DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Tuesday (9/22): "Those who hear the word of
God and do it"
Scripture: Luke 8:19-21
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not
reach him for the crowd. 20 And he was told, "Your mother and your
brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you." 21 But he said to
them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and
do it."
Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not
intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many
opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends,
neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jesus seem to ignore his own
relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his
mother and his relatives is unquestionable. Jesus never lost an
opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about
the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he
pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our
relationship with God and with those who belong to God.
What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than
doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a
relationship – a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty,
faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness,
encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other
qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. God offers
us the greatest of relationships – union of heart, mind, and spirit with
himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16). God's love
never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us
down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering,
unconditional, and unstopable. Nothing can deter him from ever leaving
us, ignoring us, or treating us unkindly. He will love us no matter
what. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us – to be united
with him and to share in his love and unity of persons (1 John 3:1). God
is a trinity of persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and a community
of love. That is why Jesus challenged his followers and even his own
earthly relatives to recognize that God is the true source of all
relationships. God wants all of our relationships to be rooted in his
love.
Jesus is God's love incarnate – God's love made visible in human
flesh (1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jesus describes himself as the good
shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd who seeks
out the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the
father who yearns for his prodigal son to return home and then throws a
great party for his son when he has a change of heart and comes back
(Luke 15:11-32). Jesus offered up his life on the cross for our sake, so
that we could be forgiven and restored to unity and friendship with God.
It is through Jesus that we become the adopted children of God – his own
sons and daughters. That is why Jesus told his disciples that they would
have many new friends and family relationships in his kingdom. Whoever
does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family – his
sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of
Christ.
An early Christian martyr once said that "a Christian's only
relatives are the saints" – namely those who have been redeemed by the
blood of Christ and adopted as sons and daughters of God. Those who have
been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live as his disciples enter into
a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus
changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not
just a matter of flesh and blood. Our adoption as sons and daughters of
God transforms all of our relationships and requires a new order of
loyalty to God first and to his kingdom of righteousness and peace. Do
you want to grow in love and friendship? Allow God's Holy Spirit to
transform your heart, mind, and will to enable you to love freely and
generously as he loves.
"Heavenly Father, you are the source of all true friendship and love.
In all my relationships, may your love be my constant guide for choosing
what is good and for rejecting what is contrary to your will."
Psalm 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44
1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of
the LORD!
27 Make me understand the way of thy precepts, and I will meditate on
thy wondrous works.
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness, I set thy ordinances before
me.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with my
whole heart.
35 Lead me in the path of thy commandments, for I delight in it.
44 I will keep thy law continually, for ever and ever.

Will the "Third Rome" Reunite With the "First Rome"?
Recent Meeting Could Mark Turning Point
By Robert Moynihan
WASHINGTON, D.C., SEPT. 21, 2009 ( Zenit.org)- Sometimes there are no fireworks. Turning points can pass in silence, almost unobserved.
It may be that way with the "Great Schism," the most serious division in the history of the Church. The end of the schism may come more quickly and more unexpectedly than most imagine.
On Sept. 18, inside Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer palace about 30 miles outside Rome, a Russian Orthodox Archbishop named Hilarion Alfeyev, 43 (a scholar, theologian, expert on the liturgy, composer and lover of music), met with Benedict XVI, 82 (also a scholar, theologian, expert on the liturgy and lover of music), for almost two hours, according to informed sources. (There are as yet no "official" sources about this meeting -- the Holy See has still not released an official communiqué about the meeting.)
The silence suggests that what transpired was important -- perhaps so important that the Holy See thinks it isn't yet prudent to reveal publicly what was discussed.
But there are numerous "signs" that the meeting was remarkably harmonious.
If so, this Sept. 18 meeting may have marked a turning point in relations between the "Third Rome" (Moscow) and the "First Rome" (Rome) -- divided since 1054.
Archbishop Hilarion was in Rome for five days last week as the representative of the new Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill of Moscow.
One key person Archbishop Hilarion met with was Cardinal Walter Kasper. On Sept. 17, the cardinal told Vatican Radio that he and Archbishop Hilarion had a "very calm conversation."
Cardinal Kasper also revealed something astonishing: that he had suggested to the archbishop that the Orthodox Churches form some kind of "bishops' conference at the European level" that would constitute a "direct partner of cooperation" in future meetings.
This would be a revolutionary step in the organization of the Orthodox Churches. Papal-Patriarch encounter?
Cardinal Kasper said a Pope-Patriarch meeting was not on the immediate agenda, and would probably not take place in Moscow or Rome, but in some "neutral" place (Hungary, Austria and Belarus are possibilities).
Archbishop Hilarion himself revealed much about how his Rome visit was proceeding when he met on the evening of Sept. 17 (before his meeting with the Pope) with the Community of Sant'Egidio, an Italian Catholic group known for its work with the poor in Rome.
"We live in a de-Christianized world, in a time that some define -- mistakenly -- as post-Christian," Archbishop Hilarion said. "Contemporary society, with its practical materialism and moral relativism, is a challenge to us all. The future of humanity depends on our response… More than ever before, we Christians must stand together."
A report from Interfax, the news service of the Moscow Patriarchate, on Sept. 18 revealed that Archbishop Hilarion spoke to the Pope about "cooperation between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches in the area of moral values and of culture" -- in particular during the "Days of Russian Spiritual Culture," a type of exhibit with lectures scheduled for spring 2010 in Rome. (One might imagine that the Pope himself could attend such an exhibition).
In memory of the visit, Archbishop Hilarion gave the Pope a pectoral cross, made in workshops of Russian Orthodox Church, the report said, Interfax reported.
Today, an Interfax report supplied details of Hilarion's remarks this morning in the catacombs of St. Callixtus.
"Denied by the world, far from human eyes, deep under ground in caves, the first Roman Christians performed the feat of prayer," Hilarion said. "Their life brought the fruit of holiness and martyr heroism. The Holy Church was built on their blood shed for Christ."
Then the Church came out of the catacombs, but Christian unity was lost, the archbishop said.
Archbishop Hilarion said that human sin is the cause of all divisions, while Christian unity can be restored only in the way of sanctity.
"Each of us, conscientiously fulfilling a task the Church has given him or her, is called to personally contribute to the treasury of Christian sanctity and work to achieve God-commanded Christian unity," the archbishop said.
A second Interfax report today added further information about the meeting with the Pope.
Growing influence
"During a talk with Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Hilarion of Volokolamsk pointed out the status of Orthodox believers in Western Ukraine where three Orthodox dioceses had been almost eliminated as a result of coercive actions of Greek Catholics in late 1980s and early 1990s," Interfax reported.
Archbishop Hilarion "stated the need to take practical steps to improve the situation in Western Ukraine," within the territories of Lvov, Ternopol and Invano-Frankovsk Dioceses, the report said.
Meanwhile, in Russia itself, the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, headed by Patriarch Kirill, seems to be growing, though not without opposition.
The rise in Russia of Kirill and his increasing influence in legislative matters seems to be arousing opposition from the "siloviki," forces connected with the old KGB.
In an article in the current issue of Argumenty Nedeli, Andrey Uglanov says that Kirill's extraordinary activity has attracted attention from some who do not like to have their positions questioned, let alone challenged. And that has become Kirill's "big problem."
These "siloviki," Uglanov says, have been offended by Kirill's "anti-Stalinist and anti-Bolshevik actions," including his appearance at the Solovetsky stone in Moscow's Lubyanka Square on the very Day of the Memory of the Victims of Political Repression.
In this context, Hilarion's visit to Rome takes on even more importance.
The Russian Orthodox Church is a power in Russia, but it faces opposition and needs allies.
What is occurring in Hilarion's visit to Rome, then, may have ramifications not only for the overcoming of the "Great Schism," but also for the cultural, religious and political future of Russia, and of Europe as a whole.
It is especially significant, in this context, that Hilarion, Kirill's "Foreign Minister," has some of the same deep interests as Benedict XVI: the liturgy, and music.
"As a 15-year-old boy I first entered the sanctuary of the Lord, the Holy of Holies of the Orthodox Church,” Hilarion once wrote about the Orthodox liturgy. “But it was only after my entrance into the altar that the 'theourgia,' the mystery, and 'feast of faith' began, which continues to this very day.
"After my ordination, I saw my destiny and main calling in serving the Divine Liturgy. Indeed, everything else, such as sermons, pastoral care and theological scholarship were centered around the main focal point of my life -- the liturgy."
Liturgy
These words seem to echo the feelings and experiences of Benedict XVI, who has written that the liturgies of Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday in Bavaria when he was a child were formative for his entire being, and that his writing on the liturgy (one of his books is entitled "Feast of Faith") is the most important to him of all his scholarly endeavors.
"Orthodox divine services are a priceless treasure that we must carefully guard," Hilarion has written. "I have had the opportunity to be present at both Protestant and Catholic services, which were, with rare exceptions, quite disappointing… Since the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, services in some Catholic churches have become little different from Protestant ones."
Again, these words of Hilarion seem to echo Benedict XVI's own concerns. The Pope has made it clear that he wishes to reform the Catholic Church's liturgy, and preserve what was contained in the old liturgy and now risks being lost.
Hilarion has cited the Orthodox St. John of Kronstadt approvingly. St. John of Kronstadt wrote: "The Church and its divine services are an embodiment and realization of everything in Christianity... It is the divine wisdom, accessible to simple, loving hearts."
These words echo words written by Cardinal Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI, who often said that the liturgy is a "school" for the simple Christian, imparting the deep truths of the faith even to the unlearned through its prayers, gestures and hymns.
Hilarion in recent years has become known for his musical compositions, especially for Christmas and for Good Friday, celebrating the birth and the Passion of Jesus Christ. These works have been performed in Moscow and in the West, in Rome in March 2007 and in Washington DC in December 2007.
Closer relations between Rome and Moscow, then, could have profound implications also for the cultural and liturgical life of the Church in the West. There could be a renewal of Christian art and culture, as well as of faith.
All of this was at stake in the quiet meeting between Archbishop Hilarion and Benedict XVI on Friday afternoon, in the castle overlooking Lake Albano.

CHAPTER II
THE TRANSFIGURATION AND TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM
OF OUR LORD.
Our Redeemer and Master Jesus had already consumed
more than two years and a half in preaching and performing wonders, and
He was approaching the time predestined by the eternal wisdom for
satisfying divine justice for redeeming the human race through his
Passion and Death and thus to return to his eternal Father. Since all
his works were ordered with the highest wisdom for our instruction and
salvation, the Lord resolved to prepare and strengthen some of his
Apostles for the scandal of his Passion by manifesting to them
beforehand in its glory that same body, which was so soon to exhibit in
the disfigurement of the Cross. Thus would they be reassured by the
thought, they had seen it transfigured in glory before they looked upon
it disfigured by his sufferings. This he had promised a short time
before in the presence of all, although not to all, but only to some of
his disciples, as is recorded by saint Matthew (Matth. 16, 28). For his
Transfiguration He selected a high mountain in the center of Galilee,
two leagues east of Nazareth and called Mount Tabor. Ascending to its
highest summit with the three Apostles, Peter, and the two brothers
James and John, He was transfigured before them (Matth. 17, hark 9, 1;
Luke 9, 28). The three Evangelists tell us that besides these Apostles,
were present also the prophets, Moses and Elias, discoursing with Jesus
about his Passion, and that, while He was thus transfigured, a voice
resounded from heaven in the name of the eternal Father, saying "This is
my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him."
The Evangelists do not say that most holy Mary was
present at this Transfiguration, nor do they say that She was not there;
this did not fall within purpose, and they did not think it proper to
speak of the hidden miracle by which She was enabled to be there. For
the purpose of recording this event here, I was given to understand that
at the same time in which some of the holy angels were commissioned to
bring the soul of Moses and Elias from their abode, others of her own
guard carried the heavenly Lady to Mount Tabor, in order to witness the
Transfiguration of her divine Son, for without a doubt She really
witnessed it. There was no necessity of confirming the most holy Mother
in her faith, as was necessary with the Apostles; for She was invincibly
confirmed in faith.
But no human ingenuity can suffice fully to describe
the effects of this glorious vision of her Son on her most holy soul.
With inmost gratitude and deepest penetration She began to ponder upon
what She had seen and heard; exalted praise of the omnipotent welled
forth from her lips, when She considered how her eyes had seen refulgent
in glory that same bodily substance, which had been formed of her blood,
carried in her womb and nursed at her breast; how She had with her own
ears heard the voice of the eternal Father acknowledge her Son as his
own and appoint Him as the Teacher of all the human race. With her holy
angels She composed new canticles to celebrate an event so full of
festive joy for her soul and for the most sacred humanity of her Son. I
will not expatiate upon this mystery, nor discuss in what the
Transfiguration of the body of Jesus really consisted. It is enough to
know that his countenance began to shine like the sun and his garments
became whiter than the snow (Matth. 17, 2).

DIVINE MERCY
|
Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
NOTEBOOK V I
February 16, 1938. as
I was praying to the living Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the
intention of a certain priest, Jesus suddenly gave me knowledge of His
goodness and said to me, I will give him nothing
that is beyond his strength.
When o learned of some of the sufferings and
troubles that a certain person was going through in connection with this
whole work of God, I asked the Lord Jesus before Holy Communion that He
might make known to me whether by any chance these sufferings were not
caused by me: “My sweetest Jesus, I implore You by Your infinite goodness
and mercy, make know to me whether anything in this matter displeases You or
whether there is some fault of mine in this. If there is, I ask You, when
You enter my heart, fill it with unrest and make know to me Your
displeasure. And if I am not guilty in this matter, confirm me in peace.”
when I receive the Lord, my soul was filled with great peace, and the Lord
gave me to know that the work was undergoing at trial, but was no less
pleasing to God because of this. I felt great joy at this but I redoubled my
prayers so that this work might come through the ordeal unharmed.
O my Jesus, how good it is to be on the cross, but with You! With You, my
Love, my soul is constantly stretched out on the cross and is being filled
with bitterness. Vinegar and gall touch my lips, but it is good that it is
so, because Your Divine Heart was filled with bitterness throughout Your
life, and in return for Your love You received ingratitude. You were in such
pain that a sorrowful complaint escaped your lips when You said that You
were looking for someone to console You and You found no one.
When I asked the Lord to be so good as to cast a glance upon a certain soul
[probably Father Sopocko] who was struggling alone against many
difficulties, the Lord gave me to know, in an instant, that all people are
as dust under His feet. So do not worry; you see
that they cannot do a thing of themselves. And if I allow them to seem to
triumph, I do this for the sake of My impenetrable decrees.
I experienced great peace in seeing how all
things are determined by the Lord.
When the chaplain [Father Theodore] brings me the Lord Jesus, there are
moments when I am pervaded with a very vivid presence of God, and the Lord
gives me to know His holiness. At such times, I see the smallest speck on my
soul, and I would like to purify my soul before every Holy Communion. When I
asked the confessor, he said there was no need to confess before every Holy
Communion. Holy Communion takes away these tiny things and it is a
temptation to think about confession when receiving Holy Communion. I did
not go on to explain the condition of my soul in any greater detail, because
he was not my director, but the confessor. This knowledge does not take up
my time, because it is faster than lightning; it enkindles my love, leaving
me with a knowledge of myself…

Show
the American people what an abortion is!
(continued)
***
I have to thank you for
putting the images of what abortions truly are on your page. I had to
see for myself if it was true or not, whether or not it was just a
"cluster of cells" at six weeks gestation, as I have been taught in
school. Apparently it’s not. Thank you for putting this out in the
public. People need to see this and to wake up to what abortion truly
is-infanticide.
***
Hello, I visited you site
today. My college professor assigned me the topic of abortion for my
final exam paper and I was sceptical about writing on such a touchy
topic, I am the mother of two beautiful children, both of who were
unplanned and came at the wrong time. When I found out I was preganat
for the second time I was upset and even thought about abortion. Someone
dear to me showed me your website and I cried for an hour. To this day I
still get tearful when I look at my four month old son. I almost made
the worst decision of my life. I wish everyone could see these pictures
and hopefully change lives. I have talked to several people who are
currently pregnant and few even thought about abortion, I asked them if
they had seen pictures and they said no and I showed them, they had the
same reaction to me. I do not think that thought will ever come up in my
mind again. The gift of a child is so precious, if one doesn’t want the
child themselves they should consider adoption not abortion. There are
so many out there who want children and can not have them. I am going to
provide a link if it is approved by you for people to visit.
***
I AM APOLED AT WHAT I SAW ON
YOUR WEB SIT I NEVER DID BELIVE IN ABORTION AND KNOW I NOW WHY. I WAS
ONCE ASKED TO HAVE ONE AND SAID NO! I COULD NOT HURT MY BABY LIKE THAT
AND YOU SHOULD JUST PUT ME IN JAIL NOW BECAUSE IT IS MURDER. I DONT KNOW
HOW PEOPLE CAN DO THAT TO LITTLE PEOPLE THEY ARE HUMAN JUST LIKE US
***
I just wanted to say thank
you for showing these innocent babies dead from abortion on this site.
More people should be aware of this and me and my friend are going to
make a website about abortion and put fliers up at school and on the
Internet. I have always felt this way about abortion i think it’s wrong,
unsafe, and should be illegal. It takes somebody extremely sick to be
able to do this to an innocent child. i don’t care if you were raped,
molested, or just aren’t ready. i believe that everything happens for a
reason and even something as bad as rape can result into the most
beautifulest gift that god gave us, a baby, and to think that it would
make you happy to kill that piece of survival you got from your
injustice makes me literally sick. thank you for your time to make this
website. I appreciate this so much. I am catholic and i go to church
every Sunday and i say my prayers every day before i eat and when i go
to bed and every time i even whisper a prayer i will make to pray for
these unfortunate children. thank you
***
I just wanted to say thank
you for putting a website out there that was graphic and not sugar
coated. I looked through most of the pictures (BEFORE I WENT CAREENING
TO THE BATHROOM) and instantly I started to cry. I wish that people
really knew what they were doing to their children when they get an
abortion. I am casting no judgement on anyone who had an abortion but
you really need to repent and ask GOD for his never-ending forgiveness.
May the Lord bless and keep you.
***
Well what can i say, i am in
tears here, my mother was due to have me aborted when i was 12 weeks
gestation, there were several reasons for this, one was her age, she was
39 with two grown up daughters, two was my mother and father were going
to part when the two children had left home and three she had a coil
still in place, and the doctors advised her to abort me, as i stood no
chance of living any how. But my mothers faith was too strong to abort
me, so she decided to let "nature take its course" and if i was to be i
would be, and here i am, i was born with the coil inside my placenta,
and it didn't harm me at all(praise God) im so glad my mother didnt
listen to the doctors, it took her a while to get used to me, but she
and my father loved me dearly once i was born, i was there miracle baby,
im just so sorry that other mothers dont give thier babies the chance to
win them over like mine did, yes it was hard for her but she has a
beautiful daughter and grandaughter now, and she would have had niether
if the "proffesionals" had talked her round. It is some comfort to know
the little ones pictured on your site are safe in the loving arms of
Jesus, and wanted and received by Him. Thank you for youre site,
continue to do this Godly work
***
I want to thank you for the
pictures . I was all for abortion until I saw them . How any one could
do that to a helpless child is beyond me. If I can help in any way
please feel free to e-mail me and let me know.
***
Looking at these pictures and
reading about the abortion procedures really upset me. I’m 15 and my 17
year old sister just had an abortion last week. She was 14 weeks
pregnant. She was pressured by extended family, friends and a lot of
people and couldn’t really make her own choice. I think if she would
have come to this website she would have never considered doing what she
did. I wanted to be an aunt. I was there when we heard the babies
heartbeat..and now it’s gone. My sister got admitted into the hospital
last night. She now has an infection and is in a lot of pain. She’ll be
there for at least a week. Anyone who is considering abortion please
look at the pictures of these little lives that couldn't choose for
themselves. Your baby wants to be born.
***
How do you get these photos
and how can you bear to take them without crying?
***
I think this is an excellent
website. It tells the brutal truth behind abortion. Most people try to
disassociate themselves with the details and just say, "it’s the woman’s
choice". This tells the details. My husband was one of those people who
say let the woman decide but after he reviewed your website with me, I
believe he has changed his mind. The disgust that some of these doctors
do.... even in late term, it’s horrible. When my husband hears the word
abortion....I believe these images and stories will forever be in his
mind.... Heartbreaking...
***
I was for abortion for
abortion up until this documentary, [on UK tv] but it changed my opinion
radically after watching it and finding your website. As a 17 year old,
I had always thought it was the woman’s choice if she wanted an
abortion. I can’t see now, how they can justify murdering their unborn
child.
***
(to
be continued)
From the inception of his
pro-life work, Fr. Frank Pavone has been urging the mass media to show
the American people what an abortion is. Abortion is a reality which is
so horrific that
words alone can never convey its meaning.
Fr. Frank serves on the board
of the
Center for Bioethical Reform, which makes it a priority to share
with the nation the world's largest collection of images of actual
abortions. In conjunction with that organization, a
series of careful analyses of what the pro-life movement can learn
from other social reform movements is being prepared.
We present here some of the
grim reality of abortion. Only
seeing such images can bring us to the kind of indignation needed to
sustain the sacrifices that will be necessary to finally bring an end to
this injustice.
These images are arranged
according to the gestational age of the children who were killed. You
will note that below the link to each image is a link to a document
signed by a pathologist who attests to the medical accuracy that
particular image. Each document was also notarized. This pathologist,
Dr. Abigail Allen, worked specifically with the remains of aborted
children.
It is especially critical to
show people the images of babies aborted in the first trimester. It is
in regard to such children, who constitute 90% of abortion victims, that
the myth persists that they are not really children at all.
We thank all of you who have
contacted us to tell us about
how these images have affected you. Please use them to show others
this horrible reality.
God, have mercy. Amen.·
