DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION

Tuesday (12/15): "The tax collectors and harlots go into the kingdom of God before you"

Scripture: Matthew 21:28-32

28 "What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, `Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' 29 And he answered, `I will not'; but afterward he repented and went. 30 And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, `I go, sir,' but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

Old Testament Reading: Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13

1 Ah, soiled, defiled, oppressing city! 2 It has listened to no voice; it has accepted no correction. It has not trusted in the LORD; it has not drawn near to its God. 9 At that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him with one accord. 10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, my scattered ones, shall bring my offering. 11 On that day you shall not be put to shame because of all the deeds by which you have rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.12 For I will leave in the midst of you a people humble and lowly. They shall seek refuge in the name of the LORD-- 13 the remnant of Israel; they shall do no wrong and utter no lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. Then they will pasture and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.

Meditation: Jesus asks us a simple question: What do you think? Who will inherit the kingdom of heaven? Scripture warns that the proud and the haughty will fall, but the humble and lowly will be raised up. Pride leads to sin and rebellion. Humility leads to repentance and submission to the will of God. The prophets of Israel warned their people that unfaithfulness and disobedience would lead to their downfall – they would be scattered among the nations and lose everything that was once precious to them – their temple and holy city Jerusalem, their royal priesthood, their unity as a holy nation, and their covenant relationship with God as his chosen ones would be damaged as well. Israel suffered disgrace and lost hope of mercy and restoration. The prophet Zephaniah reminded his people that God would bring healing, pardon, and restoration to those who turned back to him with repentance and trust.

Jesus shocked the self-righteous Jews, who outwardly practiced the external rituals of their religion while inwardly harboring evil thoughts and intentions, by declaring that the tax collectors and harlots would enter the kingdom of God before them. Jesus illustrated his point with a simple story of two imperfect sons. The father amply provided for his sons everthing they needed – food, clothing, and shelter. He thought they would be grateful to work for him in exchange for his generous provision and care for them. He expected them to show their gratitude and respect through their obedience and diligence in tending his vineyard. Although the "rebellious" son told his father to his face that he would not work for him, he afterwards changed his mind and did what his father commanded him to do. The "good" son said he would work for his father, but didn't carry through. He did his own will contrary to his father's will. Now who was really the good son? Both sons disobeyed their father; but one repented and then did what the father told him.

Jesus makes his point clear: Good intentions are not enough. And promises don't count unless they are performed. God wants to change our hearts so that we will show by our actions that we respect his will and do it. God offers each of us the greatest treasure possible – unending peace, joy, happiness, and life with him in his kingdom. We can lose that treasure if we refuse the grace God offers us to follow in his way of truth, love, and righteousness. Jesus encourages us to think – to think about the consequences of our choices, especially the choices and decisions that will count not just for now but for eternity as well. The choices we make now will affect and shape our future, both our future on earth as well as in the life of the age to come. Are you ready to obey your heavenly Father and to choose for his kingdom of righteousness and peace?

"Lord Jesus, change my heart that I may desire to do whatever is pleasing to you. Help me to respect your will and give me the strength, joy, and perseverance to carry it out wholeheartedly."

Psalm 34:2-3, 6-7, 17-19, 22

2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
6 This poor soul cried, and was heard by the LORD, and was saved from every trouble.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD rescues them from them all.
22 The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

A Mother for the Civilization of Love

Interview With the Postulator of St. Juan Diego's Canonization Cause

By Omar Árcega

MEXICO CITY, DEC. 14, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The civilization of love has a mother -- Our Lady of Guadalupe -- who appeared and affirmed that she wanted to give all of her love, that is, Jesus Christ.

This observation was made by Monsignor Eduardo Chávez Sánchez, who was the postulator for the canonization of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatotoatzin. (St. Juan Diego was canonized by Pope John Paul II on July 31, 2002.)

Monsignor Chávez, who is the coordinator of an institute for studies on the apparition, and a canon at the Basilica of Guadalupe, spoke with ZENIT about Mary's appearance and message, and what she can give society today.

ZENIT: In what sense can it be said that Our Lady of Guadalupe has built [Mexican] national identity?

Monsignor Chávez: In my opinion, Mexico was forged on Dec. 12, 1531, because she embraced all that is the Indian and Spanish identity, and from here sent a message to the whole world; she spoke in Nahuatl and put her picture on a Nahuatl tilma. Her messenger, St. Juan Diego, was an Indian of Toltec mentality -- she took much from this mentality to give Jesus' message as the true, living God. She spoke to the whole world through the Indians, without neglecting the Spanish because she is the Immaculate Conception that Spaniards understood perfectly well; she is a woman of Advent, also perfectly understood by them; we know that the Iberians celebrated the octave of the Immaculate Conception at the time of her apparition.

So she forges a new identity combining the Spanish and Indian world-visions. She sent the fruit to the whole world, that is why John Paul II called her the perfectly inculturated model of this evangelization.

ZENIT: Why is it said that the Virgin of Guadalupe is the Mother of the civilization of love?

Monsignor Chávez: She gave birth to the civilization of love because when she said to Juan Diego, "I want a little sacred house" she was talking about a church, but also about the family, that is, she spoke about the Church. Our Lady of Guadalupe said very clearly: I want to give all my love and that love is Jesus Christ. In other words, she wanted the construction not only of a material church but of the new civilization where Jesus Christ is the center, that is, love. For all these reasons, she is the forger of the civilization of love.

ZENIT: Is it correct to call her an Indian Virgin?

Monsignor Chávez: Yes, if one takes into account some elements. But what is most correct is what John Paul II said: she is the mestizo Virgin. John XXIII had already said this: her face is mestizo, she is the integration of all races, she is the mother of all human beings, of all peoples, that is why she said to Juan Diego: "I am your mother and mother of all the most varied races," hence, she is mother of all human beings.

ZENIT: What could be the impact of Marian values on the North American mentality?

Monsignor Chávez: Catholicism in the United States is lived with great intensity, because it isn't a majority religion there, so that it makes Catholics more faithful and practicing. One is a Catholic because one really lives it, and not because of mere tradition. On the other hand, the Catholic Church comes with the banner of Holy Mary, very especially under her name of Guadalupe. Thus a Church where the Virgin Mary is venerated is a place where the one living and true God is adored, that is why she has much force in the United States. As a result, there is a real impact of Marian values on North American society.

ZENIT: Is Our Lady of Guadalupe a symbol of unity between cultures?

Monsignor Chávez: Indeed, she is a sign of unity of all cultures. And what is that unity? Love. A Chinaman, a European, an African -- we all need love, we want to live in love. That is why John Paul II saw it so clearly that he called her: Mother of America, Patroness of America; no longer "the Americas" in plural because one realizes that in love there are no borders. We are all God's children and have the same dignity.

ZENIT: What does 13 Reed mean for the Aztec mentality and how is it related to the Virgin of Guadalupe?

Monsignor Chávez: It is a date that for them meant the beginning of a new era. In the codex of the foundation of Mexico the first thing they put is the marking 13 Reed, which means "a new civilization begins."

In the Aztec calendar also the central designation at the top is the 13 Reed, a new cycle. As [Miguel] León-Padilla says, it symbolizes the way to the house of wisdom, to the house of light; it is a new day and divine wisdom. The year 1531 in the European calendar coincides with the 13th Reed in the indigenous calendar, for them the fact that the Virgin of Guadalupe had this meeting with human beings means that a new era is beginning full of divine wisdom.

ZENIT: What does Our Lady of Guadalupe transmit to present-day society in terms of values?

Monsignor Chávez: Above all, humility. She chose Juan Diego and his most important characteristic was humility, simplicity. She too is humble. She said, "Let is be done unto me according to your word, I am your handmaid," in the same way that St. Elizabeth did when she received the Virgin's visit: "Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to see me?" And as John the Baptist who said: "I am not the one who should shine, he it is who must shine, I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals." All this is humility. Sin comes to the human heart because of pride.

ZENIT: How did Juan Diego's Toltec mentality influence the reception of the Guadalupe message?

Monsignor Chávez: Toltec culture was like fertile earth for the reception of the message. They had come to believe in one God: Tloquenahuaque. They even called him the hidden God. To come to the idea of one God with the sole force of reason is frustrating because there is evil in the world and this reality cannot be explained. Netzahualcoyotl cried out to him: "I want to sing your flowers Tloquenahuaque but you are very far away and do not care about the human being."

That is why when the Virgin of Guadalupe meets with Juan Diego and says to him "I am the mother of Tloquenahuaque" -- it should be made clear that it was not about an idol -- it is a characteristic of the living God, Juan Diego understand perfectly that it was the only God, who is not far away, who does not make fun of him. However, from the beginning of seeing her he always knew that she was the mother of Jesus because he said to her, "I am going to Tlatelolco to receive catechism from your priests." He did not confuse her with an idol; he understood perfectly that Mary is the Mother of Jesus.

ZENIT: What role should Our Lady of Guadalupe have in the celebrations of the bicentenary of the independence of many Latin American countries, among them, Mexico?

Monsignor Chávez: A very important one because she is the one who forges a whole nation. But I see greater transcendence from this homeland: We have a responsibility vis-a-vis the whole world, we must be those instruments of God, through the Virgin of Guadalupe, to be a civilization of love in the whole world.

DAILY LITURGICAL SAINT

Blessed Mary Frances Schervier

(1819-1876)

This woman who once wanted to become a Trappistine nun was instead led by God to establish a community of sisters who care for the sick and aged in the United States and throughout the world.

Born into a distinguished family in Aachen (then ruled by Prussia but formerly Aix-la-Chapelle, France), Frances ran the household after her mother’s death and established a reputation for generosity to the poor. In 1844 she became a Secular Franciscan. The next year she and four companions established a religious community devoted to caring for the poor. In 1851 the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis (a variant of the original name) were approved by the local bishop; the community soon spread. The first U.S. foundation was made in 1858.

Mother Frances visited the United States in 1863 and helped her sisters nurse soldiers wounded in the Civil War. She visited the United States again in 1868. When Philip Hoever was establishing the Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis, she encouraged him.

When Mother Frances died, there were 2,500 members of her community worldwide. The number has kept growing. They are still engaged in operating hospitals and homes for the aged. Mother Mary Frances was beatified in 1974.

Comment:

The sick, the poor and the aged are constantly in danger of being considered "useless" members of society and therefore ignored—or worse. Women and men motivated by the ideals of Mother Frances are needed if the God-given dignity and destiny of all people are to be respected.

Quote:

In 1868, Mother Frances wrote to all her sisters, reminding them of Jesus’ words: “You are my friends if you do what I command you.... I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another” (John 15:14,17)

She continued: “If we do this faithfully and zealously, we will experience the truth of the words of our father St. Francis who says that love lightens all difficulties and sweetens all bitterness. We will likewise partake of the blessing which St. Francis promised to all his children, both present and future, after having admonished them to love one another even as he had loved them and continues to love them.”

THE DIVINE HISTORY AND LIFE

OF THE

VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD

CHAPTER XIX.
PILATE; SENDS THE JEWS WITH JESUS AND THEIR AC
CUSATIONS TO HEROD, WHERE THEY ADVANCE THEIR
CHARGES; HEROD TREATS JESUS WITH CONTEMPT AND
SENDS HIM BACK TO PILATE; MARY FOLLOWS THE
SAVIOR; OTHER HAPPENINGS IN CONNECTION.

603. One of the accusations of the Jews and the priests
before Pilate was, that Jesus our Savior had begun to
stir up the people by his preaching in the province of
Galilee (Luke 23, 6). This caused Pilate to inquire,
whether He was a Galileean; and as they told him, that
Jesus was born and raised in that country, he thought
this circumstance useful for the solution of his difficulties
in regard to Jesus and for escaping the molestations of
the Jews, who so urgently demanded his death. Herod
was at that time in Jerusalem, celebrating the Pasch of
the Jews. He was the son of the first Herod, who had
murdered the Innocents to procure the death of Jesus
soon after his birth (Matth 2, 16). This murderer had
become a proselyte of the Jews at the time of his mar
riage with a Jewish woman. On this account his son
Herod likewise observed the law of Moses, and he had
come to Jerusalem from Galilee, of which he was gover
nor. Pilate was at enmity with Herod, for the two
governed the two principal provinces of Palestine,
namely, Judea and Galilee, and a short time before it had
happened that Pilate, in his zeal for the supremacy of
the Roman empire, had murdered some Galileeans dur
ing a public function in the temple, mixing the blood
of the insurgents with that of the holy sacrifices. Herod
was highly incensed at this sacrilege, and Pilate, in order
to afford him some satisfaction without much trouble
to himself, resolved to send to him Christ the Lord to
be examined and judged as one of the subjects of
Herod s sway. Pilate also expected that Herod would
set Jesus free as being innocent and a Victim of the
malice and envy of the priests and scribes.
604. Christ our Lord therefore went forth from the
house of Pilate to the palace of Herod, being still bound
and chained as before and accompanied by the scribes
and priests as his accusers. There were also a large
number of soldiers and servants, who dragged Him along
by the ropes and cleared the streets, which had been
filled with multitudes of the people to see the spectacle.
The military broke their way through the crowds; and
as the servants and priests were thirsting so eagerly for
the blood of the Savior and wished to shed it on this very
day, they hastened with the Lord through the streets
nearly on a run and with great tumult. Mary also set
forth from the house of Pilate with her company in
order to follow her sweetest Son Jesus and accompany
Him on the ways, which He was still to go until his
death on the Cross. It would not have been possible for
the Lady to follow her Beloved closely enough to be
in his sight, if She had not ordered her holy angels to
open a way for Her. They made it possible for Her to
be constantly near lier Son, so that She could enjoy his
presence, though that also brought with it only a fuller
participation in all torments and sorrows. She obtained
the fulfillment of all her wishes; for walking along
through the streets near the Savior She saw and heard
the insults of the servants, the blows they dealt Him,
the reproaches of the people, expressed either as their
own or repeated from hearsay.

605. When Herod was informed that Pilate would
send Jesus of Nazareth to him, he was highly pleased. He
knew that Jesus was a great friend of John the Baptist,
whom he had ordered to be put to death (Mark 6, 27),
and had heard many reports of his preaching. In vain
and foolish curiosity he harbored the desire of seeing
Jesus do something new and extraordinary for his en
tertainment and wonder (Luke 23, 8). The Author of
life therefore came into the presence of the murderer
Herod, against whom the blood of the Baptist was call
ing more loudly to this same Lord for vengeance, than
in its time the blood of Abel (Gen. 4, 10). But the un
happy adulterer, ignorant of the terrible judgment of the
Almighty, received Him with loud laughter as an en
chanter and conjurer. In this dreadful misconception he
commenced to examine and question Him, persuaded
that he could thereby induce Him, to work some miracle
to satisfy his curiosity. But the Master of wisdom, and
prudence, standing with an humble reserve before his
most unworthy judge, answered him not a word. For
on account of his evil-doing he well merited the pun
ishment of not hearing the words of life, which he would
certainly have heard if he had been disposed to listen to
them with reverence.

DIVINE MERCY

Chosen Souls

So I turn to you, you - chosen souls, will you also fail to understand the love of My Hear? Here, too, My Heart finds disappointment; I do not find complete surrender to My love. So many reservations, si much distrust, so much caution. To comfort you, let Me tell you that there are souls living in the world who love Me dearly. I dwell in their hearts with delight. But they are few. In convents too, there are souls that fill My Heart with joy. They bear My features; therefore the Heavenly father looks upon them with special pleasure. They will be marvels to Angels and men. Their number is very small. They are a defense for the world before the justice of the Heavenly Father and a means of obtaining mercy for the world. The love and sacrifice of these souls sustain the world in existence. The infidelity of a soul specially chosen by Me wounds My heart most painfully. Such infidelities are swords which pierce My Heart. (367)

My Heart if sorrowful... because even chosen souls do not understand the greatness of My mercy. Their relationship [with Me] is, in certain ways, imbued with mistrust. Oh, how much that wounds My Heart! remember My Passion, and if you do not believe My words, at least believe My Wounds. (379)

When I approached the altar and began to meditate on the Passion of the Lord Jesus, a terrible pain immediately filled my soul because of the ingratitude of so many souls living in the world; but particularly painful was the ingratitude of souls especially chosen by God. There is no notion of comparison [which can describe it]. ... Each time I thought of God's great mercy and of the ingratitude of souls, pain stabbed at my heart, and I understood how painfully it wounded the sweetest Heart of Jesus. With a burning heart, I renewed my act of self-oblation on behalf of sinners. (384)

The Lord gave me to know who it is that upholds the existence of mankind: it is the chosen souls. When the number of the chosen souls is complete, the world will cease to exist. (926)

Today, the Lord gave me knowledge of His anger toward mankind which deserves to have its days shortened because of its sins. But I learned that the world's existence is maintained by chosen souls; that is, the religious orders. Woe to the world when there will be a lack of religious orders! (1434)

Why are You sad today, Jesus? Tell me, who is the cause of Your sadness? And Jesus answered me, Chosen souls who do not have My spirit, who live according to the letter [cf. 2 Cor. 3:6] and have placed the letter above My spirit, above the spirit of love. I have founded My whole law on love, and yet I do not see love, even in religious orders. This is why sadness fills My Heart. (1478)

I saw the anger of God hanging heavy over Poland. And now I see that if God were to visit our country with the greatest chastisements, that would still be great mercy because, for such grave transgressions, He could punish us with eternal annihilation. I was paralysed with fear when the Lord lifted the veil a little for me. Now I see clearly that chosen souls keep the world in existence to fulfil the measure [of justice]. (1533)

Chosen souls are, in My hand, lights which I cast into the darkness of the world and with which I illumine it. As stars illumine the night, so chosen souls illumine the earth. And the more perfect a soul is, the stronger and the more far-reaching is the light shed by it. It can be hidden and unknown, even to those closest to it, and yet its holiness is reflected in souls even to the most distant extremities of the world. (1601)

Write for the benefit of religious souls that it delights Me to come to their hearts in Holy Communion. But if there is anyone else in such a heart, I cannot bear it and quickly leave that heart, taking with Me all the gifts and graces I have prepared for the soul. And the soul does not even notice My going. After some time, inner emptiness and dissatisfaction will come to her attention. Oh, if only she would turn to Me then, Would help her to cleanse her heart, and I would fulfil everything in her soul; but without her knowledge and consent, I cannot be the Master of her heart. (1683)

.the Lord Jesus began to complain about the ...lack of love in chosen souls.....[Love] has been banished from convents. Souls without love and without devotion, souls full of egoism and self-love, souls full of pride and arrogance, souls full of deceit and hypocrisy, lukewarm souls who have just enough warmth to keep them alive: My heart cannot bear this. All the graces that I pour out upon them flow off them as off the face of a rock. I cannot stand them , because they are neither good nor bad. I called convents into being to sanctify the world through them. It is from them that a powerful flame of love and sacrifice should burst forth. And if they do not repent and become enkindled by their first love, I will deliver them over to the fate of this world... How can they sit on the promised throne of judgment to judge the world, when their guilt is greater than the guilt of the world? There is neither penance nor atonement. O heart, which received Me in the morning and at noon are all ablaze with hatred against Me, were you chosen for this, to give Me more pain? The great sins of the world are superficial wounds on My Heart, but the sins of a chosen soul pierce My Heart through and through..[Sr. Faustina records her tears which ensued as she reflected on what Jesus had said] Do not cry. There are still a great number of souls who love Me very much, but My Heart desires to be loved by all and, because My love is great, that is why I warn and chastise them. (1702-3)

 CATHOLIC  TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY

Explanation of the Ten Rules of Life

2. I will discern between God and God's works

Alone in my prison cell, I continued to be tormented by the fact that I was forty-eight years old, in the prime of my life, that I had worked for eight years as a bishop and gained so much pastoral experience and there I was isolated, inactive and far from my people...(1700km)

One night, from the depths of my heart I could hear a voice advising me:
"Why torment yourself? You must discern between God and the works of God. Everything you have done and desire to continue to do, pastoral visits, training seminarians, sisters and members of religious orders, building schools, evangelizing non-Christians. All of that is excellent work, the work of God but it is not God! If God wants you to give all up and put the work into his hands, do it and trust him. God will do the work infinitely better than you; he will entrust the work to others who are more able than you. You have only to choose God and not the works of God!"

This light totally changed my way of thinking. When the Communist put me in the hold of the boat, the Hai-Phong along with 1500 other prisoners and moved us to the north, I said to myself, "here is my cathedral, here are the people God has given me to care for, here is my mission: to ensure the presence of God among these, my despairing, miserable brothers. It is God's will that I am here. I accept his will". And from that minute onwards, a new peace filled my heart and stayed with me for thirteen years.
