DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Tuesday (9/29): "You will see heaven opened
and the angels of God"
Scripture: John 1:47-51 (alternate reading:
Luke 9:46-50)
47 Jesus saw Nathan'a-el coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an
Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" 48 Nathan'a-el said to him, "How
do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you
were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathan'a-el answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 50 Jesus
answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do
you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 51 And he said to
him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the
angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."
Meditation: What would you give to see beyond the visible – to
"see heaven opened and the angels of God"? When Philip brought Nathaniel
to Jesus, Jesus did the unthinkable! He brought revelation to Nathaniel
– revelation of how God sees each of us individually in the deepest
recesses of our hearts where no visible eye can perceive the deepest
thoughts and longings we have for peace, happiness, and spiritual
fulfillment. Nathaniel was very startled that Jesus knew him so
intimately even before Nathaniel had the opportunity to meet Jesus.
Jesus knew Nathaniel's deepest thoughts and his hunger and longing for
God.
What is the significance of Jesus' revelation of seeing Nathanial
"under the fig tree"? For the people of Israel, the fig tree was a
symbol of God's blessing and peace. It provided shade from the midday
sun and a cool place to retreat and pray. It is very likely that
Nathanial had been thinking about God "under the fig tree" and
reflecting on God's promise to give his people Israel a savior who would
free them from oppression. Perhaps he dozed off for a midday nap and
dreamt of God's kindgom like Jacob had dreamt when God gave him a vision
of a great ladder which united earth with heaven (see Genesis 28:12-17).
Nathaniel recognized that Jesus truly was the Messiah and the Lord of
heaven and earth because Jesus offered him the greatest gift which only
God can give – the gift of friendship with God and free access to God's
throne in heaven.
What does Jesus mean when he says "you will see heaven opened, and
the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man"? One
of the most remarkable revelations recorded in the bible is the dream of
Jacob (Genesis 28:12-17). God had opened a door for Jacob that brought
him and his people into a new relationship with the living God. In
Jacob's dream God revealed his angelic host and showed him the throne of
heaven and promised Jacob that he and his descendants would dwell with
the living God. Who are the angels and why do they intervene between
heaven and earth? The scriptures tell us the angels are God's servants
and messengers. "They are the mighty ones who do his word, hearkening
to the voice of his word" (Psalm 103:20). The angels belong to
Christ and were created for and through him (Colossians 1:16). The
Letter to the Hebrews speaks of the role of the angels in God's plan of
salvation: "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve,
for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14)
The angels are not only messengers but protectors and guardians as well.
“For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all yours
ways” (Psalm 91:11). We are not alone in our struggle against sin
and evil in the world. The armies of heaven fight for us and with us in
the spiritual battle for our hearts, minds, and wills. Do you know the
peace and security of a life submitted to God and to his way of peace
and happiness?
Jesus' response to Nathanial's new faith is the promise that Jesus
himself will be the "ladder which unites earth with heaven". Jesus
proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the promise made to the
Patriarch Jacob and his descendants. Jesus is the true ladder or
stairway to heaven. In Jesus' incarnation, the divine Son of God taking
on human flesh for our sake, we see the union of heaven and earth – God
making his dwelling with us and bringing us into the heavenly reality of
his kingdom. Jesus' death on the cross where he defeated sin and won new
life for us through his resurrection opens the way for each of us to
come into a new relationship with God as his sons and daughters. The
Lord Jesus opens the way for each of us to "ascend to heaven" and to
bring "heaven to earth" in the daily circumstances of our lives. God's
kingdom is present in those who seek him and who do his will. Through
the gift of faith God opens a door for each one of us to the heavenly
reality of his kingdom. Do you see and believe the heavenly reality with
the "eyes of faith"?
"Heavenly Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, you have opened the
way to heaven for us. As you revealed yourself to your beloved
patriarchs and apostles, so reveal yourself to me that I may glorify you
in my daily life. May I always find joy in your presence and never lose
sight of the kingdom of heaven."
Psalm 138: 1-5
1 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I
sing your praise;
2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for
your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted above
everything your name and your word.
3. On the day I called, you answered me, my strength of soul you
increased.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have
heards the words of your mouth;
5 and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory
of the Lord.

Papal Farewell to Czech Republic
"The Church in This Country Has Been Truly Blessed With a Remarkable Array of Missionaries and Martyrs"
PRAGUE, Czech Republic, SEPT. 28, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is the text of the address Benedict XVI gave today as he ended his three-day visit to the Czech Republic.
* * *
Pane prezidente,
páni kardinálové,
bratři v biskupské službě,
Vaše Excelence,
dámy a pánové!
Ve chvíli slavnostního rozloučení vám chci vyjádřit své poděkování za štědrou pohostinnost, které se mi dostalo během krátkého pobytu v této nádherné zemi.
[Mr President, Dear Cardinals, Brother Bishops, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
As I come to bid farewell, I wish to thank you for your generous hospitality during my short stay in this beautiful country.]
I am especially grateful to you, Mr President, for your words and for the time spent at your residence. On this feast of Saint Wenceslaus, your country's guardian and patron, allow me once again to offer you my sincere good wishes for your name-day. As today is also the name-day of Bishop Václav Malý, I offer my greetings to him too, and I wish to thank him for all his hard work in coordinating the arrangements for my pastoral visit to the Czech Republic. To Cardinal Vlk, Archbishop Graubner, and all who did so much to ensure the smooth unfolding of the series of meetings and celebrations, I am deeply grateful. Naturally I include in my thanks the public authorities, the media, the many volunteers who helped to direct the crowds, and all the faithful who have been praying that this visit might bear fruit for the good of the Czech nation and for the Church in the region.
I shall treasure the memory of the moments of prayer that I was able to spend together with the Bishops, priests and faithful of this country. It was particularly moving this morning to celebrate Mass at Stará Boleslav, site of the martyrdom of the young duke Wenceslaus, and to venerate him at his tomb on Saturday evening in the majestic Cathedral that dominates Prague's skyline. Yesterday in Moravia, where Saints Cyril and Methodius launched their apostolic mission, I was able to reflect in prayerful thanksgiving on the origins of Christianity in this region, and indeed throughout the Slavic territories. The Church in this country has been truly blessed with a remarkable array of missionaries and martyrs, as well as contemplative saints, among whom I would single out Saint Agnes of Bohemia, whose canonization just twenty years ago providentially heralded the liberation of this country from atheist oppression.
My meeting yesterday with representatives of other Christian communities brought home to me the importance of ecumenical dialogue in this land which suffered so much from the consequences of religious division at the time of the Thirty Years' War. Much has already been achieved in healing the wounds of the past, and decisive steps have been taken along the path towards reconciliation and true unity in Christ. In building further on these solid foundations, there is an important role for the academic community to play, through its uncompromising search for truth. I was glad to have the opportunity to spend time yesterday with representatives of the nation's universities, and to express my esteem for the noble vocation to which they have dedicated their lives.
I was especially delighted to meet the young people, and to encourage them to build on the best traditions of this nation's past, particularly its Christian heritage. According to a saying attributed to Franz Kafka, "Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old" (Gustav Janouch, Conversations with Kafka). If our eyes remain open to the beauty of God's creation and our minds to the beauty of his truth, then we may indeed hope to remain young and to build a world that reflects something of that divine beauty, so as to inspire future generations to do likewise.
Mr President, dear friends: I thank you once again and I promise to remember you in my prayers and to carry you in my heart. May God bless the Czech Republic!
Ať Pražské Jezulátko je i nadále vaší inspirací a vede všechny rodiny vašeho národa. Kéž vám všem Bůh žehná!
[May the Holy Infant of Prague continue to inspire and guide you and all the families of this nation! May God bless all of you!]

CHAPTER III
THE LAST SUPPER.
While receiving his own body and blood Christ our
Lord composed a canticle of praise to the eternal Father and offered
Himself in the blessed Sacrament as a sacrifice for the salvation of
man. He took another particle of the consecrated bread and handed it to
the archangel Gabriel who brought and communicated it to the most holy
Mary. By having such a privilege conferred on one of their number, the
holy angels considered themselves sufficiently recompensed for being
excluded from the sacerdotal dignity and for yielding it to man. The
privilege of merely having even one of their number hold the sacramental
body of their Lord and true God filled them with a new and immense joy.
In abundant tears of consolation the great Queen awaited holy Communion.
When saint Gabriel with innumerable other angels approached, She
received it, the first after her Son, imitating his self-abasement,
reverence and holy fear. The most blessed Sacrament was deposited in the
breast and above the heart of the most holy Virgin Mother, as in the
most legitimate shrine and tabernacle of the Most High. There the
ineffable sacrament of the holy Eucharist remained deposited from that
hour until after the Resurrection, when saint Peter said the first Mass
and consecrated anew, as I shall relate in its place.
After having thus favored the heavenly Princess, our
Savior distributed the sacramental bread to the Apostles (Luke 22, 17),
commanding them to divide it among themselves and partake of it. By this
commandment He conferred upon them the sacerdotal dignity and they began
to exercise it by giving Communion each to Himself. This they did with
the greatest reverence, shedding copious tears and adoring the body and
blood of our Lord, whom they were receiving. They were established in
the power of the priesthood, as being founders of the holy Church and
enjoying the distinction of priority over all others (Ephes. 2, 20).
Then saint Peter, at the command of Christ the Lord, administered two of
the particles of holy Communion to the two patriarchs, Enoch and Elias.
This holy Communion so rejoiced these two holy men, that they were
encouraged anew in their hope of the beatific vision, which for them was
to be deferred for so many ages, and they were strengthened to live on
in this hope until the end of the world. Having given most fervent and
humble thanks to the Almighty for this blessing, they were brought back
to their abiding-place by the hands of the holy angels. The Lord desired
to work this miracle in order to pledge Himself to include the ancient
natural and written laws in the benefits of the Incarnation, Redemption
and general resurrection; since all these mysteries were contained in
the most holy Eucharist. By thus communicating Himself to the two men,
Enoch and Elias, who were still in their mortal flesh, these blessings
were extended over the human race such as it existed under the natural
and the written laws, while all the succeeding generations were to be
included in the new law of grace, the Apostles at the head. This was all
well understood by Enoch and Elias, and, returning to the midst of their
contemporaries, they gave thanks their and our Redeemer for this
mysterious blessing.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
NOTEBOOK V I
J.M.J.
March 20, 1938.
Today, in spirit, I accompanied a certain dying soul. I obtained trust in
God’s mercy for her. The soul was near despair.
This night is known only to You, O Lord. I have offered it for poor obdurate
sinners, to obtain Your mercy for them. Scourge me here, burn me here, as
long as You give me the souls of sinners, and especially … O Jesus, with You
nothing is lost; take everything and give me souls… sinners.
At adoration during the Fourthy-Hour devotion, the Lord said to me,
My daughter, write that involuntary offenses of
souls do not hinder My love for them or prevent Me from uniting Myself with
them. But voluntary offenses, even the smallest, obstruct My graces, and I
cannot lavish My gifts on such souls.
Jesus gave me to know of how everything is dependent on His will, thus
giving me profound peace as regards the security of His work.
Listen, My daughter, although all the works that
come into being by My will are exposed to great sufferings, consider whether
any of them has been subject to greater difficulties than that work which is
directly Mine – the work of Redemption. You should not worry too much about
adversaries. The world is not as powerful as it seems to be; its strength is
strictly limited. Know, My daughter, that if your soul is filled with the
fire of My pure Love, then all difficulties dissipate like fog before the
sun’s rays and dare not touch the soul. All adversaries are afraid to start
a quarrel with such a soul, because they sense that it is stronger than the
whole world…
My daughter, do as much for this work of mercy as obedience allows, but
present clearly to your confessor the very least of My demands, and he will
decide. You must not shirk in any way, but carry out everything faithfully;
otherwise, I would find no pleasure in you…

Show
the American people what an abortion is!
(continued)
Baby Malachi, A History
-- New York Lambs of Christ
This little baby boy was found frozen in a jar with three other
little children at an abortion mill in Dallas, Texas, in February 1993.
We were stunned when we found him. There were jars upon jars of frozen
children in that abortion mill. Rhonda Mackey, our executive secretary,
brought this one jar out and asked me what we should do with it. I had
no idea, but I instinctively knew we could not leave it there. We
brought the jar to Dr. McCarty, a wonderful ObGyn in Dallas, who put the
pieces of this baby and the others back together.
The entire process was put on video as Dr. McCarty, and all who were
present, wept at the reconstruction of these precious children. The life
that was once there was now gone forever. It became apparent to all of
us that God had given us these children, one in particular, to show to
the entire world the horror of abortion. One picture can speak louder
than a truckload of words.
We prayed, and asked God to allow this little boy to speak to our
nation. We remembered the scripture in Hebrews 11:4: "...he still
speaks, even though he is dead." It was upon a very specific
revelation from our Lord that we had the picture of one baby blown up to
poster size. Rhonda asked me if she might have the privilege of naming
this little baby boy. She prayed, and God gave her the name that this
child would become known by all over the world - Malachi!
This name strikes terror in the hearts of those who kill children,
for they know that this child, more than anything else, reveals the
incredible horror of what abortion really is.
Yes, he has done that and so much more! Though he is dead, yet he
still speaks! Thousands upon thousands of children have been saved
because of his precious little life. It lasted only 21 weeks, yet
fathers are now joining the battle to defend the defenseless.
We buried Malachi at the Cemetery of the Innocents in Dallas, Texas,
in the summer of 1993. The funeral was held at the mammoth front portico
of the Dallas City Hall. Hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to
Malachi. We loved him deeply though we knew him not. When those in City
Hall realized that we were having a funeral for a real child they
demanded that the Dallas Police put a stop to the whole funeral. Captain
Kowalski, the head of SWAT in Dallas, told his superiors that he would
in no way violate this funeral. This man, who had arrested us on several
occasions, now joined with us in honoring the life of this one small (so
very small) child. He stood for Jesus. HE STOOD!
When he relayed to me that he would not interfere with the memorial
service, nor would he allow anyone else to interfere, I wept. I wept
because I knew that Captain Kowalski was now taking his stand and all
his officers knew it - all City Hall knew it! I wept because I knew
that Malachi was beginning his missionary journey and that he was
already fulfilling the purpose, for his short life.
Listen to these words, you mothers and fathers who have aborted your
children. Listen to these words you, who have failed so miserably and
found there is no way to undo the wrong you have done. Hear the word God
and your child are speaking to you: "You intended to harm me, but God
intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of
many lives." Genesis 50:20.
If you know the mother and father of Baby Malachi, would you please
tell them that God is using him powerfully to speak for those who cannot
speak for themselves? Will you please let them know, that though they
intended him harm, God is using it for good? Will you please tell them
that God loves them and that the guilt that has driven them so far from
Him can be overcome in one divine moment? Please let them know that it
is time to come home to Jesus.
Malachi means My Messenger.
Malachi's message is that the killing of innocent babies must stop!
