DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Tuesday (6/23): "Do not throw your pearls
before swine"
Scripture: Matthew 7:6,12-14
6 "Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls
before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack
you.
12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for
this is the law and the prophets. 13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for
the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and
those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the
way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Meditation: Why does Jesus contrast pearls and holiness with dogs
and swine? Pearls were of very great value and even considered
priceless. The same with holiness because God is all-holy and he invites
us to share in his holiness which is very precious and priceless as
well. The Talmud, a rabbinic commentary on the Jewish Scriptures, has a
proverbial saying for something which is inconguous or out of place:
an ear-ring in a swine’s snout. Jesus' expression about "pearls
before swine" and "not giving dogs what is holy" is very similar in
thought (Matthew 7:6). Jesus’ concern here is not with exclusivity
(excluding other people from our love, care, and concern), but with
purity – the purity of the faith which has been entrusted to us by an
all-holy and all-wise God. The early church referenced this expression
with the Eucharist or the Lord’s Table. In the liturgy of the early
church, a proclamation was given shortly before communion: Holy
things to the holy. The Didache, a first century church manual
stated: Let no one eat or drink of your Eucharist except those
baptised into the name of the Lord; for, as regards this, the Lord has
said, 'Give not that which is holy unto dogs.' The Lord Jesus
invites us to his table, but we must approach worthily.
Jesus summed up the teaching of the Old Testament law and prophets –
So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them
(Matthew 7:12) – and in the same breath he raised it to a new level of
perfection and fulfillment. The law of love requires more than simply
avoiding injury or harm to one's neighbor. Perfect love – a love which
is unconditional and which reaches out to all – always seeks the good of
others for their sake and gives the best we can offer for their welfare.
When we love our neighbors and treat them in the same way we wish to be
treated by God and by others, then we fulfill the law and the prophets,
namely what God requires of us – loving God with all that we have and
are and loving our neighbor as ourselves. How can we love our neighbor
selflessly and and show them kindness and concern for their welfare? If
we empty our hearts of all unkind and unloving thoughts and sentiments,
then there will only be room for kindness, goodness, charity, and mercy.
Paul the Apostle reminds us that "God's love has been poured into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us" (Romans 5:5).
It is the love of God that fuels our unconditional love for others. Are
you ready to let the Holy Spirit transform your life with the purifying
fire of God's love?
Jesus uses an image (Matthew 7:13-14) which is common in the Old
Testament: choosing between two divergent ways or paths – the way that
leads to fulfillment and life versus the way that leads to destruction
and death. The Book of Psalms begins with an image of a person who has
chosen to follow the way of those who are wise and obedient to God's
word and who refuse to follow the way of those who think and act
contrary to God's law : Blessed is the man who walks not in the
counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the
seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his
law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:1-2). When a path diverges,
such as a fork in the road, each way leads to a different destination.
This is especially true when we encounter life’s crossroads where we
must make a choice that will affect how we will live our lives. Do the
choices you make help you move towards the goal of loving God and
obeying his will? The Lord gives us freedom to choose which way we will
go. Ask him for the wisdom to know which way will lead to life rather
than to death and destruction. See, I have set before you this day
life and good, death and evil. ...Therefore choose life that you and
your descendants may live (Deuteronmy 3:15-20). Choose this day
whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15). Behold I set before you the
way of life and the way of death (Jeremiah 21:8). If we allow God's
love and wisdom to rule our hearts, then we can trust in his guidance
and grace to follow the path of love and holiness.
"Let me love you, my Lord and my God, and see myself as I really am –
a pilgrim in this world, a Christian called to respect and love all
whose lives I touch, those in authority over me or those under my
authority, my friends and my enemies. Help me to conquer anger with
gentleness, greed by generosity, apathy by fervor. Help me to forget
myself and reach out towards others." (Prayer attributed
to Clement XI of Rome)
Psalm 48:1-10
1 Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our
God! His holy mountain,
2 beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in
the far north, the city of the great King.
3 Within her citadels God has shown himself a sure defense.
4 For lo, the kings assembled, they came on together.
5 As soon as they saw it, they were astounded, they were in panic, they
took to flight;
6 trembling took hold of them there, anguish as of a woman in travail.
7 By the east wind thou didst shatter the ships of Tarshish.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in
the city of our God, which God establishes for ever. [Selah]
9 We have thought on thy steadfast love, O God, in the midst of thy
temple.
10 As thy name, O God, so thy praise reaches to the ends of the earth.
Thy right hand is filled with victory;

Papal Words to Priests, Youth at Padre Pio Church
"Love for Christ Is Inevitably Linked to Love for His Church"
SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, Italy, JUNE 21, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the address Benedict XVI gave today to priests, religious and youth at the Church of San Pio de Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo, where he is visiting today.
* * *
Dear priests,
Dear men and women religious,
Dear young people,
With this our encounter my pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo comes to a close. I am grateful to the Archbishop of Lecce, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese, Archbishop Domenico Umberto D'Ambrosio, and to Father Mauro Jöhri, secretary general of the Capuchin Friars Minor, for the words of cordial welcome that they have given me on your behalf. My greeting is now turned to you, dear priests, who are daily engaged in the service of God's people as wise guides and diligent workers in the vineyard of the Lord. I greet with affection the dear consecrated persons, called to offer the testimony of a total dedication to Christ through the faithful practice of the evangelical counsels. A special thought for you, dear Capuchin Friars, who lovingly care for this oasis of spirituality and evangelical solidarity, welcoming pilgrims and devotees gathered by the living memory of your holy confrere, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Thank you very much for this valuable service you render to the Church and to souls who here rediscover the beauty of faith and the warmth of divine tenderness. I greet you, dear young people, to whom the Pope looks with confidence as to the future of the Church and society. Here in San Giovanni Rotondo, everything speaks of the sanctity of a humble friar and a zealous priest, who this evening, also invites us to open our hearts to the mercy of God; he exhorts us to be holy, that is, sincere and true friends of Jesus.
Dear priests, just the other day, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the day of priestly holiness, we began the Priestly Year, during which we will recall with reverence and affection the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Mary Vianney, the holy Curé d'Ars. In the letter I wrote for the occasion, I wanted to stress the importance of the sanctity of priests for the life and mission of the Church. Like the Curé d'Ars, Padre Pio also reminds us of the dignity and responsibility of the priestly ministry. Who was not impressed by the fervor with which he re-lived the Passion of Christ in every celebration of the Eucharist? From his love for the Eucharist there arose in him as the Curé d'Ars a total willingness to welcome the faithful, especially sinners. Also, if St. John Mary Vianney, in a troubled and difficult time, tried in every way, to help his parishioners rediscover the meaning and the beauty of sacramental penance, for the holy friar of the Gargano, the care of souls and the conversion of sinners were a desire that consumed him until death. How many people have changed their lives thanks to his patient priestly ministry, so many long hours in the confessional! Like the Curé d'Ars, it is his ministry as a confessor that constitutes the greatest title of glory and the distinctive feature of this holy Capuchin. How could we not realize then the importance of participating in the celebration of the Eucharist devoutly and frequently receiving the sacrament of confession? In particular, the sacrament of penance must be even more valued, and priests should never resign themselves to seeing their confessional deserted or to merely recognizing the diffidence of the faithful for this extraordinary source of serenity and peace.
There is another great lesson that we can learn from the life of Padre Pio: the value and necessity of prayer. To whomever that would ask him about himself, he used to reply: "I am nothing but a poor friar who prays." And he really did pray always and everywhere with humility, confidence and perseverance. Here is a key point not only for the spirituality of the priest, but also that of every Christian, and even more for you, dear men and women religious, chosen to follow Christ more closely through the practice of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Sometimes one can become taken by a certain discouragement before the weakening and even the abandonment of faith that exists in our societies. Surely we must find new channels to communicate the message of the Gospel to the men and women of our time, but since the essence of the Christian message is always the same, it is necessary to return to its original source, to Jesus Christ who is "the same yesterday and today and forever "(Hebrews 13:8). The human and spiritual life of Padre Pio teaches that only a soul intimately united to the Crucified will be able to transmit even to those who are far away the joy and richness of the Gospel.
Love for Christ is inevitably linked to love for his Church, guided and animated by the power of the Holy Spirit, in which each of us has a role and a mission to accomplish. Dear priests, dear men and women religious, different are the tasks which are entrusted to you and the charisms of which are you are interpreters, but may the spirit with which implement them be always one, so that your presence and your work within the Christian people, become an eloquent witness to the primacy of God in your life. Was not this what everyone perceived in St. Pio of Pietrelcina?
Permit me to speak a special word to the young people, which I see are so many and so enthusiastic. Dear friends, thank you for your warm welcome and for the heartfelt sentiments your representative has expressed. I noticed that the pastoral plan of your diocese, for the years 2007-2010, devotes much attention to the mission regarding youth and family and I am sure that from this attitude of listening, encounter, dialogue and verification in which you are committed, there will result an ever better care of families and a timely hearing of the actual expectations of the younger generation. I have present in mind the problems facing you, dear young men and women, and which threaten to stifle the enthusiasms typical of your youth. Among these, in particular, I mention the phenomenon of unemployment, which affects so many tragic young men and women from Southern Italy. Do not lose heart! Be "young people of great heart," as it has been repeated often this year since the Diocesan Youth Mission, animated and guided by the Regional Seminary of Molfetta last September. The Church does not abandon you. Do not abandon the Church!
Your input is necessary in order to build living Christian communities, and societies that are more just and open to hope. And if you want to have "great hearts," seek the school of Jesus. Just the other day we contemplated his heart, great and full of love for humanity. He will never abandon or betray your trust, he will never lead down mistaken paths. Just like Padre Pio, be faithful friends of the Lord Jesus, cultivating a daily relationship through prayer and through listening to his word, the diligent practice of the sacraments and the cordial membership in his family, which is the Church. This must be the basis of the program of life of each of you, dear young people, as well as you, dear priests and of you, dear men and women religious. To each and every one of you I assure my prayers and implore the maternal protection of Holy Mary of Grace, who watches over you from her shrine in which crypt lie the remains of Padre Pio. I thank you very much, yet again, for your welcome and I bless you all, together with your families, communities, parishes and your entire diocese.

DAILY LITURGICAL SAINT |
|
June 23, 2009

St. John Fisher

(1469-1535)
John Fisher is usually associated with Erasmus, Thomas More and other
Renaissance humanists. His life, therefore, did not have the external
simplicity found in the lives of some saints. Rather, he was a man of
learning, associated with the intellectuals and political leaders of his
day. He was interested in the contemporary culture and eventually became
chancellor at Cambridge. He had been made a bishop at 35, and one of his
interests was raising the standard of preaching in England. Fisher
himself was an accomplished preacher and writer. His sermons on the
penitential psalms were reprinted seven times before his death. With the
coming of Lutheranism, he was drawn into controversy. His eight books
against heresy gave him a leading position among European theologians.
In
1521 he was asked to study the problem of Henry VIII’s marriage. He
incurred Henry’s anger by defending the validity of the king’s marriage
with Catherine of Aragon and later by rejecting Henry’s claim to be the
supreme head of the Church of England.
In
an attempt to be rid of him, Henry first had him accused of not
reporting all the “revelations” of the nun of Kent, Elizabeth Barton.
John was summoned, in feeble health, to take the oath to the new Act of
Succession. He and Thomas More refused because the Act presumed the
legality of Henry’s divorce and his claim to be head of the English
Church. They were sent to the Tower of London, where Fisher remained 14
months without trial. They were finally sentenced to life imprisonment
and loss of goods.
When the two were called to further interrogations, they remained
silent. Fisher was tricked, on the supposition he was speaking privately
as a priest, and declared again that the king was not supreme head. The
king, further angered that the pope had made John Fisher a cardinal, had
him brought to trial on the charge of high treason. He was condemned and
executed, his body left to lie all day on the scaffold and his head hung
on London Bridge. More was executed two weeks later.
Comment:
Today many questions are raised about Christians' and priests' active
involvement in social issues. John Fisher remained faithful to his
calling as a bishop. He strongly upheld the teachings of the Church; the
very cause of his martyrdom was his loyalty to Rome. He was involved in
the cultural enrichment circles as well as in the political struggles of
his time. This involvement caused him to question the moral conduct of
the leadership of his country. "The Church has the right, indeed the
duty, to proclaim justice on the social, national and international
level, and to denounce instances of injustice, when the fundamental
rights of man and his very salvation demand it" (Justice in the World,
1971 Synod of Bishops).
Quote:
Erasmus said of John Fisher: "He is the one man at this time who is
incomparable for uprightness of life, for learning and for greatness of
soul."

CHAPTER III.
THE JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM.
WORDS OF THE QUEEN.
My dearest daughter, if thou art of a meek and docile
heart, these mysteries which thou hast written about and hast
understood, will stir within thee sweet sentiments of love and affection
toward the Author of such great wonders. I wish that, bearing them in
mind, thou from this day on embrace with new and great esteem the
contempt and neglect of the world. And tell me, dearest, if, in exchange
for this forgetfulness and scorn of the world, God look upon thee with
eyes of sweetest love, why shouldst thou not buy so cheaply what is
worth an infinite price? What can the world give thee, even when it
esteems thee and exalts thee most ? And what dost thou lose, if thou
despise it? Is its favor not all vanity and deceit (Ps. 4, 3)? Is it not
all a fleeting and momentary shadow, which eludes the grasp of those
that haste after it? Hence, if thou hadst all worldly advantage in thy
possession, what great feat would it be to despise it as of no value?
Consider how little thou dost in rejecting all of it for the love of
God, for mine and that of the holy angels. And if the world does not
neglect thee as much as thou shouldst desire, do thou on thy own behalf
despise it, in order to remain free and unhampered to enjoy to the full
extent the highest Good with the plenitude of his most delightful love
and intercourse.
My most holy Son is such a faithful Lover of souls
that He hast set me as the teacher and living example of the love of
humility and true contempt of worldly vanity and pride. He ordained also
for his own glory as well as for my sake that I, his Servant and Mother,
should be left without shelter and be turned away by mortals, in order
that afterwards his beloved souls might be so much the more readily
induced to offer Him a welcome, thus obliging Him, by an artifice of
love, to come and remain with them. He also sought destitution and
poverty, not because He had any need of them for bringing the practice
of virtues to the highest perfection, but in order to teach mortals the
shortest and surest way for reaching the heights of divine love and
union with God.
Thou knowest well, my dearest, that thou hast been
incessantly instructed and exhorted by divine enlightenment to forget
the terrestrial and visible and gird thyself with foritude (Prov. 31,
17), to raise thyself to the imitation of me, copying in thyself,
according to thy capacity, the works and virtues manifested to thee in
my life. This is the very first purpose of the knowledge which thou
receivest in writing this history thou hast in me a perfect model, and
by it thou canst arrange the converse and conduct of thy life in the
same manner as I arranged mine in imitation of my sweetest Son. The
dread with which this command to imitate me has inspired thee as a being
above thy strength, thou must moderate and thou must encourage thyself
by the words of my most holy Son in the Gospel of saint Matthew: "Be ye
perfect as my heavenly Father is perfect" (Matth. 5, 8). This command of
the Most High imposed upon his holy Church is not impossible of
fulfillment, and, if his faithful children on their part dispose
themselves properly, He will deny to none of them the grace of attaining
this resemblance to the heavenly Father. All this my most holy Son has
merited for them. But the degrading forgetfulness and neglect of men
hinder them from maturing within themselves the fruits of his
Redemption.
Of thee particularly I expect this perfection, and I
invite thee to it by the sweet law of love which accompanies my
instruction. Ponder and scrutinize, by the divine light, the obligation
under which I place thee, and labor to correspond with it like a
faithful and anxious child. Let no difficulty or hardship disturb thee,
nor deter thee from any virtuous exercise, no matter how hard it may be.
Nor be content with striving after the love of God and salvation of
thyself alone; if thou wouldst be perfect in imitating me and fulfilling
all that the Gospel teaches, thou must work for the salvation of other
souls and the exaltation of the holy name of my Son, making thyself an
instrument in his powerful hands for the accomplishment of mighty works
to advance his pleasure and glory.

DIVINE MERCY
|

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook IV
Today, the 29th, I received permission to
have a longer conversation with Rev. Dr. Sopocko. I learned that, although
there are difficulties, the work is moving ahead, and that the feast of
Mercy is already far advanced. It will not be long now before it becomes a
reality, but much prayer is still needed to bring an end to certain
difficulties.
“As concerns yourself, sister, it is good that you are remaining in a state
of holy indifference in everything that pertains to the will of God, and
that you are better maintaining a state of equilibrium. Please do your best
to keep this equanimity. Now, as regards all these matters, you are to
depend exclusively on Father Andrasz; I am in complete agreement with him.
Do nothing on your own, sister, but in all matters take counsel from your
spiritual director. I beg you to keep your levelheadedness and as great a
calm as possible. One more thing, I am having printed the chaplet which is
to be on the back of the image, as well as the invocations that resemble a
litany; these too will be placed on the back. Another large image has also
been printed, and with it a few pages which contain the Novena to the Divine
Mercy. Pray, sister, that this be approved.”
August 30. Reverend Father Sopocko left this morning. When I was steeped in
a prayer of thanksgiving for the great grace that I had received from God;
namely, that of seeing Father, I became united in a special way with the
Lord who said to me,
he is a priest after My own Heart; his
efforts are pleasing to Me. You see, My daughter, that My will must be done
and that which I had promised you, I shall do. Through him I spread comfort
to suffering and careworn souls. Through him it pleased Me to proclaim the
worship of My mercy. And through this work of mercy more souls will come
close to Me than otherwise would have, even if he had kept giving absolution
day and night for the rest of his life, because by so doing, he would have
labored only for as long as he lived; whereas, thanks to this work of mercy,
he will be laboring till the end of the world.
I had
undertaken to make a novena for the intention of seeing him, but I did not
even finish it before God granted me that grace.
O my Jesus, how poorly I took advantage of this grace. But that did not
depend on me, though from another point of view, it did so very much.
During this conversation, I came to know his anguished soul. This crucified
soul resembles the Savior. Where he expects, with good reason, to find
consolation, he finds the cross. He lives among many friends, but has no one
but Jesus. This is how God strips the soul He especially loves.
Today I heard these words:
My daughter, be always like a little child
towards those who represent Me, otherwise you will not benefit from the
graces I bestow on you through them.
September 1, 1937. I saw the Lord Jesus, like a King in great majesty,
looking down upon our earth with great severity; but because of His Mother’s
intercession He prolonged the time of His mercy.
September 3. First Friday of the month. During Holy Mass, I became united
with God. Jesus gave me to know that even the smallest thing does not happen
on earth without His will. After having seen this, my soul entered into an
unusual repose; I found myself completely at peace as to the work in its
full extent. God can deal with me as He pleases, and I will Bless Him for
everything.
Up to now, I have been wondering, with some fear, where these inspirations
would lead me. My fear increased when the Lord made known to me that I was
to leave this congregation. this is the third year passing by since that
time, and my soul has felt, in turns, enthusiasm and an urge to act – and
then I have a lot of courage and strength – and then again, when the
decisive moment to undertake the work draws near, I feel deserted by God,
and because of this an extraordinary fear pervades my soul, and I see that
it is not the hour intended by God to initiate the work. These are suffering
about which I don’t even know how to write. God alone knows what I put up
with, day and night. It seems to me that the worst torments or the martyrs
would be easier for me to bear than what I am going through, though without
the shedding of a drop of blood. But all this is for souls, for souls, Lord…

Testimony of Dr.
McArthur Hill, former Abortion Provider

Action League of Chicago, directed by Joe Scheidler. Priests for Life

(continued)
In my second year of residency I spent
two months on a pathology rotation, which is an interesting thing, and I
had to come face-to-face with the contents of those sacks. We were
studying the embryology of the ovary. I was in an obstetrical gynecology
residency and we were obviously interested in the embryology of the
ovary. I, personally, then had to search through the jumbled-up mass of
tissue to find the fetal gonads, to be sure to include them on the slide
so that we could study them. The jumbled-up mass of tissue was easily
identifiable as the torn and shredded body of a tiny human being. It was
very obvious when we viewed the slides that we were also studying the
embryology of the testes, because half of the aborted fetuses were
males. Males! The NOW organization doesn't like to hear that.
Even though these discoveries made me
uncomfortable, I continued to do abortions. There were times when I
personally sat there and opened up containers, five, six, seven
containers at a time, and would open them up and stand and look at the
[contents].
Many of them [abortionists] had
nightmares about their participation in the abortions. In my nightmares
I would deliver a healthy newborn baby and I would take that healthy
newborn baby and I would hold it up, and I would face a jury of faceless
people and ask them to tell me what to do with this baby. They would go
thumbs-up or thumbs-down and if they made a thumbs-down indication then
I was to drop the baby into a bucket of water which was present. I never
did reach the point of dropping the baby into the bucket because I'd
always wake up at that point. But it was clear to me then that there was
something going on in my mind, subconsciously.
I actually stopped doing the second
trimester abortions at that time. There was no great clamor about my
refusing to do the abortions, but it was interesting to me that there
was a subtle understanding that my actions were causing the other
residents to do more than their share.
The number of abortions which I performed
was sharply reduced by two circumstances which arose at this time in my
training. The first was the twin Supreme Court rulings which we now know
as Roe v. Wade, and Doe v. Bolton. The United States Supreme Court in
one bold stroke made abortion on demand a reality.
Recently I heard Dr. Bernard Nathanson,
who ran one of the largest abortion clinics in the country, and he was
one of the original founders of the National Association for Repeal of
Abortion Laws, tell how they had planned each step to legalize abortion.
Things were going along as planned until the Court handed them so sudden
a victory that they found themselves with an outdated name and they had
to change their name to the National Abortion Rights Action League.
For those of you sitting here in the
audience today, I would like to have you take a moment and just think
about this: Can you recall what your reactions were to Roe v. Wade? Do
you know what the headlines were the day that the Court ruled on Roe v.
Wade? How many of you can tell me what you were doing when John F.
Kennedy died? Almost everybody in this room. Well, the headlines in the
Rocky Mountain News on January 22, 1973 said: "LBJ Dead at 64." That was
the day that Lyndon Baines Johnson died.
For those of you who were fighting
against legalization of abortion at that time, I can imagine your horror
when you discovered that Roe v. Wade had occurred. But I can stand here
and tell you that, for me, the news brought relief. I can remember
thinking as I was sitting in California at that time that finally the
airplanes could land somewhere else on their way to California and there
were other places then where the abortions could be performed.
