DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Wednesday (6/10): "He who does the
commandments and teaches them shall be called great”
Scripture: Matthew 5:17-19
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I
have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to
you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass
from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then relaxes one of
the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called
least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them
shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Meditation: Why do people tend to view the “law of God”
negatively rather than positively? Jesus’ attitude towards the law of
God can be summed up in the great prayer of Psalm 119: “Oh, how I love
your law! It is my meditation all the day.” For the people of Israel
the “law” could refer to the ten commandments or to the five Books of
Moses, called the Pentateuch, which explain the commandments and
ordinances of God for his people. The “law” also referred to the whole
teaching or way of life which God gave to his people. The Jews in Jesus’
time also used it as a description of the oral or scribal law. Needless
to say, the scribes added many more things to the law than God intended.
That is why Jesus often condemned the scribal law. It placed burdens on
people which God had not intended. Jesus, however, made it very clear
that the essence of God’s law – his commandments and way of life, must
be fulfilled. The law of God is truth and when we live according to that
truth it produces the fruits of righteousness, holiness, peace, and joy.
Jesus taught reverence for God’s law – reverence for God himself, for
the Lord’s Day, reverence or respect for parents, respect for life, for
property, for another person’s good name, respect for oneself and for
one’s neighbor lest wrong or hurtful desires master us. Reverence and
respect for God’s commandments teach us the way of love – love of God
and love of neighbor. What is impossible to men is possible to God and
those who have faith in God. God gives us the grace to love as he loves,
to forgive as he forgives, to think as he thinks, and to act as he acts.
The Lord loves righteousness and hates wickedness. As his followers we
must love his commandments and hate every form of sin. Do you love the
commands of the Lord?
“Lord Jesus, grant this day, to direct and sanctify, to rule and
govern our hearts and bodies, so that all our thoughts, words and deeds
may be according to your Father’s law and thus may we be saved and
protected through your mighty help.”
Psalm 16:1-2,4-5,8,11
1 Preserve me, O God, for in thee I take refuge.
2 I say to the LORD, "Thou art my Lord; I have no good apart from thee."
4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their libations
of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; thou holdest my lot.
8 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I
shall not be moved.
11 Thou dost show me the path of life; in thy presence there is fulness
of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.

When Stem Cell Research Gets
Personal (Part 2)
Interview With Bioethicist on Umbilical
Cord Cell Banking
By Kathleen Naab
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, JUNE 9, 2009 ( Zenit.org).-
The debate about stem cell research is under
way in legislatures around the world, but
there is an element to the research that is
debated within the home.
This intimate level of the discussion
happens every time a pregnant couple faces
the possibility of storing their newborn's
umbilical cord blood (or rather, the stem
cells it contains) in hopes of future
treatment or cures, should they be
necessary.
ZENIT spoke with Father Alfred Cioffi about
stem cell research and the particular
promise offered by these powerful cells
found in umbilical cord blood.
Father Cioffi, a priest of the Archdiocese
of Miami, is a research ethicist for the
National Catholic Bioethics Center. He
has done extensive study and work in
bioethics and research, focusing his first
doctoral thesis from Rome's Pontifical
Gregorian University on "The Fetus as
Medical Patient: Moral Dilemmas in Prenatal
Diagnosis." He earned a second doctorate in
genetics from Purdue University, with a
thesis on "The VWG Hypothesis: Predicting
Distinct Chromatin Structures from the DNA
Sequence."
Part 1 of this interview, detailing the
basics of stem cell research, was published
Monday.
ZENIT: Going to a more particular question,
what is the difference between adult stem
cells and stem cells taken from umbilical
cord blood?
Father Cioffi: Regarding umbilical cord stem
cells, bioethically, they represent a
special category. It turns out that the
blood inside the umbilical cord also
contains stem cells. Since the umbilical
cord comes from the human embryo (or fetus),
then these are embryonic stem cells. The
umbilical cord is normally discarded once
the baby is born, but these embryonic stem
cells can be extracted from that cord blood
without having to do the least damage to the
baby. In a sense, this is the best of both
worlds because, on the one hand, umbilical
cord stem cells have the plasticity and
high-quality healing capacity of embryonic
stem cells and, on the other, the baby
certainly doesn’t have to be killed in order
to obtain them.
ZENIT: So then let's turn to another side of
this issue: parents considering storing
their newborn's stem cells. Some -- perhaps
most -- pregnancy books, obstetricians and
pediatricians are cautious about
recommending umbilical cord banking and even
somewhat discouraging. Would you say this is
a justified attitude? Does it reflect a lack
of information? Or perhaps the effects of an
anti-life ideology?
Father Cioffi: The downside of umbilical
cord stem cells is mostly financial. It is
relatively expensive to extract them -- I've
heard for the United States, perhaps about
$1,000 -- and then there's a monthly fee --
of about $100 -- to store them. How long
would they be stored? Essentially, for life,
or until the newborn has an injury or
disease sometime in his lifetime. And,
hopefully, that injury or disease could be
healed with the saved umbilical cord stem
cells.
ZENIT: So what would you recommend for
pregnant couples? Is umbilical cord banking
worth the price tag?
Father Cioffi: You have to consider several
factors: How much is it likely to cost; up
front and in the long run? What cures could
be expected realistically, and in what time
frame? Since cord blood stem cell research
is an industry that is just now beginning,
perhaps for now the couples who would
benefit the most from storing cord blood
stem cells are the ones who have another
child who was either born with some illness
or acquired some illness or injury that
could be cured with the stem cells of the
sibling, since coming from the same parents
the tissue match would likely be a good one.
In the long run, umbilical cord stem cells
offer tremendous potential, so my
bottom-line recommendation for couples
considering their storage when giving birth
is this: If the couple can afford it
(perhaps even with some help from family and
friends -- “baby-shower donations
accepted!”), then they should do it. Why?
Because, in addition to obvious advantages
to their baby, siblings and close relatives,
this would also further this fledging
industry that is indeed very pro-life, and
needs all the help it can get in getting
started.
If the couple cannot afford it, they could
consider putting some “friendly pressure” on
their health insurance company to cover, at
least, some of the cost. I think that it is
important to get health insurance companies
to understand that their investment in
umbilical cord blood stem cell storage is to
their financial advantage in the long run.
Why? Because, as more and more cures come
about in this field, on average, more and
more of their clients would benefit from
them -- say, for instance, an injured
teenager whose cord cells were saved, and
who will now heal better and faster because
of them, thus reducing his hospital stay and
treatment sessions, thus reducing health
care insurance costs.
New York
Bishops on Same-Sex "Marriage"
"We Stand Unified in Our
Strong Opposition"
NEW YORK, JUNE 9, 2009 ( Zenit.org).-
Here is the statement the
bishops of New York released
June 1 on the proposed law
that would legalize same-sex
"marriage" in the state of
New York.
* * *
We face today the prospect
of a law in New York which
would radically change the
timeless institution of
marriage. As pastors of
citizens from every corner
of our great state, we stand
unified in our strong
opposition to such a drastic
measure.
Throughout history,
different cultures have had
different customs regarding
marriage. But the one
constant has been the
conviction that marriage is
the union of a man and a
woman in an enduring bond,
ordered for the procreation
and stable rearing of
children. Regrettably, the
state Assembly has voted to
redefine what nature and our
common heritage long ago
defined for us. We fervently
pray that members of the
state Senate will stand firm
in opposition to this
ill-advised legislation, and
we call on Catholics and all
New Yorkers to contact their
Senators to make their
voices heard.
Our opposition to this bill
is based not only on
Catholic teaching regarding
human sexuality and the
Sacrament of Marriage. Just
as importantly, it is based
on reason, sound public
policy, and plain common
sense, as we stated in our
2008 pastoral statement on
same-sex “marriage.” To
briefly reiterate, the state
has a compelling legal
interest in promoting
marriage between men and
women in order to create
stable families and provide
for the safety, health and
well being of children. The
state has no such compelling
legal interest in
recognizing a relationship
between two people of the
same sex.
If there are injustices
against those in
relationships other than
marriage, those injustices
can certainly be reformed
and corrected in a way other
than by drastically
redefining marriage.
We close with a final point
from our 2008 statement:
"(W)e want to make
absolutely clear that our
firm beliefs about marriage
... must not be misconstrued
to be in any way a
condemnation of homosexual
people or an attack on their
human dignity. Our Church
teaches, and we affirm, that
we must treat our homosexual
sisters and brothers with
dignity and love, as we
would all God’s children.
Indeed the Catechism of the
Catholic Church warns that
any form of prejudice or
hatred – 'every sign of
unjust discrimination' --
against homosexual people
should be avoided" (CCC
2358).

Blessed
Joachima
(1783-1854)
Born
into an aristocratic family in Barcelona, Spain, Joachima was 12 when
she expressed a desire to become a Carmelite nun. But her life took an
altogether different turn at 16 with her marriage to a young lawyer,
Theodore de Mas. Both deeply devout, they became secular Franciscans.
During their 17 years of married life they raised eight children.
The normalcy of their family life was interrupted when Napoleon invaded
Spain. Joachima had to flee with the children; Theodore, remaining
behind, died. Though Joachima reexperienced a desire to enter a
religious community, she attended to her duties as a mother. At the same
time, the young widow led a life of austerity and chose to wear the
habit of the Third Order of St. Francis as her ordinary dress. She spent
much time in prayer and visiting the sick.
Four years later, with some of her children now married and younger ones
under their care, Joachima confessed her desire to a priest to join a
religious order. With his encouragement she established the Carmelite
Sisters of Charity. In the midst of the fratricidal wars occurring at
the time, Joachima was briefly imprisoned and, later, exiled to France
for several years.
Sickness ultimately compelled her to resign as superior of her order.
Over the next four years she slowly succumbed to paralysis, which caused
her to die by inches. At her death in 1854 at the age of 71, Joachima
was known and admired for her high degree of prayer, deep trust in God
and selfless charity.
Comment:
Joachima understands loss. She lost the home where her children grew up,
her husband and, finally, her health. As the power to move and care for
her own needs slowly ebbed away, this woman who had all her life cared
for others became wholly dependent; she required help with life’s
simplest tasks. When our own lives go spinning out of control, when
illness and bereavement and financial hardship strike, all we can do is
cling to the belief that sustained Joachima: God watches over us always.

CHAPTER III.
MOST HOLY MARY VISITS ELISABETH.
WORDS OF THE QUEEN.
For two reasons, my daughter, the divine effects
wrought through me by my Son in saint John and Elisabeth were concealed,
while those in Zacharias were manifest. First, because Elisabeth spoke
out clearly in praise of the incarnate Word and of me; yet at the time
it was not proper that either this mystery or my dignity should be
openly known; the coming of the Messias was to be manifested by other
more appropriate means. Secondly, not all hearts were so well prepared
as that of Elisabeth for receiving such precious and unprecedented seed
of divine knowledge, nor would they have welcomed such sacramental
revelation with due reverence. On the other hand it was more becoming
that Zacharias in his priestly dignity should proclaim what was then to
be made known; for the beginnings of the heavenly light would be
accepted more readily from him than from saint Elisabeth, especially
while he was present. That which she said, was reserved to bring forth
its effects in due time. Although the words of God have their own
inherent force; yet the more sweet and acceptable manner of
communicating with the ignorant and the unskilled in divine mysteries is
by means of the priest.
Likewise it was proper that the dignity and honor of
the priesthood should receive its due; for the Most High holds the
priests in such esteem, that if He finds them in the right disposition,
He exalts them and fills them with his Spirit in order that the world
may venerate them as his chosen and anointed ones. Moreover the wonders
of the Lord run less risk in priests. even when they are more openly
revealed to them, If they live up to their dignity, their works in
comparison with those of the other creatures, are like those of the
angels and of the seraphim. Their countenance should be resplendent,
like that of Moses, when he came forth from converse with the Lord (Exod.
34, 29). At least they should deal with the rest of men in
such a manner that they be honored and revered as next to God. I desire
that thou understand, my dearest, that the Most High is greatly incensed
against the world in this matter: as well against the priests as against
laymen. Against the priests because, forgetting their exalted dignity,
they debase themselves by a contemptible, degraded and scandalous life,
giving bad example to the world by mixing up with it to the neglect of
their sanctification. And against the laymen, because they act with a
foolhardy presumption toward the anointed of the Lord, whom, though
imperfect and blameless in their lives, they ought to honor and revere
as taking the place of Christ, my most holy Son, on earth.
On account of this reverence due to the priesthood my
behavior toward saint Zacharias was different from that toward
Elisabeth. For, although the Lord wished, that I should be the
instrument, by which the gifts of the holy Spirit should be communicated
to both; yet I saluted Elisabeth in such a manner, that I at the same
time showed a certain authority, exerting my power over the original sin
of her son; for at my words this sin was forgiven him, and both mother
and son were filled with the Holy Ghost. As I had not contracted
original sin and was exempt from it, I possessed dominion over it on
this occasion: I commanded as the Mistress, who had triumphed over it by
the help of the Lord (Gen. 3, 5), and who was no slave of it, as all the
sons of Adam, who sinned in him (Rom. 5, 12). Therefore the Lord desires
that, in order to free John from the slavery and chains of sin, I should
command over it as one who never was subject to its bondage. I did not
salute Zacharias in this authoritative way, but I prayed for him,
observing the reverence and decorum due to his dignity and my modesty. I
would not have commanded the tongue of the priest to be loosened, not
even mentally and secretly, if the Most High had not enjoined it upon
me, intimating at the same time, that the defect of speech hardly suited
his office, for a priest should stand ready to serve and praise the
Almighty with all his powers. In regard to the respect due to priests I
will tell thee more on another occasion; let this suffice at present for
the solution of thy doubt.
But from my instruction today learn especially to
seek direction in the way of virtue and of eternal life in all thy
intercourse with men, be they above or below thee in dignity. Imitate
therein me and my cousin Elisabeth, with due discretion asking all to
direct thee and guide thee; for in return for such humility the Lord
will provide thee with secure counsel and divine light for exercising
thy discreet and sincere love of virtue. Drive away, or do not allow
thyself to be influenced by even the least breath of flattery and avoid
the conversations which expose thee to it; for such deceitful pleasure
darkens the light and perverts the unsuspecting mind. The Lord is so
jealous of the souls especially beloved by Him, that He will immediately
turn away from them if they find pleasure in the praises of men and seek
to recompense themselves by their flatteries; since by this levity they
become unworthy of his favors. It is not possible to unite in a soul the
adulations of the world and the caresses of the Most High. For these
latter are sincere, holy, pure, and lasting: they humiliate, cleanse,
pacify and illumine the heart; while on the other hand the flatteries of
creatures are vain, fleeting, deceitful, impure and false, issuing from
the mouths of those who are all liars (Ps. 115, 11); and whatever is
deceitful is a work of the enemy.

DIVINE MERCY
|

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook III
Today, my soul
suffered such agony that I began to complain to the Lord Jesus, "Jesus, how
can You leave me alone? I cannot take even one step forward by myself. You
have taken my confessor away, and You yourself are hiding from me. Surely,
You know, Jesus, that of myself I know nothing but how to waste Your graces.
Jesus, You must arrange things so that Father Andrasz will return". But the
anguish persisted.
It occurred to me to go to some priest and tell him of my anguish as well as
some various inspirations, that he might resolve them for me: and I shared
this idea with Mother Superior (Irene). Mother replied, "I under Sister that
you are going through a difficult time, but at present, I really do not know
any priest that would be suitable for you. At any rate Father Andrasz will
be returning soon. So, for now, go and tell everything to the Lord Jesus."
When I went to talk with the Lord for a while, I heard a voice in my soul:
"My - I will not give you the grace to reveal
yourself to someone else, and even you did bare yourself, I will not give
that priest the grace needed to understand you. At this time, it is My
desire that you put up with yourself patiently. My daughter, it is not My
will that You should tell everybody about the gifts I have granted you. I
have entrusted you to the care of the friend of My Heart, and under his
direction your soul will bloom. I have given him light to recognize My life
in your soul"
"My daughter, when I was before Herod, I obtained a grace for you; namely,
that you would be able to rise above human scorn and follow faithfully in My
footsteps. Be silent when they do not want to acknowledge your truth,
because it is then that you speak more eloquently.
"Know My daughter: if you strive for perfection you will sanctify many
souls; and if you do not strive for sanctity, by the same token, many souls
will remain imperfect, and the greater part of the responsibility for these
souls will fall on you."
Then He said, "Do
not fear, My child; but remain faithful only to My grace....."
Satan has admitted to me that I am the object
of his hatred. He said that "a thousand do me less harm than you do when you
speak of the great mercy of the Almighty One. The greatest sinners regains
confidence and return to God, and I lose everything. But what is more, you
persecute me personally with that unfathomable mercy of the Almighty One". I
took note of the great hatred Satan has for the Mercy of God. He does not
want to acknowledge that God is good.

Testimony of Carol Everett, former Abortion Provider
(This testimony was originally given
at a "Meet the Abortion Providers" workshop sponsored by the Pro-life
Action League of Chicago, directed by Joe Scheidler. Priests for Life
offers their video, "Inside the Abortion Industry," containing excerpts
of the testimonies of many former providers.
Contact us for more details
(continued)
I've got to tell you this, and there is
no good way to tell it. I have tried a million times. From the abortion
clinics, I had a meat market. Now my problem is that I don't very often
call it a meat market. You see, I call it a butcher shop. So when I say
butcher shop, people think I'm talking about the abortion clinic. But I
was involved in the butcher business for several years, I guess. (That
wasn't very funny.) Anyway, I did go into this butcher shop and I did
stay out there and the Lord worked with me for a very long time. And
through the man who washed my windows in the butcher shop, the
Right-to-Life came into my life. Through a long period of association
with this man who was a seminary student washing my windows, I finally
decided that yes, the Lord did want me to speak out, and that I would
become involved in this Movement. Now what I do is just go around and
tell people the truth about what really happens inside one of the
abortion mills.
There are all sorts of experiences with
the abortion. I want to walk you through my experiences in an abortion
clinic.
Let's just step back. How many of you
have children 14 and under? How many of you have seen a number,
unsolicited, that you think you could call that said, "Problem
Pregnancy," "Abortion Information," or "Pregnant?" in your area where
you think you could call for abortion information? Let's talk about
those kids when they find out that they are pregnant. They may not want
an abortion; they may want information. But when they call that number
that's paid for by abortion money, what kind of information do you think
they're going to get? Let's remember, they sell abortions. They don't
sell keeping the baby. They don't sell giving the baby up for adoption.
They don't sell delivering that baby in any form. They only sell
abortions.
In the State of Texas, a girl can come in
to have an abortion, and the abortion clinics are not required to have
parental consent. Most of the abortion clinics in Texas do require it
for 14 and under. However, let's paint this picture: The girl comes in,
has an abortion, she can sign for it. But when the doctor rips her
uterus out and they take her to the hospital, they won't admit her until
her parents get there and are told she had this abortion without their
consent. And they will not repair the damage or try to save her life
until the parents sign on the dotted line. And that happens. It's
terrible.
So the girl calls this number and says,
I'm pregnant. How far along are you? What's the first day of your last
normal period? They've got their wheel there and they figure it out.
This counselor is paid to be this girl's friend. She is paid to be the
authority for this girl. She is supposed to seduce her into a friendship
of sorts to sell her the abortion. Every problem this girl has: I don't
want to tell my parents. You don't have to tell your parents. They don't
have to know. You're old enough to come in and have it without them
knowing. And then the money, and they ask them to go get their money and
pay the people back in a year. Then the two questions they ask are: Does
it hurt? Oh, no. Your uterus is a muscle, and they hold their hand up if
they're seeing them; if not, they tell them over the phone: It's a cramp
to open it; a cramp to close it; it's a slight cramping sensation.
Everybody's had cramps; every woman in the world. So they think that's
no problem. I can stand that; I've been through it before. And then they
say: Is it a baby? No, it's a product of conception; it's a blood clot;
it's a piece of tissue. They don't even really tell them it's a fetus,
because, you see, that almost humanizes it too much. It's never a baby.
They can't admit it themselves when they go in the back and have little
6-week fetuses, babies that they put down disposals, and that's how we
did it in our clinic. The clinics in Dallas use disposals so none of
those crazy Pro-Lifers will come and get them out of the trash anymore
and bury them the way they did. So, they lie to her. You know, if you
look at abortion from the face, I cannot tell you one thing that happens
in an abortion clinic that is not a lie. They tell the counselors, and I
told the counselors, not to rock the boat; not to answer any questions
that they didn't ask. Get them in here; the faster you can get them in
here, the easier it is on them. You concentrate on the woman; you tell
them to help her, and you don't deal with the baby at all.
So they get this girl to come in the
clinic, and many times they just get her to come in for a pregnancy
test, and if that's the case then they greet her at the door and they
say, Oh, Linda, I'm so glad you're here. I've been waiting for you. This
girl doesn't know they have an appointment book and each counselor has
to schedule their appointments an hour apart so she has plenty of time
to spend being their "friend" while they're there. She takes them back;
she does the pregnancy test; it doesn't really matter. If there's any
way they can convince this girl she's pregnant, she's going to be
pregnant. But they go through this test anyway. She tells her she's
pregnant, and the girl might cry. She may get upset. But they take her
into a separate room; they don't want anyone to see anyone crying in
there; it's supposed to be a great place; we're supposed to help people
in the abortion clinic.
If she has the abortion that day, she
goes through one procedure, but if she comes back another day, she just
comes in the front door, fills out some forms (very minimal
information). Most of the information on that form is name, address,
telephone number, and your financial status. So they can find out to
what group they need to appeal with their $250,000 per clinic Yellow
Page budget.
Then the girl goes back, has some lab
work, and then she pays, up-front, for what they have decided the term
of pregnancy she is. Cash, Master Card, or Visa--get a Master Card, Visa
or American Express. You might consider sending them back because they
do charge for abortions, and tell them why you're sending them back.
They will accept those charges. Then the girl goes into this room for
counseling and they give her a 6 to 12-page form. This form is written
by an abortion attorney. Ours was written by one out of New York, and it
was written to confuse the girl to death. It had every possible
complication of an abortion you could imagine, and it would take [a
doctor] two hours with a medical dictionary to go through it. Words two
inches long that no one could possibly understand, and it does its job.
It confuses her and she doesn't ask any questions. She goes back to the
two questions: Does it hurt? Is it a baby? And when you have convinced
her again and lied to her again that no, it's not going to hurt, and if
she doesn't have her money--in the State of Texas you have to pay extra
to be put to sleep--it's an extra $100 to $250, depending on how far you
are into the pregnancy.
Then she goes into this holding room,
waiting for the abortion. And it depends on the day of the week, of
course, as to how many people are in there. Saturday is the big day, but
it could be a day in the week when there are only five or six people in
there waiting. And soon, if there are 30 or 40, especially, they kind of
number each other so they know what order they are going to be going out
in. They kind of laugh and joke. And if there is one crying in there,
you get that one out. You don't want that one affecting the rest of
them.
She is taken back to the procedure room,
put on the table, and draped. Her chart is put in the door. Each chart
in our clinics was handled with a little coupon on the front. The coupon
was for the doctor, because when he walks up to that door for the first
time--if you have two or three doctors working, you don't know which one
is going to do the abortion--so, they don't collect the doctor's money
with the clinic money, they collect it separately and do not show it on
any of the records in those clinics. In the four clinics I've been in
and worked in, they never showed that they collected the doctor's money
at any place. That way, they are independent contractors; you don't have
to be concerned with their malpractice insurance, and you don't have to
report it to IRS. He collects the coupon, puts it in his scrub suit
pocket. At the end of the day he goes up and presents his coupons. This
is how many I've done. And each doctor presents them separately. The
girl counts the coupons, figures out how much she owes him, and pays him
in cash.
