DAILY LITURGICAL MEDITATION |
|
Wednesday (7/1): "All came out to meet Jesus"
Scripture: Matthew 8:28-34
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the
Gadarenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce
that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, "What
have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us
before the time?" 30 Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some
distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out,
send us away into the herd of swine." 32 And he said to them, "Go." So
they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed
down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. 33 The
herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what
had happened to the demoniacs. 34 And behold, all the city came out to
meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their
neighborhood.
Meditation: Do you ever feel driven by forces beyond your
strength? Two men driven mad by the force of many evil spirits found
refuge in the one person who could set them free. Mark’s and Luke’s
gospel accounts describe this force as a legion (Mark 5:9 and Luke
8:30). A legion is no small force – but an army 6,000 strong! For the
people of Palestine, hemmed in by occupied forces, a legion, whether
spiritual or human, struck terror! Legions at their wildest committed
unmentionable atrocities. Our age has also witnessed untold crimes and
mass destruction at the hands of possessed rulers and their armies. What
is more remarkable – the destructive force of these driven and possessed
men, or the bended knee at Jesus' feet imploring mercy and release?
God's word reminds us that no destructive force can keep anyone from
the peace and safety which God offers to those who seek his help. A
thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand; but it
will not come near you. ..Because you have made the Lord your refuge,
the Most High your habitation (Psalm 91:7,9).
Jesus took pity on these men who were overtaken by a legion of evil
spirits. The destructive force of these demons is evident for all who
can see as they flee and destroy a herd of swine. After Jesus freed the
demoniacs the whole city came out to meet him. No one had demonstrated
such power and authority against the forces of Satan as Jesus did. They
feared Jesus as a result and begged him to leave them. Why would they
not want Jesus to stay? Perhaps the price for such liberation from the
power of evil and sin was more than they wanted to pay. Jesus is ready
and willing to free us from anything that binds us and that keeps us
from the love of God. Are you willing to part with anything that might
keep you from his love and saving grace?
"Lord Jesus, unbind me that I may love you wholly and walk in the
freedom of your way of love and holiness. May there be nothing which
keeps me from the joy of living in your presence."
Psalm 50:7-13,16-17
7 "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I will testify
against you. I am God, your God.
8 I do not reprove you for your sacrifices; your burnt offerings are
continually before me.
9 I will accept no bull from your house, nor he-goat from your folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand
hills.
11 I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is
mine.
12 "If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world and all that
is in it is mine.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
16 But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite my
statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?
17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.

On the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul
"Resist Being Conformed to the Mentality of This World"
VATICAN CITY, JUNE 30, 2009 ( Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the address Benedict XVI gave Monday before praying the midday Angelus with crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square.
* * *
Dear brothers and sisters:
Today we solemnly celebrate the holy apostles, Peter and Paul, special patrons of the Church of Rome: Peter, the fisherman from Galilee, "the first to confess the faith … [who] gathered the earliest Church from among the flock of Israel"; Paul, the former persecutor of Christians who "proclaimed [the faith's] deepest mysteries […] the teacher and doctor who announced salvation to all people" (cf. Preface of the Mass for today).
In one of his homilies to the community of Rome, Pope St. Leo the Great affirmed, "These are your fathers and true pastors, who have established you so that you would thus be inserted into the heavenly kingdom" (Sermo I in Nat. App Petri et Pauli, c I, PL 54,422). On the occasion of this feast, I would like to direct a particularly warm greeting, joined to my fervent wishes of congratulations, to the diocesan community of Rome, which Divine Providence has entrusted to my care as the Successor of the Apostle Peter. It is a greeting that I happily extend to all the inhabitants of our city and the pilgrims and tourists who are visiting us during this time, which also coincides with the closing of the Pauline year.
Dear brothers and sisters, may the Lord bless you and protect you through the intercession of Sts. Peter and Paul! As your pastor, I exhort you to remain faithful to your Christian vocation, to resist being conformed to the mentality of this world -- as the Apostle to the Gentiles wrote precisely to the Christians of Rome -- and always to allow yourselves to be transformed and renewed by the Gospel, to follow what is truly good and pleasing to God (cf. Romans 12:2).
I pray constantly for this, so that Rome will keep alive its Christian vocation, not only conserving unaltered its immense spiritual and cultural patrimony, but also so that its residents can turn the beauty of the faith they have received into concrete ways of thinking and acting, and thereby offer to those who arrive to this city for various reasons, an atmosphere full of humanity and Gospel values. Therefore -- in the words of St. Peter -- I invite you, dear brothers and sisters, disciples of Christ, to be "living stones," packed together around him who is the "living stone, rejected by men, but chosen and precious in the sight of God" (cf. 1 Peter 2:4).
Today's solemnity also has a universal character: It expresses the unity and catholicity of the Church. That's why every year on this date, the new metropolitan archbishops come to Rome to receive the pallium, the symbol of communion with the Successor of Peter. I renew my greeting to these brothers in the episcopate for whom this morning in the basilica I have performed this gesture, and the faithful who accompany them.
I also warmly greet the delegation from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which has come to Rome, like every year, for the celebration of Sts. Peter and Paul. May the common veneration of these martyrs be a pledge for a communion among Christians from every part of the world that is ever more complete and heartfelt. For this, let us invoke the maternal intercession of Mary, the Mother of the one Church of Christ, with the customary recitation of the Angelus.
[After the prayer, the Holy Father continued in Italian:]
The publication of my third encyclical is near. [It] is called "Caritas in Veritate." Taking up again the social themes in "Populorum Progressio," written by the Servant of God Paul VI in 1967, this document -- dated in fact today, June 29, feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul -- aims to go deeper in certain aspects of the integral development of our age, in the light of charity in truth. I entrust to your prayer this new contribution that the Church offers to humanity in its commitment to sustainable progress, in full respect of human dignity and the real needs everyone has.
[Translation by ZENIT]
[Then the Pope greeted the people in various languages. In English, he said:]
I am happy to greet all the English-speaking pilgrims and visitors present for this Angelus, including the new Metropolitan Archbishops who have received the pallium, accompanied by their relatives and friends. I also extend a warm welcome to the Delegation of the Patriarch of Constantinople, present for this joyous celebration. May the Apostles Peter and Paul inspire all Christians, and especially our new Archbishops, to continue to bear clear and generous witnesses to the Gospel. God bless you all!

July 1, 2009

Blessed Junipero Serra
(1713-1784)
In
1776, when the American Revolution was beginning in the east, another
part of the future United States was being born in California. That year
a gray-robed Franciscan founded Mission San Juan Capistrano, now famous
for its annually returning swallows. San Juan was the seventh of nine
missions established under the direction of this indomitable Spaniard.
Born in Spain’s island of Mallorca, Serra entered the Franciscan Order,
taking the name of St. Francis’ childlike companion, Brother Juniper.
Until he was 35, he spent most of his time in the classroom—first as a
student of theology and then as a professor. He also became famous for
his preaching. Suddenly he gave it all up and followed the yearning that
had begun years before when he heard about the missionary work of St.
Francis Solanus in South America. Junipero’s desire was to convert
native peoples in the New World.
Arriving by ship at Vera Cruz, Mexico, he and a companion walked the 250
miles to Mexico City. On the way Junipero’s left leg became infected by
an insect bite and would remain a cross—sometimes life-threatening—for
the rest of his life. For 18 years he worked in central Mexico and in
the Baja Peninsula. He became president of the missions there.
Enter politics: the threat of a Russian invasion south from Alaska.
Charles III of Spain ordered an expedition to beat Russia to the
territory. So the last two conquistadors—one military, one
spiritual—began their quest. José de Galvez persuaded Junipero to set
out with him for present-day Monterey, California. The first mission
founded after the 900-mile journey north was San Diego (1769). That year
a shortage of food almost canceled the expedition. Vowing to stay with
the local people, Junipero and another friar began a novena in
preparation for St. Joseph’s day, March 19, the scheduled day of
departure. On that day, the relief ship arrived.
Other missions followed: Monterey/Carmel (1770); San Antonio and San
Gabriel (1771); San Luís Obispo (1772); San Francisco and San Juan
Capistrano (1776); Santa Clara (1777); San Buenaventura (1782). Twelve
more were founded after Serra’s death.
Junipero made the long trip to Mexico City to settle great differences
with the military commander. He arrived at the point of death. The
outcome was substantially what Junipero sought: the famous “Regulation”
protecting the Indians and the missions. It was the basis for the first
significant legislation in California, a “Bill of Rights” for Native
Americans.
Because the Native Americans were living a nonhuman life from the
Spanish point of view, the friars were made their legal guardians. The
Native Americans were kept at the mission after Baptism lest they be
corrupted in their former haunts—a move that has brought cries of
“injustice” from some moderns.
Junipero’s missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with
unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from
non-Christian native peoples. Through it all his unquenchable zeal was
fed by prayer each night, often from midnight till dawn. He baptized
over 6,000 people and confirmed 5,000. His travels would have circled
the globe. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith
but also a decent standard of living. He won their love, as witnessed
especially by their grief at his death. He is buried at Mission San
Carlo Borromeo, Carmel, and was beatified in 1988.
Comment:
The word that best describes Junipero is zeal. It was a spirit
that came from his deep prayer and dauntless will. “Always forward,
never back” was his motto. His work bore fruit for 50 years after his
death as the rest of the missions were founded in a kind of Christian
communal living by the Indians. When both Mexican and American greed
caused the secularization of the missions, the Chumash people went back
to what they had been—God again writing straight with crooked lines.
Quote:
During his homily at Serra’s beatification, Pope John Paul II said:
“Relying on the divine power of the message he proclaimed, Father Serra
led the native peoples to Christ. He was well aware of their heroic
virtues—as exemplified in the life of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha [July
14]—and he sought to further their authentic human development on the
basis of their new-found faith as persons created and redeemed by God.
He also had to admonish the powerful, in the spirit of our second
reading from James, not to abuse and exploit the poor and the weak.”

THE DIVINE HISTORY AND
LIFE
OF THE
VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD
BOOK FOUR
Describing
the Anxieties of Saint Joseph on Account of the Pregnancy of
Most Holy
Mary, the Birth of Christ our Lord, His Circumcision, the
Adoration
of the Kings, the Presentation of the Infant Jesus
In the
Temple, the Flight into Egypt, the Death of the
Holy
Innocents, and the Return to Nazareth.
THE ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD; THE
CIRCUMCISION.
The signs which the holy angels had indicated to them
did not seem appropriate or proportioned for attesting the greatness of
the Newborn to eyes of the flesh. For to lie in a manger and to be
wrapped in swaddling-clothes, would not have been convincing proof of
the majesty of a king, if these shepherds had not been illumined by
divine light and been enabled to penetrate the mystery. As they were
free from the arrogant wisdom of the world, they were easily made
proficient in the divine wisdom. Conferring among themselves the
thoughts excited by this message, they resolved to hasten in all speed
to Bethlehem and see the wonder made known to them by the Lord. They
departed without delay and entering the cave or portal, they found, as
saint Luke tells us, Mary and Joseph, and the Infant lying in a manger.
Seeing all this they recognized the truth of what they had heard of the
Child. Upon this followed an interior enlightenment consequent upon
seeing the Word made flesh; for when the shepherds looked upon Him. He
also glanced at them, emitting from his countenance a great effulgence,
which wounded with love the sincere heart of each of these poor yet
fortunate men; with divine efficiency it changed them and renewed them,
constituting them in a new state of grace and holiness and filling them
with an exalted knowledge of the divine mysteries of the Incarnation and
the Redemption of the human race.
Prostrating themselves on the earth they adored the
Word made flesh. Not any more as ignorant rustics, but as wise and
prudent men they adored Him, acknowledged and magnified him as true God
and man, as Restorer and Redeemer of the human race. The heavenly Lady
and Mother of the Child took notice of all that they did interiorly and
exteriorly; for She saw into their inmost hearts. In highest wisdom and
prudence She preserved the memory of all these happenings and pondered
them in her soul, (Luke 2, 19), comparing them with the other mysteries
therein contained and with the holy prophecies and sayings of the
Scriptures. As She was then the organ of the holy Spirit and the
representative of the Infant, She spoke to the shepherds,
instructing and exhorting them to persevere in divine love and in the
service of the Most High. They also conversed with Her on their
part and showed by their answers that they understood many of the
mysteries. They remained in the cave from the beginning of dawn until
mid-day, when, having given them something to eat, our great Queen sent
them off full of heavenly grace and consolation.
When for the first time She placed the infant God in
his arms, the most holy Mary said to him: "My husband and my helper,
receive in thy arms the Creator of heaven and earth and enjoy his
amiable and sweet company, in order that my Lord and my God may be
delighted and recompensed by thy faithful services (Prov. 8, 31). Take
to thyself the Treasure of the eternal Father and participate in this
blessing of the human race." And speaking interiorly to the divine
Infant, She said: "Sweetest Love of my soul and Light of my eyes, rest
in the arms of Joseph, my friend and spouse: do thou hold sweet
intercourse with him and pardon me my shortcomings. Much do I feel the
loss of Thee even for one instant, but I wish to communicate without
envy the good I have received, to all that are worthy" (Wis. 7, 13). Her
most faithful husband, acknowledging this new blessing, humbled himself
to the earth and answered: "Lady and Sovereign of the world, my Spouse,
how can I, being so unworthy, presume to hold in my arms God himself, in
whose presence tremble the pillars of heaven? (Job 26, 11). How can this
vile wormlet have courage to accept such an exalted favor? I am but dust
and ashes, but do Thou, Lady, assist me in my lowliness and ask his
Majesty to look upon me with clemency and make me worthy through his
grace."

DIVINE MERCY

Divine Mercy In my soul
The Mercy of the Lord I will sing Forever.
Divine Mercy in my soul.
Sr. Faustina, Diary
Notebook IV
October
10, 1937. O my Jesus, in thanksgiving for Your many graces I offer You my
body and soul, intellect and will, and all the sentiments of my heart.
Through the vows, I have given myself entirely to You; I have then nothing
more that I can offer You. Jesus said to me,
My daughter, you have not offered Me that which is really yours.
I probed deeply into myself and
found that I love God with all the faculties of my soul and, unable to see
what it was that I had not yet given to the Lord, I asked, “Jesus, tell me
what it is, and I will give it to You at once with a generous heart.” Jesus
said to me with kindness,
Daughter, give Me your misery, because it is your exclusive property.
At that moment, a ray of light
illuminated my soul, and I saw the whole abyss of my misery. In that same
moment I nestled close to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus with so much trust
that even if I had the sins of all the damned weighing on my conscience, I
would not have doubted God’s mercy but, wit ha heart crushed to dust, I
would have thrown myself into the abyss of Your Mercy. I believe, O Jesus,
that You would not reject me, but would absolve me through the hand of Your
representative.
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the
ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of life, unfathomable
Divine Mercy, envelope the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
At three o’clock implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for
a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My
abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy for the
whole world. I will allow you to enter into My mortal sorrow. In this hour,
I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My
Passion…
Hail,
most merciful Heart of Jesus,
Living Fountain of all graces,
Our sole shelter, our only refuge;
In You I have the light of hope.
Hail, most compassionate Heart of my God,
Unfathomable living Fount of Love
From which gushes life for sinful man
And the spring of all sweetness.
Hail, open Wound of the most Sacred Heart,
From which the rays of mercy issued forth
And from which it was given us to draw life
With the vessel of trust alone.
Hail, God’s goodness, incomprehensible,
Never to be measured or fathomed,
Full of love and mercy, though always holy,
Yet, like a good mother, ever bent over us.
Hail, throne of Mercy, Lamb of God,
Who gave Your life in sacrifice for me,
Before whom my soul humbles itself daily,
Living in faith profound.

Dr. Paul Jarrett
(continued)
Over the course of the next few days, infection set in which did not
respond to antibiotics, and we made the painful decision to perform a
hysterectomy. Tragically, the shock from the infection severely damaged
her lungs and her course was steadily downhill. As I helplessly watched,
she slipped into unconsciousness and a few days later she died.
I had difficulty putting the whole thing into perspective.
Unfortunately, my conclusion was that there had to be a better way to
perform abortions than to send patients off to a clinic in New York.
There was another kind of abortion being done at that time right in
Coleman Hospital. These were so called "second trimester abortions"
being done for "psychiatric" reasons. Although my textbook stated that
true psychiatric indications for abortion were extremely rare, in
practice it was relatively easy for a woman to get two psychiatrists to
rubber stamp her abortion request for the price of a consultation visit.
By the time all the paperwork was done, these pregnancies were more
advanced and were classified as second trimester. Technically, these
could be between 14 and 27 weeks, but usually they were 18 - 20 weeks
along.
This type of abortion was then done by hypertonic saline injection. In
laymen's terms this meant injecting a very caustic salt solution into
the amniotic sac which the baby swallows, causing his death. Labor
begins 12 - 36 hours later, A well liked member of the teaching faculty
would inject the solution and the patient was admitted to the gynecology
ward to await delivery.
It was my job to go to the ward and pick up the dead baby from the labor
bed and make sure the placenta had all come out. This was my least
favorite duty as a resident, and again I concluded there had to be a
better way.
Since hypertonic saline was so toxic if it was injected into the uterine
wall instead of the amniotic sac; there was a constant search for the
ideal drug. Prostaglandin has now become the drug of choice, but one of
the early experiments was with hypertonic urea. The major disadvantage
in using it, was the problem of live births. I remember using it on a
patient that the psychiatric residents brought to us from their clinic
from an institutionalized patient who really was crazy. I'll never
forget delivering her nearly two pound baby, and hearing her screams,
"My baby's alive, my baby's alive." It lived several days.
Later, I was taught by my chief resident that if I was delivering a
defective baby, such as an anencephalic, I should place it in the bucket
of water at my side and declare it a stillborn. I never did that, but
I'll always remember it.
The problem of live birth in second and third trimester abortions has
been solved by the dilation and evacuation procedure, or D & E. The
cervix is dilated with laminaria, which are pieces of dried seaweed
which absorb water over a 12 hour period and stretch to 4 times their
original size. The baby is then delivered piecemeal.
When I rotated over to the county hospital, I became familiar with
illegal abortions and their aftermath. Every woman who came in with even
a routine miscarriage was suspected of having had a criminal abortion.
We were trained to be suspicious because of the consequences of missing
the diagnosis of a perforated uterus.
We were all indoctrinated with the almost legendary story of how one of
our preceding residents, Dr. James Brillhart, had gone out of the
hospital and tracked down an old, dying abortionist who had been
responsible for the deaths of several patients. Ironically, Dr.
Brillhart has been one of the leading abortionists in Indianapolis from
Roe v. Wade to the present day. The actual number of criminal abortions
was small and although I saw some patients who were pretty sick, I don't
recall any patients during my three years who died from a criminal
abortion.
