“ He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is
that bears much fruit”
Scripture: John 15:1-8
1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every
branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that
does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are
already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in
me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it
abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the
vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is
that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If a man
does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the
branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you abide
in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be
done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much
fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.
Meditation: Why does Jesus speak of himself as the true
vine? The image of the vine was a rich one for the Jews since the
land of Israel was covered with numerous vineyards. It had religious
connotations to it as well. Isaiah spoke of the house of Israel as
“the vineyard of the Lord” (Isaiah 5:7). Jeremiah said that God had
planted Israel “as his choice vine” (Jeremiah 2:21). While the
vine became a symbol of Israel as a nation, it also was used in the
scriptures as a sign of degeneration. Isaiah’s prophecy spoke of Israel
as a vineyard which “yielded wild grapes” (see Isaiah 5:1-7).
Jeremiah said that Israel had become a “degenerate and wild vine”
(Jeremiah 2:21). When Jesus calls himself the true vine he makes
clear that no one can claim their spiritual inheritance through
association with a particular people or bloodline. Rather, it is only
through Jesus Christ that one can become grafted into the true “vineyard
of the Lord”.
Jesus offers true life – the abundant life which comes from God and
which results in great fruitfulness. How does the vine become fruitful?
The vinedresser must carefully prune the vine before it can bear good
fruit. Vines characteristically have two kinds of branches – those which
bear fruit and those which don’t. The non-bearing branches must be
carefully pruned back in order for the vine to conserve its strength for
bearing good fruit. Jesus used this image to describe the kind of life
he produces in those who are united with him – the fruit of
“righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).
Jesus says there can be no fruit in our lives apart from him. The fruit
he speaks of here is the fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians
5:22-23).
There is a simple truth here: We are either fruit-bearing or
non-fruit-bearing. There is no in-between. But the bearing of healthy
fruit requires drastic pruning. The Lord promises that we will bear much
fruit if we abide in him and allow him to purify us. Do you trust in the
Lord's abiding presence with you?
"Lord Jesus, may I be one with you in all that I say and do. Draw me
close that I may glorify you and bear fruit for your kingdom. Inflame my
heart with your love and remove from it anything that would make me
ineffective or unfruitful in loving and serving you as my All."
Psalm 122:1-5
1 I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the
LORD!"
2 Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem!
3 Jerusalem, built as a city which is bound firmly together,
4 to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, as was decreed for
Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD.

Latin Patriarch's Welcome Address to Benedict XVI
"You Stand Before a Small Flock that Is Shrinking"
JERUSALEM, MAY 12, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is the welcoming address the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Fouad Twal, gave to Benedict XVI at the beginning of Mass in the Valley of Josaphat, in front of the basilica of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives.

Holy Father,
The Church of Jerusalem fervently welcomes you to this city where Jesus Christ was welcomed by the crowd shouting "Hosanna in the Highest, Hosanna to the one who comes in the name of the Lord" (Mt. 21:9). Welcome to the city, where He obtained the victory over sin and death, and salvation for those who have faith in him. Here, with you, the Church takes loving care of and comes to pray at those places, where Our Lord carried out his awesome tasks of redemption. These sites are witnesses of the past and the truth of our present lives.
Just a few yards from here, Jesus said to his most favored disciples "Remain here, and watch with me" (Mt. 26:39). But these same disciples closed their eyes, not losing sleep over Jesus' agony, only a short distance away in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Holy Father, today, in many ways, the situation has not changed: around us, we have the agony of the Palestinian people, who dream of living in a free and independent Palestinian State, but have not found its realization; and the agony of the Israeli people, who dream of a normal life in peace and security and, despite all their military and mass media might, have not found its realization.
And the international community, just like Jesus' beloved disciples, stands apart, eyes drooping with indifference, unconcerned with the agony of the Holy Land, which has gone on for sixty-one years, and does not seriously rouse itself, to find a just solution. In this Valley of Jehoshaphat, a valley of tears, we raise our prayer for the realization of the dreams of these two peoples. We raise our prayer for Jerusalem, to be shared by the two peoples and three religions.
On this very Mount of Olives, Jesus wept in vain over Jerusalem, and continues to do so, with the disillusioned refugees, without any hope of return, with the widows of the victims of violence and the many families in this city, who every day see their homes demolished because, it is said, "they were built illegally," when the whole situation is illegal and still looking for a solution
Above where we stand now, Our Lord cried out: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children -- all your children, Jews, Christians and Muslim -- and you would not!" (Lk 13:34)
Dear Holy Father, we ask you to see and understand the lives of your poor children here, and to strengthen our faith and hope. Your visit brings the awareness and solidarity of the entire Church, and the attention of the world to this region, these peoples, their story, their struggles and hopes, their smiles and tears.
For one who suffers -- someone infirm, a refugee, a prisoner or one bearing the weight of injustice -- the greatest distress, is to think that he has been forgotten and that no one sees, knows or is moved by what he undergoes. Your visit today does much to comfort hearts and to say to all, that the God of compassion and those who believe in Him are not blind, have not forgotten and are not unmoved.
Your Holiness, you are the successor to St. Peter, charged by the Lord to "strengthen [his] brethren" in their faith. (Lk 22:32) This we entreat you then, and we cry out with the Apostles in the Gospel, "Increase our faith!" (Lk 17:25)
Holy Father, you stand before a small flock that is shrinking, that suffers from emigration, largely due to the effects of the unjust occupation and all its humiliation, violence and hatred. Yet we know that the faith is the victory that overcomes the world, (1 Jn 5:4) and that through it, we are able to see and recognize Jesus Christ in every person. With Jesus and in Jesus, we can enjoy here and now the peace that the world can neither give nor take out of our hearts. This peace means serenity, faith, a welcoming spirit and the joy of living and working in this Land.
Therefore we take advantage of your blessed presence among us to cry out with the suffering father in the Gospel who begged Jesus to free his son from long lasting torments "I do believe, help my unbelief."
Holy Father, as we welcome you as the successor to St. Peter, help our unbelief. Pray with us now to our Heavenly Father for all the inhabitants of the Holy Land; and to the Mother of Sorrows, who did not shirk from standing beneath the cross of her suffering son, that she help us have her same faith in God's loving providence, accepting all even before we understand.
Oh Lord, Strengthen our faith!

Our Lady of Fatima

Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese children received
apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles
north of Lisbon. (See February 20 entry for Blessed Jacinta and
Francisco Marto). Mary asked the children to pray the rosary for world
peace, for the end of World War I, for sinners and for the conversion of
Russia.
Mary gave the children three secrets. Since Francisco died in 1919 and
Jacinta the following year, Lucia, who later became a Carmelite nun,
revealed the first secret in 1927, concerning devotion to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary. The second secret was a vision of hell.
Pope John Paul II directed the Holy See's Secretary of State to reveal
the third secret in 2000; it spoke of a 'bishop in white' who was shot
by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows into him. Many
people linked this to the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul
II in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981.
The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in
1930; it was added to the Church's worldwide calendar in 2002. Sister
Lucia died in 2005 at the age of 97.
Comment:
The message of Fatima is simple: Pray. Unfortunately, some people—not
Sister Lucia—have distorted these revelations, making them into an
apocalyptic event for which they are now the only reliable interpreters.
They have, for example, claimed that Mary's request that the world be
consecrated to her has been ignored. Sister Lucia has agreed that Pope
John Paul II's public consecration in St. Peter's Square on March 25,
1984, fulfilled Mary's request. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the
Faith prepared a June 26, 2000, document explaining the “third secret”
(available at www.vatican.va).
Mary is perfectly honored when people generously imitate her response
“Let it be done to me as you say” (Luke 1:38). Mary can never be seen as
a rival to Jesus or to the Church's teaching authority, as exercised by
the college of bishops united with the bishop of Rome.

which go to the heart of human events and which, to the surprise of
believers and non-believers alike, play their part in the unfolding of
history. These manifestations can never contradict the content of faith,
and must therefore have their focus in the core of Christ's
proclamation: the Father's love which leads men and women to conversion
and bestows the grace required to abandon oneself to him with filial
devotion. This too is the message of Fatima which, with its urgent call
to conversion and penance, draws us to the heart of the Gospel” (The

CHAPTER VII.
HER WONDERFUL ESPOUSAL WITH SAINT JOSEPH.
At the age of thirteen and a half years, having grown
considerably for her age, our most charming Princess, most pure Mary,
had another abstractive vision of the Divinity of the same order and
kind as those already described. In this vision, we might say, happened
something similar to that which the holy Scriptures relate of Abraham,
when God commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, the only
pledge of all his hopes. God tempted Abraham, says Moses (Gen. 12, 12),
trying and probing the promptness of his obedience in order to reward
it. We can say the same thing of our great Lady, that God tried Her in
this vision, by commanding Her to enter the state of matrimony. Thence
we can also understand the truth of the words: How inscrutable are the
judgments of the Lord and how exalted are his ways and thoughts above
our own (Rom. 11, 33)! As distant as heaven is from earth, were the
thoughts of most holy Mary from the plans which the Most High now made
known to Her, by commanding Her to accept a husband for her protection
and company; for as far as depended upon her will She had desired and
resolved during all her life not to have a husband and She had often
repeated and renewed the vow of chastity, which She had taken at such a
premature age.
Nevertheless at this unexpected command the most
prudent Virgin suspended her judgment, and preserved the calmness of her
hope and belief more perfectly than Abraham. Hoping against hope (Rom.
4, 18), She made answer to the Lord saying: "Eternal God and
incomprehensible Majesty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things
contained therein, Thou, 0 Lord, who weighest the winds (Job 28, 25),
and by thy commands settest bounds to the sea and subjectest all
creation to thy will, canst dispose of me, thy worthless wormlet,
according to thy pleasure, without making me fail in that which I have
promised to Thee; and if it be not displeasing to Thee, my good Lord, I
confirm and ratify anew my desire to remain chaste during all my life
and to have Thee for my Lord and Spouse; and since my only duty as a
creature is to obey Thee, see Thou to it, my Spouse, that according to
thy Providence I may escape from this predicament in which thy holy love
places me." There was, however, some uneasiness in the most chaste
maiden Mary, as far as her inferior nature was concerned, just as
happened afterwards at the message of the archangel Gabriel (Luke 1, 8);
yet, though She felt some sadness, it did not hinder Her from practicing
the most heroic obedience which until then had fallen to her lot, and
She resigned Herself entirely into the hand of the Lord. His Majesty
answered her: "Mary, let not thy heart be disturbed, for thy resignation
is acceptable to Me and my powerful arm is not subject to laws; by my
disposition that will happen, which is most proper for Thee."
Consoled only by this vague promise of the Lord, most
holy Mary recovered from her vision and returned to her ordinary state.
Left between doubt and hope by the divine command and promise, She was
full of solicitude, for the Lord intended that She should multiply Her
tearful sentiments of love and confidence, of faith, humility, of
obedience, of purest chastity and of other virtues, impossible to
enumerate. In the meanwhile, while our great Lady applied Herself to
vigilant prayer, and to her resigned and prudent sighs and solicitude,
God spoke in sleep to the high priest, saint Simeon, and commanded him
to arrange for the marriage of Mary, the daughter of Joachim and Anne of
Nazareth; since He regarded Her with special care and love. The holy
priest answered, asking what was his will in regard to the person, whom
the maiden Mary was to marry and to whom She was to give Herself as
Spouse. The Lord instructed Him to call together the other priests and
learned persons and to tell them that this Maiden was left alone and an
orphan and that She did not desire to be married; but that, as it was a
custom for the firstborn maidens not to leave the temple without being
provided for, it was proper She should be married to whomever it seemed
good to them.
The most prudent Virgin, with a countenance
betokening virginal modesty, answered the priest with great composure
and humility: "Sir, as far as my inclinations are concerned, I desire to
preserve perpetual chastity during all my life; for I wished to dedicate
myself to God in the service of this holy temple in return for the great
blessings which I have received in it; I never had the intention or the
desire to enter the state of matrimony, since I consider myself
incapable of fulfilling the duties connected with it. This was my
inclination, but thou, my master, who art to me in place of God, wilt
teach me what is according to his holy Will," "My Daughter," answered
the priest, "thy holy desires are acceptable to the Lord; but remember,
that no maiden of Israel abstains from marriage as long as we expect the
coming of the Messias conformably to the divine prophecies. Therefore
all who obtain issue of children among our people, esteem themselves
happy and blessed. In the matrimonial state Thou canst serve God truly
and in great perfection; and in order that Thou mayest obtain a
companion according to the heart of God and who will be conformable to
thy wishes, we will pray to the Lord, as I have told Thee, asking Him to
single out a husband for Thee, who shall be pleasing to Him and of the
line of David; do Thou also pray continually for the same favor, in
order that the Most High may favor Thee and may direct us all."

September 24, 1936.
Mother superior [Irene] ordered me to say one decade of the rosary in place
of all the other exercises, and to go to bed at once. As soon as I lay down
I fell asleep, for I was very tired. But a while later, I was awakened by
suffering. It was such a great suffering that it prevented me from making
even the slightest movement; I could not even swallow my saliva. This lasted
for about three hours. I thought of waking up the novice sister who shared
my room, but then I thought, “She cannot give me any help, so let her sleep.
It would be a pity to wake her.” I resigned myself completely to the will of
God and thought that the day of my death, so much desired, had come. It was
an occasion for me to unite myself with Jesus suffering on the Cross. Beyond
that, I was unable to pray. When the suffering ceased, I began to perspire.
But I still could not move, as the pain would return at each attempt. In the
morning, I felt very tired, though I felt no further physical pain. Still, I
could not get up to attend Mass. I thought to myself, if after such
suffering death does not come, then how great the sufferings of death must
be!
Jesus, you know that I love suffering and want to drain the cup of suffering
to the last drop; and yet, my nature experienced a slight shudder and fear.
Quickly, however, my trust in the infinite mercy of God was awakened in all
its force, and everything else had to give way before it, like a shadow
retreating before the sun’s rays. O Jesus, how great is your goodness! Your
infinite goodness, so well known to me, enables me to bravely look death
itself in the eye. I know that nothing will happen to me without God’s
permission. I desire to glorify your infinite mercy during my life, at the
hour of death, in the resurrection and throughout eternity.
My Jesus, my strength, my peace, my repose; my soul bathes daily in the rays
of Your mercy. There is not a moment in my life when I do not experience
Your mercy, O God, I count on nothing in my while life, but only on Your
infinite mercy. It is the guiding thread of my life, O Lord. My soul is
filled with God’s mercy.
Oh, how sorely Jesus is hurt by the ingratitude of a chosen soul! What a
martyrdom it is for His unspeakable love! God loves us with the entire
infinite Being that He is; and imagine, a miserable particle of dust scorns
that love! My heart bursts with pain when I see this ingratitude.
On one occasion, I heard these words: My
daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that
the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for
poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I
pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of
My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion
shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are
open all the divine floodgates through which graces flow. Let no soul fear
to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great
that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout
all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of
My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate my
love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very
depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the
first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the
Fount of My Mercy.
Once, when I was very tired and in much pain, I
told Mother superior [Irene] about it and received the answer that I should
get used to suffering. I listened to everything that Mother told me, and
then I went out. Our mother superior has great love of neighbor and
especially great love for the sick sisters, as everyone knows. And yet, as
regards me, it is extraordinary that the Lord Jesus has permitted that she
not understand me and that she test me much in this respect.
On this particular day, when I was feeling so bad and still went to work,
every now and then I would feel sick. It was so very hot that, even without
working a person felt terrible, not to mention what it was like when one had
to work while suffering. So, before noon, I straightened up from my work,
looked up to the sky with great trust and said to the Lord, “Jesus, cover
the sun, for I cannot stand this heat any longer.” And, O wonder, at that
very moment a white cloud covered the sun and, from then on, the heat became
less intense. When a little while later I began to reproach myself that I
did not bear the heat, but begged for relief, Jesus himself put me at ease.

Pontiff's Words at Latin Patriarchate Co-Cathedral
I Give Thanks for "the Hidden Apostolate of the Contemplatives Who Are Present Here"
JERUSALEM, MAY 12, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is the text of Benedict XVI's greeting given today to some 300 people, including contemplative religious, at the Latin patriarchate's co-cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in Jerusalem.

Your Beatitude, I thank you for your words of welcome. I also greet the Patriarch Emeritus and I assure you both of my fraternal good wishes and prayers.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am happy to be here with you today in this Co-Cathedral, where the Christian community in Jerusalem continues to gather, as it has been doing for centuries, ever since the earliest days of the Church. Here in this city, Peter first preached the Good News of Jesus Christ on the day of Pentecost, when about three thousand souls were added to the number of the disciples. Here too the first Christians "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers" (Acts 2:42). From Jerusalem, the Gospel has gone out "to all the earth ... to the ends of the world" (Ps 19:4), yet all the time, the Church's missionary effort has been sustained by the prayers of the faithful, gathered around the altar of the Lord, invoking the mighty power of the Holy Spirit upon the work of preaching.
Above all, it is the prayers of those whose vocation, in the words of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, is to be "love, deep down in the heart of the Church" (Letter to Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart) that sustains the work of evangelization. I want to express a particular word of appreciation for the hidden apostolate of the contemplatives who are present here, and to thank you for your generous dedication to lives of prayer and self-denial. I am especially grateful for the prayers you offer for my universal ministry, and I ask you to continue to commend to the Lord my work of service to God's people all over the world. In the words of the Psalmist, I ask you also to "pray for the peace of Jerusalem" (Ps 122:6), to pray without ceasing for an end to the conflict that has brought so much suffering to the peoples of this land. And now, I give you my blessing.
