"Did not our hearts burn while he opened to us
the scriptures"
Scripture: Luke 24:13-35
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emma'us,
about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other
about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking
and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.
16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to
them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each
other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one
of them, named Cle'opas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to
Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in
these days?" 19 And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to
him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed
and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief
priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and
crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem
Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since
this happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us.
They were at the tomb early in the morning 23 and did not find his
body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of
angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with
us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but
him they did not see." 25 And he said to them, "O foolish men, and
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was
it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and
enter into his glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the
prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things
concerning himself.
28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He
appeared to be going further, 29 but they constrained him, saying,
"Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far
spent." So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table
with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it
to them. 31 And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and
he vanished out of their sight. 32 They said to each other, "Did not
our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while
he opened to us the scriptures?" 33 And they rose that same hour and
returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together
and those who were with them, 34 who said, "The Lord has risen
indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" 35 Then they told what had
happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking
of the bread.
Meditation: Why was it difficult for the disciples to recognize
the risen Lord? Jesus' death scattered his disciples and shattered their
hopes and dreams. They had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.
They saw the cross as defeat and could not comprehend the empty tomb
until the Lord appeared to them and gave them understanding. Jesus
chided the disciples on the road to Emmaus for their slowness of
heart to believe what the scriptures had said concerning the
Messiah. They did not recognize the risen Jesus until he had broken
bread with them. Do you recognize the Lord in his word and in the
breaking of the bread?
St. Augustine of Hippo (5th century) reflects on the dimness of their
perception: "They were so disturbed when they saw him hanging on the
cross that they forgot his teaching, did not look for his resurrection,
and failed to keep his promises in mind" (Sermon 235.1).
"Their eyes were obstructed, that they should not recognize him until
the breaking of the bread. And thus, in accordance with the state of
their minds, which was still ignorant of the truth (that the Christ
would die and rise again", their eyes were similarly hindered. It was
not that the truth himself was misleading them, but rather that they
were themselves unable to perceive the truth." (From
The Harmony of the Gospels, 3.25.72) How often do we fail to
recognize the Lord when he speaks to our hearts and opens his mind to
us? The Risen Lord is ever ready to speak his word to us and to give us
understanding of his ways. Do you listen attentively to the Word of God
and allow his word to change and transform you?
"Lord Jesus Christ, open the eyes of my heart to recognize your
presence with me and to understand the truth of your saving word.
Nourish me with your life-giving word and with the bread of life."
Psalm 105: 1-9
1 O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds
among the peoples!
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works!
3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD
rejoice!
4 Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his presence continually!
5 Remember the wonderful works that he has done, his miracles, and the
judgments he uttered,
6 O offspring of Abraham his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
7 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
8 He is mindful of his covenant for ever, of the word that he commanded,
for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant which he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac

New Poll Shows Strong Support for Conscience Rights in Health Care
WASHINGTON—A nationwide poll conducted on March 23-25 found that 87 percent of adults surveyed believe it is important to "make sure that healthcare professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections." Conducted by the polling company™, inc./WomanTrend on behalf of the Christian Medical Association (CMA), the survey also showed majority support even among self-identified "pro-choice" respondents for the two-month-old conscience protection regulation now at risk of being rescinded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Deirdre McQuade, spokeswoman on abortion at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), welcomed the data and urged HHS to keep the current regulation in place.
"The Obama administration has moved to rescind a vital HHS regulation protecting the conscience rights of health care providers," McQuade said, "But according to this new survey, the majority of Americans—whether 'pro-life' or 'pro-choice', male or female, Republican or Democratic—support the regulation and oppose its rescission."
The survey summary and methodology are available at www.freedom2care.org. The Freedom2Care Coalition is an ad hoc coalition organized by the CMA to defend the conscience rights of health care professionals and students.
The USCCB and Freedom2Care are helping Americans voice their support for the regulations by midnight April 9 when the public comment period draws to a close. To date, a total of over 73,000 e-mail messages have been sent to HHS through Freedom2Care.org and the USCCB's e-mail campaign facilitated by its partner organization, the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment.
"Only one day remains to defend the existing regulation," McQuade explained. "I urge all concerned citizens to e-mail HHS and pray for the protection of conscience rights."
The USCCB has advocated for the strongest possible protection for conscience rights since the current regulation was first considered in the summer of 2008. For additional resources, including links to the e-mail campaign and bi-lingual YouTube videos of medical professionals and USCCB president Cardinal Francis George, visit: www.usccb.org/conscienceprotection.

Blessed Caesar de Bus
(1544-1607)
Like so many of us, Caesar de Bus struggled with the decision about what
to do with his life. After completing his Jesuit education he had
difficulty settling between a military and a literary career. He wrote
some plays but ultimately settled for life in the army and at court.
For a time life was going rather smoothly for the engaging, well-to-do
young Frenchman. He was confident he had made the right choice. That was
until he saw firsthand the realities of battle, including the St.
Bartholomew's Day massacres of French Protestants in 1572.
He
fell seriously ill and found himself reviewing his priorities, including
his spiritual life. By the time he had recovered Caesar had resolved to
become a priest. Following his ordination in 1582, he undertook special
pastoral work: teaching the catechism to ordinary people living in
neglected, rural, out-of-the-way places. His efforts were badly needed
and well received.
Working with his cousin, Caesar developed a program of family
catechesis. The goal—to ward off heresy among the people—met the
approval of local bishops. Out of these efforts grew a new religious
congregation: the Fathers of Christian Doctrine.
One of Caesar's works, Instructions for the Family on the Four Parts
of the Roman Catechism, was published 60 years after his death.
He
was beatified in 1975.
Comment:
“Family catechesis” is a familiar term in parish life today. Grounded in
the certainty that children learn their faith first from their parents,
programs that deepen parental involvement in religious education
multiply everywhere. There were no such programs in Caesar’s day until
he saw a need and created them. Other needs abound in our parishes, and
it’s up to us to respond by finding ways to fill them or by joining in
already established efforts.

with which She Observed the Rules of the Temple,
the Heavenly Excellence of Her Heroic Virtues
and Visions, Her Most Holy Espousal and
other Events up to the Incarnation

CHAPTER I
HER PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE.
The most holy Child then, in the presence of the
Lord, made the vow of chastity and as for the rest without binding
Herself, She renounced all affection for terrestrial and created things.
She moreover resolved to obey all creatures for the sake of God. In the
fulfillment of these promises She was more punctual, fervent and
faithful than any who have ever made these vows or ever will make them.
Forthwith the clear and intuitive vision of the Divinity ceased, but She
was not immediately restored to the earth. For, remaining in the
empyrean heaven, She enjoyed another, an imaginary vision of the Lord in
a lower state of ecstasy, so that in connection with it, She saw other
mysteries.
In this secondary and imaginary vision some of the
seraphim closest to the Lord approached Her and by his command adorned
and clothed Her in the following manner. First all her senses were
illumined with an effulgent light, which filled them with grace and
beauty. Then they robed Her in a mantle or tunic of most exquisite
splendor, and girded Her with a cincture of vary-colored and transparent
stones, of flashing brilliancy, which adorned Her beyond human
comprehension. They signified the immaculate purity and the various
heroic virtues of her soul. They placed on Her also a necklace or collar
of inestimable and entrancing beauty, which contained three large
stones, symbolic of the three great virtues of faith, hope and charity;
this they hung around her neck letting it fall to her breast as if
indicating the seat of these precious virtues. They also adorned her
hands with seven rings of rare beauty whereby the Holy Ghost wished to
proclaim that He had enriched Her with his holy gifts in a most eminent
degree. In addition to all this the most holy Trinity crowned her head
with an imperial diadem, made of inestimable material and set with most
precious stones, constituting Her thereby as his Spouse and as the
Empress of heaven. In testimony whereof the white and refulgent
vestments were emblazoned with letters or figures of the finest and the
most shining gold, proclaiming: Mary, Daughter of the eternal Father,
Spouse of the Holy Ghost and Mother of the true Light. This last name or
title the heavenly Mistress did not understand; but the angels
understood it, who, lost in wonder and praise of the Author, were
assisting at this new and strange ceremony. Finally the attention of all
the angelic spirits was drawn toward the Most High and a voice proceeded
from the throne of the blessed Trinity, which, addressing the most holy
Mary, spoke to Her: "Thou shalt be our Spouse, our beloved and chosen
One among all creatures for all eternity; the angels shall serve thee
and all the nations and generations shall call thee blessed" (Luc. 1,
48).
The sovereign Child being thus attired in the court
dress of the Divinity, then celebrated a more glorious and marvelous
espousal than ever could enter the mind of the highest cherubim and
seraphim. For the Most High accepted Her as his sole and only Spouse and
conferred upon Her the highest dignity which can befall a creature; He
deposited within Her his own Divinity in the person of the Word and with
it all the treasures of grace befitting such eminence. Meanwhile the
most Humble among the humble was lost in the abyss of love and wonder
which these benefits and favors caused in Her , and in the presence of
the Lord She spoke: "Most high King and incomprehensible God, who art
Thou and who am I , that thy condescension should look upon me who am
dust, unworthy of such mercy? In Thee, my Lord, as in a clear mirror
seeing thy immutable being, I behold and understand without error my
lowliness and vileness, I admire thy immensity and deprecate my
nothingness. At the sight of Thee I am annihilated and lost in
astonishment, that the infinite Majesty should stoop to so lowly a worm,
who can merit only oblivion and contempt of all the creatures. O Lord,
my only Good, how art Thou magnified and exalted in this deed! What
marvel dost Thou cause through me in thy angelic spirits, who understand
thy infinite bounty, magnificence and mercy in raising up from the dust
her who in it is poor, and placing her among the princes (Ps. 112, 7)! I
accept Thee, O my King and my Lord, as my Spouse and I offer myself as
thy slave. Let not my understanding attend to any other object, nor my
memory hold any other image, nor my will seek other object or pleasure
than Thee, my highest Good, my true and only Love. Let not my eyes look
upon human creature, nor my faculties and senses attend upon anything
beside Thee and whatever thy Majesty shall direct. Thou alone for thy
spouse, my Beloved, and she for Thee only, who art the immutable and
eternal Good."
The Most High received with ineffable pleasure this
consent of the sovereign Princess to enter into the new espousal with
her most holy soul. As upon his True Spouse and as Mistress of all
creation, He now lavished upon Her all the treasures of his grace and
power, instructing Her to ask for whatever She desired and assuring Her
that nothing would ever be denied Her. The most humble Dove at once
proceeded to beseech the Lord with the most burning charity, to send His
Onlybegotten to the world as a remedy for mortals; that all men be
called to the true knowledge of his Divinity; that her natural parents,
Joachim and Anne, receive an increase of the loving gifts of his right
hand; that the poor and afflicted be consoled and comforted in their
troubles; and that in Herself be fulfilled the pleasure of the divine
will. These were some of the more express petitions addressed by the new
Spouse on this occasion to the blessed Trinity. And all the angelic host
sang new songs of admiration in praise of the Most High, while those
appointed by his Majesty, midst heavenly music, bore back the holy Child
from the empyrean heaven to the place in the temple, from which they had
brought Her.
In order to commence at once to put in practice what
She had promised in the presence of the Lord, She betook Herself to her
instructress and offered all that her mother, saint Anne, had left for
her comfort and sustenance, with the exception of a few books and
clothes. She requested Her to give it to the poor or use it for any
other purpose according to her pleasure, and that She command and direct
Her what She was to do. The discreet matron, (who was, as I have already
said, the prophetess Anne) by divine impulse accepted and approved of
the offering of the beautiful Child and dismissed Her entirely poor and
stripped of everything except the garments which She wore. She resolved
to take care of Her in a special manner as one destitute and poor; for
the other maidens each possessed their spending money and a certain sum
assigned and destined for their wearing apparel and for other
necessities according to their inclinations.
The holy matron, having first consulted the high
priest, also gave to the sweetest Child a rule of life. By thus
despoiling and resigning Herself the Queen and Mistress of creation
obtained a complete freedom and detachment from all creatures and from
her own Self, neither possessing nor desiring anything except only the
most ardent love of God and her own abasement and humiliation.

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
Notebook I
(continued)
However,
in all these sufferings and struggles, I was not omitting Holy Communion.
When it seemed to me that I should not communicate, I went before Holy
Communion, to the Directness and told her that I could not approach the
Sacrament, because it seemed to me that I should not do so. But she would
not permit me to omit Holy Communion, so I went, and I understand now that
it was only obedience that saved me.
The Directness herself told me later that my trials had passed quickly, "and
this solely because you were obedient, Sister; and it was through the power
of obedience that you struggled through this so bravely." It is true that it
was the Lord himself who brought me out of this torment, but my fidelity to
obedience did please Him.
Though these are frightening things, the soul should not be too fearful,
because God will never test us beyond what we are able to bear. On the other
hand, He may never send us such sufferings, but I write this because, if it
pleases the Lord to let a soul pass through such sufferings, it should not
be afraid but, insofar as it depends on the soul itself, it should remain
faithful to God. God will do a soul no harm, because He is Love itself, and
in this unfathomable love has called it into being. However when I was so
tormented, I myself did not understand this.
O my God, I have come to know that I am not of this earth; You, O Lord, have
poured this profound awareness into my soul. My communion is more with
heaven than with earth, though I in no way neglect my duties.
During those times, I had no spiritual director; I was without any kind of
guidance whatever. I begged the Lord, but He did not give me a director.
Jesus Himself has been my Master from the days of my infancy up to the
present moment. He accompanied me across all the deserts and through all
dangers. I see clearly that God alone could have led me through such great
perils unharmed, with my soul untarnished and passing victoriously through
all difficulties, immense though they were. Going out (..) Later on, the
Lord did give me a director.
After such sufferings the soul finds itself in a state of great purity of
spirit and very close to God. But I should add that during these spiritual
torments it is close to God, but it is blind. The soul's vision is plunged
into darkness, and though God is nearer than ever to the soul which is
suffering, the whole secret consists in the fact that it knows nothing of
this. The soul in fact declares that, not only has God abandoned it, but it
is the object of His hatred. With how great a malady are the eyes of the
soul afflicted! When struck by divine light, the soul affirms that this
light does not exist, although it is precisely because this divine light is
so bright that it is blinded. Yet despite all, I learned later that God is
closer to a soul at such moments than at others, because it would not be
able to endure these trials with the help of ordinary grace alone. God's
omnipotence and an extraordinary grace must be active here, for otherwise
the soul would succumb at the first blow.
O Divine Master, what happens in my soul is Your work alone! You, O Lord,
are not afraid to place the soul on the edge of a terrible precipice where
it stands, alarmed and filled with fright, and then You call it back again
to Yourself. These are Your imponderable mysteries.
When, in the midst of these interior torments, I tried to accuse myself in
confession of the smallest trifles, the priest was surprised that I had not
committed graver faults, and he said to me, "If you are as faithful as this
to God during these sufferings, this in itself is evidence to me that God is
sustaining you, Sister, with a special grace, and it is a good thing that
you do not understand this". It is a strange thing, nevertheless, that
confessors could neither understand me nor set my mind at peace concerning
these matters, until I met Father Endures and, later on, Father Sopocko.
A few words about confession and confessors. I shall speak only of what I
have experienced and gone through within my own soul. There are three things
which hinder the soul from drawing profit from confession in these
exceptional moments.
The first thing: when the confessor has little knowledge of extraordinary
ways and shows surprise if a soul discloses to him the great mysteries
worked in it by God. Such surprise frightens a sensitive soul, and it
notices that the confessor hesitates to give his opinion; and if it does
notice this, it will not be set at peace, but will have even more doubts
after confession than before, because it will sense that the confessor is
trying to set it at peace while he himself is uncertain. Or else, as has
happened to me, a confessor, unable to penetrate some of the soul's
mysteries, refuse to hear the confession, showing a certain fear when the
soul approaches the confessional.
How can a soul in this state obtain peace in the confessional when it has
become so over oversensitive to every word of the priest? In my opinion, at
times of such special trials sent by God to a soul, the priest, if he does
not understand the soul, should direct it to some other experienced and well
instructed confessor. Or else he himself should seek light in order to give
the soul what it needs, instead of downrightly denying it confession. For in
this way he is exposing the soul to a great danger; and more than one soul
may well leave the road along which God wanted it to journey. This is a
matter of great importance, for I have experienced it myself. I myself began
to waver; despite special gifts from God, and even though God himself
reassured me, I have nevertheless always wanted to have the Church's seal as
well.
The second thing: the confessor does not allow the soul to express itself
frankly, and shows impatience. The soul then falls silent and does not say
everything (it has to say) and, by this, profits nothing. It profits even
less when the confessor, without really knowing the soul, proceeds to put to
the test. Instead of helping the soul, he does it harm. The soul is aware
that the confessor does not know it, because he did not allow it to lay
itself open fully as regards both its graces and its misery. And so the test
is ill-adapted. I have been submitted to some tests at which I have had to
laugh.
I will express this better thus: The confessor is the doctor of the soul,
but how can a doctor prescribe a suitable remedy if he does not know the
nature of the sickness? Never will he be able to do so. For either the
remedy will not produce the desired effect, or else it will be too strong
and will aggravate the illness, and sometimes - God forbid - even bring
about death. I am speaking from my own experience because, in certain
instances, it was the Lord himself who directly sustained me.
The third thing; it also happens sometimes that the confessor makes light of
little things. There is nothing little in the spiritual life. Sometimes a
seemingly insignificant thing will disclose a matter of great consequence
and will be for the confessor a beam of light which helps him to get to know
the soul. Many spiritual undertones are concealed in little things.
A magnificent building will never rise if we reject the insignificant
bricks. God demands great purity of certain souls, and so He gives them a
deeper knowledge of their own misery. Illuminated by light from on high, the
soul can better know what pleases God and what does not. Sin depends upon
the degree of knowledge and light that exists within the soul. The same is
true of imperfections. Although the soul knows that it is only sin in the
strict sense of the term which pertains to the sacrament of penance, but
these petty things are of great importance to a soul which is tending to
sanctity, and the confessor must not treat them lightly. The patience and
kindness of the confessor open the way to the innermost secrets of the soul.
The soul, unconsciously as it were, reveals its abysmal depth and feels
stronger and more resistant; it fights with greater courage and tries to do
things better because it knows it must give an account of them.
I will mention one more thing regarding the confessor. It is his duty to
occasionally put to the test, to try, to exercise, to learn whether he is
dealing with straw, with iron or with pure gold. Each of these three types
of souls needs different kinds of training. The confessor must - and this is
absolutely necessary - form a clear judgment of each soul in order to know
how heavy a burden it can carry at certain times, in certain circumstances,
or in particular situations. As for myself, it was only later on, after many
(negative) experiences that when I saw that I was not understood, I no
longer laid bare my soul or allowed my peace to be disturbed. But this
happened only when all these graces had already been submitted to the
judgment of a wise, well - instructed and experienced confessor. Now I know
what to go by in certain cases.

Papal Message for Easter
"The Resurrection Is Not a Theory, but a Historical Reality"
VATICAN CITY, APRIL 12, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is a Vatican translation of Benedict XVI's Easter message delivered today at midday before he imparted his blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city of Rome and the world).
* * *
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and throughout the world,
From the depths of my heart, I wish all of you a blessed Easter. To quote Saint Augustine, "Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra – the resurrection of the Lord is our hope" (Sermon 261:1). With these words, the great Bishop explained to the faithful that Jesus rose again so that we, though destined to die, should not despair, worrying that with death life is completely finished; Christ is risen to give us hope (cf. ibid.).
Indeed, one of the questions that most preoccupies men and women is this: what is there after death? To this mystery today’s solemnity allows us to respond that death does not have the last word, because Life will be victorious at the end. This certainty of ours is based not on simple human reasoning, but on a historical fact of faith: Jesus Christ, crucified and buried, is risen with his glorified body. Jesus is risen so that we too, believing in him, may have eternal life. This proclamation is at the heart of the Gospel message. As Saint Paul vigorously declares: "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain." He goes on to say: "If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied" (1 Cor 15:14,19). Ever since the dawn of Easter a new Spring of hope has filled the world; from that day forward our resurrection has begun, because Easter does not simply signal a moment in history, but the beginning of a new condition: Jesus is risen not because his memory remains alive in the hearts of his disciples, but because he himself lives in us, and in him we can already savour the joy of eternal life.
The resurrection, then, is not a theory, but a historical reality revealed by the man Jesus Christ by means of his "Passover", his "passage", that has opened a "new way" between heaven and earth (cf. Heb 10:20). It is neither a myth nor a dream, it is not a vision or a utopia, it is not a fairy tale, but it is a singular and unrepeatable event: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary, who at dusk on Friday was taken down from the Cross and buried, has victoriously left the tomb. In fact, at dawn on the first day after the Sabbath, Peter and John found the tomb empty. Mary Magdalene and the other women encountered the risen Jesus. On the way to Emmaus the two disciples recognized him at the breaking of the bread. The Risen One appeared to the Apostles that evening in the Upper Room and then to many other disciples in Galilee.
The proclamation of the Lord’s Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live. I am referring particularly to materialism and nihilism, to a vision of the world that is unable to move beyond what is scientifically verifiable, and retreats cheerlessly into a sense of emptiness which is thought to be the definitive destiny of human life. It is a fact that if Christ had not risen, the "emptiness" would be set to prevail. If we take away Christ and his resurrection, there is no escape for man, and every one of his hopes remains an illusion. Yet today is the day when the proclamation of the Lord’s resurrection vigorously bursts forth, and it is the answer to the recurring question of the sceptics, that we also find in the book of Ecclesiastes: "Is there a thing of which it is said, ‘See, this is new’?" (Ec 1:10). We answer, yes: on Easter morning, everything was renewed. "Mors et vita, duello conflixere mirando: dux vitae mortuus, regnat vivus – Death and life have come face to face in a tremendous duel: the Lord of life was dead, but now he lives triumphant." This is what is new! A newness that changes the lives of those who accept it, as in the case of the saints. This, for example, is what happened to Saint Paul.
Many times, in the context of the Pauline year, we have had occasion to meditate on the experience of the great Apostle. Saul of Tarsus, the relentless persecutor of Christians, encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, and was "conquered" by him. The rest we know. In Paul there occurred what he would later write about to the Christians of Corinth: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come" (2 Cor 5:17). Let us look at this great evangelizer, who with bold enthusiasm and apostolic zeal brought the Gospel to many different peoples in the world of that time. Let his teaching and example inspire us to go in search of the Lord Jesus. Let them encourage us to trust him, because that sense of emptiness, which tends to intoxicate humanity, has been overcome by the light and the hope that emanate from the resurrection. The words of the Psalm have truly been fulfilled: "Darkness is not darkness for you, and the night is as clear as the day" (Ps 139 [138]:12). It is no longer emptiness that envelops all things, but the loving presence of God. The very reign of death has been set free, because the Word of life has even reached the "underworld", carried by the breath of the Spirit (v. 8).
If it is true that death no longer has power over man and over the world, there still remain very many, in fact too many signs of its former dominion. Even if through Easter, Christ has destroyed the root of evil, he still wants the assistance of men and women in every time and place who help him to affirm his victory using his own weapons: the weapons of justice and truth, mercy, forgiveness and love. This is the message which, during my recent Apostolic Visit to Cameroon and Angola, I wanted to convey to the entire African continent, where I was welcomed with such great enthusiasm and readiness to listen. Africa suffers disproportionately from the cruel and unending conflicts, often forgotten, that are causing so much bloodshed and destruction in several of her nations, and from the growing number of her sons and daughters who fall prey to hunger, poverty and disease. I shall repeat the same message emphatically in the Holy Land, to which I shall have the joy of travelling in a few weeks from now. Reconciliation – difficult, but indispensable – is a precondition for a future of overall security and peaceful coexistence, and it can only be achieved through renewed, persevering and sincere efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. My thoughts move outwards from the Holy Land to neighbouring countries, to the Middle East, to the whole world. At a time of world food shortage, of financial turmoil, of old and new forms of poverty, of disturbing climate change, of violence and deprivation which force many to leave their homelands in search of a less precarious form of existence, of the ever-present threat of terrorism, of growing fears over the future, it is urgent to rediscover grounds for hope. Let no one draw back from this peaceful battle that has been launched by Christ’s Resurrection. For as I said earlier, Christ is looking for men and women who will help him to affirm his victory using his own weapons: the weapons of justice and truth, mercy, forgiveness and love.
Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra! The resurrection of Christ is our hope! This the Church proclaims today with joy. She announces the hope that is now firm and invincible because God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. She communicates the hope that she carries in her heart and wishes to share with all people in every place, especially where Christians suffer persecution because of their faith and their commitment to justice and peace. She invokes the hope that can call forth the courage to do good, even when it costs, especially when it costs. Today the Church sings "the day that the Lord has made", and she summons people to joy. Today the Church calls in prayer upon Mary, Star of Hope, asking her to guide humanity towards the safe haven of salvation which is the heart of Christ, the paschal Victim, the Lamb who has "redeemed the world", the Innocent one who has "reconciled us sinners with the Father". To him, our victorious King, to him who is crucified and risen, we sing out with joy our Alleluia!
