DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
"I have come as
light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in
darkness"
Scripture: John 12:44-50
44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in me, believes not
in me but in him who sent me. 45 And he who sees me sees him who sent
me. 46 I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me
may not remain in darkness. 47 If any one hears my sayings and does not
keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but
to save the world. 48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings
has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last
day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent
me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. 50
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore,
I say as the Father has bidden me."
Meditation: What kind of darkness does Jesus warn us to avoid?
It is the darkness of unbelief and rejection – not only of the Son who
came into the world to save it – but rejection of the Father who offers
us healing and reconciliation through his Son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’
last public discourse before his death and resurrection (according to
John’s Gospel), Jesus speaks of himself as the light of the world.
In the scriptures light is associated with God's truth and life.
Psalm 27 exclaims, The Lord is my light and my salvation. Just as
natural light exposes the darkness and reveals what is hidden, so God's
word enables those with eyes of faith to perceive the hidden
truths of God's kingdom. Our universe could not exist without light –
and no living thing could be sustained without it. Just as natural light
produces warmth and energy – enabling seed to sprout and living things
to grow – in like manner, God's light and truth enables us to grow in
the life he offers us. Jesus' words produce life – the very life of
God – within those who receive it with faith.
To see Jesus is to see God. To hear his words is to hear the voice of
God. He is the very light of God that has power to overcome the darkness
of sin, ignorance, and unbelief. God's light and truth brings healing,
pardon, and transformation. This light is not only for the chosen people
of Israel, but for the whole world as well. Jesus warns that if we
refuse his word or take it lightly, we choose to remain in spiritual
darkness. Jesus made it clear that he did not come to condemn us, but
rather to bring abundant life and freedom from the oppression of sin,
Satan, and a world opposed to God's way of life. We condemn ourselves
when we reject God's word of truth, life, and wisdom. It is one thing to
live in ignorance due to lack of knowledge and understanding, but
another thing to disdain the very source of truth who is Christ Jesus,
the Word of God sent from the Father. Jesus says that his word – which
comes from the Father and produces eternal life in us – will be our
judge. Do you believe that God's word has power to set you free from sin
and ignorance and to transform your life in his way of holiness?
Saint Augustine of Hippo (5th century) summed up our need for God's
help in the following prayer: God our Father, we find it difficult to
come to you, because our knowledge of you is imperfect. In our ignorance
we have imagined you to be our enemy; we have wrongly thought that you
take pleasure in punishing our sins; and we have foolishly conceived you
to be a tyrant over human life. But since Jesus came among us, he has
shown that you are loving, and that our resentment against you was
groundless.
God does not leave us in spiritual darkness – in our ignorance and
unbelief. He gives light, wisdom, and grace to all who seek him and
hunger for his word. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he helps us to
grow daily in faith, knowledge, and understanding of his word. Do you
want to know more of God and his transforming love? Look to Jesus, the
Light of God, and in his truth you will find joy, freedom, and
wholeness of mind, body and soul.
"Lord Jesus, in your word I find life, truth, and freedom. May I
never doubt your word or forget your commandments. Increase my love for
your word that I may embrace it fully in my life."
Psalm 67:2-7
2 that thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving power among all
nations.
3 Let the peoples praise thee, O God; let all the peoples praise thee!
4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for thou dost judge the
peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. [Selah] 5 Let the
peoples praise thee, O God; let all the peoples praise thee!
6 The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us.
7 God has blessed us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Jordan King Breaking Precedent to Greet Pope
VATICAN CITY, MAY 5, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- The king of Jordan plans to break protocol this Friday when he receives Benedict XVI.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, gave a briefing Monday on the Pope's upcoming weeklong Holy Land pilgrimage.
The spokesman noted that King Abdallah II will welcome the Pontiff at the airport where he is scheduled to arrive at 2:30 p.m.. And in a particularly unusual gesture, he and Queen Rania will again accompany the Holy Father to the airport when he leaves on Monday.
Father Lombardi contended that this king is offering a noteworthy contribution to interreligious dialogue through various initiatives. He pointed to his Amman Message, encouraging the Islamic world to leave aside extremism, and the Amman Interfaith Message, directed primarily to Christians and Jews and inviting the promotion of peace and values shared among the religions.
The Vatican spokesman further noted that one of King Abdallah's advisors is Ghazi bin Muhammad, who coordinated the initiative from 138 Muslim scholars who responded to 2006 attacks against the Pope following his address in Regensburg.
It was this group who wrote "A Common Word," which eventually led to the formation of the Catholic-Muslim Forum in Rome.

May 6, 2009
Sts. Marian and James

(d. 259)
Often, it’s hard to find much detail from the lives of saints of the
early Church. What we know about the third-century martyrs we honor
today is likewise minimal. But we do know that they lived and died for
the faith. Almost 2,000 years later, that is enough reason to honor
them.
Born in North Africa, Marian was a lector or reader; James was a deacon.
For their devotion to the faith they suffered during the persecution of
Valerian.
Prior to their persecution Marian and James were visited by two bishops
who encouraged them in the faith not long before they themselves were
martyred. A short time later, Marian and James were arrested and
interrogated. The two readily confessed their faith and, for that, were
tortured. While in prison they are said to have experienced visions,
including one of the two bishops who had visited them earlier.
On the last day of their lives, Marian and James joined other Christians
facing martyrdom. They were blindfolded and then put to death. Their
bodies were thrown into the water. The year was 259.

CHAPTER VI.
THE TRIALS OF THE QUEEN IN THE TEMPLE AND THE DEATH OF
HER PARENTS.
To this proposal of the Most High the invincible
Princess Mary answered with a more courageous heart than all the saints
and martyrs have ever shown in the world; and She said: "Lord God and my
highest King, all my faculties and their operations, and my being
itself, which I have received of thy infinite bounty, I hold in
readiness as a sacrifice to thy divine pleasure, wishing that it be
fulfilled entirely according to the desires of thy infinite wisdom and
goodness. And if Thou give me any freedom of choice in regard to
anything, I wish only to choose suffering unto death in love for Thee;
and I beseech Thee, my only Good, that Thou make of thy slave a
sacrifice and holocaust of suffering acceptable in thy eves. I
acknowledge, Lord, powerful and most liberal God, my debt, and that no
creature owes to Thee so great a return, nor are all of them together so
much indebted to Thee as I alone, who am so entirely unequal to the task
of discharging this indebtedness to thy magnificence. But if Thou wilt
admit suffering as a sort of return, let all the sorrows and
tribulations of death come over me. I will only ask for thy divine
protection, and, prostrate before the throne of thy infinite Majesty, I
supplicate Thee not to forsake me. Remember, 0 my Lord, the faithful
promises, which Thou hast made to our Ancestors and Prophets, that Thou
wilt favor the just, stand by those who are in tribulation, console the
afflicted, be a protection and a defense to them in their tribulations.
True are thy words, infallible and certain are thy promises; the heavens
and the earth shall sooner fall to pieces than that thy words should
ever fail. The malice of the creature cannot extinguish thy charity
toward those that hope in thy mercy; fulfill in me thy holy and perfect
will."
The Most High accepted this morning offering from his
tender Spouse and holy child Mary, and with a most benign countenance He
said to Her: "Beautiful art thou in thy thoughts, Daughter of the
Prince, my Dove, my beloved and chosen One. I accept thy desires as
highly pleasing to me and I wish that as a beginning of their
fulfillment thou take notice, that according to my divine ordainment,
thy father Joachim must pass from this mortal to the eternal and
immortal life. His death will happen shortly and He will pass in peace
and shall be placed among the saints in limbo, to await the Redemption
of the human race." This announcement did not disturb the royal heart of
the Princess of heaven, the blessed Mary; but as the love of children
for their parents is a just debt of nature, and as in this most holy
Child this love had attained its highest perfection, the natural sorrow
for the loss of her father Joachim could not be wanting, for She loved
him with a holy love. The tender and sweet Child therefore felt, that
this sorrowful compassion was perfectly compatible with the serenity of
her magnanimous heart, and, working in all things with grandeur, giving
nature and grace each their due, She offered an ardent prayer for her
father saint Joachim. She besought the Lord to give him grace to depend
upon Him as his powerful and true God in his transit through a blessed
death; and asked Him to defend Joachim against the demon especially in
that hour, preserve him for and constitute him among the number of the
elect, since during his life He had confessed and magnified his
admirable and holy name. And in order to oblige his Majesty the more,
the most faithful Daughter offered to suffer all that the Lord might
ordain.
The Lord accepted this petition and consoled the
heavenly Child by assuring Her, that He would assist her father as a
most merciful and kind Rewarder of those that love and serve Him, and
that He would place him among the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
At the same time He prepared Her anew for the acceptance and endurance
of troubles. Eight days before the death of the Patriarch Joachim the
most holy Mary received another notice from the Lord, advising Her of
the day and hour in which He was to die. His death took place only six
months after Her entrance into the temple. Having received this notice
from the Lord, She requested the twelve angels, mentioned by saint John
in the Apocalypse, to assist her father Joachim and to comfort and
console Him his sickness, which they did. For the last hours of his life
She sent all the angels of her guard asking the Lord, to make them
visible to him for his greater consolation. God conceded this favor and
confirmed all the wishes of his chosen and only One; and the great
patriarch, most happy Joachim, saw the thousand angels which guarded
Mary. In response to her prayer and wishes the Almighty allowed his
graces to overflow, commanding the angels to address Joachim as follows:
"Man of God, may the Most High and powerful Lord be
thy eternal salvation and may He send thee from his holy place the
necessary and opportune help for thy soul. Mary thy Daughter has sent us
in order to assist thee in this hour, in which thou must pay the debt
of mortality to thy
Creator. She is a most faithful and powerful Intercessor before the
Almighty. in whose name and peace thou wilt now pass consoled and joyous
from this world, because He has made thee the father of such a blessed
Daughter. Although his incomprehensible Majesty, on account of his
hidden decrees, has not as yet revealed the sacraments and dignity, in
which He shall invest thy Daughter, He wishes thee to know it now
in order that thou mayest magnify
and praise Him, and in order that the pain and sorrow of natural death
may be relieved by the joy of thy spirit at this news. Mary, thy
Daughter, is chosen and ordained by the Almighty as the One, in whom the
divine Word shall vest Himself with human flesh and form. She is to be
the happy Mother of the Messias and the Blessed among women, the most
exalted among all creatures, and only inferior to God himself. Thy most
fortunate Daughter is to restore what the human race lost by the first
sin, and She is the high mountain on which is to be established and
constructed the new law of grace. Since thou leavest to the world a
Daughter, through whom God will restore it and prepare a full remedy, do
thou part from it in the joy of thy soul, and may the Lord bless thee
from Sion (Psalm 127, 5) and constitute thee in the inheritance of the
saints and bring thee to the vision and enjoyment of the blessed
Jerusalem."

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
NOTEBOOK II
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook II
Thursday. During the
evening adoration, I saw Jesus scourged and tortured. He said to me,
My daughter, I desire that even in the smallest
things, you rely on your confessor. Your greatest sacrifices do not please
Me of you practice them without the confessor’s permission; on the other
hand, the smallest sacrifice finds great value in My eyes, if it is done
with his permission. The greatest works are worthless in My eyes if they are
done out of self will and often they are not in accord with My will and
merit punishment rather than reward. And on the other hand, even the
smallest of your acts, done with the confessor’s permission is pleasing in
My eyes and very dear to Me, hold firmly to this always. Be constantly on
the watch, for many souls will turn back from the gates of hell and worship
My mercy. But fear nothing, as I am with you. Know that of yourself you can
do nothing.
On the first Friday of the month, before
Communion, I saw a large ciborium filled with sacred hosts. A hand placed
the ciborium in front of me, and I took it in my hands. There were a
thousand living hosts inside. Then I heard a voice,
These are hosts which have been received by the
souls for whom you have obtained the grace of true conversion during this
Lent. That was a week before Good Friday. I
spent the day in great interior recollection, emptying myself for the sake
of souls.
Oh, what joy it is to empty myself for the sake of immortal souls! I know
that the grain of wheat must be destroyed and ground between millstones in
order to become food. In the same way, I must become destroyed in order to
be useful to the Church and souls, even though exteriorly no one will notice
my sacrifice. O Jesus, outwardly I want to be hidden, just like this little
wafer wherein the eye perceives nothing, and yet I am a host consecrated to
you.
Palm Sunday. This Sunday, I experienced in a special way the sentiments of
the most sweet Heart of Jesus. My spirit was there where Jesus was. I saw
Jesus riding on a donkey’s foal, and the disciples and a great multitude
with branches in their hands joyfully accompanying the Lord Jesus. Some
strewed them before His feet where He was riding, while others raised their
branches in the air, leaping and jumping before the Lord and not knowing
what to do for joy. And I saw another crowd which came out to meet Jesus,
likewise with joyful faces and with branches in their hands, and they were
crying out unceasingly with joy. There were little children there also. But
Jesus was very grave, and the Lord gave me to know how much He was suffering
at the time. And at that moment, I saw nothing but only Jesus, whose Heart
was saturated with ingratitude.
Quarterly confession. Father Bukowski. When some inner force urged me again
not to put off this matter, I was unable to find pace. I told the confessor,
Father Bukowski, that I could not wait any longer. Father answered me:
“sister, this is an illusion. The Lord Jesus cannot be demanding this. You
have made your perpetual vows. All this is an illusion. You are inventing
some sort of heresy!” and he was shouting at me, almost at the top of his
voice. I asked him whether all of this was an illusion, and He said,
“Everything.” “Then please tell me what course I must take.” “Well, sister,
you must not follow any inspiration. You should get your mind off all this.
You should pay no attention to what you hear in your soul and try to carry
out your exterior duties well. Give no thought to these things and put them
completely out of your mind.” I answered, “good” up to now, I have been
following my conscience, but now that you direct me, Father, to pay no heed
to my interior, I will cease to do so.” Then he said, “if the Lord Jesus
tells you something again, please let me know, but you must take no action.”
I answered, “very well; I will try to be obedient.” I do not know why Father
was being so severe.
When I left the confessional, a multitude of thoughts oppressed my soul. Why
be sincere? What I have told is no sin, so I have no duty to tell it to the
confessor. And again, what a relief that I do not have to heed my interior
any more as long as things are all right on the outside. I do not have to
pay attention to anything or to follow the inner voices that have often cost
me so much humiliation. From now on, I will be free. And again, a strange
pain seized my soul: can I not, then, commune with the One whom I desire so
greatly? The one who is the whole strength of my soul? I began to cry out,
“to whom shall I go, O Jesus?” but from the moment of the confessor’s
prohibition, great darkness fell upon my soul. I feared lest I hear some
inner voice, which would occasion the breaking of my confessor’s
prohibition. And then again, I die of longing for God. My interior is torn
asunder, not having any will of its own, since it has been turned over
completely to God.
That was on Wednesday of Holy week. The suffering intensified on Holy
Thursday. When I came to make my meditation, I entered into a kind of agony.
I did not feel the presence of God, but all the justice of God weighed
heavily upon me. I saw myself as if knocked down for the sins of the world.
Satan began to mock me, “See, now you will no longer strive to win souls;
look how you’ve been paid! Nobody will believe you that Jesus demands this.
See how much more you are going to suffer! After all, the confessor has now
released you from all these things.” Now I can live as I like, as long as
things are all right outwardly. These dreadful thoughts tormented me
throughout the whole hour.
When it was almost time for Holy Mass, my heart was seized with pain; am I,
then, to leave the Congregation? And since father has told me that this is a
kind of heresy, am I to fall away from the Church? I cried out to the Lord
with a sorrowful interior cry, “Jesus, save me!” still not a single ray of
light entered my soul, and I felt my strength failing, as if the body were
separation itself from the soul. I submitted to the will of God and
repeated, “O God, let whatever You have decided upon happen to me. Nothing
in me is any longer my own.” Then, suddenly, God’s presence enveloped me and
penetrated me through and through. This was just as I was receiving Holy
Communion. A moment after Holy Communion, I lost all awareness of everything
around me and of my whereabouts.
Then I saw the Lord Jesus, as He is represented in the image, and He said to
me, tell the confessor that this work is mine and
that I am using you as a lowly instrument. And
I said, “Jesus, I can no longer do anything you command me to do, because my
confessor has told me that all this is an illusion, and that I am not
allowed to obey any of Your commands. I will do nothing that You will tell
me to do now. I am sorry, my Lord, but I am not allowed to do anything, and
I must obey my confessor. Jesus, I most earnestly ask Your Pardon. You know
how much I suffer because of this, but it can’t be helped, Jesus. The
confessor has forbidden me to follow Your orders.” Jesus listened to my
arguments and complaints with kindness and satisfaction. I thought the Lord
Jesus would be grievously offended but, on the contrary, He was pleased and
said to me kindly, always tell your confessor
about everything I say to you and command you to do, and do only that for
which you obtain permission. Do not be upset, and fear nothing; I am with
you. My soul was filled with joy, and all those
oppressive thoughts vanished. Certitude and courage entered my soul.

CATHOLIC TEACHING/CONVICTION/TESTIMONY |
Holy See on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
"These Measures Are Necessary to Promote Trust, Transparency, Confidence and Cooperation"
NEW YORK, MAY 5, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is the address Archbishop Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, delivered today to a committee on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons treaty.
* * *
Mr. Chairman,
At the outset allow me to congratulate you on your election to the Chairmanship of the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.
After four decades of its existence and its good service to the international community, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons remains a cornerstone of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regimes as well as a key instrument seeking to strengthen international peace and security. The Holy See reaffirms its strong and continuing support for the NPT and calls for universal and full adherence to and compliance with the Treaty.
Last year marked the Treaty's fortieth anniversary. Unfortunately, we note today that more than 26,000 nuclear warheads remain in the world and some nations are still racing to join the "nuclear club," despite the Treaty's legally binding obligations in the areas of disarmament and non- proliferation. In light of this the validity and relevance of the Treaty remain an urgent call for all States to join their efforts in achieving a nuclear-weapons-free world.
After many years of stalemate and even regress, we can observe with satisfaction some good signs in the field of putting again nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation at the center of the international debate on peace and security. The many initiatives taken by Governments, international organizations and civil society are one step in the right direction. My Delegation commends national policies and bilateral agreements to reduce nuclear arsenals and looks forward to seeing progress in addressing issues related to nuclear arms and the delivery of these weapons. The different initiatives taken and the positions expressed in the last months are encouraging steps which inspire renewed hope that the goal of a nuclear-weapons-free world is achievable. However, as long as nuclear weapons exist they will always pose a danger to humanity of being used or falling into the hands of terrorists, threatening peace and security and even human existence itself.
The Holy See stresses the need for concrete, transparent and convincing steps in the fields of disarmament and non-proliferation under the guidance of the NPT principles. To build on the new momentum, the Holy See delegation is of the opinion that five objectives could be reached in a short period of time:
-- The entry into force of the CTBT is essential and achievable if States are serious about their commitment to a nuclear-weapons-free world.
-- The immediate commencement of negotiations of a Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty is overdue.
-- Nuclear weapon States have to interpret their military doctrines as precluding any reliance on nuclear weapons.
-- The peaceful use of nuclear energy should be under strict control of the International Atomic Energy Agency. All countries should join all relevant instruments in this area. The non-proliferation side of the NPT must be strengthened through increasing the capacity of the IAEA, and through further enhancement of the Agency's safeguards system.
-- With the growing need for energy, it is imperative to find common solutions and international structures for the production of nuclear fuel. In this area, the IAEA should have a leading role to ensure safety, security and fair access for all.
All these measures are necessary to promote trust, transparency, confidence, and cooperation among nations and regions. The nuclear-weapons-free zones remain the best example of such trust and confidence, and affirm that peace and security is possible without possessing nuclear weapons. The Holy See thus calls upon all the nuclear weapon States to take a courageous leadership role and political responsibility in safeguarding the very integrity of the NPT and in creating a climate of trust, transparency and true cooperation, with a view to the concrete realization of a culture of life and peace. In an effort to put priorities and hierarchies of values in their proper place, greater common effort must be made to mobilize resources toward ethical, cultural and economic development so that humanity can turn its back on the arms race.
Nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and peaceful use are the three mutually reinforcing pillars. Urgent and irreversible progress is required on all fronts. Today's growing expansion of civil nuclear energy programmes poses new potential challenges to the non-proliferation regime. But without serious and concrete steps towards disarmament, the non-proliferation pillar will be further weakened.
Mr. Chairman, as we prepare for the 2010 NPT Review Conference, the Holy See makes an appeal that the difficult and complex issues of the Review Conference be addressed in an even-handed way. At the same time, my Delegation assures you of its full support in your endeavours towards a successful outcome of this session.
Thank you, Mr Chairman.
