DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Tuesday (9/15): "Standing by the cross of
Jesus"
Scripture: John 19:25-27 (alternate reading:
Luke 7:11-17)
But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his
mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his
mother, 'Woman, behold, your son!' Then he said to the disciple,
'Behold, your mother!' And from that hour the disciple took her to his
own home.
Meditation: Does suffering or sorrow weigh you down? The cross
brings us face to face with Jesus' suffering. He was alone. All his
disciples had deserted him except for his mother and three women along
with John, the beloved disciple. The apostles had fled in fear. But
Mary, the mother of Jesus and three other women who loved him were
present at the cross. They demonstrate the power of love for overcoming
fear (1 John 4:18).
At the beginning of Jesus' birth, when he was presented in the
temple, Simeon had predicted that Mary would suffer greatly – a sword
will pierce through your own soul (see Luke 2:33-35). Many have
called Mary a martyr in spirit. Bernard of Clairvaux said: Jesus "died
in body through a love greater than anyone had known. She died in spirit
through a love unlike any other since his." Mary did not despair in her
sorrow and loss, since her faith and hope were sustained by her trust in
God and the love she had for her Son. Jesus, in his grief and suffering,
did not forget his mother. He entrusted her care to John, as well as
John to her. No loss, no suffering can keep us from the love of Christ
(Romans 8:35-39). Paul the Apostle says that love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1
Corinthians 13:3). We can find no greater proof of God's love for us
than the willing sacrifice of his Son on the cross. Do you know the love
that enables you to bear your cross and to endure trial and difficulties
with faith and hope in God?
"Lord Jesus Christ, by your death on the cross you have won pardon
for us and freedom from the tyranny of sin and death. May I live in the
joy and freedom of your victory over sin and death."
Psalm 31:1-2,6
In you, O Lord, do I seek refuge; let me never be put to shame; in
your righteousness deliver me!
Inlcine your ear to me, rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!
You hate those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in the Lord.

Benedict XVI to Former Students
"The Law, as Word of Love, Is Not a Contradiction to Freedom"
CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, SEPT. 14, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of Benedict XVI's homily during the Mass he celebrated Aug. 30 for a group of his former students. The text was published today by the Vatican press office. * * *
Dear brothers and sisters:
In the Gospel, we come across one of the essential topics of humanity's religious history: the issue of man's purity before God. Turning his gaze to God, man realizes he is "contaminated" and in a condition that impedes his access to the Holy One. The question thus arises as to how man can be pure, and free himself from the "filth" that separates him from God. Therefore, in various religions, purifying rites have arisen -- interior and exterior ways of purification. We find in today's Gospel rites of purification that are rooted in the tradition of the Old Testament, but which are administered in a very unilateral way. Consequently, they no longer serve as an opening of man to God, they are no longer ways of purification and salvation, but have become elements of an autonomous system of performances that, to be truly fulfilled in plenitude, also calls for specialists. Man's heart is no longer reached. Man, who moves within this system, either feels enslaved or falls into the arrogance of being able to justify himself.
Liberal exegesis states that in this Gospel is revealed the fact that Jesus substituted worship with morality -- that he put worship aside with all its useless practices. The relationship between man and God would now be based solely on morality. If that were true, it would mean that Christianity, in its essence, is morality, that is, that we ourselves make ourselves pure and good through our moral actions. If we reflect deeply on this opinion, it is obvious that this cannot be Jesus' complete answer to the question of purity. If we wish to hear and understand fully the Lord's message, then we must also listen fully, we cannot be content with a detail, but must pay attention to his whole message. In other words, we must read the Gospel entirely, all the New Testament and the Old together with it.
Today's first reading, taken from the Book of Deuteronomy, gives us an important aspect of an answer and makes us take a step forward. Here we hear something that is perhaps surprising to us, that is, that Israel itself is invited by God to be grateful to him and to feel a humble pride in the fact of knowing the will of God and of thus being wise. In fact, in that period of humanity, both the Greek as well as the Semitic world sought wisdom: They sought to understand what matters. Science tells us many things and is useful to us in many aspects, but wisdom is knowledge of the essential -- knowledge of the reason of our existence and of how we must live so that life is lived in the right way. The reading taken from Deuteronomy points out the fact that wisdom, in the end, is identical to the Torah -- to the Word of God that reveals to us what is essential, for whose end and in whose way we must live. Hence the Law does not appear as slavery, but is -- similar to what Psalm 119 says -- cause of great joy: We do not grope in darkness, we do not wander in vain in search of what might be right, we are not like sheep without a shepherd that do not know the right way. God has manifested himself. He, himself, shows us the way. We know his will and with it the truth that matters in our life. God says two things to us: On one hand, that he has manifested himself and shows us the right way; on the other, that God is a God who listens, who is close to us, who answers us and guides us. With this we also touch the subject of purity: His will purifies us, his closeness guides us.
I think it is worthwhile to reflect a moment on Israel's joy over the fact of knowing the will of God and of having thus received the gift of wisdom that heals us and that we cannot find on our own. Is there among us, in the Church today, a similar feeling of joy over God's closeness and the gift of his Word? Anyone who might wish to show such a feeling would be immediately accused of triumphalism. However, it is not, in fact, our ability which indicates to us the real will of God. It is an unmerited gift that makes us at the same time humble and happy. If we reflect on the perplexity of the world in face of the great issues of the present and future, then there should also arise in us again the joy over the fact that God has freely shown us his face, his will, himself. If this joy arises in us, it will also touch the heart of non-believers. Without this joy, we are not convincing. However, where this joy is present it has, though not wishing it, a missionary force. In fact, it arouses in men this question: Is the way not, in fact, here -- does this joy not in fact lead effectively to the traces of God himself?
All this is treated further in the passage taken from the Letter of James, which the Church proposes to us today. I love the Letter of James above all because, thanks to it, we can have an idea of the devotion of Jesus' family. It was a religious family. Religious in the sense that it lived the Deuteronomical joy because of God's closeness, which is given to us in his Word and his commandment. It is a kind of observance that is completely different from the one we find in the Pharisees of the Gospel, who had made of it an exteriorized and enslaving system. It is also a kind of observance different from that of Paul, as rabbi, who had learned: That was -- as we see in his letters -- the observance by a specialist who knew everything; who was proud of his knowledge and justice and who, however, suffered under the weight of the prescriptions, so that the Law no longer seemed to be the joyful guide to God, but rather an exigency that, in the last analysis, could not be fulfilled.
In the Letter of James we find this observance that does not look at itself, but that turns joyfully to the close God, who gives us his closeness and shows us the right way. Hence the Letter of James speaks of the perfect Law of freedom and means by that a new and deeper understanding of the Law that the Lord has given us. For James the Law is not an exigency that asks too much of us, that is before us from outside and that can never be satisfied. He refers to the point of view we find in a phrase in Jesus' farewell addresses: "No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you" (John 15:15).
He to whom everything has been revealed belongs to the family; he is no longer a servant, but free because, in fact, he himself forms part of the house. A similar initial introduction in the thought of God himself happened to Israel on Mount Sinai. It happened in a great and definitive way in the Cenacle and, in general, through the work, life, passion and resurrection of Jesus; in him, God has given us everything, he has manifested himself completely. We are no longer servants, but friends. The Law is no longer a prescription for persons who are not free, but is contact with the love of God -- being introduced to form part of the family, act that makes us free and "perfect." It is in this sense that James tells us, in today's reading, that the Lord has engendered us through his Word, that he has planted his Word in our interior as force of life. Here there is also talk of "pure religion" which consists in love of neighbor -- particularly of orphans and widows, of those who are in greatest need of us -- and in freedom from the fashions of this world, which contaminate us.
The Law, as word of love, is not a contradiction to freedom, but a renewal from within through friendship with God. Something similar is manifested when Jesus, in his address about the vine, says to his disciples: "You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you" (John 15:3). And the same appears again later in the priestly prayer: You are sanctified in the truth (cf. John 17:17-19). Thus we now find the right structure of the process of purification and of purity: We are not the ones who create what is good -- this would be a simple moralism -- instead, it is Truth that comes to meet us. He himself is the Truth, the Truth in person. Purity is a dialogic event. It begins with the fact that he comes to meet us -- he, who is Truth and Love -- takes us by the hand, and is fused with our being. In the measure in which we allow ourselves to be touched by him, in which the encounter becomes friendship and love, we are, stemming from his purity, pure persons and then persons who love with his love, persons who introduce others in his purity and his love.
Augustine summarized all this process in this beautiful expression: "Da quod iubes et iube quod vis" -- grant what you command and then command what you will.
We now wish to take this petition to the Lord and to pray: Yes, purify us in the truth. You be the Truth that purifies us. Through our friendship with you, may we come to be free and thus truly children of God, make us capable of sitting at your table and of spreading in this world the light of your purity and goodness. Amen.

CHAPTER I.
MARY ACCOMPANIES JESUS ON HIS JOURNEYS.
It would not be foreign to the purpose of this
history to describe the miracles and the heroic works of Christ, our
Redeemer and Master; for in almost all of them his most blessed and holy
Mother concurred and took a part. But I cannot presume to undertake a
work so arduous and so far above human strength and capacity. For the
Evangelist saint John, after having described many miracles of Christ,
says at the end of his Gospel, that Jesus did many other things, which,
if they were all described, could not be contained in all the books of
the world (John 21, 25). If such a task seemed so impossible to the
Evangelist, how much more to an ignorant woman, more useless than the
dust of the earth? All that is necessary and proper, and abundantly
sufficient for founding and preserving the Church has been written by
the four Evangelists; it is not necessary to repeat it in this history.
Yet in order to compose this history and in order not to pass over in
silence so many great works of the exalted Queen, which have not been
mentioned, it is necessary to touch on a few particulars. Moreover, I
think that to write of them and thus fasten them in my memory will be
both consoling and useful for my advancement. The others, which the
Evangelists recorded in their Gospels and of which I have not been
commanded to write, are better preserved for the beatific vision, where
the saints shall see them manifested to them by the Lord and where they
will eternally praise Him for such magnificent works.
From Cana in Galilee Christ, the Redeemer, walked to
Capernaum, a large and populous city near the sea of Tiberias. Here,
according to saint John (John 2, 12), He remained some days, though not
many; for as the time of the Pasch was approaching, He gradually drew
nigh to Jerusalem in order to celebrate this feast on the fourteenth of
the moon of March. His most blessed Mother, having rid Herself of her
house in Nazareth, accompanied Him thenceforth in his tours of preaching
and of teaching to the very foot of the Cross. She was absent from Him
only a few times, as when the Lord absented Himself on Mount Tabor (Matth.
17, 1), or on some particular conversions, as for instance that of the
Samaritan woman, or when the heavenly Lady herself remained behind with
certain persons in order to instruct and catechize them. But always
after a short time, She returned to her Lord and Master, following the
Sun of justice until it sank into the abyss of Death. During these
journeys the Queen of heaven proceeded on foot, just as her divine Son.
If even the Lord was fatigued on the way, as saint John says (John 43
61), how much more fatigued was this purest Lady? What hardships did She
not endure on such arduous journeys in all sorts of weather? Such is the
rigorous treatment accorded by the Mother of mercy to her most delicate
body! What She endured in labors alone is so great that not all the
mortals together can ever satisfy their obligations to Her in this
regard. Sometimes by permission of the Lord, She suffered such great
weakness and pains that He was constrained to relieve Her miraculously.
At other times He commanded Her to rest Herself at some stopping-place
for a few days; while again on certain occasions, He gave such lightness
to her body, that She could move about without difficulty as if on
wings.
As I have already mentioned, the heavenly Lady had
the whole doctrine of the evangelical law written in her heart.
Nevertheless She was as solicitous and attentive as a new disciple to
the preaching and doctrine of her divine Son, and She had instructed her
angels to report to Her, if necessary, the sermons of the Master
whenever She was absent. To the sermons of her Son She always listened
on her knees, thus according to the utmost of her powers showing the
reverence and worship due to his Person and doctrine. As She was aware
each moment, of the interior operations of the Soul of Christ, and of
his continual prayers to the eternal Father for the proper disposition
of the hearts of his hearers and for the growth of the seed of his
doctrine into eternal life, the most loving Mother joined the divine
Master in his petitions and prayers and in securing for them the
blessings of her most ardent and tearful charity. By her attention and
reverence She taught and moved others to appreciate duly the teaching
and instructions of the Savior of the world. She also knew the interior
of those that listened to the preaching of the Lord, their state of
grace or sin, their vices and virtues. This various and hidden
knowledge, so far above the capacity of men, caused in the heavenly
Mother many wonderful effects of highest charity and other virtues; it
inflamed Her with zeal for the Honor of the Lord and with ardent
desires, that the fruits of the Redemption be not lost to the souls,
while at the same time, the danger of their loss to the souls through
sin moved Her to exert Herself in the most fervent prayer for their
welfare. She felt in her heart a piercing and cruel sorrow, that God
should not be known, adored and served by all his creatures: and this
sorrow was in proportion to the unequaled knowledge and understanding
She had of all these mysteries. For the souls, that would not give
entrance to divine grace and virtue, She sorrowed with ineffable grief,
and was wont to shed tears of blood at the thought of their misfortune.
What the great Queen suffered in this her solicitude and in her labors
exceeds beyond all measure the pains endured by all the martyrs of the
world.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
NOTEBOOK V
I have noticed that,
from the very moment I entered the convent, I have been charged with one
thing namely, that I am a saint. But this word was always used scoffingly.
At first, this hurt me very much, but when I had risen above it, I paid no
attention to it. However when on one occasion a certain person (perhaps
Father Sopoko) suffered because of my sanctity, I was very pained that,
because of me others can experience some unpleasantness. And I began to
complain to the Lord Jesus, asking why this should be so, and the Lord
answered me, Are you sad because of this? Of
course you are a saint. Soon I Myself will make this manifest in you, and
they will pronounce the same words, saint, only this time it will be with
love.
I remind you, My daughter, that as often as you hear the clock strike the
third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying
it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor
sinners; for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every soul. In this
hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking;
it was the hour of grace for the whole world - mercy triumphed over justice.
My daughter, try your best to make the Stations of the Cross in this hour,
provided that your duties permit it; and if you are not able to make the
Stations of the Cross then at least step into the chapel for a moment and
then at least step into the chapel, for a moment and adore, in the Blessed
Sacrament, My Heart, which is full of mercy; and should you be unable to
step into the chapel, immerse yourself in prayer there where you happen to
be, if only for a brief instant. I claim veneration for My mercy from every
creature, but above all from you, since it is to you that I have given the
most profound understanding of this mystery.
O my God, I am over come with great longing for
You today. Oh, nothing else any longer occupies my heart. The earth no
longer contains anything for me. O Jesus, how strongly I feel this exile,
how very prolonged it is for me! O death, messenger of God, when will you
announce to me that longed for moment, through which I will be united to my
God forever?
O my Jesus, may the last days of my exile be spent totally according to Your
most holy will. I unite my sufferings, my bitterness and my last agony
itself to Your Sacred Passion; and I offer myself for the whole world to
implore an abundance of God's mercy for souls, and in particular for the
souls who are in our homes. I firmly trust and commit myself entirely to
Your holy will, which is mercy itself. Your mercy will be everything for me
at the last hour, as You yourself have promised me...
Hail to You, Eternal Love, My Sweet Jesus, who have condescended to dwell in
my heart! I salute You, O glorious Godhead who have deigned to stoop to me,
and out of love for me have so emptied Yourself as to assume the
insignificant form of bread. I salute You, Jesus, never fading flower of
humanity, You are all there is for my soul. Your love is purer than a lily,
and Your presence is more pleasing to me than the fragrance of a hyacinth.
Your friendship is more tender and subtle than the scent of a rose, and yet
it is stronger than death. I Jesus, incomprehensible beauty, it is with pure
souls that You communicate best, because they alone are capable of heroism
and sacrifice. O sweet, rose red blood of Jesus, ennoble my blood and change
it into Your own blood, and let this be done to me according to Your good
pleasure.
Know, My daughter, that between Me and you there
is a bottomless abyss, an abyss which separates the Creator from the
creature. But this abyss is filled with My mercy. I raise you up to Myself,
not that I have need of you, but solely out of mercy that I grant you the
grace of union with Myself.
Tell souls not to place within their own hearts obstacles to My mercy, which
so greatly wants to act within them. My mercy works in all those hearts
which open their doors to it. Both the sinner and the righteous person have
need of My mercy. Conversion, as well as perseverance, is a grace of My
mercy. I myself will attend to the sanctification of such souls. I provide
them with everything they will need to attain sanctity. The graces of My
mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that it - trust. The more a
soul trusts, the more it will receive. Souls that trust boundlessly are a
great comfort to Me, because I pour all the treasures of My graces into
them. I rejoice that they ask for much, because it is My desire to give
much, very much. On the other hand, I am sad when souls ask for little, when
they narrow their hearts.

CATHOLIC TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY |

Show
the American people what an abortion is!
(continued)
·
I wept and wept after seeing
your website. So many people would do anything for a child and so much
precious life is wasted daily. I said a prayer and kissed my two
children, grateful for what my husband and I have created.
·
Dear Father
Frank, I came across your webpage while looking for information on
miscarriages. I wanted to write you to say that my heart was touched
that there is some people out there bold enough to show the facts about
the stages of a baby's development. My last pregnancy I was 14 weeks and
had a miscarriage at home. I was already against abortion, however, at
that time after seeing my 14 week old baby and actually having to hold
it and put it in a container to take to the hospital to have it tested
to see why he may have died, I was so angry at those who could be so
cold hearted in killing human beings growing...and pity for those
mothers who most, don’t have a clue in the development of their babies.
And if they do, and still manage to kill their babies. Pray Gods mercy
on their souls when and if they cry for true repentance. That
miscarriage was one of the hardest things I have endured. And I can
honestly say it has saddened and angered me to think that babies the
same size of mine is being killed daily by those who don't want
them...where as people like me, who had already began bonding and then
find themselves losing their baby for unknown reasons. That was three
years ago, and I still bear pain from the loss. I am not catholic, but
protestant, however, I ask for you to light a candle in honor of my lost
son. And please remember me in your prayers...for recently I was told I
needed an hysterectomy and it has brought up some painful memories. I do
have two other children, both boys, ages 8 and 11, but the loss of my
other son still brings pain, who would be would be three years old this
September. I commend you on your website. I do pray that it educates
people and saves lives of babies.
·
I am almost 21
years old, and I want to thank you for this site. When I was 17 I had an
abortion without knowing anything except I was ridding myself of a
problem. I am glad that others can now see what it will be to abort
their baby and hopefully refrain from doing it. I cried when I saw this
site, and I could only think about the baby I killed. Just as Jesus
forgave those who crucified him I hope He can forgive me of what I have
done. Since I aborted my child, I have changed my lifestyle and my way
of thinking. I now believe that if a woman gets pregnant she should have
no choice but to have the baby and show others what it means not to use
safe sex. I went from thinking abortion was a great way of escape to one
of the harshest and cruelest laws we could have in our country.....If I
could do it over I would have done it differently, but since I cannot I
am grateful for this site...
·
I thought that
you would like to know that you have changed the mind of at least one
person with your web site, me. Although I have never had an abortion
myself, I have always thought that it should be a woman's right to do
what she wanted to her body. Today I stand corrected. Thank you for
showing me the truth. I will pray for success in your fight against
abortion, and for all the children who die every day. Thank you and God
Bless.
·
Wow, I could
only get through a few of those pictures before having to turn away.
They make a very good statement, and I think that if they were better
publicized, many more people would be against abortion. I think those
are some of the most graphic images I have ever seen. I used to be sort
of pro choice, at least in the matter of rapes and such, but now I am
sincerely reconsidering. Thank you.
·
A few weeks ago
I received a phone call where a lady was taking a survey asking if I was
pro-choice, pro-life, or in between. I answered somewhere in between. If
I had only known what I was saying. I am a young mother of two. I had my
first at 19 and my second at 22. With my first I wasn’t married yet, and
actually considered aborting him. Something inside my stomach just
wouldn’t let me, I don’t know why because at that time I was pro-choice.
After viewing your site I am no longer undecided on any of it. I am
saddened. I am thankful I took responsibility because my children have
made me who I am. They are beautiful. I am sorry I have been naive in
the past. I am pro-life for the future. Your web-site is a good thing.
·
Thank you for
the work you are doing. I finally got up the guts to look at the photos
of the aborted babies. They made me cry. I plan to print some and put
them in my notebook-just in case someone wants to know what this
"tissue" looks like.
·
Thank you for
showing the consequences of abortion on your site. Although I have
always been anti abortion I was not fully aware of the horror associated
with this vile act, how any person can perform or condone this barbaric
paractice in a civilised society never ceases to amaze me. In today's
world where the cruelty of nations against their own people is thrust at
us from every aspect of the media it is amazing that abortion commands
so little of the headlines. I feel fortunate that, living in Ireland as
I do, abortion continues to be outlawed, however pressure is mounting to
allow abortion to be legalised under the banner A woman’s choice.
Continue your fight against what is undoubtetly wrong and I hope that
you use whatever influence you have to aid the Catholic Church in
Ireland in its fight.
·
Hey, these
pictures are really really deep. I had an abortion, and I have since
gotten saved and have started advocating for other babies. These
pictures brought me to tears. We are killing real people. Oh God save us
and forgive us
·
Oh my goodness,
when i looked at your website, of the precious little babies that have
been murdered, i cried so hard. I'm still crying. To think that I had
the thought actually cross my mind of getting an abortion. I just had a
baby 4 months ago by emergency c section, and pregnant again. Seeing
those pictures really changed my mind. I'm only 18 and having a hard
time dealing with everything, but those pictures helped me decide. Then
I read the story about little Malachi, it tore me to pieces. I started
bawling. I'm so touched by how some people care. Thank You SOOOOOOOOOO
much. I know the choice for my little peanut is life. Thank you again.
Thank you from the depths of my heart, ps...I've included a picture of
my little boy if anyone would like to see him.
(to
be continued)
From the inception of his
pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show
the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is
so horrific that
words alone can never convey its meaning.
Fr. Frank serves on the board
of the
Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share
with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual
abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a
series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn
from other social reform movements is being prepared.
We present here some of the
grim reality of abortion. Only
seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to
sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to
this injustice.
These images are arranged
according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You
will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document
signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that
particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist,
Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted
children.
It is especially critical to
show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is
in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that
the myth persists that they are not really children at all.
We thank all of you who have
contacted us to tell us about
how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others
this horrible reality.
God, have mercy. Amen.·
