"God so loved the world that he gave us his
only Son"
Scripture: John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God sent
the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world
might be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not condemned;
he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not
believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the
judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness
rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one who
does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his
deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does what is true comes to the
light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in
God.
Meditation: Do you know the love which surpasses all else? A
true lover holds nothing back but gives the best that can be offered,
even everything in their possession for the beloved. God proved his love
for us by giving us the best he had to offer – his only begotten Son who
freely gave himself as an offering to God for our sake and as the
atoning sacrifice for our sin and the sin of the world. Abraham's
willing sacrifice of his only son, Isaac prefigures the perfect offering
and sacrifice of God's beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. This passage
in the gospel of John tells us of the great breadth and width of God's
love. Not an excluding love for just a few or for a single nation, but a
redemptive love that embraces the whole world, and a personal love for
each and every individual whom God has created. God is a loving Father
who cannot rest until his wandering children have returned home to him.
Saint Augustine says, God loves each one of us as if there were only
one of us to love. God gives us the freedom to choose whom and what
we will love.
Jesus shows us the paradox of love and judgment. We can love the
darkness of sin and unbelief or we can love the light of God's truth,
beauty, and goodness. If our love is guided by what is true, and good
and beautiful then we will choose for God and love him above all else.
What we love shows what we prefer. Do you love God above all else? Does
he take first place in your life, in your thoughts, and actions?
"Lord Jesus Christ, your love is better than life itself. May your
love consume and transform my life that I may desire you above all else.
Help me to love what you love, to desire what you desire, and to reject
what you reject".
Psalm 34:2-9
2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and be
glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my
fears.
5 Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all
his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers
them.
8 O taste and see that the LORD is good! Happy is the man who takes
refuge in him!

UNIVERSAL CHURCH/WORLD EVENTS |
TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF CONSIGNMENT OF WYD CROSS
VATICAN CITY, 21 APR 2009 (VIS) - A communique released by the Pontifical Council for the Laity announces that at the general audience tomorrow, Wednesday 22 April, the Pope will recall the 25th anniversary of the consignment of the World Youth Day cross by John Paul II to young people of the world.
During the Holy Year of Redemption (1983-1984), John Paul II ordered a simple wooden cross be erected next to the altar in St. Peter's Basilica. At the close of the Holy Year, exactly 25 years ago, he consigned that same cross to the youth of the world, saying: "Take this into the world as a sign of the Lord Jesus' love for humankind, and tell everyone that only through Christ, Who died and rose again, comes salvation and redemption".
The communique goes on: "The invitation was taken literally by the young people of the San Lorenzo International Youth Centre. ... And since then, for twenty-five years, the cross has never ceased to travel the world, visiting above all the countries in which World Youth Days have been held, but carrying a sign of hope also to other places such as the continent of Africa, where it was welcomed with great devotion by thousands of young people". Furthermore, "from 2003, in accordance with the wishes of Pope John Paul II, the cross has been accompanied on its pilgrimage by the Marian icon 'Salus Popoli Romani', as a sign of Mary's maternal protection".
During tomorrow's general audience, Benedict XVI will once again consign the cross to young people of the San Lorenzo Centre, in the presence of Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the Vatican dicastery responsible for organising World Youth Days. At the end of the audience the cross and the icon of Mary will be borne in procession to the San Lorenzo Centre, pausing in St. Peter's Square so those present can venerate them. That afternoon the procession will pass through the historic centre of Rome as far as Piazza Navona. The celebration of the anniversary will conclude at 5 p.m. at the San Lorenzo Centre with an hour of adoration, followed by Mass.
The cross, known as the "WYD Cross", will then leave for a brief pilgrimage through Poland before moving on to Spain where it will be taken through all the dioceses of the country in preparation for the 26th World Youth Day, due to be held in Madrid in August 2011.

April 22, 2009
St. Adalbert of Prague

(956-97)
Opposition to the Good News of Jesus did not discourage Adalbert, who is
now remembered with great honor in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary
and Germany.
Born to a noble family in Bohemia, he received part of his education
from St. Adalbert of Magdeburg. At the age of 27 he was chosen as bishop
of Prague. Those who resisted his program of clerical reform forced him
into exile eight years later.
In time the people of Prague requested his return as their bishop.
Within a short time, however, he was exiled again after excommunicating
those who violated the right of sanctuary by dragging a woman accused of
adultery from a church and murdering her.
After a short ministry in Hungary, he went to preach the Good News to
people living near the Baltic Sea. He and two companions were martyred
by pagan priests in that region. Adalbert's body was immediately
ransomed and buried in Gniezno cathedral (Poland). In the mid-11th
century his body was moved to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
Comment:
Preaching the Good News can be dangerous work whether the audience is
already baptized or not. Adalbert fearlessly preached Jesus' gospel and
received a martyr's crown for his efforts. Similar zeal has created
modern martyrs in many places, especially in Central and South America.
Some of those martyrs grew up in areas once evangelized by Adalbert.
Quote:
“God our Father, you have honored the Church with the victorious witness
of St. Adalbert, who died for his faith. As he imitated the suffering
and death of the Lord, may we follow in his footsteps and come to
eternal joy” (adapted from the Common of a Martyr in the Easter season).

CHAPTER II.
INSTRUCTION GIVEN BY THE QUEEN CONCERNING RELIGIOUS VOWS.
HER FIRST
YEARS IN THE TEMPLE.
The priest and her teacher Anne felt within
themselves a great enlightenment and a divine impulse to attend
especially to this heavenly Child and to care for Her more than the
other maidens. Conferring with themselves about this great esteem, with
which they had been inspired, though ignorant of the mystery by which it
came to them, they resolved to devote particular attention to her
guidance and assistance. But as their care could extend only to the
exterior and visible actions, they were far from suspecting the interior
acts and inspirations of her heart, for over these the Most High watched
with singular protection and favor. Thus the pure heart of the Princess
of heaven remained free to advance and grow in interior vision, without
losing one instant, in which She did not reach what is highest and most
excellent in virtue.
The priest also gave Her a rule for her occupations
and said: "My Daughter thou wilt assist at the exercises of divine
praise and song in honor of the Lord with all reverence and devotion,
and always pray to the Most High for the necessities of his holy temple
and of his people, and for the coming of the Messias. At eight 0' clock
thou wilt retire for sleep and at the beginning of dawn thou wilt arise
in order to praise the Lord until the third hour (this hour corresponds
to our nine o'clock in the morning). From the third hour until evening
thou wilt occupy thyself in some manual works, in order that thou mayest
be instructed in all things. At meals, of which thou wilt partake after
thy exercise, observe befitting moderation. Then thou wilt go to hear
the instructions of thy teacher; the rest of the day thou wilt engage
thyself in the reading of holy Scriptures, and in all things be humble,
affable, and obedient to the commands of thy instructress,"
The most holy Child remained on her knees, while She
listened to the words of the priest and then asked his blessing; having
kissed his hand and the hand of her mistress, She proposed in her heart
to observe the order of life assigned Her during her stay in the temple
and as long as they should not command her otherwise. And She, who was
the Mistress of sanctity, fulfilled their orders as if She were the
least of all the scholars. Her desires and her most ardent love impelled
Her to many other external exercises, which they had not included in
their orders; but with regard to these She subjected Herself to the
minister of the Lord, preferring the sacrifice of perfect and holy
obedience to the high dictates of her own fervor. She knew, as Mistress
of all perfection, that the divine will is more surely fulfilled by the
humble acquiescence of obedience, than in following the highest
aspirations to other virtues. By this rare example let souls, and
especially those in the religious state, learn not to follow their own
effervescences and whims contrary to obedience and the will of their
superiors; for in the latter God make known to us his desire and
pleasure, whereas in the former we seek only our own fancies; in the
superiors God himself operates, in ourselves (if we work contrary to
their orders), temptations, blind passion and deceit is active.
In the performance of works not commanded Her our
Queen and Lady distinguished Herself from other maidens by asking her
teacher to be allowed to serve them all and be engaged in the humble
occupation of scrubbing and cleaning the rooms and of washing the
dishes. Although this seemed extraordinary, especially in one of the
firstborn children, who were treated with greater consideration and
respect, yet the incomparable humility of the heavenly Princess could
not be restrained or confined by any consideration of what was due to
her position, but reached out for the most humble occupations. With such
an eager humility She knew how to gain time and opportunity for doing
such work, that She was beforehand in assuming the tasks of others. By
means of her infused science She understood all the mysteries and
ceremonies of the temple; but She was anxious to learn them also by
study and practice, as if She were ignorant of them, nor did She ever
fail in any ceremony or duty, no matter how small. She was most eager
for humiliation and most submissive in her selfcontempt; every morning
and evening She asked the blessing of her teacher and kissed her hand,
and the same She did whenever She was ordered or was permitted to
perform works of humility. Sometimes, when it was allowed Her, She
kissed her feet with profound humility.
The sovereign Princess was so docile, so sweet and
friendly in her actions, so ready to serve and so eager and diligent in
humbling Herself, so anxious to show kindness and esteem toward all the
maidens in the temple, obeying them as if each had been Her Mistress,
that She ravished all the hearts. By Her ineffable and heavenly prudence
She proceeded in all her actions in such a manner, that She never lost
an occasion for engaging in lowly work, in humble service of her
companions, and in the fulfillment of the divine pleasure.

Divine Mercy In my soul
NOTEBOOK II
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook II
(1)
J.M.J.
The mercy of the Lord I will sing forever,
Before all the people I will sing it,
For it is God’s greatest attribute
And for us an unending miracle.
You gush forth from the Divine Trinity,
But from one single womb filled with love.
The mercy of the Lord will be revealed in the soul
In all its fullness, when the veil falls.
From the fountain of Your Mercy, O Lord,
Flows all happiness and life,
And thus, all creatures and the whole of creation
Sing out in ecstasy a song of mercy.
The bowels of God’s mercy are opened for us
Through the life of Jesus, stretched on the Cross.
O sinner, you must not doubt or despair,
But trust in mercy, for you also can become holy.
Two streams in the form of rays
Have gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus,
not for angels, nor cherubim, nor seraphim,
but for the salvation of sinful man.

Cardinal Pell Responds to Media Criticism of Pope
"Choice, Not Condoms, Make the Difference With AIDS"
SYDNEY, Australia, APRIL 21, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is an article by Cardinal George Pell, archbishop of Sydney, that appeared Saturday in the Sydney Morning Herald, responding to a journalist's criticism of him and the Pope.
In a television interview, the cardinal expressed support for Benedict XVI's statements on condoms as an insufficient means to fight AIDS. On April 11, a herald journalist criticized the statements in an article titled "Pell rides papal bandwagon of death." The following is Cardinal Pell's response.
* * *
Choice, not condoms, make the difference with AIDS
By Cardinal George Pell
On St Patrick's Day, Pope Benedict spoke about the Catholic Church's teachings and the spread of AIDS in Africa. His comments provoked a storm of indignation, much of it genuine if uninformed, but a deal of it ferocious and disingenuous. It helps to be clear about what he said.
The Pope rejected the notion that the Catholic attitude was unrealistic and ineffective, adding: "If there is no human dimension, if Africans do not help [by responsible behavior], the problem cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms; on the contrary, they increase it."
During an Easter television interview, I supported Pope Benedict's comments. I said: "I agree with him totally [about condoms] because they're encouraging promiscuity, because they're encouraging irresponsibility." I also said: "The idea that you can solve a great spiritual and health crisis like AIDS with a few mechanical contraptions like condoms is ridiculous."
My comments, too, prompted a reaction, including one from the Herald's David Marr, who galloped into the fray to defend the sexual revolution against what the Pope and I had said. He even mentioned Africa a couple of times. "How many good Catholics will die in Africa and the Philippines," he asks, before they learn?
At the heart of Marr's position is a fundamental misconception, which he states as follows: "And we know in our hearts -- and every reputable study confirms -- that the church's call for abstinence is useless."
In fact, the studies confirm that behavior modification is possible and is occurring. In Cameroon the percentage of young people having sex before the age of 15 has gone down from 35 percent to 14 percent, United Nations AIDS said last year. Uganda has had a 70 percent decline in HIV prevalence since the early 1990s, linked to a 60 percent reduction in casual sex, says a 2004 report in Science. Similar evidence exists in Africa, from Ethiopia to Malawi.
Other studies support my claim that condoms encourage promiscuity and irresponsibility. UN AIDS has found that even when people use condoms consistently, something goes wrong about 10 percent of the time. Condoms give users an exaggerated sense of safety, so that they sometimes engage in "risk compensation." In one Ugandan study, gains in condom use seem to have been offset by increases in the number of sex partners.
Pope Benedict was right to point out that the human dimension in sexual activity is crucial. We are not automatons, slaves to animal instinct. Education campaigns focusing on fewer partners, less casual
sex and less use of sex workers have been key to reducing infection rates.
Earlier this year, the British Medical Journal reported: "In numerous large studies, concerted efforts to promote use of condoms has consistently failed to control rates of sexually transmitted infection," even in Canada, Sweden and Switzerland.
The response of critics to the Pope's comments have been classic examples of diversionary tactics; blame someone else in case people begin to understand that your solution is a significant cause of the problem.
To blame Catholics and Pope Benedict for the spread of HIV/AIDS requires proof that while people are ignoring the first, essential Christian requirement to be chaste before and within marriage, they are slavishly obedient to a second requirement not to use condoms. I doubt anyone thinks that is realistically the case.
Catholic teaching is opposed to adultery, fornication and homosexual intercourse, even with condoms, not because it denies condoms offer health protection, but because traditional Christian moral teaching believes all extra-marital intercourse contradicts the proper meaning of love and sexuality.
Christ called Christians to a different way of living, to a purity of heart where even looking on a woman with aggressive and disordered desire (lust) is wrong.
At least 25 percent of the services and care for people with HIV/AIDS in Africa is provided by the Catholic Church. While the role of a church is different from government, which has to legislate and organize for people of all religions as well as those without, both are required to respect the evidence and good moral values in the programs they deliver.
Catholics are not obliged to protest publicly against every harm minimization program, even when the church urges her members not to participate. In the same way, governments and non-Catholic aid agencies can and will continue to hand out condoms in HIV/AIDS programs, although the evidence suggests they may on balance be exacerbating the problem.
But all of us who want to help prevent and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS need to respect the evidence about what helps and what doesn't. And the evidence is that it's not condoms which make the crucial difference, but the choices people make about how they use the gift of sexuality.
