense blessing
for which they had been singled out from among all men. The heavenly
Lady had a special veneration for this number in memory of the nine
days, during which She had been prepared and adorned by God for the
incarnation of the Word, as I have related in the first ten chapters of
this second part; also in memory of the nine months, during which She
had borne Jesus in her virginal womb. In honor of these events She
wished make this novena with her divine Child, presenting Him that many
times to the eternal Father as an acceptable offering for her lofty
purposes. They began the devotions of the novena every day before the
third hour, praying in the temple until nightfall. They chose the most
obscure and retired place, meriting thereby the invitation of the master
of the banquet in the Gospel: "Friend, go up higher."
As an answer to her petitions He conceded to Her new
and great privileges, among which was also this one, that, as long as
the world should last, She should obtain all that She would ever ask for
her clients; that the greatest sinners, if they availed themselves of
her intercession, should find salvation; that in the new Church and law
of the Gospel She should be the Cooperatrix and Teacher of salvation
with Christ her most holy Son. This was to be her privilege especially
after his Ascension into heaven, when She should remain, as Queen of the
universe, as the representative and instrument of the divine power on
earth. This I will show more particularly in the third part of this
history. Many other favors and mysteries the Most High confirmed upon
the heavenly Mother in answer to her prayers. They, however, are beyond
the reach of spoken language, and cannot be described by my short and
limited terms.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
NOTEBOOK V
Second day. As I was
meditating on the sin of the Angels and their immediate punishment, I asked
Jesus why the Angels had been punished as soon as they had sinned. I heard a
voice: Because of their profound knowledge of
God. No person on earth, even though a great saint, has such knowledge of
God as an Angel has. Nevertheless, to me who am
so miserable, You have shown Your mercy, O God, and this, time and time
again. You carry me in the bosom of Your mercy and forgive me every time
that I ask Your forgiveness with a contrite heart.
Profound silence engulfs my soul. Not a single cloud hides the sun from me.
I lay myself entirely open to its rays, that His love may effect a complete
transformation in me. I want to come out of this retreat a saint, and this,
in spite of everything; that is to say, in spite of my wretchedness, I want
to become a saint, and I trust that God’s mercy can make a saint even out of
such misery as I am, because I am utterly in good will. In spite of all my
defeats, I want to go on fighting like a holy soul and to comport myself
like a holy soul. I will not be discouraged by anything, just as nothing can
discourage a soul who is holy. I want to live and die like a holy soul, with
my eyes fixed on You, Jesus, stretched out on the Cross, as the model for my
actions. I used to look around me for examples and found nothing which
sufficed, and I noticed that my state of holiness seemed so falter. But from
now on, my eyes are fixed on You, O Christ, who are for me the best of
guides. I am confident that You will bless my efforts.
In the mediations on sin, the Lord gave me to know all the malice of sin and
the ingratitude that is contained in it. I feel within my soul a great
aversion for even the smallest sin. However, the eternal truths I have been
meditating on do not bring even a shadow of disturbance or unrest in my
soul. And although I take them very much to heart, my contemplation is not
thereby interrupted. In this contemplation, it is not transports of the
heart that I experience, but a depth of peace and a wonderful silence.
Although my love is great, I experience an extraordinary equilibrium. Even
receiving the Eucharist causes no feeling, but brings me to a depth of union
where my love and God’s love are fused together as one.
Jesus has made known to me that I should pray for the sisters who are making
the retreat. During prayer, I learned of the struggle that some are
undergoing, and I redoubled my prayers.
In this profound silence, I am better able to judge the condition of my
soul. My soul is like clear water in which I can see everything: both my
misery and the vastness of God’s graces. And owing to this true knowledge of
itself, my spirit is strengthened in deep humility. I expose my heart to the
action of Your grace like a crystal exposed to the rays of the sun. May Your
image be reflected in it, O my God, to the extent that it is possible to be
reflected in the heart of a creature. Let your divinity radiate through me,
O You who dwell in my soul.
As I was praying before the Blessed Sacrament and greeting the five wounds
of Jesus, at each salutation I felt a torrent of graces gushing into my
soul, giving me a foretaste of heaven and absolute confidence in God’s
mercy.
As I write these words, I hear the cry of satan: “she’s writing everything,
she’s writing everything, and because of this we are losing so much! Do not
write about the goodness of God; He is just!” And howling with fury, he
vanished.
O merciful God, You do not despise us, but lavish Your graces on us
continuously. You make us fit to enter Your Kingdom, and in Your goodness
You grant that human beings may fill the places vacated by the ungrateful
angels. O God of great mercy, who turned Your Sacred gaze away from the
rebellious angels and turned it upon contrite man, praise and glory be to
Your unfathomable mercy, O God who do not despise the lowly heart.
My Jesus, despite these graces which You send upon me, I feel that my
nature, ennobled though it be, is not completely stilled; and so I keep a
constant watch. I must struggle with many faults, knowing well that it is
not the struggle which debases one, but cowardice and failure.
When one’s health is poor, there is much one has to bear. For when one is
ill, but not in bed, one is not considered to be ill. For many reasons,
therefore, there are constant occasions for sacrifices, and sometimes big
ones. I understand now that only in eternity will many things be revealed.
But I also understand that if God demands a sacrifice, He does not withhold
His grace, but gives it to the soul in abundance.
My Jesus, let my sacrifice burn before Your throne in all silence, but with
the full force of love, as I beg You to have mercy on souls.

Testimony of former abortionist
DR. ANTHONY LEVATINO
Posted with permission of the Pro-life Action League,
Chicago
(continued)
We were lucky. My wife and I were very fortunate because we had gone
through all the usual adoption agencies and social services and state
agencies trying to find our child. We ran up against one road block
after another, until I suddenly got the bright idea (and I don't know
why I didn't think of it sooner), that I know 45 obstetricians on a
first-name basis in this town. You can't tell me that one of them is not
going to have a baby available for a private adoption. So, we
advertised. We talked to every obstetrician in town and we struck pay
dirt. It still took four months. But one day we got a call. I was in the
operating room and I will never forget it--I was not doing an
abortion--I was assisting an attending gynecologist with an operation.
Somebody tapped me on the back of the shoulder and I turned around and
he said: Call so-and-so right away. That was all the message said, but I
just knew what it was. For us, we were very fortunate; we were blessed.
Three days later we had adopted a healthy little girl. We were
satisfied. We called her Heather.
After graduation, I went to Florida for a year. Nice weather, but it was
not a place for a young couple with young children--at least the place
where we had settled--so after a year, we left there. I think I did two
abortions all year and that's because there was an older population
there. There was not much of a demand, at least in the area that I was
in.
I found myself
back in the Albany area. We went back there because that was where our
roots were. My partner did D&E abortions. In fact, he was the referral
center for D&E abortions in the area. I had only done one D&E abortion
as a resident, and it was with him because he was, at the time, just
exploring the idea of doing it. Normally, the residents did not assist
the attending physicians when they did their abortions. I said, "Gee,
Bill, I would like to see just one of those things." He said, "Well ...
why don't you do it and I'll show you how it works, because it's
different; it's not like the other abortions. It's very different." No
more with this saline. You trade one kind of brutality for another. I
will tell you one thing about D&E, you never have to worry about a baby
being born alive. That's one positive aspect of it, perhaps, if you want
to put it that way. If any of you don't know what D&E is all
about, I am not going to describe it other than to say, as a doctor, you
are sitting there tearing, and I mean tearing--you need a lot of
strength to do it--arms and legs off of babies and putting them in a
stack on top of a table. If any of you don't know what a D&E is or what
it looks like, I am going to strongly refer you to Dr. Nathanson's film,
Eclipse of Reason. I think it is an absolutely superb piece of
work, and when that film is over, you are going to know what D&E is all
about.
As a resident, I did one D&E with my partner-to-be. I had no idea we
would be partners in the years to come. I started the procedure. I
followed his directions and in three minutes, I perforated the uterus.
It is very easy to do. We were able to complete the D&E and, except for
the infection she got afterwards, she did okay. I do believe that the
lady had some children afterwards, for which I am grateful. That was my
first experience with D&E.
So, I learned to do D&E abortions. Now I had a family of my own, and
there was no pressure to adopt a child anymore. As often happens,
although the books say it is not supposed to, (not that it is not
supposed to but it doesn't statistically make any difference) after we
adopted a child, after years of trying, we had a child of our own. So we
had a boy and a girl, and we were perfectly happy with that.
